That overworld is amazing Alistar.
Of course I have told you lots of times about your tiles ha.
I have a question- and I know again- I've asked before.
Why jpeg it and ruin it?
Jpeging will not only pixelate (I think I spelt that wrong) it but also ruins the colour of the image.
I'm sure no one is going to stel those tiles- since they are like 32 by 32 tiles.
Plus, I think it's a fair comment to point out that people who have stolen tiles from you in the past create projects that go no where. So you have nothing to worry about.
A nice PNG file is on my wishlist :P

Avatar May 8th, 2009 5:58 AM

It's more of a precaution after what happened to Kyledove's MMO tiles (among other things)
You'd probably not want to take too many chances.

Samson May 8th, 2009 6:58 AM

hmm i really like this, simple, clean-cut style of OW spriting. my only issue is that the trees befit everything else. the thing with all the trees is that the shape and outlining aren't nearly as defined as all the other objects.

i would suggest going back over the trees and using 1 point pixel around the edges of both the exterior and interior to create more detail so that they blend in better.

Alistair May 8th, 2009 11:05 AM

@ Neo-Dragon: You would be surprised at what some people do. They don't care if it doesn't fit, they only care if it looks good. And I have also seen some of my tiles used for non-Pokémon related things, too. The only reason why I am keeping my OW's as PNGs is because no one can really use them without the animations.

@ Avatar: Exactly.

@ Samson: Yeah, I have been working on the outline for quite a while now, though it appears I have not been. It was even more simple before, believe it or not.

Anyway, I should have some more sprites done, and I could possibly have a private gallery opened with everything PNG. I am also working on some new tiles, and I am working on some animations for weather. All soon to come (though some will be earlier than others).

/Circa May 8th, 2009 4:00 PM

The thing I noticed is all the ground tiles are the same pattern :o. Try change the grass pattern every few tiles, but not by too much. Plus I reckon add some cracks into the pathways I think it'll make them look that tad better, Unless your going for that perfect look.

Other than that, it's all pretty darn good.

Alistair May 14th, 2009 12:19 PM

@ Punk Rocker: The grass is being worked on. I know, reusing a tile from a 16x16 set in a 32x32 set isn't a good idea, but I was being a bit lazy. About the details, as I said earlier, I am going to work on finishing the set before I think about small details (though I will make them, so don't worry. They just aren't a priority at the moment).

Well, I didn't really get any time the past couple days to do what I said I would. I got caught up studying for the AP Chemistry test. Now that it is over (as well as some other things on my to-do list), I can start spriting again. I did a snall overworld of one of my real life friends. Here is said sprite, as well as the final style for the overworlds.

Wow, awesome tiles! My only complaint would be that there doesn't seem to be a consistency in color scheme.. you know what I mean?

sab May 16th, 2009 5:25 AM

they look great alister! I think your friend's face looks a little weird though...

Alucus_Of_Borg May 26th, 2009 6:38 AM

well alistair i dont quite know what to say the diversity of your tile spriting skills is amazing i dont think that there is a single one of your public tiles that i cant use ill have to adapt some of them to match the pallet set that im using great job seriously great job

Alistair May 26th, 2009 10:42 AM

Thanks for the comments, guys. Glad to see someone might be using them, too.

Anyway, things have been a bit busy for me lately. Thus, I have not been able to sprite much, or even work on game concepts (for the game that is going to use those private tiles). I will try to post something as soon as possible.

np7261 May 31st, 2009 2:55 AM

Really nice. I wish I was as good as you...

Alistair June 18th, 2009 12:46 PM

Sorry for the recent inactivity. I just really haven't had time to come here or to sprite.

Anyway, in lieu of Heart Gold and Soul Silver, I have been working on a new house. Of course, it isn't an exact replica (mainly because I was trying to sprite a house like it before the anouncement of HG and SS, but I couldn't get it to look right). Here is what it looks like so far. CAUTION! It isn't done, and it's JPEG.

http://img526.imageshack.us/img526/1453/houseinprogress2.jpg

sab June 19th, 2009 3:51 AM

It looks to me like the only thing the jpeg affects right now is the railing so I don't see a need for it,but It's your call. any way Its hard to rate this building because it is almost all outlines. the shape looks good and the jpeg almost adds a texture to the roof. the colors youv'e used look good. the only thing I could think of is maybe add shingles to the roof and color the rest in.

