Which R/B/G/Y Starter?

I was just pondering on which you guys think is the best :)

When I ponder, I need an answer :)

Ahh, the orginals. I have gone with Charmander. I LOVE it some much! They are the BEST!!! OMG I LOVE THEM YAAAAAY CHARMANDER

Yes, I am a little, ok very obssesive over Charmaders, they are sooo cool.

diyobs004 October 31st, 2007 7:35 PM

squirtle

im gonna say squirtle because it has the least amount of weaknesses.

~*!*~Tatsujin Gosuto~*!*~ November 3rd, 2007 8:39 AM

I always picked Bulbsaur, because it rocks and it rules.

:t354:TG

TheSpatialZam November 3rd, 2007 8:54 AM

I pick squitle. I've always picked the water type! I don't know why!

SilencedShooter November 3rd, 2007 9:24 AM

Oh man, you gotta go with Bulbasaur.
A Venusaur with Razor Leaf, Sleep Powder, Toxic, and Sludge Bomb rules.

diyobs004 November 3rd, 2007 9:46 AM

i dont think sludge bomb exist in R/B/G/Y

Shadowz November 3rd, 2007 10:12 AM

I picked Squirtle because it Pwnz Brock

-Amso-

Drai November 3rd, 2007 10:17 AM

Charizard is definitely a great final stage pokemon, it depends on the availability of what you're looking for later in the game too. An Arcanine is a good replacement for Charizard if you get a squirtle or bulbasaur.

Improfane November 3rd, 2007 10:21 AM

Bulbasaur - my first ever save.

He's the most fun starter. You get to have fun leech seeding and poisoning or paralyzing!

Scales November 3rd, 2007 12:51 PM

Charmander. Since he was always my first starter back when I first got pokemon. Now that I have mastered playing pokemon games now I still pick him for a challenge against brock and Misty

Scytheteen November 3rd, 2007 12:56 PM

Squirtle. He is like, the easiest to start with

starfox200 November 3rd, 2007 1:07 PM

Charmander because of Charzard

Joey the Cockroach November 3rd, 2007 1:45 PM

Definately Bulbasaur because it is good against ground and water types and ultra effective against rock types when it learns vine whip. i think it learns it at level 13.

bitter_doom November 3rd, 2007 3:06 PM

squritle cause i just like him... and blastoies... and ever since i got a shiny squritle from starters i choose him straight away

Scales November 3rd, 2007 3:19 PM

Actually Squirtle is the medium difficulty. What I like about pokemon games is they choose the difficulty in which starters you choose. Since Bulbasaur is a grass type it can defeat Brock and Misty very easily. Plus when you are facing Surge he can't get a super effective on you. So Bulbasaur is the easiest to start with

Squirtle however can defeat Brock but Misty is the exact same type. So there are no good bonuses there. Plus Surge can kill it in like 1 hit

Charmander is very hard to beat Brock and Misty with. So he is the hardest

If you have trouble beating the gym leaders you fail :/ Unless you go at them with incredibly low-level pokemon with terrible disadvantages, but that isn't so smart. You are correct, though. Just pick the one that will do best on your team for competitive battling...if you aren't doing that, just pick your favorite, which is either blastoise or chari, though I like 'em all.

Houndoom666 November 3rd, 2007 5:59 PM

If you want to pick Squirtle here is a good thing to do.

I remember when I pick squirtle,After I beat Brock and Misty I go to battle everyone on the S.S Anne and I go to train in Diglett cave. I do this and normally by then I have a Blastoise lvl 38 or 39 and I have a ground move or another move other than water and I pretty much have my game started the way I want it.

Grovyle42(Griff8416) November 3rd, 2007 6:11 PM

It's a really tough question for me. I like all of them. I'll say Charmander.

