does anyone still play the older sets?
I am an old player, I haven't bought any cards since Neo Destiny (a few boosters excepted) and I understand that all the cards I have aren't allowed in league play. Is there still any organized play what-so-ever for the older sets?
There's an Unlimited Format, in which all English-language cards can be used (someone correct me if I'm wrong there), but it's a scarcely-played format.
I've got tons of old cards... I still use them though
Unlimited isn't very enjoyable. Too broken.
I don't play. I collect. But yes the old ones are the best!
Round my area, me and some mates play in a old-cards league - in which there are two formats: up to fossil (classic), and up to gym challenge (gym classic). Both are fun for a laugh (most of us are in the same situation as you, having only old cards), but the archetypes are very strong, especially in classic. Basically, everyone knows what the power cards are, and so it is basically Rain Dance, Haymaker, and Mime variants. Its easier to make rogue decks in gym classic, but even in classic the format varies a little, but usually in stuff like 'how many itemfinders to play'. The only breakout deck in recent times was charmeleon-electabuzz.
I play from all the cards right before Diamond and Pearl when they steroid pumped the cards making the old ones useless.
Are the old cards worth much anymore?
It depends on their condition. E.G., a mint condition 1st edition Charizard from the Base Set could be worth up to 200$ (250, if you are a scammer :P)
How much would a mint condition Ancient Mew be worth then?
I think the older sets are better, the newer ones just aren't as original |
Well, people want cool classic ards like base chari. Nobody wants Ancient Mew who hasn't already got one.

*goes and checks my version*
Err, doesn't have either? Just a stylised ancient mewish version of the normal one... |
all i use are the base and fossil with a few dark. i haven't played in forever but found out my roommate was a nut back in the day too so we play every once in awhile.
are there rules these days where i can't use my old school decks? or just so out of date they won't have decent stats? |
My best deck is of almost only old cards. I play with DarkCrobat from Rocket returns, but my Trainers are old (removal, itemfinder, oak, computer searcH). The only new Trainer is rare candy.
I like the old cards more. My first deck was a rain dance and it's better now when I've added newer cards to it, like Gyarados EX. I woder why new cards are often not as good as old. It's not just in Pokemon, it's in Magic as well. The only game that wasn't like that was Lord of the Rings, (because they seperated the cards into fellowship, two tower, return of the king and standard instead of type1 and type1 as in magic), until now when all old cards are not playable at all. |
I strictly follow the restrictions, my deck contains much of the D/P cards. I never play unrestricted, never liked it actually. I wouldn't even have any advantage of my old cards.
some old cards can have some good combination with the new one
just don't throw away the old cards simply just the international card format had changed |
Heh, I didn't even know older sets were banned. Which sucks for me, as I was thinking of using my giant tackle box of old cards (I stopped collecting cards long before Hoenn cards came out, but I had a huge stockpile from the base and neo sets) to make a decent deck. Well, I'm way too much of a cheapskate to buy cards again anyway. ;P
I only have the old cards since they stopped selling them for a long time. The last booster I bought was one from the Team Rocket set. But I've hardly touched them for a long time...

I certainly play with the Unlimited format. I don't know, I can't find the pleasure in the Nintendo-on cards with few exceptions: Aqua/Magma, Team Rocket Returns, FR/LG, Hidden Legends. At the time I was still in (03-04), the trainer engine was difficult for me, as it was Supporters, Supporters, Supporters or flip-dependent/not with the cost. I know it's changed considerably since then and I'm liking the D/P engine, so I dunno.
Don't assume everyone plays broken, as I've seen some interesting range. And I've also seen my share of Rain Dance, Sneasel/Slowking, etc. I usually do a good job dealing with them, usually. But I certainly get why Nintendo doesn't do Unlimited, for you need to spend to get the right Modified. I personally don't care for it, but whatever. I know Nintendo didn't do Unlimited in Origins in 06, and I didn't bother to check this year. Bah. I thought Destiny was it, but I did enjoy the e-sets (loved Aquapolis/Skyridge). I'm just an old gamer, so take my musings with a grain of salt. Heh. |
I have some old pokemon cards up for sale if anyone is interested, Mint Condition, perfect holographics, very low price, just message me, I have them up for sale on E-bay already =)
I still play them with my cousins...
Its really sad that Official tourneys won't accept them anymore T_T; *Sobs over binder of cards* |
I been looking for people that still play with the older sets via online or in person. I live in NYC for anyone interested in playing real time and my AIM for online players is KennethSpealing.