SytheXP June 19th, 2009 6:00 AM

love the house outline..... Ive been trying my hand at spriting tiles here lately Ive found they can be fairly tricky. The detail on the stones of that house are amazing cant wait to see the finished product

Well, I scrapped the HG/SS house I did. I just didn't really like how it turned out.

Anyway, here is something new I have been working on. It's a broadcasting tower. Obviously not done yet, but just to show I have found some free time lately to try and sprite. By the way, the colors are not permanent. They will change.

And finally, sorry to put this in an attachment. ImageShack is not working for me at the moment.
Well, I have been doing a little work. Still having a hard time to find time, but whatever. Anyway, here is a new mini map to show off some new things. First off, the water. What you cannot see, though, is that it is fully animated. A full 7 frames. Second is the sign. It says something in Japanese, so try and guess. Oh, and another little comment: I redid the outlines to the trees a little.

Wow, I love the angle of the billboard. But something on the cars is missing for me, the colors seem a bit to dark on the purple ones.

Great job though my friend ^^

everything looks great! the only thing is, don't streets have lines?

Atomic Reactor June 27th, 2009 4:21 PM

The cars need windshield wipers.
:)

shinylugia249 June 27th, 2009 4:28 PM

Nice tiles alistair but I feel as if the billboard is going to tip over any minute. Maybe you could add some supports on the pole. Other than that nice work!

About the lines in the streets, I will make them eventually. The cars have always seemed incomplete to me, but I have been too lazy to do anything about it. XD

Anyway, I have not really had much time to sprite lately. I decided to continue work on the HG/SS house I was doing, so I decided to include it on the sheet, even though I have done nothing to it yet. The colors of the unfinished parts of the roof of the large building are subject to change.

So, in recent news, I decided I was going to redo an old piece I did, in honor of HG/SS. It's the Shuckle pixel art I did a while back. I completely reshaded it and gave it a new background. I don't think it turned out too bad, but please give me feedback as to how I could improve it.

Lady Berlitz July 12th, 2009 6:20 PM

Very nice, Alistair! I really like this one. Everything is perfect, but the lighter areas of the grass look as if they were just scribbled in, and the flowers look sort of oddly shaped or coloured. Also, I'm not too fond of the lighter outlining for Shuckle (mainly the bottom), since the grass looks slightly darker, and it doesn't look like Shuckle is popping out from the grass.

the reason you don't like it as much is because there is no definit outline on the shuckle. look at the pho tileset compared to your "Tileset 2" on the front page.

You, sir, are epic! These tiles are awesome! Well done!

Alistair August 12th, 2009 6:44 PM

Well, as of now, the 32x32 set is on hold. I have been really busy lately, and they just take too much time to make.

I have asked permission from Kyledove, and I am going to be making my latest public tiles in his style. I was working on some new Acanthite tiles, but I reinstalled Windows and forgot to back them up. Of course, I am going to remake them to the best of my ability, but for now, here are some new tiles in Kyledove's new style. As with his tiles in this style, they are public use. Just remember to give credit, please (to both me and Kyledove).

Once again AMAZING job Alister! The only thing that bugs me is the tree. The top color where the tree has it's lightest shade is a bit too light.

Alistair August 15th, 2009 11:56 AM

Thanks for the comments, guys. Especially yours, Kyle, since it is your style. :)

Anyway, just another small update. This building took me a long time to get it to the point where I like it, so I am posting it now instead of waiting until I have more done. I also made a very small, incomplete map to show it off. Well, here we go.

Curt_09 August 15th, 2009 5:54 PM

Wow Alistair your tiles achieve higher levels of awesome every day.
BTW, I'm using some tiles I found in the ROM Hacking Resources, including some I took out of the ROM Base on the bottom of the list. Credits to you of course, but I'm just wondering - all of the tiles in that base are yours right? FenderX just inserted? Gotta know who all to credit there.

