Art Discussion Thread

Because you're not allowed to post Discussion Threads in the main Art Gallery, this thread will take the place of those individual threads.

Please ask any questions or say any art related comments in this thread.

A hint as to what belongs here; If there is no art in the thread you're posting in the Art Gallery, that means that it should probably stay in this thread.

This is the old Art Discussion Thread, if you want to reference anything that was said in the old thread.

Which of these pictures is best (as far as colors)?
http://i211.photobucket.com/albums/bb312/uhlone/Kwpics.png
I thought the first pic was too saturated, so I took away saturation in the last two.

Forgiven February 19th, 2008 1:47 PM

the second one by far becouse the colour is just right the last one looks like his fake tan has gone very rong

Not that I know of.

Did anyone else here of the new bill that could make you lose all rights to your work?: http://mag.awn.com/index.php?ltype=Columns&column=MindBiz&article_no=3605

Toastypk April 29th, 2008 12:52 PM

That was proven to be an exaggeration, it only applies to dead artists or those who can't be found. It was blown out of proportion and a few deviantart journals clarified this.

Gunn May 1st, 2008 8:34 PM

Blown way out of proportion is more like it. I guess everyone was paranoid.

Uhhh, since my tablet broke, I've been searching for a new one (and maybe nice since I got it for 50 bucks, lawl), I came across this one in action: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oE2APo_EORQ

Wacoms are so lovely, but that one costs 2000 USDs. D:

Transparent Backgrounds

Can anyone tell me how to make the background on an image transparent? thanx in advance.

what program do you use???
i snuggest Photo shop

Anastasia.R August 21st, 2008 4:28 PM

Well, since it's a discussion thread ...

Would you rather make Digital drawings or Traditional drawings (like, by hand.)?

~A.R

Gunn August 23rd, 2008 3:05 PM

Traditional art. I try to pick up my tablet sometimes, but digital art gets too frustrating for me. And you can't really use digital art if you don't know how to use it. I prefer to use my markers and pencils any time.

Charizard EX September 15th, 2008 12:42 AM

Use Adobe Photoshop to make images transparent. Just grab the Paintbucket and select white and Voila! Remember, It won't work well on Images that are already too white like that common Nintendo Wii picture.

Draw a very rough light line to fix it. Anyway, What do you think of my drawings:

Would you rather make Digital drawings or Traditional drawings (like, by hand.)?

Guess it's time for me to answer my own question. xD

Well, my answer is Traditional because I've been drawing by hand for 8-9 years now. Digital are is cool, too, but I've been making art on my computer for maybe 1-2 years. =\ And I'm not great at it. ^^;

Who wants to make another topic, now? =D

Some Pokemon Trainer Avatars?

I was wondering where I could find some Pokemon Trainer avatars that are at a reasonable size. Not just Ash but a wide variety of trainers like Gym Leaders and people! Where can I find these sorts of avatars/pictures?

Melodyfree October 1st, 2008 9:21 AM

By avatars, do you mean sprites? If so, you can find them here.
(You can find Pokemon sprites as well)
Otherwise, I really can't help you.

Kazukii October 1st, 2008 9:22 AM

Yes, thank-you ;)

Anastasia.R October 11th, 2008 9:38 AM

Who (or what) inspired you make art (Graphic art, sprite/pixel art, ect)?

I'll answer sooner or later. ;O

I'm not quite sure if this goes here, but I have a question.

Should I keep my current avatar or should I change it to feature my anime-self (in other words, which do you think looks better)?

I like the anime of yourself, but if you're going to use that, why not make a backround, too? :D

Any idea what sort of background it could be? I'm wanting it to appear less like a floating head as possible. Maybe a background that fuses with the head? Or perhaps I should draw the body first.

StrickeN October 23rd, 2008 10:11 PM

Just made them today.

What do you guys think of my avatar/siggy?

Papa_Squat October 23rd, 2008 11:04 PM

Since tablets were being discussed earlier, I figured that this was the right place to ask this question.

For those of you who are into traditional art, do you find a tablet to be similar? I love drawing and sketching and stuff so I was considering buying a tablet so that I could just draw straight onto the computer, but I'm concerned about whether it will be the same. Do you guys who have tablets use them a lot? Is it as easy as using a pencil?

