It amazes me to no end how easily some people will try to defend their discrimination with little to no reasoning other than it's "interference" with current ways of thinking and acting. I'm glad that some action is being taken, but really—why was this portion of the Voting Rights Act removed in the first place?

This is going to be very important the next few election cycles. Texas, with is growing Hispanic population, is increasingly becoming blue, to the point that the state could become Democratic in the next few election cycles. The GOP will never be able to win a federal election again if California, New York, and Texas are all blue. This is basically an attempt to circumvent that change by arranging the districts in such a way to keep the state red for as long as possible.

Good work, Justice Department. Now, get to work on fixing that gerrymandering which gave Republicans a majority in the House in 2010 even though more votes for Democrats were cast.

But oh what a mess voting rights are in at the moment in America. It's like we haven't learned anything in the last half a century.
