More Tiles from Me

NOTE! If you are a game developer or a ROM hacker looking for sprites, read the license in the link below before you use. If you agree, feel free to use my sprites. Otherwise, just back off.

Well, guys, I figured it's time I redo my first post to include as much of my work as I can find. Some stuff will be new to you, but everything else will be old. I have too much work to display everything at once, so each individual section is hidden in spoiler tags.

Anyway, a little background on why I started doing pixel art. Feel free to skip over it, i just feel like posting this.

When I first laid eyes on Kyledove's tiles (I can't remember exactly when, but it was before 2006), I was envious of his skills. I was also a little disappointed they were out of reach at the time. I also came across a certain Remy with the Pokémon Treasures project. Once again, his tiles were out of reach. Well, at the time that I was making my first fangame that I debuted to the community, I thought of trying to make my own tiles, but didn't think I could do it, so I used FR/LG and R/S/E ones. Then, in mid-2006, I came up with the idea of my Pokémon Wulfenite hack. It was essentially a rescripted and remapped version of Ruby. With the popularity of Pokémon Naranja and its amazing graphics, I decided I was going to insert some of my own tiles. At the time, the only tutorial I could find was the one on WAH, which was completely in Spanish. So, I modified some RPG Maker 2003 tiles and got to work on deciphering the tutorial and inserting them (the hard way). The idea died, because I lost interest in the hack. My next project was another hack, this one was called Pokémon EmberOrange. At first, it was a joint project between Christos (Cirno, now) and I. I made custom graphics and did some mapping, and Christos did some mapping. That's really all we got to do before the hack died. After EmberOrange, I decided I was going to try some bigger forms of pixel art, and a new tileset. That's where the Shuckle art came from. That's also where the unfinished Chao and the 1-Up Shroom came from. After that, I thought about doing EmberOrange again. This time, I was going solo on it. New tiles again, and this time, I was going to resprite all the Pokémon that were going to be included. All I got done was Bellsprout. Inbetween EmberOrange and my next hack, I made a new set of tiles. My next hack was Pokémon Harmony. This hack actually started out as a ROM base I made for PHO. Of course, new tiles and what-not. Well, that hack lasted only for so long. Then I decided to do the Dragon Quest-inspired tileset for a project I was planning called Let It Rain, as well as the tileset that came before that one. Once again, I only got so far on both of them. My biggest project came next, which would be the PHO tileset that spanned one year. At first, it was just a small collection of tiles for the PHO website. Well, I continued this style for a while and it became my biggest tileset ever. After looking at it one day, I decided I didn't really like the style anymore. At that point, I switched to the brighter style. I also started doing tiles for Pokémon Acanthite at that point. This tileset was the first tileset that I would do inddor tiles for. Well, for some odd reason, I decided I would see how they look if they were 32x32 tiles, and not scaled. That led me to create the 32x32 set. That set was also going to be used for an original idea, but it never came through. Well, after giving it some thought, I decided I would ask Kyledove if I could use his newest Johto style. That leads me to the style I have been using. Well, was using. I am not doing tiles anymore, but I am doing bigger pixel projects. Things like the new Shuckle I did.

Anyway, here is my work, divided into sections. I do not claim any rights to anything that I have modified. Like I said, a lot of it is really old.

Well, that's most of it. There are some pieces that I purposely left out, and others I just couldn't find.

Monkey In Rehab September 1st, 2007 6:50 AM

My favourite is tileset 3! Keep up the good work!

Tangerine Fox September 1st, 2007 7:42 AM

Very, very impressive! You really seem to have put a lot of detail and effort into your work. I'm especially taken by all your trees -- so much texture on such a little space! Your maps are very nice, as well. I can't imagine making many maps because of all the copying and pasting, but you've made things that would look right at home in a game.

I'm nowhere near your skill level, so I'm having trouble finding anything I don't like. Keep up the amazing work! Bravo!

Samson September 1st, 2007 8:13 AM

wow, very well done. the only thing i can suggest for your newest tilesets is that you give the objects darker outlining. there's an issue with how light they are because they are so well done.

other than that, i love the November tileset.