Luck August 15th, 2009 10:18 PM

The Kyledove styled buildings are amazing, but I don't have such similar feelings to the trees. It seems too big to be known as normal trees. I hope you use those palettes more, because they are very lively colours.

Alistair August 18th, 2009 11:36 AM

Yeh, I didn't really pay attention to the size when I was making the outlines to the trees. >.< That's why they are huge. Although I think they turned out a little better than they would have if I downsized them.

Anyway, a couple of days ago I posted an updated map on my dA account. I couldn't post it here, mainly because I just moved to my new apartment and I haven't had internet. Well, I managed to get signal from the church accross the driveway today, so I am going to post it now.

http://fc07.deviantart.com/fs46/f/2009/228/a/2/Greenwood_by_TheDeadHeroAlistair.png

I call it Greenwood. It is actually a newly developed town that serves as a resting point for trainers. The gym is the result of Grass-leader Violet's wanting to move to a more subtle environment. Notice how there are no marts or centers. That is due to the hospitality of the residents of the town. The bigger house is home to the Berry Trader, a woman who will exchange specific items on specific days for rare and exotic berries. She also makes PokéBalls out of Apricorns. As soon as I make grass tiles, I will make the "Before" map.

I know there are a few errors here and there, so please don't point them out to me. I really just don't want to fix them. Oh, and as you know, credit to Kyledove for some of the tiles used. Thanks a lot, bud!

Oh, and one last thing. Anything I map you can use in your fangame, ROM hack, whatever, too. I don't really use them for anything, so feel free.

venom12 August 18th, 2009 11:42 AM

The maps and tiles looks great, i want to see more maps tiles from you, good luck.

Luka S.J. August 18th, 2009 2:05 PM

I don't think the grass pallette from Kyledove goes well with the one you are using. May I suggest making it a bit darker to try to match it with the trees.

Alistair August 18th, 2009 2:07 PM

Actually, that palette is his, too. I was going to mess around with the palettes a bit, anyway. I do like using my own stuff rather than having to rely on others'. That's not to say I don't enjoy using his style, though. ;)

MiniEggs August 18th, 2009 2:16 PM

they are all really amazing! keep up the good work!

~*!*~Tatsujin Gosuto~*!*~ August 19th, 2009 1:07 PM

these are simply amazing but I do agree with Luka on this one, you should make the tablets darker to match with the trees

:t354:TG

Alistair August 22nd, 2009 7:41 AM

Just another small update. I haven't had too much time to work on these, so I have not achanged any palettes yet. Also, the new building just seems a little incomplete to me. Would you guys mid givin me some ideas as to what I could do to make it seem a little more complete?

Esper August 22nd, 2009 10:23 AM

Perhaps putting a car/bicycle/workshop in the garage, a balcony under one of the windows (for flowers or something), or a satellite dish or solar panels on the roof (unless that is a solar panel and not a skylight).

You're improving every time. All I can say is, you're awesome. I checked out your first post, and well, I thought they were okay. But now when I look at these, I'm really excited to see more! Awesome work there.

Alistair August 24th, 2009 10:10 AM

Well, haven't done anything with the new building, but I did remake an older map of mine: Ochre Town. I obviously added some new stuff to it, but otherwise, it just recieved a new tileset.

Tropical Sunlight August 24th, 2009 10:37 PM

It looks great!
I was just wondering, the big house has a soft green in its lower right corner, and it doesn't match the grass color and it has no shading O.o
What is that?

Jαcκςση August 24th, 2009 10:59 PM

These newer tiles are a HUGE improvement. Great work. I also love the creativity, especially the gym. Keep making stuff in this style it's really good. Better than your older tiles because there is much more sense of depth involved. The 3D effect is done nicely.

M4CK_M4YN3 August 24th, 2009 11:43 PM

those are some great tile sets any tips would be awsome

Alistair August 25th, 2009 3:57 AM

Thanks, guys. Glad to see you really like this new stuff.

