Might be a good time to reread it.

Assuming I can keep it up. (I've actually rewritten a few things amongst the current content, too.)

It's interesting, because a lot of writers treat the relationship characters will get into as a substitute for their personalities - which is very offensive if they have believable, likeable character beforehand - and not as a support of that, or just another aspect of it. They forget the reasons why they made these two a couple in the first place; what makes them work, how their romance developed, and focus solely on sustaining that romance for its own sake, on defining them by the roles they have, rather than letting the characters define the roles in their own way. Ironically this is what happens in a lot of relationships in real life as well, so I suppose there is some symmetry to that. But this end justifies the means approach to character relationships, and the way it totally suppresses or outright eradicates a character's personality, makes no sense to would think it'd infuriate the fans to see a character they like so much suddenly lose all individuality and independence. Ah well.

I guess purity goes hand-in-hand with youth, and from a Japanese perspective at least, I can understand where the desire for youth comes from, since it has a real life basis. It's a bit outdated now, admittedly, but I suppose culture and tradition defies modern realities. I don't like the concept personally, but I can't fault them for keeping that purity aspect at the forefront of doubt if they didn't, their characters wouldn't be as popular. Or would be cited as unrealistic. Or whatever else.

There still seems to be a high preference for romantic tragedy, too. Have you ever noticed that pretty much all of the time characters will never just get together? There always has to be some kind of drama involved with their relationship that threatens or outright ends it before they get that happy ending everyone seems to crave after watching their precious favourites suffer as much as is credible for someone in their position, whatever that may be. It's...odd, in my opinion. Repetetive too, because you know exactly how it'll end. I think, just once, I'd like to watch an anime about a well-developed, established couple, who faces and overcomes problems together, and not have that problem be their relationship...or the inequality within that, where the woman is subservient and the man's only problem is trying to figure out how he can defile her without defiling her. That can be just as interesting...more interesting, in fact, because it allows the characters to grow together and make their relationship a meaningful part of their character, not just mindless wish-fulfilment for fans. Honestly, the closest example I can think of of something like that in anime is Kiritsugu and Irisviel in Fate/Zero, which was written by Urobutcher, is mired in drama, ends in tragedy, and keeps the two of them apart for the majority of the show. THAT is how far I have to stretch my thinking for a confirmed couple that are integral to the plot of a show whose relationship is not the problem they're facing. And if Illyasviel didn't exist as a credible motivation for their actions I wouldn't even call that a good example...and using a kid as a reason is the easiest way of capturing that feeling.

Well, why put in more effort than you have to when you know what you've got will be good enough for your audience? Putting in extra effort to give us a well thought-out, meaningful experience is a complete waste of time when a cookie-cutter approach will satisfy the majority...and who gives a muk about what the minority thinks? If they don't like it they don't have to watch it, and they're not the target audience. It's not for them. It's only for the people who like it. Nobody likes to really take on board criticism or try and improve their work; they want the short, easy route. These kinds of mindless approaches to things like relationships in shows are a short and easy route. I get it in some ways, because it's just business. They have to make a living. But it's no wonder the industry is stagnating when nobody can be arsed to really think outside of the box...or, when they do, they get slammed for it. Because it's a very risky business, thinking outside the box. Nobody appreciates non-conformity, unless it's their kind of non-conformity.

...not only that, but fans will make the effort for you. The amount of speculation with practically no basis in the source material is horrific for some of the more popular shows. All the author, or developer, or whatever, has to say is "yeah, you can look at it that way" and bam, you've got instant clarification for a depth they never bothered to write into it. In a way, the fans make the show...and that is why I cannot stand a lot of shows. Interpretation, and the ability to consume and enjoy media in a way you see fit, is a wonderful thing, yes, but it's unbelievably lazy on the part of the creator and it is definitely pandering when the most popular interpretation gets confirmed as canon...or when it spawns additional material that was never intended. Really, all a lot of writers have is an idea and a skeletal framework for a story. The fans write the particulars and make the demand for more...which is always more of the same.

I was going to watch that...somewhen. God knows when. I think I know what you mean with Sawano...sometimes his sound just isn't as...authentic, I suppose would be the word? Like, his work for Gundam series is almost universally terrible, yet the general tone of it is similar to his work on Xenoblade Chronicles X which, quality of the game aside, had a fantastic soundtrack.

Sometimes he just doesn' the theme, maybe. He can't always capture the tone or the atmosphere, so he resorts to a generic noise that is either forgettable or outright detracts from the experience. Motoi Sakuraba has this problem too, although with him it's more that he captures the same feeling each and every time and it doesn't always fit the game in question. Yuki Kajiura too, who falls back on generic vocal tracks when she can't think of anything else instead. He's definitely not alone in it, but his preference for heavier music makes it especially painful at times by comparison to those who do this with an orchestra for the most part...

