Claydol

Need some help deciding the best moves and stuff for him.
I was thinking about going with this:

[email protected]
Nature: Bold
EVS: 252 HP, 134 Sp Atk, 126 Speed
~Earth Power
~Ice Beam
~Stealth Rock
~Rapid Spin/Cosmic Power/Reflect ?

Any help is greatly appreciated :)

Keep Rapid Spin. It's handy for eliminating Spikes/Stealth Rock. Unless you have a Starmie in your team, keep this.
Ice Beam for grass/flying types was a good idea...this is also very handy for damaging Dragons such as Garchomp, which isd often a sweeper.
Earth Power for some stab...maybe replace with earthquake. It's stronger. Or maybe even Psychic to take out Gengar?
Stealth Rock - keep. Handy for attacking Togekiss/Dragonite as soon as they switch in.

as for EVs & items, what purpose is Claydol? Sweeper, Wall?

~Rest / Reflect / Light Screen
~Rapid Spin

Edit in bold. claydol HAS to spin. EQ gives it a physical attack to diversify it a bit. Psychic hammers gengars and heracrosses coming in on you hard. Ice beam is more towards the dragons really. it's your call. It needs some defensive help too. find another SRer.

That's my point of view.

Bold Nature + Earthquake = No good.
Wall mostly I guess, and as a starting SRer

Not sure about the EVs and whether they're any good..
I thought bold nature was a good idea, seeing as it had decent sp. attacking moves, and didn't need attacking moves, and it raises its defense to a nice stat.

+ Earth power is good for Metagross and Tyranitar

Oh, relaxed. It doesn't need any speed anyways.

But claydol has poor attacking stats. Its attacks are used mostly when you predict a switch-in.

TTar eats it like candy as does metagross. EQ will do more, or close to the same.

Relaxed, 252 HP / 148 Def / 108 SDef I think is the spread.

Since it's a wall with already decent defense, go for a spread that has Sp. Def, Sp. Atk and HP...Maybe:
200 Sp atk, 200 Sp Def 110 HP?
Your original one was most based around defense, which may be better off, but for more bite in your attacks, maybe some boost on the Sp. Atk wouldn't go amiss.

Also, stay with the lefties since it's a wall. If it was sweeper, I would have suggested a Choice Band or Life Orb.

EDIT:Anti-Pop beat me to the punch. Ah well.

Standard, dual wall Claydol....

[email protected]
252 HP / 114 DEF / 144 SP.DEF
Relaxed Nature
- Earthquake / Earth Power
- Stealth Rock / Reflect / Light Screen / Stone Edge / Ice Beam / Toxic / Rest / Explosion
- Rapid Spin
- Psychic

I believe this 100% needs psychic IMO to catch Gengar on the switch in whom often tries to block Raid Spin.

Earthquake and Earth Power for your standard STAB move.

Rapid Spin is self explanatory

Now the second slot, Stealth Rock, Reflect, Light Screen for team support, Stone Edge to chip away at Weavile and Gyarados (2HKO on Weavile with no att ev investment), Ice Beam for Bulky ground types and Dragons, Toxic to wear down Dusknoir, Spiritomb and Cresselia etc, Rest can be abused if you have an Aromatherapist, Explosion if you must, to go out with a bang.

@Sk8- Earthquake is better for Tyranitar seeing as it got that 50% Sp.Def sandstream boost this gen, however Earth Power is better for Metagross due to its weaker sp.def.

You should always put psychic as an option at least, as 75% of claydols I see have them and it works great on the puppet thing.

Azonic November 17th, 2007 11:01 AM

Oh yea, Psychic xD

I forgot about that. Claydol hates Gengars >:O

Anti November 17th, 2007 11:02 AM

Though most of those novelty sets from smogon are either poor or are run better by other pokemon. Claydol is good as it is.

i like the claydol calm mind set. i've been looking for a way to extend claydol's abilities. i think calm mind is exactly what i've been looking for.

Eos Aduro November 17th, 2007 12:48 PM

I dont think Explosion is a good idea here, I think that Anti-Pops set is the best here.

Anti November 17th, 2007 12:53 PM

I think blowing up claydol as gengar switches in is a bad idea as well.

and if you're going to post a et similar to the standard, do post psychic. It is one of its most valuable moves, hammering gengar and heracross switching in. Claydol has a lot of options, you have to be open to all of them. Except explosion, I HATE that move on claydol. lol
