Gengar

I'm not sure what Gengar should I get. I've been thinking about two movesets.

Nature: Timid
item: Leftovers / Life Orb
EVs: 4hp/252spatk/252spd
Hypnosis / Hidden Power Ice
Shadow Ball
Thunderbolt
Focus Blast

Or

Nature: Hasty / Naive
item: Life Orb
Evs: 128atk/128spatk/252spd
Explosion
Thunderbolt
Shadow Ball
Focus Punch

Which set do you guys think is the most effective?

Syaoran November 27th, 2007 3:04 AM

I would say the first set. As for the exploding/focus punching Gengar, I think Substitute should be there - Gengar has the speed to pull it off, not to mention the unpredictability that might make your opponent's pokemon flee while you get a Substitute up (I would take out Explosion or Thunderbolt for it).

Dark Azelf November 27th, 2007 3:10 AM

I like the first one but i prefer Focus Sash on it, and so i can take a super effective hits from Weavile etc. and live to hypnosis it or Focus Blast it to pieces.

EDIT: Second ones more situational, ive tried it and im not really impressed with it, only really good for taking out walls, like Tyraniboah.

Thunderbolt is a must for Gengar. It's the only pokemon that will know an electrical move on my team. Explosion is there when you know Gengar isn’t going to last any longer so you explode for the maximum damage. I rather have focus punch without sub. I don't have room for sub so I either have focus punch in there without sub or either replace it with another move.

Yeah you have use that set against my weavile xD. I'll go for the first set. Taking out blissey with explosion isn't Gengar’s responsibility. I have other pokemon to take care of that.

"McIceGar" comes to mind.

Wait, gengar is toast against weavile anyways...am I missing something here?

Towlie November 27th, 2007 1:19 PM

1st Set with Choice Specs > Life Orb. Specs Focus Blast does about 44% to a standard blissey which is always nice.

LOL nah he used Night Slash or Pursuit, i forgot but i hung on with focus sash and Hypnotized it and proceeded to Focus Blast it.

@Towlie: Yeah i love Choice Specs aswell a 2/3hkno on Blissey is fantastic, however sash is meant for a lead Gengar so it depends on what _Prince_ wants if for really.

Anti November 27th, 2007 1:47 PM

Ah...but weavile really does kind of own gengar, even moreso starmie ;) But without sash...;)

luke November 27th, 2007 1:54 PM

Yes, for the most part, Gengar has no business staying in against a Weavile. I much prefer the first one. The Second Set is too "gimmick"-y for my tastes.

Sora_8920 November 27th, 2007 3:15 PM

I would actually run Wide Lesn and Thunder over thunderbolt for the first set. ;)

Azonic November 27th, 2007 4:55 PM

Wide Lens probably would help the most on the first set, it helps Focus Blast, Hypnosis, and the possible Thunder. Though Choice Specsing it works just as well.

Choice Specs with Hypnosis probably wouldn't be a good idea, though. ;)

Um, its accuracy is still rather low and one miss = cya gengar. If anything, give it sash. Having THAT many moves with poor accuracy is like giving starmie blizzard, hydro pump, and thunder ;/

Gengar @ Leftovers
EVs: 108 hp / 216 spd / 184 Satk
timid
- hypnosis
- ice punch
- thunderbolt
- will-o-wisp

_Prince_ November 27th, 2007 10:27 PM

I was breeding Gastly's last night. I came across one with HP Ice power 60. That's too low, right?

No HP Evs on gengars since it is not meant to take hits and won't last long.Leftovers won't help either.
And if your going to give him physical moves like ice punch(its not 3rd gen. right?)give him a naive nature or the other one that is +speed, -defense(hasty right?)You don't want to reduce its attack with a physical move on it.
And I don't think Will-o-Wisp works on it either. It just dosn't work on it(Me thinks)

[email protected] sash/life orb/choice specs
Ability:Levitate
Nature:Timid
EVs:252 Speed, 252 Sp.Attack, 4 HP
-Hypnosis/HP Ice
-Thunderbolt
-Shadow Ball
-Focus Blast

Common move set.....

And about your HP ice 60....yeah shoot for a higher one.

Dark Azelf November 28th, 2007 2:59 AM

I think 60 is high enough, generally i say if its 50 and above use it. Saying that my Gengar does indeed have hidden power Ice but it has lol power , 46 XD

Ársa November 28th, 2007 3:15 AM

Hmmmm, yes, but after losing a battle because my Yanmega's HP Ice (63) left my opponenet with 1HP, I have since then aimed for at least HP 67. (Yanmega now has HP Ice 70)

Anti November 28th, 2007 9:37 AM

Um, HP Ice 60 is just fine "ThePlaya." And if you're that scared of leaving opponents with 1 HP, run some calcs ;)

n3croart November 28th, 2007 11:44 AM

oh ok. I guess im just not getting it. I don't know much about 4th generation if thats what the thread starter wanted. (looking at life orb) my bad .

Sora_8920 November 28th, 2007 12:15 PM

Well, if you're not good at 4th Gen, then don't reply at all. Simple as that.

I don't think he realized it was 4th gen :/

Sora_8920 November 28th, 2007 12:35 PM

Ah. But he said he idn't know much about 4th Gen, which is why I replied that. ;)

huh? ice punch? what?

The first set you have is good as it is

Azonic November 28th, 2007 4:06 PM

Ice Punch on Gengar was only in 3rd Generation. Now that Ice Punch is physical, its pretty useless on Gengar. Hidden Power [ICE] is the replacement for it.

Weavile says hi bye to gengar.

It only owns with that set in 3rd gen ;) It can still mock boltbeam though, as others have mentioned. I like Destiny bond on gengar. I've destroyed many ice beaming bluisseys with that, and late game swept with encoreZam and Raikou.

Houndoom666 November 29th, 2007 4:23 PM