Tsugaru November 3rd, 2007 7:26 PM

I actually picked all of them, I was still new to Pokemon and was having a tough time with Brock and Misty with Charmander as my starter and then I just decided to play the game over with each new starter, In the end, it was Bulbasaur.

luke November 3rd, 2007 8:36 PM

Definitely Squirtle and Bulbasaur. <3 Though I'm a fan of Charmander. However, I feel most of the starters are slightly overrated. =/

they're very overrated IMO. Besides swampert and infernape, none of them have really been OU...maybe venusaur, but it was nothing you were afraid of at all.

Rainfall November 3rd, 2007 10:36 PM

Charmander, just because its a challenge to train. My favorite starter is Bulbasaur, but its just too easy for me, and I rarely like to do things the easy way.

LaurenLOVESTONED November 3rd, 2007 10:45 PM

Charmander for the win! he is the spunkiest little pokemon ev-uh

TNT November 4th, 2007 3:55 AM

squirtle. i dont like the other 2 much...

The great thing about the Pokemon games is that you don't have to take a competitive slant (people vs people) to the game if you don't want to. The more you take the easiest route through a game, for the sake of it being easy - every time you play it, you reduce the replayability of that game.

Quote:

If you have trouble beating the gym leaders you fail :/
I find decisive wins are boring and unchallenging. I have trouble beating gym leaders. That doesn't make me 'fail'. You give me the impression that when you first got the game you never lost once. You knew all types by heart and knew which starter to pick...

The Wave November 4th, 2007 10:48 AM

charmander. I'm always obsessed with fire pokemon somehow...

The Infinite Devil Machine November 4th, 2007 12:02 PM

I always chose Charmander. Mainly because I had a dinosaur fetish back when I was five. 0_o

I still do now though. I love Charizard and I always use one, even today.

Zarluxan November 4th, 2007 1:34 PM

I choose Charmander. Its a little harder to start with him but later on he can deal really high damage.

ShadowTails November 4th, 2007 4:42 PM

Well, for a RBGY starter favorite, you sure did forget Pikachu.

Anywho, as far as design goes all 3 are cute. I never had much trouble with any of them, Bulbasaur has a hard time getting through the routes with Pidgey (you know, back when it knew gust as it's first move...) I've always though of going back to Crystal, breeding out a Charmander, going through Johto with it and see if the challenge is any harder with the 3 original starters or not... though I'm trying this for Johto at the moment: Croconaw, Elekid, Houndour, Gloom, Slowpoke, and looking for a 6th Pokemon, might go with Koffing (I'm trying to hatch a shiny one.)

I'd love to go through Johto and use Charmander instead of Cyndaquil, it'd be interesting.

Kitori_theTeamAquaSuicune November 8th, 2007 1:48 PM

I would normally pick Charmander, because:

A) My birthday Pokemon (Oct. 4th Charmander is Pokemon number 4 a ringin-a-bell?)

B) I like Chrizards.

C) Fire is my second favorite Type. (Would've gone for water, but I really don't like Squirtle that much. And since Lightning is my other second favorite type, that's outta the question.)

MewLover November 8th, 2007 7:05 PM

I usually pick Squirtle - I love water Pokemon, and I love Blastoise, so yep, Squirtle for me. (I think Wartortle is kinda hideous, but I bear it :P)

Sometimes I pick Charmander though, because I love watching him become a Charizard.

I never pick Bulbasaur, he's just not very appealing to me.

As for what people were saying about beating gym leaders and everything - sometimes I like a good old loss, a good old frustrating fight. A challenge is always good!

Hooh4ever November 8th, 2007 7:17 PM

i picked charmander
i always pick fire
xD

scratch the sleep powder and use body slam instead and it does rule!!!:cheeky:

Gerri Shin November 9th, 2007 4:39 PM

well seeing as the question was which R,B,G,Y starter was your favorite I'd have to say that Pikachu was my favorite cuz it posed a huge threat when battleing brock and Surge, even though they did give you mankey and diglett. (though if I Have to choose one of the original's I'd always go with charmander just cuz, and my brother's always said I had a fiery personality)

chews November 9th, 2007 11:26 PM

I voted for Charmander as i like charizard & fire/dragon types as alwayz

Red1530 November 10th, 2007 6:02 AM

I have used Charmander as my starter.