Charizard EX October 29th, 2008 4:32 AM

I need URGENT help. See my locked topic "Ideas..." My school has a poster making competition and my drawing is really good. And all of the kids forced me too, to participate in it. Then I heard about the prize, That's 6000 RS. or you can say 100$.

So, I accepted. The topic is global warming. There is another one too, I've to draw them both.
So I want really GREAT ideas what should my picture look like.

You can draw it roughly, so that I can redraw it............... If you want to. If you can draw the neat one, it would be HUGELY APPRECIATED.
thanks.

What you could do is like a soda can, with a picture of the earth on it, drifting on waves, and maybe draw seagulls overhead.

EDIT: Added v4.

Let me do my little say, 'kay? :3 Since you're asking on oppions on the eyes, I'll do that right away:
V1: Not the best, imo. =/ His eyes aren't balanced. The lines that connec the similar points in both eyes are not parallel. The right (for the picture) eye is to high.

V2:Same as ^, the right eye is still too big compared to the left eye, even regarding the angle you drew it in.

V3 and V4... Sorry to say, but can you hint me on the difference? =/

About the rest of your drawing:
I don't know the Shuro Chara anime, so all I keep thinking about is Meowth. XD
I like the way you shade, it's really smooth. I am learning to gradient shade, but it's not working too well. XD It's still a little cell-shaded.
Maybe, if it's not too much work, you could try to move his mouth more towards the left side? Somehow his face seems a little unbalanced. =/ I don't know for shure though.

Oh, and just a little question... :-/ Why don't you try giving your transformed anime-self 4 fingers? :O I've noticed the shape of the fingers in this picture is really well done. :O

Well, I don't suggest posting it HERE. If you mean make an art gallery here, in the Art Gallery board, why not? It kinda depends what kind of are you're posting. (Banners/photos/graphic art go to the Graphic art boards, Sprite/pixel art is .. uh .. Pixel art board, and drawings/digital drawings go to the Art Gallery board.)

The difference between V3 and V4 is the coloring of the inside of the cat ears and the shading in the mouth.
V1, V2, and V3 had brown as the inside color of the ears and didn't have very good shading in the mouth.

Yeah, If you didn't know about the Maneki Neko, the thing that Meowth was created from, it would be easy to associate other things based on it to Meowth.

Thanks, I'm glad you like the shading. However, I wish I could cell shade...

I'll try to shift over the mouth sometime while I'm home this weekend. I'm using my laptop here, but I have the full-size Maneki pic on my computer at home.

Why don't I try giving him 4 fingers, or did you mean 5? I know in the Nekoban Ryo pic he appears to have 4 fingers, but he has 5. You just can't see the pinky fingers. I'm glad you like the fingers.

Thanks for commenting!

Ah, now I see it. Thanks for telling. You said look to the eyes, so I ignored the rest. XD

A good thing to learn cell-shading is redrawing animepictures, most likely anime screenshots or anime-art related stuff. Manga-related drawings (like artwork for covers/posters made by the manga-ka) usually have little cell-shading in them. They mostly use some kind of gradient colour (markers, aquarel or other paint), so it's sometimes hard to draw the line between shade, light and highlight.
IMO, screenshots work best.

Well, 4 large fingers and a thumb. |D
Ah, I see. It was confusing me a little. 'Cause when a human grabs something, like stick or a sword, he usually uses all of his fingers. It gives more grip and will alow to put greater force behind the "whack". And it gives less opportunities to break ones' fingers. :B

Anyway I would love it if someone was to draw a picture of a rock band consisting of pokemon :D
I know there was that anime episode on that boat buuuut ... wouldnt it better if you had some kind of really charismatic Jigglypuff or Loudred on vocals, with some long hair like Ozzy Osbourne xD
And I thought that the best pokemon to go on the drums would be Machamp :D Four arms and strong :D
Sneasel on bass. He could produce a blistering bass solo as he's so quick. And the strings are thicker than that on a guitar so he less likely to snap them with his claws xD
I couldnt think of anyone on rythym or lead guitar any ideas? :D

It's a little bit flat, if you ask me. The lines are great, but could use some work. You could delete some pixels so the line becomes more smooth.
I also suggest you use 3 shades for colouring: Highlight, normal and shade. Most spriting is done that way.
But as for other stuff, it's quite nice. I like the concept of the Pokémon ^^

machinegun777 June 9th, 2009 9:23 AM

I've got a question, how do you add text to an animated image?

