Shoddy or Net battle?

Hi all, ive just realised ive left my copy of diamond on the beach, so thats 50 shinies down the drain. Since i cant bring myself to buy and start again, i was thinkin of usin a battle sim. Thing is ive never used one, so if anyone could tell me how they work I'd appreciate it :)

airconditioning November 24th, 2007 5:54 AM

Yowch. That sucks.

Anyway, Shoddy and Netbattle are completely different- Netbattle is 3rd gen, Shoddy is 4th gen. Since you said you played Diamond, go with Shoddy. Just remember that the real competitive battlers hang around on Shoddy, so you'd better know your stuff.

El Gofre November 24th, 2007 10:33 AM

Yeah it really does :l
Few things i was wonderin:
How do EVs/IVs come into use on it?
Are ubers allowed?
Are event-specific moves available?
What items are available?

1. Yes, you choose the EVs and IVs.
2. Depends on who you're battling.
3. I'm not sure.
4. All of them. I'm assuming you mean held-items.

El Gofre November 24th, 2007 10:55 AM

yeah i do, thanx for that

so you can set your own IVs?

You can set them yourself, no muss or fuss.

Are ubers allowed?

For standard ladder matches, no. But some people allow ubers.

Are event-specific moves available?

Yep. I've seen Wish Shelgon, so yes.

What items are available?

All of them.

Edits in bold, and all that jazz.

As for which one to get, it depends on what gen you like better. But one of the great things about Netbattle is that there is a dfamage clac and it is genrally easier to operate. But both are fine ;)

But it is nice to be able to use wish hypno...

Sora_8920 November 24th, 2007 3:03 PM

I actually prefer NB. Way better. No lags. Much easier controls. And a lot much more.

Azonic November 24th, 2007 3:04 PM

I've never done NetBattle, but I assume it's very similar.
NetBattle is the Advanced Generation (RSE) Simulator and Shoddy Battle is the Diamond / Pearl Generation simulator.

As far as IVs and EVs come, there is a team builder tool. The team builder lets you choose your pokemon, moves, and what items they hold. All the items are on there and event moves too. Ubers are allowed if the opponent chooses to accept an uber battle. Its not allowed on standard matches though.

When you're in the Team Builder, you just type in your IVs and EVs of your desire. IVs are automatically set to a flawless 31 - but you can change it.

When using Battle Simulators, I suggest using 31 IVs in every stat (unless going for a specific Hidden Power) as everyone sets their Pokemon at that level. I love Shoddy.

I agree with Loquacity, it's best to run 31 IVs in every stat as almost everyone on there is probably doing the same thing. I don't think you have to worry about what Hidden Power move you get because you can select the one you want in a drop down menu [though that may only be if you are running a single HP move, and if you're running multiple you're going to have to adjust the IVs]. But, if you get Shoddy watch out for the lag and occasional disconnection.

Not neccesarily. I put 0 Speed IVs AND a Macho Brace AND Curse AND Relaxed Nature on my old Gyro Ball-ing Torkoal. Yeah...see how it ties together?

J-Rad November 24th, 2007 5:08 PM

hmmm i honetly am prefering NB at the point, probably cauz my laptop mouse it malfuntioning a little, long story short every time i click it moves the scroll bar down so unless i use prefect precision i can't edit movesets... so i've been using NB more and its kewler IMO...

Um, they were talking about in general, and that is REALLY overkill :/

I played NB once, and didn't like it. Mostly because I was a n00b with the three Kanto Starters and 3 legendary birds not at lv. 100. Oh well.
BTW, Shoddy is laggy because of the 120 people on a 100-man server. When it hit 150 once today, everybody was kicked off automatically. The notice says there'll be a better server next week, but it wouldn't be so much a problem if people used other servers.

Anti November 24th, 2007 8:25 PM

Well, Netbattle's damage clac is REALLY needed so you can keep track of things during battles.

Duncan McNeil November 24th, 2007 8:27 PM

I've played them both. Shoddy is better IMO, just because I don't play 3rd gen anymore. The lag is annoying, but its great to use to test teams before you spend all that time training them.

I don't do that. I do more attainable IVs for teams I don't own, and copy the IVs of teams I already have. I only use Shoddy for testing my teams, though.