NoOb GaMeMaKeR September 1st, 2007 8:58 AM

THOSE ARE AWESOME TILES this is my first post from being back from being banned and also would you mind if i use those tilesets and gave credit

brendan mc September 1st, 2007 9:02 AM

wow freak'in awsome man, amazing work you done there.

jubb September 3rd, 2007 2:37 PM

is your name alt codes? nice stuff too

Thanks for all the comments. I just remade the crane from D/P.

http://img265.imageshack.us/img265/1050/cranehu3.png

PLEASE NOTE! No one may use this sprite. I made it exclusively for a fan game.

Webus September 4th, 2007 3:39 PM

Really good, you can make an animation of it, it will be cool *-*

Your other tiles, they are cool too an i love Set #2

DarkGreg September 5th, 2007 8:25 AM

All tilesets are pretty good. Keep up the good work.

venom12 September 6th, 2007 3:16 AM

That's Great. It's beauty. Keep up the good work. Make great's tiles

Alistair September 6th, 2007 5:53 PM

@Webus: I would like to do that, but getting that sprite alone to look right took about an hour and a half; time that should have been spent doing homework. If I had more time, I would attempt it.

Anyway, small little update to Tileset 1. Check the first post. I made a new tree and a cut tree.

J.M. September 8th, 2007 7:25 AM

Amazing, absolutely amazing!

Everything is spot on, with great detail on lots of them. Things like the Poke Marts/Centers look exactly like they are in the real game

My favourite would be the 3rd one

Alistair September 8th, 2007 12:39 PM

Thanks for the comment.

Anyway, I just finished that map I was working on. Check the first post.

Meh September 12th, 2007 11:57 AM

They look absolutely brilliant. I've been looking for good tiles for ages! Keep up the good work!

Ketiou September 12th, 2007 12:43 PM

Complete and absolutely beautiful and BRILLIANT!!!
^.^
I love it. I wish I could make titles that good. :)

Alistair September 26th, 2007 5:25 PM

Thanks for the comments. I know it has been a long time since I updated, but I started on a new set. Here it is:

http://img297.imageshack.us/img297/4094/newtilesetqd5.png

No one is allowed to use any tiles from this set, as I made these tiles specifically for my hack, Pokémon Harmony.

cooley October 3rd, 2007 1:41 PM

Hey Дон Пач, I really love your tiles, why don't I claim them as my own(JUST KIDDING)
I suggest that you can make a rombase for each one of them, I'll

Help you with that too, if you like.
Keep up the great work,
~cooley~

Anastasia.R October 5th, 2007 2:35 PM

Very nice work you have. I go with darker outlines, but you make bright outlines looks so...good in a way... Nice I love your work. ^^

oh wow those look awesome.

only suggestion i have is on the grass tiles. they could probably use less intensity. they stand out too much that i think seeing a character's overworld walking over them would look awkward. i would just try to soften the pixels in the grass.

Alistair October 17th, 2007 11:02 AM

Thanks for the comments, Samson. About the grass, I know it is quite busy, but it fits the style of mapping it was made for. That is why it is not toned down.

Anyway, here is the updated Harmony tileset and some revamps I did in my free time.

faturtwig, axibar: keep your comments constructive as outlined in the pixel art rules. Another occurrence of such posts in the future will result in further action being taken.

Alistair December 2nd, 2007 8:53 AM

Wow. I haven't been here for over a month (Luckily, the thread is 2 days within the expiry period).

Anyway, here is the Harmony Tileset so far. I will also post some maps later, and I am also in the process of reorganizing all my tiles (Onto one big sheet).

I also made a new avatar, as you could probably see.

|Maximus| December 2nd, 2007 9:47 AM

Nice tiles , Don, there aren't too many flaws. Nice overshading. The stone building kind of looks like R/S/E style.

Alistair December 4th, 2007 3:40 AM

Thanks for the comment.

I updated the first post, so you might want to check that out.

GSanky December 7th, 2007 8:32 AM

Omg they rule (:

I like the g/s/c revamp. Try make an rby revamp, too. I'm sure it would look good.

EDIT: Kay, critism:
Some tree tiles have an ligther grass on them, some have darker. I dont think they would fit together on one map.
The GSC mountin is a little undershaded. That, or there is little contrast.
Othervise, it's very good and ther rule.
Oh, and one major flav on the houses: the outline. Try making the outline ligther on left side and darker on right side, so it looks like light source comes from there.

kokyuio December 7th, 2007 8:40 AM

hey those tiles are awesome epically the tree house one

The 1st tileset is really good. I don't like the 2nd.
The Harmony tiles are the best, but nobody (expect you) can't use them :( .
Maybe just this one Palm Tree ?