Kotowari June 16th, 2009 2:10 PM

It's actually quite easy to do that. But, you need Imagesready for that (or any other program that can animate?).

If you have imagesready, open the .GIF file. It will open and every frame will be shown as a separate layer. Now ad a new layer, or use the text tool to add whatever you want.
When you feel pleased with the text, make sure you have the first frame of the animation selected (in the animation window) and put the text/newlayer wherever you want it. It will then most likely automatically change in all layers. :3 If not, alter it in all layers.
Click "save optimised as" and save it as a .GIF.

Oh gawd, I'm so bad at explaining. |D

The angle and perspective really make it interesting, and are well done. The composition is just great. You're very good with that. Plus, even though you said the colors were messed up, I can still picture how they might've been. The shading's simple, but very nice and clean. :3

I'm not entirely sure what the background is, though. are they on a rock pillar thing high above a forest? Is it a rock in the middle of a river of green goop? Are they just on the ground, with green stuff closing in on them? It's hard to tell what it is.

If it really was a rock reaching out for the heavens, you'd at least see they shadows of the monolith on the trees... Even when the sun was high above, you'd at least see something I know that with the angle you used, giving perspective to a background isn't easy. You did a good job, but it all seems.. flat.

Charizard's left claw seems a little off as well... but that's a little detail. :3
Keep up the good work. =D

I usually draw with pencil and leave it black and white, but I'm going to start to color my pictures in now. Do I shade with pencil first then just lightly color the picture or do I color in the picture and shade it with that color?

{Swan} August 10th, 2009 9:43 PM

I always shade with colour, never with a normal pencil.

Just a few tips, leave some areas white that have a lot of colour. this mostly goes for light colours, skin and definitely for hair.

Also another tip. The way I shade is I lay in the base colour, and use the same pencil to draw in the basic shading. Then I take a pencil with a darker colour and shade the darkest areas.

ASCII Art

Just wondering if there is a place for ASCII art anywhere on PC?

I see "community contributed" projects aren't allowed, so I don't know where a thread would go for posting ASCII art for comments, critique and/or free use in signatures. It would be nice if everyone's ASCII art could be viewed in one place, as people don't often have personal galleries for such things.

I agree with you. Digital art frustrates me a lot more. I'd rather pour my heart and soul out through a pencil and a piece of paper.

Digital never saves for me and always crashes </3 i cry.

i totally agree with using a good old pen and paper! ¦¬D traditional all the way!

Kotowari January 20th, 2010 1:55 PM

I like both. :0 Really, I do. And ever since I got my tablet (August) I love digital art even more, yet it will always be on par with traditional art.
Both mediums have their strong points, and things I dislike. Digital Art for example just takes so long, with tradition art mistakes are just so hard to erase once things are no longer in pencil. That's much easier in digital art. And then there are some things here and there I could comment on. >_>

Oh, btw, I would like some c&c. : D Since I really want to get better at art. 2010 will be my year of PEA's (Pose (movement, 'k?), Emotion, Anatomy). But constructive comments have been a little rare at my dA account lately... >.o

Thanks in advance, though. : D

He, I prefer the one in Pokemon Special Adventures xD

Like the first one. Machoke is JACKED! hehehe.

icycatelf February 12th, 2010 2:23 PM

I don't know if this is the right place to ask or not. I don't even know if this is possible. However, in hopes of finding a solution, I would like to ask a question.

Let's say I have a white shirt with dark teal stripes. How would I go about making those teal stripes turn dark or medium blue without using any dyes, inks, or paints that would not discolor the white stripes? If I wash it a certain way, will it fade into blue?

Trent_Jayir March 10th, 2010 4:58 AM

I don't think theres a way to make the stripes a darker color than they already are without dye/paints, but There must be a chemical you can use to strip the turquoise down to just blue... but it would only be as a dark a blue as the turquoise is now.

