The 100 Mega Shock October 25th, 2010 2:31 PM

That is a point, usually I don't make the animations flow that fast for a single blink frame to be an issue.

Missingno.7-4468 October 27th, 2010 5:21 PM

For once I made a scratch sprite =D

Anyway, this was pretty random, and I was doing it mostly to test myself. It's inspired by some of the Dragon Quest aquatic monsters and such ~

http://img338.imageshack.us/img338/4452/thingforcou.png

I would just like some C+CC. Personally, I think it's one of my...better scratch sprites. Mostly because I (Normally) suck at lineart xD

Anyway, what do ya'll think?

Involuntary Twitch October 30th, 2010 1:52 PM

...Wow, ok, we could all definitely do with some sprite education, right? Which is why it's again time for another short-notice Pocket Spriter livestream!

Pocket Spriter #6: Spriter Mage Thief is on at 7:00 (that's EST) tonight, at http://www.livestream.com/pocketspriter ! (7:30 is the rain date, in case we don't have enough attendance at 7.) As usual, Medical Meccanica (Seika) and myself will talk about spriting Pokemon, Fakemon mostly. We'll be on skype, so if you have skype you can join in!

Also introducing the "____ tips" panels, which will be a recurring thing in PSF from here on out. We'll design a fakemon of a specific type, usually according to viewer suggestions.

Panels are as follows!

Hosted by Zephyr+/Twitch/InvoluntaryTwitch: 7:00-8:30

Aviator Tips: Making Flying-types that don't suck
Sprite Critique Block: Post your sprites and get some in-depth feedback!

Hosted by Seika/MedicalMeccanica: 8:30-Happy Hour

Gardening Tips: Making Grass-types that don't suck
From the Pages of Our Ancestors: Fakemon from mythology
Happy Hour: Anything Goes!

Again, the link to the stream is here:

Be there, ok?

A while ago I decided to have a go at spriting so I came up with this 007 squirtle, it was my first sprite and people at the time said it was good but I'd still like to know how to improve.
I also did a hurried Cyanna character design, but obviously I just used an existing sprite, I'm trying to do an original one but i'm a little rusty and still don't have much practice, so please criteque and help me out ^^

For future reference, if you have edited sprites they'd be better off in the thread for fusions and recolors to differentiate them from scratched work.

As for how you could improve, your hair extension is a little choppy. There are some areas of the outline where you move from 1-pixel diagonal lines to 2-pixel wide outlines, then back to 1, then to 2 again. It doesn't flow as smoothly as it would if you didn't jump back and forth like that. Some of the darker lines in the hair have gaps in them that I wonder if they really need to be there and some other areas of the outline have the tetris-block, side-to-side connections where a diagonal connection would work better (look at the left most area for an area where this is happening).

M4, I merged your post into the showcase thread since you need a few more sprites to 'earn' your own thread.

One thing you sprite needs in consistency in its style. The head and part of the cape have very faint outlines while the sword and armor have dark, distinct ones. The shading on the armor isn't bad, but it doesn't really give a sense of the shape the armor has. Same for the cape, which could some shading even more than the armor, so it looks more like fabric than a flat shape of color.

Haven't sprited a fakemon in a month or two? Maybe a half? I was busy observing the style and i'm a bit close..I think. I'm mostly wanting criticism on the lineart and outline colouring.

Plus everyone should go visit the Pixel Art Duel Arena.

The first one is really darn cute. There's something about the yellow area on the head of the second one that seems off to me. I'm not quite sure what I'm looking at, but it looks a tad flat.

The colors on the first one work well, but I'm not as convinced about them on the second one, though the blues are nice on both. My gut tells me that the body should be a lighter color than the wings and other parts, or perhaps more saturated like in the shiny version.

The nose barrel looks a little off. It shouldn't end in the center of the 'head', but more to the front/side of it, probably somewhere equally close to both eyes. I also see an uncolored pixel at the back and a little inconsistent shading. The front of the treads have a lighter color than the tops while the 'body' had a lighter top and a dark front.

I think you might want to try using more than just black for outlines on the tank. You get a more polished look that way. It worked well on your updated knight.

And maybe work on the eyebrows. They're a little simple and cartoonish. You could do something with highlights or shading to give them some depth.

HEY GUYS I JUST FOUND SOMETHING COOL ON PAINT LIKE OMG THIS WILL CHANGE SPRITING FOREVA!

So yeah, you know if you right click, you use the background colour, if you left click you get the foreground colour? Well there's a third colour you can use; hold down Ctrl and then select it, then whenever you want to use it, just hold down Ctrl. :D

Them Bones November 21st, 2010 6:43 AM

OH MY GOSH! It's true! This will help later on when I'm spriting. Thanks for telling us!

Que? That was my spriting tip "of the month" for, like, three months. :\

Does nobody read them? I guess that means you guys don't know about Quick Copy, Custom Brush, or 10x Zoom....

Spherical Ice November 21st, 2010 7:46 AM

I know about "Quick Copy," but have no idea about the others. And there was a long period of time (like four months) where it was the same tip so I assumed you were no longer doing them. >:

Mind telling us about the others, though?

Chesu November 21st, 2010 8:00 AM

I've been changing them as regularly as I can remember to, but I usually answer PMs and VMs more than I post in threads, so I rarely see my signature and think of it.

To create a custom paint brush in Paint, first draw your image. You can make it a circle or square larger or smaller than any of the current brushes (for example, if you wanted a square larger than 2x2 but smaller than 5x5), or any shape you want. You can also use as many colors as you want. Then, hold down the Shift key and drag your shape. It will act exactly like the Brush tool.

10x zoom is easier; click the Zoom tool, then look at the sizes available. There's an invisible, single-pixel-tall line directly under 8x, above the little beveled box surrounding the options, that will activate 10x zoom when clicked.

Spherical Ice November 21st, 2010 8:09 AM

(btw the caps in my other post were a joke)

Hm, I was under the impression that you could actually use it as a custom brush; I've known of that.

That's pretty cool for the x10 thing. Shame it's so fiddly.

The 100 Mega Shock November 21st, 2010 9:59 AM

why don't you just get paint.net

That's alright : D

You should also do back sprites and the fakemons should have more concept.