I was going to watch that, too. I think another reason I watch shows all at once is because, week-by-week, there can be a lot of slow, boring, or outright bad episodes. I'd just drop a show if it had two or three bad episodes in a row. Maybe it'll get better with time. Maybe. I wouldn't hold my breath if I were you.

Fair enough. I'm downloading a lot this season, but I won't watch any of it until it finishes...I never do. I wish Tales of Zestiria the X would finish, because after playing Berseria I really want to watch the anime to see how it compares, but since the last episode doesn't air until the end of the month...ugh.

Sounds...interesting. I say "interesting" because that could either be a hit or a miss...a lot like Sawano's music. When he gets it right, he's right up there with the likes of Yahashi Takahara, and a step below Keiichi Okabe. When he doesn't...god almighty.

I think I get that. I mean, I get irritated with romance in video games when the female character is just an accessory...especially if she had a personality to begin with and it just devolves into that. Yuna in FFX springs to mind as the most obvious one. But it's like the girl in question doesn't make her love interest any better, and makes herself look worse. I suppose it's a culture thing with this idea of proper female behaviour, at least in anime, but it's still bothersome.

Although it's a very interesting thing when it's subverted and played with for other personality types, like in Cross Ange where the central antagonist has an entire harem of girls who are this to him, but HE is this to Ange. Then you have Touga to Utena...or Anthy to Utena, if you really want to take it to extremes. Anthy to Utena is an interesting one in that her personality is filled in afterwards. I think it has something to do with personality and presentation...or its just bad writing. It's like a glaring character flaw that just gets worse and worse as the show progresses, and it's generally distasteful anyway. Love is a partnership, not a complete surrender of personality for one party. When that personality is appealing, watching it trickle away into the same love obsession you've seen millions of times before is disheartening.

Huh. I guess the manga must be pretty popular, for the anime to be so well-liked. I just thought it looked interesting so I started downloading it when it aired, and started watching it last week since it had almost finished.

Thanks. I'm generally iffy with lighter colours unless it's pink, but I'm satisfied with it. As for the show...yeah, it's alright. It's a nice lot of nothing to relax with in the evenings. I can't say how good it is comparatively because I haven't seen many SoL shows; you'd probably know better than I would if you watched it how it measures up. But I'll definitely finish it, unlike a lot of other things I've watched lately. Have you watched anything interesting recently?

    Quick Self-Introduction
I was a VG mod once and now I just play mods and also go to VG. So in a twisted sense, nothing really changed?
Biography, huh? I had something here before, but I scrapped it. And you know, let's forget about that. What's past is past, and who I am now...well, I hope you'll get to know that personally. I don't feel that I can accurately give you a sample of me in a few words and expect you to know me any better. Nah, that's for job interviews and business meetings. For me, anyways. I change fairly often and am not exactly consistent enough to put something here that I would be satisfied with.

Nah, instead let's talk about the future, yeah? I meet and talk to a lot of people who see themselves as hopeless or try to see forward a year or two and see darkness rather than light, and things like this absolutely boggle my mind. After all, what is the future but a playground for possibility?

I suppose that view sounds fairly optimistic, but I wouldn't say it actually is. In fact, I dare say that the beauty of possibility is that it encompasses the best case, the worst case, and every shade in between. An infinite number of shades for an infinite number of possibilities. And what is the future if not the literal culmination of innumerable possibilities? Honestly, I think the thought's pretty exciting! Even taking into account the amount of crap that may include.

With that in mind, let's talk about dreams. Dreams are goals. Dreams are hopes. But most importantly, dreams aren't dreams unless you let them be. Cheesy as that may sound. You, whoever you are, are capable of far more than you think you are. If there's a specific future you seek, it's possible to obtain. Unlike most things, it really is that simple. And this goes the other way, too. Feeling bad for yourself and looking at a grim future will generally create a rather unfortunate self-fulfilling prophecy. So if that's not what you want, don't.

Personally, I love the future for all of its wonderful colors and shades, that it brings excitements and anticipation just as it brings fear and despair. And its vastness is awe-inspiring. Absolutely awe-inspiring.

Anyway. Why am I going on about this? I dunno, this space was empty and at the time of writing, my VMs are disabled. But I suppose I'll just cap this off by saying that if you ever feel like you're stuck between two choices, there most certainly is a third. And a fourth. And a fifth even. The future is as vast as you make it, and if we had a visible roadmap detailing the possible actions we could have taken at any given moment in our lives, I imagine everyone, dead or alive, would feel pretty silly.
