A 3rd Gen Poliwrath in need

I was planing on using Poliwrath as a physical Tank on my team, which mean belly drum is probably a bad idea. It is good defensively, so I thought bulk up, hypnosis, Brick Break, and HP Physical would work since I don't have the EQ TM. Any ideas?

Since this is 3rd Gen I believe Hydro Pump + Mind Reader is in order.

Poliwrath
128 HP, 56 Attack, 128/56 Defense, 128/56 Sp. Defense. (choose one for 128, the other 56)
Nature: Relaxed/Sassy
Ability: Damp
- Mind Reader/Body Slam/HP Ground/Bug.
- Hydro Pump
- Hypnosis
- Brick Break

Jordan.

I have one question. Poliwrath has bad special attack, so why arm it with hydro pump? Would this work?:

[email protected]
Adamant Nature
EVs: 252 HP, 132 Special Defense, 63 Attack, 63 Defense
~Bulk Up
~HP Bug
~Hypnosis
~Brick Break

Is that good, or bad? I need this thing to be able to take some hits, so does it work? Can this be a counter against any real threat in the OU metagame (3rd gen)??? Thanks Jordan.

If you're going with a set that includes Bulk Up, then use this:

Poliwrath @ Leftovers
Adamant Nature
EVs: 138 HP/252 Atk/118 Spd
- Substitute
- Brick Break
- Bulk Up
- Ice Punch / Waterfall

If you don't care about speed in this case, split the EVs into defence and sp.def.

Why Ice punch/waterfall? Those are special moves. Besides that, the only thing I'm confused about is all the attack EVs. Bulk up helps a lot and I need poliwrath to take a hit. Also, if he has sub, why not make him a subpuncher? Just curious.

On my UU team I use this:

Poliwrath (M) @ Leftovers ** Rocky Balboa
Trait: Water Absorb
EVs: 252 HP / 132 Atk / 84 Def / 40 SDef
Adamant Nature (+Atk, -SAtk)
- Brick Break
- Bulk Up
- Hidden Power [Rock/Ghost]
- Rest

Yea. By the way the UU team was given to me by a good UUer because I do UU so it's a good set.

Anti August 16th, 2007 8:11 PM

Okay, is there any substitute for hidden power? Or am I gonna have to use it? Can I have a few more special D. EVs since bulk up raises the physicals so much, or keep it as-is?

Mullet August 16th, 2007 8:15 PM

Well if you can't get a good type and good power HP then I'd suggest Sleep Talk or Substitute over HP. I prefer Stalk personally.

Anti August 16th, 2007 8:22 PM

Is water absorb A good ability? Anyways:

[email protected]
Adamant Nature
EVs: 252 HP, 50 Attack, 50 Defense, 158 Special Defense
~Bulk Up
~Rest
~Sleep Talk/HP Physical if I can get it
~Brick Break

That good?

Mullet August 16th, 2007 8:33 PM

Only use HP if you can get HP [Rock/Ghost] with 70 power.

No that is not good. You will not always get to set up with Bulk Up and and want to do good damage after one Bulk Up so you need the attack EVs. Leave the EVs the way they are. All that Special Defense on him is pointless.

Anti August 16th, 2007 8:37 PM

EVs: 252 HP / 132 Atk / 84 Def / 40 SDef

So use that? If he can take quite a few hits, I'm good. So, those EVs and everything else I had earlier?