Might just be better to buy a new shirt with darker stripes xD;

.Gamer March 11th, 2010 1:42 PM

So, I'm not artsy at all, I just fool around on GIMP and such cause its kinda fun. But I was wondering if anyone owns and/or uses a tablet for drawing? I kinda wanted to buy one, but I wanted to get advice as to which one is the best value and what ones are easiest to use, etc. etc.

Please and thank you,

-Gamer.

Late March 11th, 2010 9:45 PM

First things first, so I want some comments for my drawings, no one wants to say anything.
Can someone say something for all of the pictures? You can say just from one but it would be nice to say something else too.
Here's the link: http://www.pokecommunity.com/showthread.php?t=209442

And second thing for .Gamer: I use tablet for drawing, it's Wacom Bamboo tablet (A5) about 80e.
Don't know about other tablets, but I just had to install the program to my PC, follow the instructions and plug tablet to my computer's USB place.

.Gamer March 12th, 2010 7:09 AM

Thanks. The one I was looking at was a Wacom tablet. I have one last question (hopefully), do tablets work with GIMP or do I have to buy Photoshop of some kind?

Late March 12th, 2010 7:22 AM

Yes, it works with GIMP. Tested it few days ago, I don't need it as I have Photoshop.
It works fine with everything, it can be used as a mouse, you can play games with it (or you can just draw with it). Some drawing programs didn't support all of the pen abilitys but as you use GIMP you have nothing to worry about (not sure).

Kotowari March 20th, 2010 5:33 AM

I have a Wacom Intuos3 A4 Tablet, and I haven't got any complaints about it. Not it the slightest, I love my tablet.

It works with everything, you don't need a special drawing program to use it.

Izanagi April 6th, 2010 7:01 AM

Requesting artist who is willing to form partnership to create comic.

Spriters, Paint drawers, pen drawers, it doesn't matter. You just need to be able to draw, preferabbly know how to color, and have a scanner. I would be writing the comic. Please post a sample of your work.

StarryLatiasGirl April 6th, 2010 8:43 AM

I would like to, but... unless I'm getting paid, I really can't afford to take that time out of my schedule. xD

Kobold Asylum April 8th, 2010 9:42 AM

I used to be able to sprite but I lost my GIMP when I reinstalled Windows.

Gulpin April 9th, 2010 4:24 PM

I'm considering buying a Wacom tablet to improve my digital art. I want to buy this (http://www.wacom.com/bamboo/bamboo_pen.php) one because it looks fairly simple, and it is cheap compared to the others. I know it isn't the best, but does anyone with experience of Wacom tablets or tablets in general know if this is okay to start out with? Really, I just want something cheap that still works.

shookie April 9th, 2010 4:44 PM

The Bamboo is the new "beginner" tablet, which is easy to tell because it's cheap and doesn't have a lot of bells and whistles. So, if it's your first tablet, then yes, it's the best one to start out with.

Just keep in mind that, even though it seems like it'll be really easy to get used to, it does take some practice. It also won't automatically make you a better graphic artist, and there are plenty of people who create amazing work with a mouse or even the touchpad of their laptop.

Pandamore April 9th, 2010 4:49 PM

I used a Bamboo myself, and sisn't find anything wrong with it. The fancy shmancy extras the expensives ones come with are only options, real artists can use the simplest of tools to create something beautiful =D

Silver April 10th, 2010 1:02 PM

I too have a bamboo, and it serves it's purpose. Eventually I'd like to have a cintiq (I'm talking way way future, when I'm out of college) because hopefully by then I'll have my major in architecture and my minor in graphic design.

Anyways, I was wondering if I could get any feedback on my sig/avatar I just made, it's simple I know, but I'm just getting back into the swing of things. And yes the text feels weird, but I haven't gotten around to trying to fix that. =/

pokemongarnet April 20th, 2010 5:01 AM

Can anyone help me with GIMP. I can't decompress the files correctly, it always comes installed as Bz2. I have windows, if that changes the matter at all.

Telekinesis July 11th, 2010 12:11 PM

Lol, I know my avi and sig both suck, but could I please get a rating? I sorta just threw them together.
