Restalkers

In the recent OU metagame of D/P, sleep inducers have become highly popular. Having one of your pokemon put to sleep can often signify your loss. According to competitive play clauses, you can put to sleep only 1 of your opponent's pokemon, though pokemon who slept themselves with the move Rest aren't taken into account.

A lot of teams find the move Sleep Talk to be the best way to counter sleep inducers. I decided to make this thread for people to suggest and draw useful movesets of potential sleep absorbers, thus making it easier to choose a sleep talker that will fit your team needs.

So, what do we know about sleep inducers? The most common sleep move is Hypnosis (70%), which can be learned by the following pokemon: Poliwrath, Politoad, Gengar, Hypno, Noctowl, Yanmega, Stantler, Gardevoir, Spinda, Lunatone, Purugly, Bronzong, Spiritomb, Ninetales, Crobat, Persian, Golduck, Rapidash, Mr.Mine, Milotic, Chimecho and Drifblim.

Then we have Sleep Powder (75%), learned by most grassers: Venusaur, Butterfree, Vileplume, Bellossom, Venomoth, Victreebel, Exeggutor, Tangrowth, Jumpluff, Roserade and Carnivine.

Lastly, the best sleep move, Spore (100%), which is learned by Smeargle, Parasect and the infamous Breloom.

Grasswhistle and Sing are also viable sleep moves, but aren't used much due to their low success rate (55%). Jynx gets a special mention for her Lovely Kiss (75%).

I allowed myself to color the pokemon you are more likely to see in the OU environment, so when choosing your sleep talker, don't forget to take them into consideration.

From this list, you will notice that most of the common pokemon who carry a sleep move are special oriented ones. Gengar, Yanmega and Roserade are extremely dangerous, for they can put their only counter to sleep and then continue with sweeping your entire team. Roserade may not look all that threatening, but trust me, with its moderately good speed, high special attack and great moveset, not many pokemon can switch in safely.. which brings me to Blissey, the best special defence wall in the game.

Barring Breloom, Poliwrath and other few physical sleepers, Blissey can switch in on everything, absorbing the sleep, or any hard hitting special attack in case a sleep move was yet to be used.
But what happens when your Blissey gets hypnotized? would you let her dream, risking another pokemon to come and start setting up on you.. or would you switch, awakening her with Natural Cure, only to get your new pokemon put to sleep by a non-predicted consecutive Hypnosis..?
Blissey knows Serene Grace too, remember? Serence Grace, that hax-ish ability excessively used by the dreaded Togekiss. Yeah. Blissey can use Serene Grace to her advantage with 20% freeze from Ice Beam, 20% burn from Flamethrower and 20% paralysis from Thunderbolt. Body Slam and Thunder are also valid alternatives for 60% paralysis. And this how restalk Blissey shines.

http://www.dragonflycave.com/dpspritesshiny/242blissey.png

Blissey (♀) @ Leftovers / Life Orb
Ability: Serene Grace
EVs: 148 HP/252 Def/108 SAtk
Calm nature (+SDef, -Atk)
- Thunderbolt / Thunder
- Ice Beam
- Rest
- Sleep Talk

Absorb any status, with better chances at statusing the opponent back. Life Orb Ice Beam will 1HKO any silly 4HP/0Sp.Def Garchomp who switches in. Personally, with all the sandstorm teams running around, Thunderbolt and Leftovers are the better options, but Thunder and Life Orb can work in a Rain Dance team. Flamethrower is also an option, but it can be used against you to defrost a pokemon who was earlier frozen by Ice Beam. Charge Beam will guarantee a Sp.Atk boost, but it will occasionally miss, something Blissey can't always afford. Shadow Ball is also nice for the 40% chance of lowering foe's Sp.Def one stage.

So yeah, this is it for now. Post here your creative restalkers for others to comment on.

Regice @ Leftovers
Ability: Clear Body
EVs: 252 HP/180 Def/78 SAtk
Relaxed nature (+Def, -Spd)

Works well! Great mixed wall because with absolutely no Special Defense EVs or a + Sp. Def nature it's still got 436 Special Defense.

Ah, and an interesting set that I've once used before, nobody ever suspects it

I <3 resttalk metagross...or I used it a really long time ago lol

Raikou @ Leftovers ** Thunderstruck
Trait: Pressure
EVs: 252 HP / 84 SAtk / 172 SDef
Calm Nature (+SDef, -Atk)
- Rest
- Sleep Talk

- Hidden Power [Ice]

some old set from ADV I used to use (hooray for old Netbattle files) that probably sucks today (esepcially seeing it has no speed), but oh well. It was fun to run special tank Raikou...*sigh*

That Spitiomb is a beast, its Obi's from smogons isnt it ? I need to breed me one of those....

As of late, ive been experimenting with this as a sleep talker ....

[email protected]
Bold Nature
252 HP / 252 DEF / 6 SP.DEF
- Hidden power Electric / Ice Beam
- Hydro pump
- Rest
- Sleep Talk

This makes a decent switch into Milotic and bulky water counter in general. Taunt Gyarados doesnt beat it, along as its awake.

it lacks Calm Mind, but rest talk make it incredible hard to get rid of. Hydro pump is there aswell for the reason of no calm mind.

This struggles against gengar.

Ice Beam is there if you really fear Tangrowth and bulky grass types, but Tangrowth really cant take a special hit to save its life.

Hidden power Electric says hi to Milotic and other bulky waters.

OR

[email protected]
Careful
252 HP / 78 DEF / 180 SP.DEF
- Rest
- Sleep Talk
- Brick Break
- Shadow Punch

This is nice, ghost and Fighting cover everything in the game for at least neutral, very durable.

[email protected]
252 HP / 220 Sp.D / 36 Spe OR 252 HP / 220 Def / 36 Spe
Calm / Bold Nature
- Rest
- Sleep Talk
- Thunderbolt / Discharge
- Hidden power Ice / Hidden power Grass

Good old rest-talk zappy =p

EVs and nature that you choose depend on what you want it to counter, bold and evs in defense, allow it counter breloom better. Evs in sp.def and calm nature counter milotic and stuff better.

My favorite though is this

[email protected] Scarf
104 HP / 252 ATT / 152 SPEED
Adamant Nature
Trait : Guts
- Close Combat
- Stone Edge
- Sleep Talk
- Megahorn

Pretty self explanatory, switch into a status and abuse guts=p

El Gofre January 27th, 2008 8:28 AM

You gotta love the classic snorlax. Heres my set for it:
[email protected]
252HP/100Att/100Def/58SpDef
Impish
Rest
Sleep Talk
Body Slam
Curse/EQ/Rock Slide

The first 3 moves are my usual snorlax set, with the last one differing on whether or not my team has a ghost weakness. Curse or without curse, its a bulky pokemon with some nifty stats and this has proven itself in the past.

ABYAY January 27th, 2008 9:56 AM

T_S you breed too good. lol

I gotta remake my current Modest Milo like this.
[email protected]
Bold
(Unsure of EVs; fill in plz? Preferred a good bit of HP)

Rest
Sleep Talk
Ice Beam
Surf

Stalled an Icy-Charge Cressy out of Charge Beams and Ice Beams, even with like 5 sp. atk boosts. Isn't that an impressive bout?

luke January 27th, 2008 10:37 AM

Trait: Battle Armor
EVs: 200 HP / 16 Atk / 180 Def / 80 SDef / 34 Speed

Stone Edge / Rock Slide
Waterfall
Sleep Talk
Rest