Eruption November 10th, 2007 6:03 AM

Bulbasaur/Charmander

Bulbasaur Because its cool.

Charmander Because its kind of cool and evolves into Charizard.

spike6958 November 10th, 2007 8:04 AM

well i would have said charmander like the rest of you but i desided to pick squirtle when i restarted FR and it's great (i got a female one and so nicknamed her Misty lol), bulbasaur makes the game too easy to be honest with bulba you only need to catch more pokemon so you can use HM where as with charmander and squirtle you need to train other pokemon

SilencedShooter November 10th, 2007 8:13 AM

^
I'd hate to only train Bulba....Sabrina would kill me.

Adelaide-Amber November 18th, 2007 1:43 PM

charmander for sure. idk why but i've always loved charmander and it's evolutions as well. charizard ROCKS. and i also have always picked the fire-type starters. i was sooooooo obsessed with dinosaurs and dragons back then too :)

J-Rad November 18th, 2007 5:46 PM

squirtle pwns charizard w/ surf and venasaur w/ ice beam

Yes, I am a little, ok very obssesive over Charmaders, they are sooo cool.

each of 'em was great... but all in all, I was very partial to Blastoise... good defenses, only 2 weaknesses, decent moveset, and could easily take down Charizard and Venusaur.

halowizard November 20th, 2007 3:54 PM

charmander... 100%...
nuff said

Lyra. November 29th, 2007 7:04 PM

i would have chosen squirtle because he totally DESTROYS Brock! but i would have chosen either squirtle or charmander

Lyra. November 30th, 2007 2:02 PM

i would either pick Squirtle or Charmander.

Zeturic November 30th, 2007 2:24 PM

Charmander. I always, in every generation, get the fire type. Fire is my favorite type, and the fire starter is always my favorite new pokemon; and every time there is a new Fire starter is also has become my new all time favorite pokemon. So, I chose Charmander.
I guess I didn't have to say Charmander because of my avvie though...

Ironicly, my favorite color is Blue but I prefer Pokemon Red and its mascot.

Binary December 1st, 2007 1:48 AM

Charmander is obviously the best at attack and stuff....But it actually depends how you train them. But according to me:
1.Charmander
2.squirtle
3.Balbasaur
Balbasaur isnt that strong and doesn't learn good attacks, thats why he is always last in my list

~Celebi

Lyra. December 1st, 2007 9:41 AM

yea i have always been known to like the originals! i remember like it was yesterday!
ahh... good times, good times!

Adelaide-Amber December 1st, 2007 9:51 AM

yes, yes, i remember playing the originals like it was yesterday too!! i remember my dad got me the yellow version cuz my step brothers wanted red and blue... so i had a pikachu... but i always liked charmander the best ^_^

Sora_8920 December 1st, 2007 12:02 PM

I like Blastoise because he's a great UU Wall.

Anxiety. December 1st, 2007 4:57 PM

Whoops, silly me, forgetting about Pikachu. I missed him because it doesn't actually count as a starter because you can catch them in the wild on all of the games... Sorry all whom wanted to vote on Pikachu!!!

MissMegano December 2nd, 2007 6:23 AM

Bulbasaur's so cute! He's my fave. I always pick him and never let him evolve into an ugly Venussaur. ;)

Agreed. Venusaur=Ugly, but I let my Bulbasaur evolve anyways.

I like all 3 of the original starters, but I normally pick Charmander. YAY CHARMANDER!

SuperDiddy December 6th, 2007 9:15 PM

Charmander was the best and one of my favorite fire pokemon

Hip-And-Happenin December 7th, 2007 2:06 AM

I have love for Squirtle & Bulbasaur. <3 They are both cool. Charmander is nice, too, but I don't like Charmeleon/izard.
But I don't usually go with the starters.

