n00b(ish) Question.
I've recently started getting into building my own Teams, but as of now I've only been able to use Standard movesets, and would like to be able build my own from scratch.
So my question is, When deciding how to use a Pokemon, which parts of it's information, stats, etc. do you look at? This may seem a little obvious, but I'd like to hear how the experts do it. E.G Gyarados = The most common form of Gyarados I've seen is 'Tauntrados'. I would've never even thought of giving Gyarados Taunt. Where would this kind of idea come from? Why does Taunt work so well with Gyarados? I decided to make this thread was after seeing Standard Movesets used on several Pokemon, and then realising that I NEVER would've thought've such a moveset. ~Thanks for your help |
Simplw Q&A thread is were this probably belongs, i personaly look at IV's and Natures in there not good i ditch em

and I don't think I phrased my question well enough. I don't mean a specific pokemon that you own, I mean a Pokemon in general. E.G Gyarados; How would you decide how to use a Gyarados? |
Taunt is to stop PHazers and hazers from taking away your DDs. And dragonzilla, it's called "breeding."

When you're deciding how to use a Pokemon, for example, giving advice in the S & M Threads, how do you think of your movesets? and thanks Dragonzilla :) |

After all the help you gave, I will volunteer to help.
When deciding on a Pokemon's moves, you have a look at their BASE STATS. That shows you what moves they are suited to learn. For instance, Gyarados's Base ATK is 125. Very impressive. However, its base Special Attack is 60. Disapointing. However, its ATK is so high, who gives a crap? Don't bother with its weakest link. That tells you Gyarados is suited towards physical moves. By the way, 80-85 base power is considered "Average". For the moves themselves, look at the BASE POWER, as well as the type of move, be it special, physical, or other. Take Gyarados. It can learn a diverse movepool. For example, say it has Blizzard, Waterfall, Surf, Flamethrower, Stone Edge, & Earthquake. What to give it? You see its Sp.ATK is so low, Special moves are out of the question. Blizzard & Surf are out. Waterfall, while weaker, will do more damage from Gyarados than Surf & Blizzard. EQ is also nice, but makes it less diverse. So Stone Edge+Waterfall would be best. Diverse coverage, awesome power. Blissey, a famous wall. However, its ATK & DEF is SOOOO BAD, its sad to look at. However, its SP.DEF mixed with HP, makes it a prime SP.Wall, not physical. www.serebii.net is a great place to look at poke info. It makes a superb guideline. Go on the D/P Pokedex section. I'll give you more help later. My arm is cramped from Wii-typing. |
Thanks a lot everyone, but what confuses me most is when people give moves such as Fake Out to Pokemon such as Raichu and not to others such as Ambipom. Why is this?

Learn The Hidden Effect Of Moves Raichu is fragile. As such, it uses Focus Sash-When a move would normally be a One Hit KO (OHKO). However, it is wasted if he is hit too soon. Still, he hits hard & fast, but say another Focus Sash user survives the hit, & retaliates. But wait! He used Fake Out! Ruining the opponents Focus Sash, allowing you to finish em off uninterupted. Like Rapid Spin. Weak as a freshman with two limp wrist, but useful for removing Spikes & Stealth Rock-a bane of many teams. |
That's the kind of thing I was looking for :D
is it just a case of looking through every move and then seeing which would go well with the Pokemon's stats? Why wouldn't Fake Out be used on Ambipom then? Especially as it provides STAB, and is a physical move. EDIT: Oops, just checked Smogon, and apparently Fake Out WOULD be used on Ambipom; sorry. but still, hopefully you get the idea. There are cases where moves would suit a certain Pokemon, but are just never used. maybe I'm thinking about things too much though, and am trying too hard to find a 'hidden meaning' ;P |

EDIT:This is an example, as I don't use Ambipom. When you get better, you can use more creative sets. |

I said why Raichu uses it, but Ambipom can't use is the same way Raichu can because he's not on all out Damage like Raichu is. But I suck at that monkey.

Thanks v. much for the help Sims, I owe you one. :]
Is being in my Friends List good enough? :D |
I'm currently hunting the people who made "The wand of Gamelon". Know where they are?
|
haha! sorry, can't let you know. They're in hiding. ;D
