Daddy Long Legs, or Pholcidae, is actually harmless to us because it's jaws can't penetrate our skin. However, it's Venom is highly neurotoxic, which is to say that it attacks the central nervous system causing intense pain, profuse sweating, difficulty in breathing, loss of consciousness, violent convulsions and, finally.. death.

We're just lucky that even if it COULD bite us, its dose is so tiny it would cause nothing more than a little discomfort.

Chairman Kaga June 7th, 2004 5:00 PM

Wow...Daddy Long Legs have a neurotoxin? That's something they don't teach you in school <_<;; I'm just glad there aren't any like it that are bigger than that...I'm actually pretty lucky that I live in a part of America that really has no poisonous spiders...we sure do have lots of mosquitos though... *scratches arms*

aaaaaa June 7th, 2004 5:03 PM

Oh there are Neurotoxic Spiders that CAN kill you.
The Black Widow, for one.
But you dont exactly find those creeping around your house :P

We have two uber deadly spiders found in abundence in my city; The White Tail (venom will make your flesh rot and drop off your bones) and the Red Back.
Then up in Sydney they have the Funnel Web too.
Man, my country rocks :P

I remember one time when they reported there were Brown Recluse spiders here, I didn’t sleep the entire night panning the room for them, gah. I’m so terrified of spiders, black window being by far the worst. I can’t…even think about it, gah. >.<

Chairman Kaga June 7th, 2004 5:14 PM

Just the thought of black widows scares me half out of my mind...I'm not a fan of spiders (except the aforementioned Daddy Long Legs...I'll let those crawl around me without killing them...) Worst one I've ever seen is a neon orange one...I guessed that, as in other animals, brightly-colored = poisonous so I called my dad to capture it...he drowned it in isopropyl alcohol instead of squishing it so he could keep it for reference...I wonder if he still has it o_O

I suppose the advantage of living where I do with so many things that can kill you is that you develop a level of calm and respect for them.
You just get used to sharing an enviroment with 'em, and they dont tend to bother you anymore.
And if they dont bother you, they're less likely to bite you.

Chairman Kaga June 7th, 2004 5:24 PM

The spiders around here, although not deadly, will bite you in your sleep...they don't need to be provoked, they're just mean-spirited or something :P When I'm asleep is when I'd be worried about being bitten...but then again, I'm sure the hospitals around there are probably well-equipped with all sorts of antivenom. I think all I have to worry about here is if a copperhead came up out of the creek, slithered 5 miles to my house, got in my bed, and attacked me for no reason...I suppose we're more terrified of animals around here because we're not used to seeing them or being around them...and I'm just plain paranoid, I've watched too many shows on the discovery channel about venomous insects and reptiles for my own good...

It's strange like that.
You watch documentaries to get educated, and to alleviate your fears.
But they just make them worse, cause you now know EXACTLY what said creature can do

Bhati June 7th, 2004 5:56 PM

I watch all those documetries, but none of them really scare me that much. I don't fear aniamals all that much, and go up to random animals and try to pet them. Not sure where I got that from though, my mom is afraid of almost every animal, and my dad dosn't fear animals, but dosn't like them either. Heh, another thing that makes me differant from my family.

Chairman Kaga June 7th, 2004 6:02 PM

I follow the rule of if it isn't a bunny or cat, I don't pet it. Most things around here can bite your hand off...I for one actually have a phobia of dogs and other large animals...

^^NICK^^ v.3.0 June 7th, 2004 6:12 PM

My sister is scared of most domestic pets, I don't understand why since she has such a smart mouth. When we first got our kittens, she was scared to touch them, even though they were only 3 weeks old.

Back to the spiders. I don't care if they ar epoisonous, non-poisonous, happy, sad, brown or orange, if they touch me, I'm going off. I will call 911 *calls 911*, told you! I despise spiders, they are so ugly, and hairy and EWW! Ugh, do you believe I don't hate spiders now?

Yeah but doesn't it give you rabies or smething. :P

I don't. I wouldn't go up to a huge wild wolf, obviousally, but dogs, cats, horses, cows, pretty much anything that isn't capible of causing major damage. Well I guess cows, horses, and dogs could inflict some damage, but most of them are domisticated, so I don't worry to much.

^^NICK^^ v.3.0 June 7th, 2004 6:30 PM

I have no cockroaches where I live now. The suburbs are cockroach free ^_^, but actually my neighbor has cockroaches, and a lot. I don't know how they do, because I'm sure nobody else on my block does. I have spiders/ bees/ sometimes ants.

I'm gonna stay up utnil probably 1 am. I'm gonna say goodbye to you guys at 12, or 12: 30, because I have to watch Case Closed on Cartoon Network. I feel fresh since I took that aspririn, and now I'm ready to party hardy Marty... ~_~

I'm going off to my room at about this time. Goodnight and have sweet dreams. I'll see you tomorrow at about 6: 30 I think. Bye Bye Bye
