Microsoft Longhorn - Office
Hey guys,
Heres some real Webmaster discussion information for you. First off the new windows will be called Windows Longhorn - its going to be all voice activated. I just (about 1 hour ago) got the new Microsoft office 2003 and its all voice activated as well, you wouldn't believe how good it is. I can't wait for full voice activation :). So what do you guys think? What do you think the new Windows Longhorn will look like? Ideas peoples :) |
welll you can get longhorn alpha build somewhere so you can see what it looks like
|
hmm... do you have a link Fudge?
|
yeah you can get the SDK. I'm going to ask my boyfriend where you can get it, because hes involved with all that kind of stuff. But this voice speech is awsome.. its so accurate.
|
well i dont really have a link but someone did post one on mirc once
|
How is this a Webby topic and not just a general computer one? It isn’t about servers or anything. @[email protected]
|
Sorry Kairi, i'm not sure where the general Computer forum is. Feel free to move it.
|
actually my uncle works in microsoft asia...
he told me longhorn is pretty cool the only problem is that the icons are large! and so far the OS is still testing... btw i also ask him to try to get a copy of it for me... hopefully i can get LONGHORN! |
yeah, that would be cool. I think it will be really buggy with the new voice commands.. and i wont' bother buying it for like another 2-3 years untill all the secuirty issues are fixed and sort for.
|
Well I'd recommend heading over to Winbeta.org.
They have news on all this stuff, and those of us in the loop have been using it for about 12 months now. It's good, but not great. WinFS is a total DOG to run, and the OS is basically like a really slugish version of XP. Of course, given it's not even BETA yet, thats to be expected. |
Ahh ok?... So your using Windows Longhorn Beta right?.. Well thnx for the site info, its great to browse through ^^"

That's funny. Anyway, here's how I think of anything Windows: Boo Windows and Microsoft! Yeah for Linux! Also, it'll take a long time untill voice command is fully functional. But I must agree, it looks cool :D You can get a beta of Longhorn on Kaazaa for all you dark people. |

Voice commands, by nature, are not perfect. In fact, if you have Windows with voice recognition, you will notice that you need to "accustom" the computer with your use of speech. Everyone talks differently, so you must practise with the voice recognition. If you are willing to spend the time, then by no means is voice recognition "buggy." Perhaps, it may be so in beta stages of development; but in normal scenarios, it shouldn't be. "Longhorn" is a developers’ codename, akin to Nintendo calling the GameCube "Dolphin" during development. I'm sure Microsoft will use a different title when their product is on the market. Here's a link to a search on Microsoft's site: >>>. There, you will find links, such as "Downloads Related to Longhorn" and "What is Longhorn?". |
Saw it... it took up a LOT of resources...
And someone I knew had it installed... he said it was awesome... gave me a link to it but I never got around to installing it myself... *-* |
Longhorn is just another In House name like Chicago or Whistler :P
I don't think it'll have voice usage as a featue it relies on, just one that's there. I'm currently waiting for the new render system to show up in the alpha builds. Nothing yet though |
How is this a webby discussion topic? neway, My school gave me the longhorn alpha build, it's reaaaalllly buggy
|
Your school gave it to you? I wouldn’t think they’d distribute Longhorn alphas, but oh well. o.o; *moved*
|
Yeah, I'd hope schools aren't distributing software protected by Microsofts strict interlecutal property laws.
Which build, btw? As of late, it's not been so buggy for me as it has been slow. |
Maybe I didn’t catch this—you running it on a spate machine, and if so what specs/any hardware issues?
|
I'm running it on my old Athlon 2500 box.
It's pitifully underpowered; as it only has 512MB of RAM and the CPU running at stock. Longhorn has proven interesting thus far, but as yet turning on WinFS is NOT an option (I think in the last build I got they disabled it completely anyway). I may install it on this machine when it goes RC1 or RC2, but until then it gets to reside on faithful Armitage over in the corner. |
Morrisville State University (my college) and MS have some kind of academic alliance. We get all their software related to courses we're taking. So we get the advance releases of MS Suits before the hit the website. We've been running Office '03 (+ extensions) for months.
|
2003 has been out for a pretty long time, but getting it free is still nice I guess. ^_^; Hardly much in there for the average user, even if Outlook is a bit pretty. O.o; At least it’s more stable than my… *ahem* copy of 2K office.
|
I have only Publisher 2003. The eyecandy looks very nice... ^_^....
lol.... |
Oh, groovy, Kwesi.
I wasn't sure weather or not Longhorn had been released under the MSDN Partners License. But if you're happily messing around with it, thats awesome :D What're your thoughts? Think WinFS is going to be one of those 'Nice Features That Gets Dropped'? |
…I think it’s really stupid they’re taking so long and dropping all that even made it worth it, really >.>
|
Well one has to remember that it's not even in beta stages yet. Once it reaches RC1 we'll have a rough idea of what the final resembles. Though having said that, XP changed quite a bit between RC1 and RTM. So I guess we'll wait and see.
|
I…probably had no idea what Windows even meant back when XP was in beta. *shrug* I’ve only tried to become tech savvy in the last year or so, so I don’t remember stuff like Netscape etc etc. o.o
|
*twitch* You're not missing much by not remembering Netscape :D
Basically the way a Windows developement works is Pre-Alpha: The devs will usually take the previous OS and play around with some ideas they want to implement, using the previous OS as a launching pad. Alpha: They now have the first build of the new core in place, and start actually trying to make the ideas WORK. Pre-Beta: They've got alot of the ideas they want working, and for the most part the core is stabilising. Still not really suitable for putting on your main PC though. Not for a longtime yet. Beta RC1: Release Candidate 1.This is when we first get a rough idea of the OS. New Core, most features are working to some degree and Microsoft now want people to let them know how things are working, what doesn't work, what just sucks. Alot will change between this and RC2, and alot between RC2 and RTM. But this is the first rough insight into the new OS. Beta RC2: It's at this stage that alot of the features get dropped. After this it usually goes RTM (Final), so this is a big step. Microsoft put out this build with the core 90% stable, and all features they intend to put into the RTM. Some features may yet be dropped if they prove problematic, or impractical. RTM: Release to Manafactuer. This is the final version. Things might still have been dropped from RC2, but most importantly, the core will work, the features will work, and the new OS is ready to thrust out unto the world. Of course, once it hits shelves the update process begins, because no matter how extensive a beta period may be, there'll always be uncaught bugs. Right now, Longhorn is at the end of its Pre Alpha stage, moving into Alpha. |
Yeah, I don't think i would even install Longhorn until it was a full release. Because all the betas etc... are so buggy and i wouldn't even know how to install two operating systems.
|
Some people like the bleeding glitchy edge I guess. o.o;;
a1337a, how long has Windows development gone through those stages? IE 3.1, 95, always…? Thanks for the information too. ^^ |
Since NT 3.x, and then Windows 95.
Though it's only more recently that you're able to get straight into IRC and pick up just about ANY build so far of an In-Dev OS. |