Alistair December 12th, 2007 3:38 PM

Sorry, but nope (but that might very well change, thanks to the problems with Harmony right now).

Anyway, soon I will reveal a tileset that I made specifically for a special website (Not saying who), along with a few maps.

mackoo December 13th, 2007 5:36 AM

Ok, I know you want some tiles just for you. Hope, that this new tileset will has a Palm Tree^^.
But I can use this tileset: http://img153.imageshack.us/img153/2416/mycompletetilesetvd4.png ? (for sure credits).

Hackrex December 14th, 2007 3:00 AM

hi DON, this tiles are very good.
But how do you's that you so good Fareben for developing these? Just try, and then you liked?

Mike2494 December 14th, 2007 10:24 AM

I guess u worked hard to make these. They r really great
Good job

doesn't matter December 14th, 2007 12:45 PM

Hackrex and Mike2494, your comments are not meeting posting requirements of the pixel art section. It'd be best if you both review the local rules before posting here again.

Alistair December 31st, 2007 9:04 AM

Okay, I have a huge update. Check the first post for new maps and a new tileset, as well as some pixel art you have not seen before.

Twinx December 31st, 2007 9:14 AM

Wow nice work man... I just adore your trees :P I'm not sure about the the one with the flower on top though. It's a neat idea, but it doesn't feel right.

One map caught my eye:
http://img182.imageshack.us/img182/2930/furankimapsu4.png
-The trees look cool, but a bit too long.
-The pond could use a border. I like the signpost though, old and broken :D I bet it says no swimming hehe
-The house... no need to comment...

Keep it up!

Alistair December 31st, 2007 10:19 AM

If I forgot to mention it, I will mention it now: Those tiles were made for one of Cartman's South Park hacks, so they are supposed to be very simple, seeing as South Park is made out of construction paper. I tried to capture that feeling, but ultimately failed, as you can see.

Twinx December 31st, 2007 10:27 AM

Oops.. my mistake.. Ya I've seen South Park and I see what your vision was and I guess it's ok for what it is. My apologies.

Alistair January 1st, 2008 5:51 AM

A bit of another update: I added the tileset I made so far for DarkPegasus. Check out the first post.

Mike2494 January 3rd, 2008 3:44 AM

These tiles are wonderful, you should make a rom base out of them.

Alistair January 5th, 2008 7:31 PM

Thanks for the comment. I have though about it, but since I really do not support the idea of ROM Bases, I did not, and will not, make any.

Anyway, I have an update. Here is the revised PHO Tileset.

http://img299.imageshack.us/img299/2015/photilesetar0.png
Credit me and PHO if used

axlefoley January 5th, 2008 11:42 PM

As per usual great tiles Don. It would be nice to see some new interiors and caves though.

Samson January 6th, 2008 12:47 AM

wowza. i completely love the house under the gym set. also really loving the triangular building at the bottom of the sheet. it has that beach house/auditorium look to it.

your tree tiles are flawless too. you should make a map using that palm tree and that beach house. sure, city on the beach is an old'd, but those houses are just too gorgeous to not see a themed map.

the only thing i can leave a critique on is the wooden brick houses and gym tiles in the PHO tileset. the concept is clear that the roofs of the buildings are exposed to lighting that separates the north and south side of them. the problem is the lighting is a little too soft for the north side of the roofs for those buildings. maybe it's just the pattern on the roofs of those buildings that makes it look less like the north and south side of the roof, or maybe it's just me... XD

do you see what i mean tho?

Alistair January 6th, 2008 6:25 AM

Yeah, I noticed it. I have really been meaning to contrast it a mit more, but I have been mainly concentrated on making new tiles.

And axlefoley, I have tried making interiors before (Even though it was a while ago) and they were terrible. About th caves thing, I already have 3 mountain sets and plenty of rocks done in the same style (Though I should make a crater and stalactite and stalagmite).

Darklink727 January 6th, 2008 6:33 AM

These tiles are great if i use them i will be sure to credit you.

Alistair January 13th, 2008 11:44 AM

Thanks for the comments.

Anyway, I have some new maps for you, and an update to the PHO Tileset.