GSanky December 7th, 2007 9:16 AM

My favourite is Charmander, now.
But most of the time I picked Squirtle. Dunno why, I like water ^^

kokyuio December 7th, 2007 9:35 AM

squitles the best ,well its not really squirtle i like its blastoise hes so cute and strong *you may stroke his chin but beware of the water pumps*

Masterdoughboy December 7th, 2007 9:42 AM

My favorite is charmander followed closely by squirtle.

Ooka December 7th, 2007 10:15 AM

I'm all for Squirtle. It learns Ice Beam and Surf, which destroy it's counterparts.

SilencedShooter December 7th, 2007 11:16 AM

^ True.

I just have a lot of Bulbasaur and Squirtle love....I never pick Charmander. :-\

jb0000612 December 7th, 2007 12:24 PM

I personally always like Charmander and Bulbasaur. Those are perfect Pokemon Red starters.

moon December 7th, 2007 1:48 PM

Charmander's the one I always pick. There aren't many good fire pokémon in the old games (?what to replace Charizard with in that case?) and I sorta feel handicapped without one.
But okej, Bulbasaur is the cutest and the smoothest one. Leech seed+poisonpowder+cute bulb, what more to say? :)

Magmar, Rapidash, Arcanine, and Ninetails are pretty good fire pokemon.

Tony the Awesome December 7th, 2007 4:04 PM

I chose either Squirtle or Charmander.
They the bomb.
But sometimes,i choose Bulbasaur

Eevolution December 7th, 2007 4:08 PM

squirtle was my fave in 1st gen

damon66 December 7th, 2007 9:49 PM

ok heres the breakdown

charmander- hardest to start out with, charizard is weakest of the three
squirtle- easy to start out with, my personal favorite, solid in the end
bulbasaur- once you get him to lvl 14, its really easy to beat the first 2 gyms, venasaur is also good, but his big move solar beam is annoying to use sometime.

Charizard isn't the weakest, Starting with a Charmander is harder yes, but most of us like a challenge, not something I could do in my sleep.

Well I've always thought Rapidash had strange stats, Arcanine isn't available until way into the game and I can't get Ninetales or Magmar in Yellow, which is what I played ^^ But in the long run, I guess you're right.

jb0000612 December 8th, 2007 6:50 AM

You can buy a Vulpix in Yellow's Game Corner and evolve it with a Fire Stone.

Atomic Torkoal December 8th, 2007 12:59 PM

I'm torn between Bulbasaur and Squirtle, but I decided to go with Bulby.

Skaterzpenguin December 8th, 2007 1:17 PM

Squirtle is the best!!!!!!!!!!!!

Lunar Fang December 8th, 2007 2:30 PM

Classic-red December 12th, 2007 12:06 PM

I Always choose Charmander or Squirtle
Bulbasaur is for pro's (to hard to beat the E.L.4)

Jessie December 12th, 2007 1:20 PM

I almost always chose Charmander, they're just awesome! lol.

Water Pokemon are my favorite but I don't know...I just didn't really like having Squirtle as my starter. I don't really like Grass Pokemon, so I almost never chose Bulbasaur.

ElliottKaito December 14th, 2007 3:34 PM

Charamander! I like Bulbasaur- a lot, but y'know charamander is just a bit better. It's somewhat a pain to beat Brock with Charmander though.

jb0000612 December 25th, 2007 3:03 PM

If you have Red ad Blue, ad you picked a Charmander in Red, trade a Bulbasaur from Blue for another Pokemon, and you have two starters, plus an edge against Brock. Beware, the traded starters get a little rebellious around levels 10-11.