@ Colorful Summer: It's mainly he line extends all accross the bottom of the building.

Anyway, I worked on something a little different, recently. I haven't worked on one of this since I was making my ROM hack Pokémon Harmony. It's a new region map, and it's going with my remapping project. I made it in a mostly HG/SS style, but added some of my own style to it. No part was actually taken from the HG/SS map, though, it was all sprited by me. Included in this post is the kit, if you want to make a region yourself.

see the rest of that one mountain.

Alistair September 2nd, 2009 6:36 AM

Yeah, I really don't like it either. I don' know what I was thinking when I did it. XD

Anyway, slight tileset update. I added a new buildling, some new pieces for it, my own grass tile (complete with my own palette) and a path tile. I also changed the bright grass and the paths in my Ochre Town revision to the new ones.

:t354:TG

Alistair September 11th, 2009 12:47 PM

Yeah, I see what you mean. I'll change it.

Anyway, I posted this on dA a while ago, but haven't posted it here yet because, well, I don't know. But anyway, I made a new building. It is kind of a new ferry dock, but it can be whatever you want it to be. I know it's quite bright, and I do plan on altering the palette a bit.

And I haven't been spriting lately for multiple reasons. I have been working on how to draw (which is something I suck hard at), I have been doing homework, and I have been playing HeartGold version and Animal Crossing.

But yeah, I'll make some new tiles eventually and some maps to go with them.

http://fc02.deviantart.com/fs28/f/2009/254/3/a/Latest_Tileset_So_Far_by_TheDeadHeroAlistair.png

~*!*~Tatsujin Gosuto~*!*~ September 12th, 2009 7:32 PM

I think you should change the shadowing under each of the pictures to a different color so the 6th building looks proper (the one with the pool on top). Also for the 7th building I think you should put windows crossing the full building but other then that I love the coloring and shading of these

:t354:TG

Alistair September 14th, 2009 6:55 PM

About the shadows, the reason they are all that color is because that is the color I have set as the transparent color in RPG Maker. I do that because I make my maps in RPG Maker, and because it actually gives them the shadow effect on the maps. About the windows, I can see where you're coming from. I'll try it the next time I get into a spriting mood.

Anyway, let's not all comment at once, guys. >.<

Joking aside, I have some new things to show you. I made a new tree. The old one seemed quite out of place compared to the rest of the tiles, and it didn't really fit in with the tiles everyone else is making in this style. I also made a new grass, because I always thought the hand-drawn one looked really weird when put into a map.

sab September 15th, 2009 4:47 AM

brilliant tiles as always alister! I don't like the new tree as much as the other one but, eh, such is life. the grass looks perfect, and it flows beautifuly in this map. keep up the good work!

Alistair September 16th, 2009 5:37 AM

Thanks for the comments, guys.

@Sab: I honestly would have never thought someone likes the old tree better than the new one. I may still use it every once in a while.

Anyway, I have started to piece together my fan-maps to make my fan-region Turra. As you can see here, I pieced together the starting town (Silver Town) with the first route (Route 112) and the second town (Greenburg). When I get the chance, I'll update the region map to include the area below Silver Town, as well as do some various improvements on it.

But yeah, credit goes to Kyledove for some of his amazing tiles. This map project is going to be one of the few where I don't actually make all the tiles myself, and use others' to speed up the process. Of course, the majority of them will be mine, though.

BEWARE! Large image.

Neo-Dragon September 16th, 2009 8:28 AM

Your buildings are so different then everybody else's work. The colors smack my eyes when I look at them, but not in a bad way, it really grabs my attention.
The green color used for the path in the lower part of the map is a real sick green or something and looks like it has no detail because of the colors (the pixels on the path are barely noticeable).
The new trees are great. I love the shading at the top part the most.

Oh and the dusty path (or whatever it's called, the brownish yellow path lol) looks great with the more rounded corners.

Andrew McKenzie September 18th, 2009 8:57 PM

Hey Alistair. It's nice to see you're still at the great work.
It seems you've definitely improved from the last time I viewed the thread(a half of a year ago).

I'm working on a Pokemon Comic and I was wondering, with your permission and where credit is due of course, if I could use some of your older tiles and some of your newer ones.

I know I have to steer clear of the tiles you mark as special permission and only for certain people so I'm just asking about the other ones which are public domain.

Of course, they are your tiles and your license clearly states you have the right to refuse me permission.
If you say no then I won't bother you about them again.

I just love the way you did these buildings

It seems you've definitely improved from the last time I viewed the thread(a half of a year ago).

I'm working on a Pokemon Comic and I was wondering, with your permission and where credit is due of course, if I could use some of your older tiles and some of your newer ones.

Plenty of people use Alister's tiles for comics. If your wondering which ones are for public use and which ones aren't, I cleary remember Alister saying that any tile not specificly stating that is not for public use, can be used. Then again Alister could have changed his rules about comics, but I don't think he did.

It's alright now, I got him over PM and he said it's all good, that he just needed to know who was using them, etc and what for.

As for continued work Alistair, I wish you good luck, your stuff is excellent as always.

Those are some incredible tiles, I don't know what it is about them, but they really grab my attention. Everything seems to flow together nicely. Excellent work with these tiles.

Alistair September 29th, 2009 9:14 AM

Well, I haven't really been spriting many tiles lately. I updated the set a while ago with an edit of an already existing building, but never posted it here. So, I will.

In addition to that, I am starting work on a pixel art comic. I made the main character, Harv, and here he is. I know it's lacking in detail, but I hope to improve as I sprite more.

Yep. It's a good map in general. They're all his tiles all except the houses, and the mailboxes. Anyway great updates Alister. The only thing I dont like is the little grass. I know wild grass is hard to make, but you've done so good on the rest of your tiles, it would be ashame to make this one bad...

Alistair October 14th, 2009 5:22 AM

Okay, so guys, I am thinking about not making tiles anymore. It is something that I have been thinking about for a while. No, it has nothing to do with the little squabble with Ravecat in the Game Dev section and no, it has nothing to do with people rarely using my tiles. I have just grown really bored with spriting tiles. That said, I am thinking about doing some bigger pixel projects, mainly to increase my skills. What would you guys say to that?

Oh, and Sab, that is my mailbox. ;)

~JV~ October 14th, 2009 6:51 AM

Oh, I understand your point... Well, actually I'm using your new set of tiles, mainly the buildings, I thought they were the best you released. Anyways, good luck on whatever you're going to do, good luck!

Old Stuff
Spoiler:
Yeah, I'm not going to make anything like that for a while. Instead, I am working on this project at the moment.

I know, it has some anatomical issues and he has no feet. This is just a preliminary pixel-over of my original drawing. I just did the line art today, and I plan on fixing its issues and fully coloring it over the next week or so.

Well, I edited the first post. I compiled a bunch of my stuff. It's still not all of it, but most of it anyway. Click here to see it if you want.

GFA October 15th, 2009 12:24 PM

His legs seem a bit short. Also, his back is a little odd the way its hunched, maybe you should straighten it out a bit

Alistair October 15th, 2009 12:50 PM

I completely see where your coming from. His legs will definitely be elongated. About his back, I think that's because of the way I wanted him to be looking at you... Like he was studying your soul. Regardless, I will try my best to make it look better. I forgot to mention that there is an updated version in my first post. His left shoulder is redone, I gave him feet, and there are some more fixes that should be obvious once you look at it.

EDIT: One of my friends that I actually know in person is going to help me with it.

Chimchar 9 October 25th, 2009 5:29 PM

Alistair, your tiles are amazing.
They're all really nice.
Also, my hacks can't live without most of your tiles.
You've also inspired me to make my own tiles.
Please don't stop making tiles.

I hope you listen to me.:)

I guess you can keep the look like that, but it would look better if you could see more of the other eye. Also, his mouth looks odd, it should be moved more to the left if you ask me.

JY October 26th, 2009 2:23 PM

These are really good. I actually am envious.
