I guess we can discuss wtf moments here? It is a discussion thread and I'm sure it happens a lot among graphic artists.

Anyways, a few moments ago I was perfecting the lineart for a Tropius drawing and in less than a second I watched boxes pop up and GIMP shut itself down, and I was just about to save and hadn't saved it earlier. Life sucks.. This happened earlier to me too I was making a dewgong drawing and I had just finished and saved and I try to open it up to show to people and the file had deleted itself. (It is still saved however if I click on it it says that no picture is in the file.)

So has anyone else had moments like this?

Also, could someone rate the Chingling in my signature? I drew it earlier today.

GFA July 19th, 2010 8:01 PM

I cant get GIMP to run on my computer, you lucky ... You ... Person

I have a WTF every-time I save something as the wrong type of file ... The colours get all smeared, and everything looks like crap. This happens surprisingly frequently

I only have bad memories of GIMP shutting down every time I made a banner. I can't draw with GIMP with my tablet. If I try, it freezes. =x I don't mind, since, I don't like Gimp for drawing anyway. xD

Hmm, the drawing is cute.
The outlines are kinda think and looks am little messy. =[ I like the shading could use more of a curve shape, since Chingling is round. ^..^;; I give it a 7.5/10.

Thanks for the critique! I do agree about everything actually. I wanted to use thicker lines than most Pokemon art, just to see how it went and I do think that I should go back and make them smoother. Also, I'm not too good with shading and I love when people give me tips and such, so next time I open it up, I'll see if I can edit it.

Anyone has an Idea to attract activities to the main Art Gallery Forum?

It's pretty much dead...

I have an idea.

PC's Art Pokedex Project idea

Well, I've seen a Pokedex project before, but it was used for Graphics. I think, if we make a Pokedex project for the Art gallery, it could bring activity to the section. I mean, I'm pretty sure people are bored of posting galleries. Plus, if you're having an artist block lately, this project can keep you occupied. The Pokedex has over 400 Pokemon, I think it's be cool to see many pokemon drawn in many different styles here. I think it'd be fun. =] How it'd be set up? Well, I'm thinking about artists making pictures, one by one Pokemon, or draw a picture of the Pokemon (and if it has stages) and it's evolutions stages or forms.

It's a big project that could use lots of artists to join! 8D What do you guys think about my idea?

It'd be fun to do this :D We could open up maybe three threads a week for three different evolutionary lines (like the first week would be threads for Bulbasaur line, Charmander line, and Squirtle line) and whoever wanted to could post any or all of the Pokemon in that line, and there could be a winner for each Pokemon that will be posted in a stickeyed thread.

I'm averse to this mainly because of the ridiculous problems we've had in the past with collaborations like this.
If you'll notice, there is a rule against these without explicit permission, so unless someone who's gonna be sure to run this thing without any hitch that'll get people complaining and whining like they all used to whenever we did pokedexes, I think this would be a grand idea.

But unless someone knows what they're doing, this idea could be risky, imo. :/

dead-man-walking July 25th, 2010 9:30 PM

Yeah, I think that's great. But really? Permission? How and to who must we ask? Art Gallery don't hav a mod now. D:

I asked Hiroshi Sotomura if I could have permission. I just need to make some rules for the project, and he'll approve it or not.

Thanks! That's be awesome! ='D
And the idea will be up soon! I got my PM awhile saying that I had enough rules, and that it was fine to post without asking. xDD;

So, be ready! =]

Trent_Jayir August 2nd, 2010 11:28 AM

Right-o, Cap'n!
*salutes*

Anastasia.R August 8th, 2010 9:32 AM

Alrighty, the Pokdex project WILL start next week. Why? I gotta go to Florida for a bit, sorry guys. ^..^; I have the rules set up, and the lists of Pokemon. I hope you understand, and can wait for another week. I would post it now, but then, editing would take a long time, people might have questions, ect ect. ^..^;

WonderGirl August 9th, 2010 1:47 AM

Hey everyone. I heard that dA made a new program similar to Photoshop to develop graphics. Their announcement is on their site (not sure if I'm allowed to post it but for now I won't).

What do you guys think about it? Has anybody tried it yet?

Eternal Nightmare August 17th, 2010 9:12 PM

Haha count me in on that Pokedex project miss Anastasia.R.