Do you got them already inserted in a tileset to please..I would really appreciate it..:)
and the palettes to if I may use them (I want to use them in my not posted hack)

Alistair January 14th, 2008 3:33 PM

Sorry, but I do not have them inserted (yet, *hint* *hint*). And I don't care if you use my palettes, just please credit me for them.

Anyway, I have a new map. I call this one Pineside.

http://img524.imageshack.us/img524/3486/pinesidemountain2aq9.png

Samson January 14th, 2008 7:52 PM

wow, absolutely beautiful. i love how you inserted grass/bush tiles in between the tree tiles. a lot more aesthetically appealing than the standard continuous tree tile set up.

only thing i can comment on is the flat mountain range tiles. the pattern for the mountain walkways have a volcanic look to it rather a mountain. maybe you should simplify the pattern so that it looks less like a repeating crater kind of thing... if you know what i mean.

+Sneasel™ January 15th, 2008 3:36 PM

YOU ROCK!!!
enough said :)
I love those trees! I may use some for my hack (of coarse with credit given to you)

Just tell me which tiles you want, if you want me to reinsert them. I also have many more, just check here, in my thread, and tell me which ones you want.

Could you insert all of them in?
Would you like me to send you a patch of my rom or something?
I've tried to insert tiles once, even using a tutorial, bit it ruined my hack..lol...
Would you like to be a GYM LEADER in my hack, it's a way of crediting people who help my hack better =D

Alistair January 19th, 2008 3:50 PM

Hey all! I took a little break from inserting tiles for Kebbles and I made a map. This is route 563.

/Circa January 19th, 2008 4:17 PM

I like the map, but as before, the ledges are a little too dark, you don't need to change the palette, but just make them lighter perhaps?

Also, On the edges of the water ponds, shouldn't there be a sought of shadow? Like a darkish blue colour? It makes it look a little better, though i'll leave it up to you!

Good job though, as always.

Samson January 19th, 2008 7:25 PM

i agree on the darkness of the ledges, but the pond does have shadowing on its edges. it's not as visible as GBA style, but it's just right. everything else is flawless.

Alistair January 20th, 2008 8:44 AM

Okay, I touched up on the ledges. Here they are:

http://img172.imageshack.us/img172/7326/route561hd9.png

I also made a mock-up of the mixing system that is going to be in my fangame. I know it is boring, so I am labeling it as a WIP.

Ooooo Route Is pretty!
Do you mind If I use some?
With credit of course!
I simply love your tiles,
You are simply a master!

Alistair January 22nd, 2008 7:38 PM

Of course you may use my tiles, just as long as you also credit PHO if you use that set.

Speaking of the PHO Tileset, I have an update. I added some new trees to it.

http://img156.imageshack.us/img156/1545/photilesetch1.png

Samson January 22nd, 2008 8:40 PM

nice. i love the smaller tree. it's perfect.

Satoshi Sugimori January 23rd, 2008 5:55 AM

Looking good Don:D
Keep up the good work..:)
The small tree really is perfect..
The big tree is to triangly to wide at the bottom I think bt still great..:P

Alistair January 23rd, 2008 6:38 PM

Thanks for the comments. I wouldn't really call the small tree perfect per sé, but you can if you really think that way.

Anyway, here is a new map, called Route 560.

Lupe January 25th, 2008 2:32 AM

hey don patch can you make a dp lab in fr style???

Alistair January 29th, 2008 3:29 AM

Sorry, but no. I am currently only working on the PHO tileset.

Anyway, I got some new tiles. A dome building and a pier tile. I also have a map, called Willow Village.

Route 561

Samson January 29th, 2008 9:38 AM

that dome building is beautifully designed, but it just needs a few technical fixes. the outlining is quite distorted. you should use some anti-aliasing techniques to soften the edges.

other than that, brilliant work you've got here. love the wooden brick harbor.

Atomic Reactor January 29th, 2008 3:57 PM

im loving route 561.
and everything else youve done!
keep up the great work buddy!

Alistair January 29th, 2008 6:55 PM

Thanks for the comments. About the dome building, I'll see what I can do about it. I know it has problems, mainly because of the 15-color limit in Pokémon ROMs (Luckily, I have one color left).

Anyway, I have updated the tileset, with the ocean tiles and animations. I also have a new map, PalmBreeze Beach. This is not the final version, as I plan to make a hotel for this map and make the map itself bigger because of it.