Cactus Twist December 28th, 2007 6:07 PM

I haven't played R/B/Y for a while, but I seem to remember starting with Charmander a few times, and it just being terrible. Now it is good, but before they split the Special stat, it was straight up bad. Blastoise is just the opposite, it was much better in R/B/Y than it is now. Venasaur has always been good

El Gofre December 29th, 2007 8:05 AM

As i only ever played in-game, it has to be the bulbasaur line, it rapes:
Brock
Misty
Lt surge (Due to resistance)
Giovani
Loreal
Agatha (Due to resistance)
Bruno's 2 Onix and Lance's Aerodactyl

Thats more than any other starter.

jb0000612 January 2nd, 2008 9:40 PM

Having 2 starters on a team is a general safety for me.

lostprophetsown January 5th, 2008 6:46 AM

i pretty much like them all,i picked bulbasaur first time then charmander and squirtle then started with charmander and traded them all off my other pokemon game XD

Dark Destiny January 11th, 2008 10:25 AM

you missed out picachu but i picked charmander =)

espenn January 11th, 2008 10:30 AM

I usually like Fire over anything (in RBY), but I prefer Bulbasaur... I like Venusaur :D

Although I usually don't use starters, I like having a team consisting of mostly "weaker" Pokemons like Vileplume, Kadabra, Haunter, Kangaskhan, etc...

Shiny Charizard January 20th, 2008 2:14 AM

CHARMANDER IS THE BEST!!!!!!

neonlights February 1st, 2008 11:55 AM

When i first played on it, i picked Charmander.
The next time i picked Squirtle.
The next time Bulbasaur.

Charmander owns though!

Zerrah. February 1st, 2008 1:14 PM

I love the Charmander line. But I also like Blastoise. Charmander is da bomb!! ^_^

The Virus February 4th, 2008 12:53 PM

Definitely Charmander. Although Blastoise is good too. =)

Super Wario 64 February 5th, 2008 11:06 AM

I chose Squirtle in my blue runs cause he's great and
IMO, Bulbasaur doesn't learn Vine whip until Lv14(?)
Here's my rankings of R/B Starters:
No.1: Squirtle
No.2: Charmander
No.3: Bulbasaur

~BlackHeartedWolf~ February 5th, 2008 3:53 PM

Charmader FTW. It's technically the strongest. It's also the cutest =D

Cactus Twist February 8th, 2008 11:01 PM

I tend to go with Bulbasaur, Venasaur is a great pokemon, but also there is a distressing lack of good grass pokemon in R/B/Y. As I said before, Charizard wasn't all that good in the first gen games, so Arcanine or Ninetails would both probably be better choices for your fire. With Squirtle, there are a ton of waters that could be just as good, if not better i.e. Gyrados, Starmie, Lapras, Omastar, Dewgong, Cloyster. If you don't take Venasaur, what are you going to replace it with? Victreebell? Exeggutor? or you could maybe go straight poison with Weezing or Muk. None of them can compete with Venasaur.

Jayster23 February 8th, 2008 11:11 PM

I pick all i put one in staduim box and then continue on doing the same thing but Charmander is the one who obeys me all the time

BeachBoy February 9th, 2008 12:01 AM

Charmander, beat the entire game with just him, train to charmeleon befor gym 1, and sweep the world, charmander is a beast >D

Charizard will own every thing in its path! >D

*Spark February 9th, 2008 3:23 AM

I think Charizard represents 1st gen the best. :)

so you're saying that it's WORTH the wait for a true grass type move *Vine Whip* when Bulba learns it at Level 13, Level 14 or Level 15?
and BTW, Venusaur is BL and so is Victreebel in the RBY competitive metagame according to smogon.com also Exeggutor is OU in the RBY Competitive metagame

XSeerian February 9th, 2008 9:15 AM

I seemed to be partial to the Fire type starters, because IMO they always have a much cooler design, even though I usually pick Totodile in Generation II, because...well...he's just awesome!

But seriously, it sometimes bothers me how much attention they put into the cool level of the Fire types final Evolution in the games, than any other starter type, even though...Cyndaquil's final form wasn't all too promising in my eyes.

~Drenz