Ok guys I'm like seriously blocked right now and we all now how much artistic block sucks ><. I wanna do a group picture using my main characters of my manga as usual but I'm fresh out of ideas for a good group picture. So here I am asking my creative brethren and sisters for any good ideas for this picture. I greatly appreciate it :3

Anastasia.R August 19th, 2010 8:46 PM

@Eternal Nightmare - 8D Yay! Glad to see you wanna join in the fun. ^..^

Tune in Friday and this weekend! - I'll be posting the Pokdex project. Hehe, it's gonna take that time span, since I forgot to pack. XD Plus, I have to babysit. -3-; But, yes, expect it this weekend. The earliest time WOULD be Friday, but I probably won't be done and ready to post that soon. xDD;

Loki August 23rd, 2010 3:19 PM

What do you guys think about an art contest?

Of course, that question is really vague and doesn't take into account that we have to talk about loads of things like traditional medias vs. digital medias, experienced artists vs. less experienced, etc, but just throwing that out there, since Competitions has always been dominated by Graphics & Photography, and it's been a long standing issue to inject some of the other art sections in there. .-.

We finally got pixels, but what about the actual art gallery?

Eternal Nightmare August 23rd, 2010 3:54 PM

An art competition sounds fun maybe because I'm competitive xD. I'm not confident in my skills enough to say I will place though.

Shadow-Star August 23rd, 2010 4:14 PM

Ya a contest would be great, but as Eternal Nightmare i too am not sure i would place either xD

Eternal Nightmare August 23rd, 2010 4:23 PM

Richi says we should believe in ourselves. It should be fun so tats not going to stop me from entering as some excitement needs to be going on around this part of the forum. So I have the contest, hopefully, and Anastasia's pokedex project to look forward too :D

I second, third, and fourth this. G&P has always seemed to dominate (the one visual art category of PC that isn't stuff I'm into doing), and finally I can do pixel challenges again, which I love, but my real main forte is general art. Duking it out with the greats in another area I have some viable skill in sounds awesome!

I think contests would breathe the much-needed life into this main area as pixel art challenges seem to do to theirs. There are plenty of awesome regular artists here that may not do pixels or G&P, so a contest would give them a better chance to strut their stuff than doomed gallery threads. Surely it could entice talented people that don't even post their art at all to compete and get exposure, spark rivalries, shed more light on the presence of regular art in general, and of course have fun!

dead-man-walking August 24th, 2010 12:11 AM

An art contest would be awesome. But I think it will only work well if "Style" isn't included in judging OR the judges have an equal view on all kind of art styles.

Jus' sayin' :P

Plus, we don't have a mod to confirm and accept them. D:

True about the style parts. Or, maybe, instead of just one judge, maybe we can have 2 or 3. =P I really like the idea of an art contest, but, are we going to make it weekly, monthly...? Well, I guess that's not so important to know yet. ^..^;

We need to ask the S-Mods and higher staff members while there's no art mod in this section. Ugh, I wish we had a mod around the Art Gallery. Maybe we could get our ideas approved to be made quicker. Well, at least we can ask for help and approval to the higher staff members.

Loki August 29th, 2010 2:27 PM

I think having two or three judges is fine, but the problem therein lies that we'd have to pick people with different styles.
Forgive me if I just haven't been scourging other galleries enough, but the variations in styles does not seem to be a particularly prevalent trait of the Pokecommunity Art Gallery. .-.

Regardless, I think since our number of entries will be rather low, giving a one-line comment or however much a judge wants to say about a piece would be very helpful, especially if we're not letting average joe members vote and post as to why they voted as such.

I hope I'm making sense, because I don't feel like I am. .-.

Also, because of the sheer nature of the Art Gallery atm, I think it should be monthly. .-.

Amaruuk September 3rd, 2010 5:50 AM

I agree with all that, but though I do see plenty of style variation (as in most of our seasoned artists definitely have a distinct style they've developed), it's not radical enough to where I think it'd really affect judging IMO.

Monthly sounds good here, plus I think the kind of pieces that would be done for the contests would take longer to do than tags or pixel art. I know I take way longer to paint than to pixel.

Trent_Jayir September 14th, 2010 10:23 AM

I'm with Kina 100% on this, if it's a contest for this area, we only need to specialize on people who understand the usual for this area, right? I'm sure If something unusual was sumbitted, we could work with it, it's not like people here are narrow-minded or anything... At least, I don't find you guys that way. ^^;
All I'm trying to say is; It might be best to just go for it and iron out the issues as they come as opposed to trying to sort out issues we don't have yet?

So, we'd be looking at a monthly contest with two or three judges who provide some sort of score and reasons why they gave that score.
I think this sounds really good. I hope we can pull it off! :')

aquadan September 30th, 2010 6:40 PM

Digital Camera or Scanner

What do you prefer for capturing your art into digital files.

ManhattanTheStarr September 30th, 2010 6:43 PM

*sigh* Just a scanner.
Wish I could do digital art... Dx

Stellar September 30th, 2010 7:35 PM

Not quite sure if this thread should be here, but...
A scanner is always the best choice IMO, it's just a matter of having a decent one. Even if you work on a larger scale, having access to a large format scanner is best. Digital cameras are built for photography with little else in mind.

Art Zine

Hey So I'm currently working on an art zine.
the Concept is a A5-sized 10pg book, It will contain some of my art (possibly cropped or zoomed in), maybe some little sketches and possibly a small b/w comic.

Two questions;
1) what do you think of my idea?
2) where is a good place to see my book (online wise)

moments. November 27th, 2010 10:08 PM

I think it's a brilliant idea, although it might work better as a journal which you keep updating rather than limiting it to 10 pages. That is, unless you have a specific theme / challenge in mind that you want to fit 10 pages, like say you want to make one piece of art a day for 10 days, then that would work. But I see no other reason for strictly limiting an "art-zine", especially considering 10 pages really isn't that much, and A5 paper is pretty small...

As for the other question, I don't really understand. If you mean like where can you upload it, there are many places, but if you mean like to showcase it specifically then you could look into a blog type thing. I use tumblr for my art journal and update whenever I make something, but you could upload the 10 pages and then leave it.

Anastasia.R December 3rd, 2010 5:03 PM

Alrighty, I have some ideas for some more activity for the Art Gallery. Why don't I post it instead of asking the members here? Well, that's wouldn't make all that sense. I wanted to discuss ideas I had in mind that maybe you guys would like to have or not? Maybe you have some ideas of your own? Post an idea, possibly?

Pokemon Dex Project - Up and any artist can join in for the fun.

A Monthly Contest? - I think Loki suggested some sort of art contest, already, but I think we need a few more comments on this. I suggest for the Art contest to be a Monthly thing. Not everyone takes a few days to make a drawing. I think it would be helpful and have more time to those who don't draw as quickly as other people. Judges? Well, I can judge, but I think we'll need two more. Maybe someone who has more experience with looking at different art styles? Or maybe someone with more judging experience?

Contests with Oekaki? - That's a lot more dead than the Art Gallery, I have to say. Maybe we should have contests ONLY using the PC Oekaki? Give it some activity? We could revive two things at once, possibly. Plus, for those artists who don't want to download a program, all you do is sign up for the PC Oekaki and it's free. Quick and easy.

I thought of having a duel or battle thing that they have for Pixel art, but I don't think that could work out. Maybe that's me, but I don't think it's quick and fast to draw or digital paint something as fast as it is to make pixel art or sprites. That's kind of the same for graphic arts as well. Icons and banners are a lot faster to make than it is for some people to make drawings. However, you guys might have a better idea than me.

Project Ideas?

Holiday Projects? - I remember a project I took part in, the only thing is that it was pixel art, but it was a big thread where you posted pixel or sprite art relating to the Holiday. Then on Easter, it was a big Sprite/Pixel Pokemon Egg project. Very fun, maybe we could do it.

So, what do you think? Have better suggestions? Have comments on the ideas? Lets see how things go and maybe we'll have more fun things to do here! =]

Gulpin December 15th, 2010 6:22 PM

I have a question about tablet's, and which ones are better. The reason I am asking is because I found two different Wacom tablets on sale for the same prica and I can't decide which is better. I have an idea, but I want to get the opinion of other artists here. So here they are:
Bamboo Fun
Intuos4 - Small
I know that the latter is professional, but I'm also interested in programs that come with these and overall use. My main problem is size that is making me have trouble deciding.

Miz en Scène December 17th, 2010 6:47 PM

Wheeee... jumping into the PC's visual arts section for no reason!

I actually think that this would be a good idea, considering the amount of activity this particular forum gets in contrast with its various child forums. As for judges, I think a person with art experience over judging experience would be wisest because, hell, Simon Cowell might have tons of experience judging American Idol and The X Factor, but I sure as hell am not going to trust him to judge a writing contest. But yeah, a monthly contests sounds good, and this forum needs a bit more activity anyways because its always overshadowed by its child forums. Also, I'd volunteer to be a judge for a monthly art contest if that's all right with you.

This may be me playing on my own strengths, but maybe an art critique-a-thon or something. Looking at the rules of the forum then at the various "art reviews" posted on the forum, most of them just tell the artist nice things and a few scattered comments about how to improve. To those who go in-depth about the pieces, kudos to you, but I'm not really seeing it that often around here. Granted, I haven't been around this forum apart from two critiques that I've done so far, but still...

And umm yeah, that's about it.

Cobalt'Scizor December 30th, 2010 4:03 AM

I'm not sure if this is the right place to ask this, but I can't find somewhere else that is suitable.

Yesterday, I posted a gallery in the Graphics & Photography section, and I can't find it. I'm guessing it's been deleted or moved or it might need approval but I'm not sure. Could someone please tell me:

1) If it's been deleted, why, so I can make a proper gallery
2) If it's been moved, where, so I can see it
3) If it needed to be approved, how long could it take.

Thank you.

Miz en Scène December 30th, 2010 4:45 AM

I'm not a mod or anything but... >_>

After searching through your last-created threads, I don't see any that would fit the description you're giving. As in ones that were posted 'yesterday' and in the 'photography section'. As far as I know, the G&P forum doesn't have any actual rules that says your thread needs to be approved, only that you need to have at least four examples posted to get to keep the thread open.

That said, since you said that you posted it yesterday and are only realising it now, I'm guessing that you posted it in a hurry and somehow made a mistake like closing your browser window too fast, or not actually clicking the button before closing the browser window. I'm basing this purely on the fact that you were late in recognizing the problem because if your thread were locked it would still show. Also, PC doesn't delete threads unless they contain illicit material.

Cobalt'Scizor December 30th, 2010 8:23 AM

Thank you for telling me, it was probably that I closed the tab too soon, I'll make it again. :)

I hope I'm not too late to answer, I have a bit to say on this matter ^^

My tablet is old: it's an intuos3 6x8. I've had it for more than 3 years and it hasn't failed me yet. I recommend the intuos line if you want something that's really long lasting and durable.

I've had friends buy the bamboo fun tablet and they claim that it also works pretty well. But I've noticed that there is a difference in the sensitivity levels, meaning that the lines didn't register the pressure as well (this could vary from person to person, but a lot of people are saying that for painting and drawing, intuos is the way to go).

Now, to answer your concerns about:

Size - In my experience, the tablet size really doesn't matter. In fact, I think that my tablet is too big. This of course varies from person to person, and many prefer larger tablets. The bamboo is significantly bigger for a cheaper price.

Programs - If you don't have any programs at all, and this is your first tablet, I recommend the Bamboo. I'll say this though: I'm not too fond of either of the programs listed since I've already been accustomed to the full versions of them (Mainly Photoshop CS3). But one of the best deals for a drawing program I've seen is "Paint tool SAI" (If you google it, it should be the second one on the SYSTEMAX website). It's about $63 and is excellent at painting and lineart (even more so than PS in some aspects).

Bottom line:

If this is your first tablet and you're trying to get a feel for it, go with the Bamboo. It's a lot cheaper and it comes with some software to get you started.

If you're really serious about art and you want something to last a long time and you're willing to cough up a few extra bucks, go with the intuos. The size doesn't really matter and it's great for painting/lineart.

Thank you so much for answering! I've already gotten the intous4 Small and I'm loving it, and this just reinforces my decision. Also, this is not my first tablet but is replacing by Bamboo Pen, so at first all I was looking for was a size upgrade but instead got a little bigger plus a lot better :D

CommanderPigg January 9th, 2011 6:05 PM

Oh! Ah, I knew I was too late XD But glad I could reinforce your decision!

Loki February 13th, 2011 9:29 PM

Hmm, a bit random, but does anyone have any suggestions when it comes to drawing group pictures? Like, five to six full bodies standing in one picture?

I've always found proportioning multiple people in one picture is difficult for me....

Logiedan February 13th, 2011 9:32 PM

would it be helpful to draw people seperately and have layers or so? Something like that.

Loki February 13th, 2011 9:42 PM

I was thinking drawing people separately would be good, but I feel like it might look a little inconsistent...? My style changes all the time- I have very poor consistency, so.....

Skip Class February 20th, 2011 11:59 PM

So I just started PaintTool Sai.
This was the first thing On did on it. I used the Paper Acrylic Brush for it. Do you guys have any brush preferance that you like to use on PaintTool Sai - Kinda don't really know what to use brush-wise)

BAM, WE HAVE A NEW ART CONTEST!

Draw Me a Pokemon starts off our newly added contest!

It's a monthly drawing contest! Enjoy, everyone, hope to see some awesome work!

Janet213 May 5th, 2011 2:48 AM

Akiyuki Aretukasu, I think the 1st picture is the best in colour.

Liquid Twilight July 29th, 2011 11:36 PM

Poll answer: I prefer a Flatbed Scanner but rarely have one to hand so a Digital Camera does the job.

A couple of small questions.

Who here does art commissions? (I was going to advertise work on deviantART and try to get some commissions).

How much on average do you charge per commission?

and finally, is it legal to do and sell fan-art on Pokemon?

Amaruuk July 30th, 2011 12:09 AM

I do art commissions on dA (or I would if I had customers), but you aren't allowed to sell things here on PC.

Making profit from copyrighted stuff is technically illegal but typically no action is taken. I personally don't do fanart commissions for my own reasons.

Liquid Twilight July 30th, 2011 12:19 AM

Thank you for the info :) It's much appreciated.

Hey everyone! There's a bit of an art contest going on over in the Pokemon Manga & Comics, and you can nab a nifty emblem if you win! ^ ^

It's right on over here, so check it out!

Very cool! :33 sounds like fun!!!

Anastasia.R January 7th, 2012 7:34 PM

Whoa, okay a little dead here.

*revives*

Okay, here's some ideas and things I'm trying to do for the Art Gallery.

Things I'm bringing back to activity:

Draw Me ... - It was a monthly drawing contest which I couldn't continue for quite a bit, but I will be bringing back. Also, you get a sweet emblem:
http://img31.imageshack.us/img31/4825/drawmewinner.png
The Art PC Pokedex - Big Art project for the Art Gallery (new members ans helpers are welcomed!) that I'm finally getting helpers for. =] Also, for those who do submit work, you get another cool emblem!
http://i51.*.com/2vado20.jpg
Animation, bros. That's a pretty sweet emblem.

Ideas I have

Finish That Picture! - We start with an incomplete picture, and the next poster would finish it. Easy as that. However, I'm bringing it up in case anyone has a better idea for a game/something fun and if anyone has questions about it.
Crit off! - I did read this idea months (possibly even a year ago) that a Critique contest would be cool. At first, I thought it was a boring idea, but then finally understanding how important and useful critiques are (I'm kinda talking about constructive crits), I thought it wouldn't be a bad idea.
A big PC Art Collab picture - A big collaboration with the artists here on PC. Sorta like how G&P once had a art worm project once. It's much easier with an Art Worm for graphics, but I think if I find away to make a cool collab. with the people here on PC, I think it would be a very fun idea!

So, I want to post these ideas to you viewers of the Art Gallery. Like any ideas? Have anymore cool suggestions? POST 'EM HERE! I'd really love to hear some feedback on some of these ideas and new ideas to bring to the Art gallery to make it more enjoyable. =]

Sheep January 7th, 2012 7:43 PM

These are perfect, Ana! I'm the type of person who waits until inspiration hits to draw (which doesn't happen too often lmao) and those ideas all really make me inspired to get to work :3 I'd love to participate in pretty much everything! I was wondering what happened to the art Pokedex too; I'd love to help out with some of that, as well :D

Something like a continue the picture seems like it'd be fun. First person draws a scene and the next person draws something that happens next. So I can start with a street and the next person can continue the story by drawing someone walking to school on that street etc etc. Not sure how active it'd be, but it seems fun! Maybe to encourage activity we can tell people not to spend too much time on every strip otherwise it'd take too long to advance from one panel to the next.

Now these are a cool idea. It'll give someone like me a chance to push myself while trying to complete a drawing in a completely different art style. These are pretty neat ideas. :)

Sheep January 10th, 2012 10:08 AM

I definitely think we need some kind of events hosted sometime in the future since the activity of the section has been dwindling a bit. I'm sure these will help it get back on its feet. :3 I'd love to be a helper if you're still in need of them, too; I've got lots of free time!

Castgurl January 11th, 2012 1:16 PM

I agree with Cirno, we have a lot of people on here that have talent, love art and both in between! And can have fun as well in this forum. I'm pretty free as well on the weekends unless I'm offline busy finishing up my introduction pages of my comic; I'll be happy to help out as well! ^_^

Anastasia.R January 23rd, 2012 3:27 PM

Well, I'm planning to work on the next "Draw Me" competition. It most likely will involve collaborations with people! How fun?

I also came up with another idea. Why don't we make teams and battles for the Art Gallery? I know the Graphic & Photography has "Battles" with each others. I just remember a big event I use to take part in another forum where you'd make teams and compete with artists on different teams.

Not only that, but maybe we can even have Pixel and Graphic artists involved as well.

Team example: Team Red (BORING, BUT WHATEVER)
Have a leader with an artist talent. Then, have a requirement of a drawing artists, sprite artists, and graphic artists.

Compete with other teams. However, battles wouldn't be mixed (ex: Sprite artist vs A drawing artist).

I'm more unsure of this idea, and I don't have a complete idea about this.

Anyone have more ideas for this idea? Continue this idea or not? I thought it would be cool, and you can participate with people you might know or not.

ALSO, WHOEVER WANTS TO HELP ME WITH IDEAS I HAD BEFORE, PM ME. I'm going to plan making the threads.

moments. January 23rd, 2012 3:54 PM

As a graphics artist, it would be very interesting and fun to collaborate with some of you guys in battles, or just for pieces or whatever. Plus the art boards should be more integrated anyways! Anyways, if this idea goes through or needs more consideration from another perspective, I'm all for it! Sounds awesome!

Sheep January 23rd, 2012 4:20 PM

Oh, competing against each other like that seems fun! :3 But my only issue is that I don't think we have enough people to have a contest with several artists on a team yet? Maybe we can start off with smaller things, like your Draw Me idea, to bring some more members in and move onto competitions when we have enough users. :D But either way, I'm sure it's worth a shot if you're set on starting it up soon.

I'd love to help with anything so I'll send a PM!

Hi all, I am no graphics artist. But i do like to waste some time pretending I am. I was wondering where I could post an image and have it critiqued. ( I am not sure a thread is necessary) Perhaps I could get some useful tips and pointers as I am not very experienced. Thanks for you time.

General critiques and such are usually given in the Drawing Display Thread. :3 If you're looking for more serious critiques where the user critiquing gives you a rough paintover to help you better visualize the critique you're given, then the Drawover Paintover Thread is where you should go. ^_^ But since those critiques require a little more time to put together, it might take longer for people to get back to you.

Also, I'm assuming you're talking about drawn artwork and not graphics such as icons or banners? Because if you are, I'd recommend heading over to the Graphics Rating Thread to have your graphics critiqued. The rules state you have to critique the user above you (or at least critique someone else that has posted) before requesting critique for your own work, though.

Good luck! =D

It's a cel-shaded Pokemon image, I'm not entirely sure which catagory it would fall in. I didn't draw it, but I did spend quite a lot of time coloring it. It was on the tag of a plush that I bough, and I just had to have a digital version of it.

Sheep January 28th, 2012 11:44 PM

Hm... that would likely go in the Drawing Display Thread, but since it's not 100% your work (assuming the lines are traced?) I don't really recommend posting it at all; it won't do much to critique an image that isn't entirely yours. x: The rules don't say anything about posting vectors/an edited version of an official image so I could be wrong but in this case (since your image is so similar to the original, same lines and colors minus the tail being a different color and very little visible shading) there's not much left to critique after you take those things into account. Though it might be plausible if you're only asking for critique on your shading. Again, I could be wrong since we don't run into too many cases like yours here that I know of - you'd best contact Anastasia.R and ask her directly about this!

That about sums it up there. Oh and I did go out on a limb and did the eyes. They are very dark brown with some black mixed in. Its not 100% a copy and its not 100% mine either. Iam interested in learning new shading, highlights as well as background ideas. Thanks for the input, I will be sure to ask the mod of the section.

Technically that's a soft shaded image; not cell shaded.. so there isn't much to critique in terms of shadows. Cel shading generally is used for animators because it's where it originated. It is near impossible to give a soft shade that looks natural to a character; therefore they would animate the shadows on another layer to match the animation, but this also means that they had to be more precise. (there is also soft-cell shading which is a blend of both)

If you wanted to redo this piece with proper cel-shading and asked for a critique on shading, then I think it's entirely fine to post and ask for that. However, as the piece stands now, there's not really anything to critique as it is more of a "fill in mostly-flat colour" than a drawing that focuses on lighting.

I hope this makes sense; and I really really encourage you to try this again with proper cel-shading. It is reeally good practice for understanding the forms of the object or character.

Anyways.. it was hard for me to find a picture of the same image shaded in two different ways so I'm using this 3D example. The one on the left would be considered soft-shaded.. and on the right it is cel-shaded.

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/b/b7/Toon-shader.jpg

Give it a shot; try colouring something with multiple different lighting sources. It's a great challenge! Then you have more of a basis to come back and ask for a critique! :33

Good luck!

What to do With all those cards!

I had recently came across all of my pokemon cards (Thats a lot of cards) And I taped them all together and laminated them and Now have pokemon card wallpaper in my room (And I didn't even use all my cards!) I was wondering Has anyone else used their pokemon cards for a creative project like this? I still have quite a few cards left (200+) and I would like Ideas I am completely out of them!

And yes I took out my rarest cards so dont fret about me wasting good cards.
I toook out my charazard Ho-oh (2 cards holo) and my Ancient mew card (Completley useless but rare!)

I'm just curious: those who are graphic artists, in which kind of projects do you work?

I mean, do you work in a study? Do you work as freelances? Do you work in personal projects?

Dark Symphonia April 23rd, 2012 4:03 AM

Hey peeps I need a little help and advice here.

So, after starting to upload my artwork for a couple of months of so, I have come to the realization that most of my artwork are kinda rushed and just 'drawn for the sake of drawing for the sake of killing time'. I end up not feeling confident about my work and so for now, I intend to start all over to learn how to draw anime fanart - the proper way.

So this is my plan for now: I will spend a few hours each weekend doing 2 things. First, I will print out and trace over official artwork from my favourite series, and learn how to shade them using either pencils or color pencils. Second, I will learn how to draw the anime face properly and practice by drawing portraits/mugshots. Once I am confident with my shading, I will then shade my drawings and then move on to anatomy.

I was also wondering if anyone could recommend me any useful and simple tutorials on how to do the above. (Yeah, I know there are resources that I can easily find here and there, but I hope I can get some recommendations.) And is my approach to improving correct? I want to know because I really want to improve with the limited time I have now.

Thanks for your valuable advice.

I, on the other hand, think that's a terrible idea. It's great to have inspiration; but tracing is only going to do you any good if you deconstruct the drawing while you trace it. That means.. doing draw-throughs and drawing the structure lines.

You need to learn anatomy first before going onto shading. Shading is sculpting, and if you don't know the form, you wont know what way the light will hit the object.

I would actually, instead, find pictures of people in a magazine, and try to pull off the same style/expression in your chosen anime style. That way you will learn anatomy, structure, and an approach to a style all at once. Print out your references from other manga, and have that beside you as you try your own approach at drawing in a similar style, using that real pose as a base.
After all, anime is a caricatured version of real life; and if your anime drawing is lacking, it's because your life-drawing is lacking.

I also recommend posemaniacs.com for studying the human body. If you don't study you wont grow. That's the proper way to do it.

If you're even more serious about it, I'd set aside at least 30 minutes every day or an hour or so every other day to do this. If you only draw once a week you won't improve as fast as you seem to be expecting results. But if you're busy I guess it can't be helped.

I think the best tutorial is just to draw anything and everything around you. Even that glass of water beside your desk next to that crumpled tissue. When you improve your visual memory and your sense of perspective and being able to put what you see on paper.. then drawing from your imagination will also improve because you will have a better sense of visual space.

Good luck! VM me if you want/ need more info.

I personally work on personal projects. I'm not confident enough with my graphics art skills yet so it's currently a bit easier for me to work on things where I have full control over what I think should be there (rather than a commissioned piece where I'm told what to do).

Everyone's different when it comes to what helps you learn best, but I wouldn't say that's a bad idea. :D I actually did something similar when I was learning - took some trace paper and traced over Pokemon for about a year or two, which helped a lot with my animal drawing skills, though you definitely shouldn't rely on it. Copying and tracing is definitely not a bad place to start learning at all!

Though honestly, I think it's a bit better to practice anatomy before shading. You really should have a decently good grasp on the former before trying the latter. Things are different for everyone, though, so I'd give your method a shot sometime to see how it works out for you. Sadly there's no surefire way to tell if you'll improve quickly in a limited amount of time. You'll just have to keep practicing!

^Something I completely neglected to mention. XD;

Simple trace-overs that don't require any thought processes and practice on understanding each separate "part" and how they properly go together to create one form (as my professor would say... though I probably didn't remember it right haha) aka where you just trace without any thought behind it are not as helpful. I'm assuming you're aware of this for the most part, though at the same time it's hard to tell from your post if you're tracing just to have a base for your shading or not (I dismissed that idea and excluded it from my post, though). But as someone who just mindlessly traced for years without giving it much thought and actually improving very quickly from it, I can say things work differently for everyone (though there's obviously a "better" way to do things, but that is still up to the person to discover). I still wouldn't recommend mindless tracing, though. You really don't learn properly from it.

I did really like Kura's idea on getting magazine images for practice too, so give that a shot (: I hope you'll find what works best for you using of all these resources available to us :D

Hey! (I think I'm gonna regret this)

I, uh, have been trying to draw for years, but every time I try the only thing that comes out is a series of orderly scribbles.

I know that I have to practice practice practice but I feel like something's missing from the "practice" part that I can't put my finger on. Any help?

You may feel like you're probably making the same mistakes over and over again then. I know every artist seems to go through that stage and they feel like they are "plateau"ing and not getting any better. For every artist it's different the way that they overcome it, but for me, I like to look at some other artists' work and either try to emulate their style to learn something new about the way they see objects, or using some different artist's approaches by looking at sketches, watching someone draw, or even picking up some of those "how to" books. Even trying some blind contour, or trying to paint something with just thick blocky paintbrushes instead of working on lineart first, and etc.

Another thing you can do, and although it's a bit embarrassing for some people who don't think they're very good, but is posting your art online, getting critique, and then RE-DRAWING that same drawing with those critiques in mind. One artist that I love, Claire Wendling (she did the girls in my avatar/sig set) always redraws the same sort of pose that she's going for about 4-5 times until she feels she gets it "right" with small variations like bending the torso more, or changing a hand pose. Then post that one again and keep going from there. It's like working at a story with an editor or working on an essay with a teacher. It will start getting better and then your understanding of drawing will also improve immensely! Or try drawing the same thing from different angles to help understand the form.

http://30.media.tumblr.com/tumblr_lrcd9bzBIj1r0tcx5o1_500.jpg

Hope this helps and helps to inspire!

Well, thanks a lot for the suggestions, but I feel that I am in a dilemna; a contradictory situation.

Time is a big issue here. I really cannot explain to you why am I busy till the point that I can only afford practice for 2 hours each weekend day, and even then, I might not even be able to have enough time and energy to practice for that amount of time. Furthermore, I will only be able to pursue this hobby until the end of this year due to various reasons, after which, I might have to adbandon drawing completely, if not draw very infrequently.

I genuinely want to improve, but even if I did, I must be able to produce something by the end of this year.

So for now, I was thinking if I could develop a proper plan to be able to have a resonable level of skill in these things by the end of this year, using the 4 hours I have as effectively as possible.

1. Be able to draw anime portraits and shade them using pencils and color pencils
2. Do more spriting
3. Learn papercraft and scrapbooking techniques and use them to produce anime fanart

I say you should follow what you love doing. Even though I have no idea what reasons you have for abandoning your artistic hobby, I say you should do what you enjoy doing. Take time with your work, learn a skill and hone it more instead of rushing some papercraft, and then transition to spriting and change to shading and anime.

Every artist has their own style so try and figure out what style you have and what you like before learning a bunch of things continuously. You can worry about 'more spriting' later unless you are fond of that area. If you are interested in anime fanart, you should learn proportions and drawing bases of characters and their anatomy before learning how to shade them.