PHO Tileset

Samson January 30th, 2008 6:03 PM

yay! a beach. looks great ^.^ the pool of water at the bottom left is a little random considering it has a current.

oh and i don't think you need to modify the palette of the dome building much at all. perhaps the darker shade of gray used on the roof and support poles could be a bit darker so that they stand out just a little more and give you more freedom to rework the shape of the black outlines.

TheKingofKings February 2nd, 2008 6:02 PM

Your such a Legend Don, your tiles are amazing. The beach looks real, and you have drifted far away from Fire Red, and made it much more better.

I love the Dome House. Can't wait for more!

Epsilon February 3rd, 2008 6:18 AM

Your tiles look amazing!
But just a question, are all of these actually imported in to a game?
And if it is in which game?

Alistair February 3rd, 2008 7:36 AM

Thanks for the comments. As soon as I am done spriting for Atomic Reactor, I will make a new building for the PHO set, along with a new path, and maybe another Mart/Center set.

DarkPegasus February 8th, 2008 1:02 PM

"And there he stood in his amazement" - DP (like a sec ago)

Uber! I really like the sea tileset, I'd really like to see it animated, can you make that happen? : )

Edit (seeing that I got a warning O_o): I can't really see anything wrong with the tilesets, except, maybe, that you inverted the roof shading (in Pokemon games the further part is darker), but I contribute that to your style.

Alistair February 12th, 2008 7:16 PM

Well, I'll sea if I can get an image animator (Pun intended).

Anyway, I have some new things. I have the new building to the PHO tileset, and I also have the helicopter done for AR (by the way, do not use the helicopter).

Samson February 12th, 2008 11:23 PM

oh wow, that new building is brilliant. very well done. looks like a jail. what exactly is it?

i love the helicopter there. i only have one issue with it, that being that it could use some darker outlining. for instance, the building above it has the perfect balance of dark and anti-aliasing outlining. besides that, it's flawless. can't wait to see more.

Alistair February 13th, 2008 12:36 PM

Well, it is supposed to be a city building. I am working on other urban tiles at the moment, as well as some tiles for some fangames.

Atomic Reactor February 13th, 2008 2:08 PM

yay! the helicopter is done =D
it came alot sooner than expected =)
it looks great.

big time pokefan February 13th, 2008 3:33 PM

i like your tiles whole alot

Alistair February 13th, 2008 7:47 PM

Okay, I finished the tiles I made for DarkPegasus. Here they are.

http://img352.imageshack.us/img352/2929/completeddptilesim6.png
Please do not use.

So now, the next project to tackle are the other tiles that AR requested. I will do those as soon as possible.

Mike2494 February 14th, 2008 2:44 AM

Those look great!
Even though, you could maybe change the pallet of those trees a bit, a bit darker maybe, if they would be like that ground, it would be perfect.

Atomic Reactor February 15th, 2008 11:18 AM

those trees are really good. but one of the stumps confuses me.
the far left
are those mushrooms or something?
cuz to me they look like pokeballs, id change the colors of them

is that enough constructive criticism?

DarkPegasus February 21st, 2008 1:58 PM

Here's a little tribute for Пач

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v520/DarkPegasus/PatchCine1.png

Thank you for all the sprites you made for me. You've been more than a team member and inspiration. I hope that we'll keep on working together ^^

Alistair February 21st, 2008 5:52 PM

Wow, that looks excellent. I was expecting you to only use one of the trees, but I see you used almost all of them. By the way, if you also need some pond tiles, I could make those in addition to the Snow tiles.

Anyway, I have been really busy. I just finished the line art for the cathedral for AR. I haven't touched on the snowy tiles just yet, but I should be able to get to them this weekend. Here are some trees I made a couple of days ago for DarkPegasus (though I forgot to give them to him), too.

Atomic Reactor February 24th, 2008 4:22 PM

i really cant think of any criticism for the cathedral . . .
do you plan on doing any indoor tile sets?

Mike2494 February 25th, 2008 6:20 AM

The cathedral looks nice! Great coloring and shading...but i dont know if pokemon and religion are corresponding subjects...

Kroko_Boy February 25th, 2008 8:52 AM

It looks quit nice, but it seems like the two rooftops on the sides are viewed from a different angle. But the shading and stuff is fenominal

DarkPegasus February 25th, 2008 1:03 PM

I have to agree with Cronos on this one. I suggest that you lengthen the side roofs, and give them a darker shading (the new parts).
My friend made an example:
