I think everyone has a sentimental attachment to their first Pokémon game (Blue for me) or perhaps the first one that they put time into and completed, but from the RBY generation I must admit that Yellow is the best game due to the additional features (notably a Pikachu in tow!)

However the "best classic game" has to go to Gold (or perhaps Silver because of Lugia). They remain the best Pokémon games and two of the best games I've ever played.

Crystal is also excellent but I wasnt much of a fan of the Eusine plot or Unown messages having already played Gold. If the mobile phone system was implemented outside of Japan then Crystal would have been amazing.

Gold and Silver have great characters, mind-blowing ideas, a good story, flawless gameplay, excellent map design, and after all that you get to revisit the Kanto region that you know and love.

Incredible.

I do believe Gold, but more so Silver were the best classic games. The only major downside to them, that i can think of, is not being able to legitmately get Celebi on your game without using a cheat cartridge. (not quite sure about Events that included it.) Its similar to Mew in RBY, but at least there was an 'ingame' glitch that alowed you to get him...

That's true actually, being able to catch Celebi in Gold/Silver would have been nice. Despite the glitch providing "legitimate" Mew ownership in RBY I think that attending the Nintendo event (and indeed pleading with your parents until they agreed to take you to one) was all part of the fun from that generation. I don't think the glitch was publicised until way after that time anyway. As a boy I loved the way that Nintendo Official Magazine hyped up the Mew events in the UK.

Yellow was my first, so I suppose that has to be my favorite. I somehow lost it, though. :< All I have now is Blue, which is great, but... it's no Yellow XD

Red!

Red version...my first pokemon game

Spiron March 1st, 2008 10:45 PM

As previously said, I was attatched to my Red and Yellow versions. However, im my honest opinion, Gold was the best classic game. Upon playing Gold, there was no turning back. It had a brilliant storyline that totally out-done the 1st generation games.

Gold was the first Pokemon game I ever played, so that has a special place in my heart and it's definitely my favorite. Yellow is amazing, as well. Nothing beats having a cute little Pikachu follow you everywhere ^^

BeachBoy March 1st, 2008 11:09 PM

Ill agree with yumi on this one, gold was pretty instant classic, I really loved blue, my first game and have the majestic feel and all...

But gold had something that I cant really say, not sure, but yeah my favorite and best classic game ;D

Blargtastic808 March 1st, 2008 11:27 PM

Same. Blue was my first, where I learned about the wonder and win that is Pokemon. Started with Bulbasaur who became one of my very favorite pokemon. But Gold, now that was a game. Going back to revisit the Kanto region really just made the GSC series one of the best generations of Pokemon games.

I would love to see Gamefreak and Nintendo to remake the GSC series like how they did FR and LG. If they did that I think it would bring back the fans of the classic games for sure.

For me it was Yellow, its graphics were way to cool for the 1995 i think? well anyway i loved the blastoise graphic

sure man, i mean i they ever get to make other pkmn game (of course they will, but their running out of elements and rocks to base their names on) it would be excellent to meet all the 4 regions again in a single game

neonlights March 3rd, 2008 11:45 AM

Blueeee!!
It just has to be. I loved that game the first time i played on it.

ShadowofTime01 March 3rd, 2008 11:59 AM

Mine was definitely Blue, and then Yellow, and Silver.

Best non-pokemon game of the Gameboy generation: Solar Striker. Followed by Double Dragon and Castlevania. But i assume this is just the best classic pokemon game thread.

JacobGRocks March 3rd, 2008 12:24 PM

Pokemon Gold and Silver are the best. except when the battery dies

Lolz turtle March 4th, 2008 5:03 PM

red and silver. good times with red misty used to wipe the floor all over with me because i only used a pidgeotto and a a charmeleon, actually got to lvl 40 battling oddish and abras to no end, i was such a newbie.

but then again, it was fun and charizard kiled her starmie ^^

Hotaru March 13th, 2008 6:48 PM

This is a tough choice. D: But I'm going to go with Red, since it was my first Pokemon game. Yellow and Silver have special places in my heart too, for nostalgia's sake. :]

First Gen: Red
Second Gen: Crystal

starmii3 March 15th, 2008 2:47 AM

My first was yellow! I still sometimes play it today. It would be nice if it had all the pokemon that it didnt back then!

Philman March 15th, 2008 7:13 PM

the first game I ever played was a rent-GBC and Pokemon Yellow. It was amazingly addicting... this was around 1999.

then I got Red. But I'll have to say Red & Blue are the best out of the original batch. They're the originals. They also don't feel as "kiddish" as Yellow... but in general, Yellow IS a better version (color for GBC, better graphics, harder)

I actually disliked the fact that the game followed the TV series closely... for one thing... the games are the originals. Having that same game modified to fit something that was based off of THE GAME cheapens it severely.

bob_saget March 15th, 2008 8:15 PM

Mine is also Crystal, but it wasn't my 1st game.

(I'm playing it right now in between watching Ratatouille on my computer. (Which is a surprisingly good movie!))

Gold and Silver, For The Win!

TY_old March 21st, 2008 8:00 PM

Red,yellow, and sliver was the best for me and I play red sometimes since it was first one I got.

Kuri March 22nd, 2008 1:31 PM

Silver was the first pokemon game I ever owned and I spent 250+ hours on that thing.

I never owned the 1st generation games because my mom wouldn't buy me one. hahaha but I think that even if I did, silver would still be my top choice.

Ashay March 31st, 2008 7:12 AM

I grew up with Red, but my brother had yellow. When he lost interest in it I tried it and it was a bit more fun than Red. Mostly because of Pikachu :D

Classic-red April 2nd, 2008 11:39 AM

Gold was a great game, but i love pokemon red, i have 2 pokemon red cartridges ^^

Cartmic April 3rd, 2008 3:10 AM

Yellow was and still is my favorite.
