Need help on traning a Magikarp

I've recently aquired a Shiny Adament Magikarp, with decent IVs. Obviously, this screams "TRAIN ME! I CAN LEARN DRAGON DANCE!!!".

Anyway, I've never trained a Magikarp in EV before. So, what do you lot suggest? As it can't fight for it's self, i'd have to use EXP share, but I don't know the exact number of Evs that would be generated from it.

Thanks....

Adamant Nature
212 HP / 16 ATT / 180 DEF / 100 SPEED
- Waterfall / Earthquake
- Stone Edge / Ice Fang
- Taunt
- Dragon Dance

Standard Bulky Gyarados.

Waterfall and Stone Edge OR Ice Fang and Earthquake work best together in terms of coverage.

Taunt to stop getting whirlwind / Roared away , Hazed or Statused etc, so you can Dragon Dance up without much of a problem.

In regards to Exp share, the Evs given to magikarp will be given the same, so for instance you fight a starly for one point speed the pokemon given the exp share will also get one ev point.

Oh, I see. Thanks.

I was thinking of max out attack, then split the remaining between Speed and HP.

Nah, if you make it bulky it allows it to take hard hits and with those 16 att Evs you have 319 attack, which is still good and you have Dragon Dance to make its attack better and speed better. Its very effective when played right.

Those evs allow for the stats: - 384 HP / 319 Atk / 239 Def / 223 Speed.

Using Taunt allows you to exploit things that try and status, Haze or stat up on you by not letting them use non-damaging attacks. Without stating up /Hazing or Whirlwinding you they will do squat to you if you make it bulky thus allowing you to get in multiple Dragon Dances whilst loling at the attacks they throw at you and ultimately sweeping them.

223 speed allows you to outspeed Jolly max speed Garchomp after a single Dragon Dance

MegaMushroom07 November 24th, 2007 5:24 AM

Ok, thanks. How much does Dragon dance raise in Attack?

It raises it by 50%

So after one Dragon Dance you have 334 Speed and 478 attack

which = Good Game lol

Sora_8920 November 24th, 2007 5:32 AM

I thought it was 25%. O_o

Nope it is a 50% or X1.5 increase, and stuff like Swords Dance and Nasty Plot are 200% or X2 increase

MegaMushroom07 November 24th, 2007 5:36 AM

Yes, my Blissey has fallen to many of those....thanks again.

Anti November 24th, 2007 8:35 AM

I should point out that stone edge and EQ also have tremendous coverage and not at the cost of power. Quakeslide FTW.

I tried that but Claydol and Bronzong annoyed me so much when i went with that.

I then went with Waterfall and Earthquake and that was completely walled by everything under the sun.

I also tried ice Fang and Earthquake but poor Gyarados is generally weak without a STAB move.

I now have Waterfall and Stone Edge and i must say im generally impressed with it, i think the only things that wall you are Empoleon and Water Absorb Quagsire who dont really pose problems unless they pack Stone Edge or Hidden power Electric.

Coincidently, I have a Magikarp almost exactly like Mega's(different IVs). I want to know the best possible moveset for DDGyrados.

Um.

Gyarados (M) @ Leftovers / Life Orb ** The Sea Serpant of Time
Trait: Intimidate
Adamant Nature (+Atk, -SAtk)
- Dragon Dance
- Taunt
- Waterfall
- Stone Edge. :P

Um, life orb? Dude, you're giong to kill yourself...tauntrados sweeps teams, but only with something like lefties...something that doesn't leave it with 14 HP after two attacks :/

And could we actually list all the options? EQ is one of the best, and let's not forget ice fang...

Simply beautiful. I'll use Leftovers.

@Dark Azelf: Those EVs look promising.

Anti November 24th, 2007 2:24 PM

The EVs are standard on "Bulkydos." It gives it the ability to take lots of hits (more than you'd expect), and then DD up and destroy. Quite the monster.

LethalTexture November 24th, 2007 2:34 PM

As for training it, I raised mine to Lv. 19 in the Day Care, and then gave it a Rare Candy so it evolves. Then EV train it from there.

Although I run a straight 252 Att / 252 Speed / 6 HP on mine, I'd say go with Bulkydos.

MegaMushroom07 November 25th, 2007 5:02 AM

Well, I maxed attack, and then had about 50 in the defenses and speed. Then, I used the rest on HP. Seems to work.

sims796 November 25th, 2007 5:05 AM

Thats overkill. Bulkydos is better, & I speak from experience. Once Heracross comes, one Stone Edge finishes YOU off. If you go for the MAX SPD, MAX ATK, give it Choice Band.

I just woke up, so I'll try not to snap (I get pissed easily when I wake up).

Waterfall & Stone Edge offers great coverage without sacrificing any power, the best to me. Also hits Dragons hard, & OHKO's that bastard Heracross. While keeping a STAB.

EQ KO's Electric types, but other than Magnezone, not many Electric types can survive a STAB Waterfall anyway. Ice Fang, while a Dragon Killer, lacks power on all else.

However, Waterfall & SE also gives up something. It loses accuracy for power & coverage.

True, but he hasnt even maxed out speed lol (You shouldnt anyways for Choice Band. Evs for Choice Band are 72hp/252atk/184speed)

Seriously though, what are 50 EVS in Defense and Speed going to do for you ?

With that amount of speed and defense you will get loled at and will get Outsped by lots of things YOU should be outspeeding after a Dragon Dance.

MegaMushroom07 November 25th, 2007 5:18 AM

Well, I have a lot of HP, so it should take a few hits.

Yeah but it needs Defense to go along with hp if you really want to take hits.....and 50 Defense evs that you gave it will do nothing for it.

MegaMushroom07 November 25th, 2007 5:21 AM

I cloned beforehand, so it doesn't matter if I screw up.
