What to do with a shadow....

How exactly should I train a Gengar? I just got it in the Old Chateau this morning, and I figured this is one Pokemon I'll actually EV train. (*shocked gasps*) These are its statistics:

Shadow/GENGAR
Male
Level 16
Exp Points: 2535, 585 to the next Level (Untouched)
Jolly nature
Proud of its power. Likes sweet food.

Hp: 46
Attk: 29
Def: 27
Sp. Attk: 43
Sp. Def: 31
Speed: 45
Ability: Levitate (As if it can get anything else)

Spite (Tough)
Mean Look (Beauty)
Curse (Tough)
Night Shade (Smart)

I need a good moveset for both battling and contests. Any and all help will be appreciated.

please use this format:

pokemon @item **nickname
trait:ability
nature:
EV's

-move2
-move3
-move4

you should use this set

gengar @wide lens
trait:levitate
nature:timid/modest
EV's: 252 Speed /252 Sp.Attack /6 HP
-t-bolt/energy ball
-hypnosis
-focus blast
-shadow ball

or

Gengar (M) @ Leftovers
Trait: Levitate
EVs: 196 Atk / 184 Spd / 128 SAtk
Hasty Nature (+Spd, -Def)
- Focus Punch / Hypnosis
- Ice Punch / Fire Punch / Giga Drain
- Substitute
- Thunderbolt

MCicegar (ive always wanted to say that)

these are for battling

Ew, Jolly nature. The Speed boost is nice, but Gengar needs his Sp. Attack. Either catch a new one or breed a new one (breeding is better).

Eos Aduro November 17th, 2007 12:52 PM

Timid nature is THE ONLY nature a Gengar should have, and this is one of the best sets

Gengar-Wide Lens/Focus Sash
Timid-252 Special Attack, 252 speed
Shadow Ball
Thunderbolt
Focus Blast
Hypnosis/Energy Ball/HP Ice

No, Hasty/Naive works also

Eos Aduro November 17th, 2007 12:55 PM

I prefer having more defenses, and unless you;re using a physical attacking move, Timid is the only

Modest is suicide. Oh, focus sash is an option.

Could you maybe decide what gen you're posting next time? It's obvious it was copied from compiled guides, maybe change it to a D/P McIceGar...

these are for battling

Gengar @ Leftovers
Trait: Levitate
EVs: 196 Atk / 184 Spd / 128 SAtk
Hasty Nature (+Spd, -Def)
- Focus Punch
- Substitute
- Hidden Power [Ice]
- Thunderbolt

Would be a more 4th gen version of McIceGar, since the elemental punches are physicle.

Can't help on contests though. I FAIL at those. lol

EDIT: Gengar shouldn't be taking hits anyways. Naive/Hasty works fine, preferably hasty. though timid is best for all special sets.

This sets purpose was to eliminate Blissey right?

Eos Aduro November 17th, 2007 1:01 PM

Well best 3rd Gen smart contest set is Mean Look, Destiny Bond, Shadow punch, Confuse Ray, not sure about 4th.

Skarmlbiss, but yeah. blissey with ice beam is kinda tough though :( that's why I prefer my Entei ;)

But McIceGar is still a nice Gengar, it works pretty well.

EmpoleMew November 19th, 2007 5:04 PM

I'm gonna catch some Ghastly to try some of these sets you suggested but I've decided to just do whatever I see good for this Gengar. So I'm going to ask for this thread to be closed.
