King of the Swing!

My favorite characters in Nintendo History are Luigi & Link.

But, after playing Melee, I've come to like Donkey Kong!

Sooo...The pokemon I am trying out is obvious.

[email protected]
EQ/Fire Blast
Focus Punch
Pursuit/Fire Blast
Return/Facade
EV:???

You can clearly see I'm nearly clueless with this Magilla Gorilla. My common sense tells me that it's movepool can surely hit hard (No Stone Egde?), and respectable 95 Sp.Atk can make it hit Skarmory rather hard. I'm aware of Truant, I need advice to get around that, if possible. It has many possibilites, all which would make it uber, if not for is balancing ability.

I need help exploiting those possibilities. Should Toxic Orb w/Facade be my Choice? Or how about Return w/Choice Band/Scarf, or maybe Body Slam Hax? What should his EV's be? I wish it could learn Ice/Fire Punch.

And can Fire Blast have a place? For Skaretrong?

[email protected] Scarf
Nature: Naughty
EQ
Pursuit
Return/Body Slam
Fire Blast/Ice Beam
EV:252 ATK, 100 SP.ATK, 156 SPD

Any good? Fire Blast is for Skarm, & with Scarf, he can (more or less) get te first KO on almost anything dumb enough to feel his wrath. ANYTHING!

I think.

I might use a Leafeon on my team as well. Just to join in on this fun.And being able to pass out Swords Dance/Agility to this beast...well, it may be overkill, but I LOVE overkill. It's fun.

I just PMed this set to Samson. Id like this to be considered instead.

I have another question. I see many people saying Mr.Monkey Man can't take a hit. Why is that? It has an impressive Base Def, and an amazing Base HP. I don't see why people say that it can't take a it, & would like to understand why.

He also explained this very well.

On a side note...

I'm looking at the pokemon anime (english version). It must be so woderful to use a Piplup to decimate opponents, and Blizzzard/Zen Headbutt/Steel Wing Yanma effectively. I envy them. And why does everyone's move glow white?

Thank you, Loquacity.

Slaking gets the elemental punches from Emerald Move tutor.

Scarfking is a great thing to use.

sims796 February 2nd, 2008 9:27 AM

I reailized that after the bump, but I lost my Emerald.

Will Fire Blast work?

Kittyipawd February 2nd, 2008 9:34 AM

acually a good slaking requirwes major prediction but is best under choice band for example if you can predict that the oppenant will swicth you focus punch it can OHKO a skarm but ive never seen this only read

shedinjask February 2nd, 2008 10:16 AM

Fire Blast could work, yes.

And do consider Focus Punch somewhere.

Kittyipawd February 2nd, 2008 10:20 AM

your only running fireblast to kill skarm with a little prediction skill *which i know sims has* you can OHKO it thus hasving that massive attack stat with choice band still free to use and maybe even OHKO blissey *if she dares swicth in*

sims796 February 2nd, 2008 10:32 AM

What the hell? I could have SWORN I put Focus Punch up there. That's one of my favorite attacks. Bye bye Fire Blast.

I would LOVE to use Choice Band, but wouldn't it be harder to play? I mean, against the likes of Mence, or even chomp, who is faster.

it all reuires prediction i think you know how to predict ... anyways you run on slaking a stab move EQ a filler move and then focus punnch so if skarm tries to swicth in he is dead ... firepunch is 2HKO but you wouldnt finsh him off becuase of abilty and roost thus prediction is key .. filerr move could be icepunch

OFF TOPIC: i want to battle you badly. ~TDB

Yeah, Slaking will plain hammer Skarmory with Focus Punch. Double_edge is cool if you can get it, as it does a truckload and Slaking has the HP to spare.

If you use a Choice Item, CB is much more useful than Scarf. I don't know, 690 Attack is a lot more satisfying than 460. If makes all the difference.

TDB, Fire Blast and Focus Punch don't even get close to OHKOing Skarmory :/ Not even a Focus Punch from a choice Band Heracross will OHKO it. Fire Blast will only 2HKO Skarm from a CBmence, which has more special attack than Slaking.

Fire blast is yuck on slaking IMO. Its only real use is for steel walls, which aren't as common as you'd think. Fire blast will really only hit Forretress for more damage than Focus Punch, and maybe Skarm.

Being stuck using fire Blast is just asking for Heatran or a Bulky Water to come in, set up SR or w/e they want, and just laugh. It's a pretty easy prediction. I tried Fire blast Slaking, I never really liked it.

Focus Punch from 690 Attack hurts, plain and simple.

For its STAB move, I never really liked Body Slam. Slaking wants power (Especially if you Scarf it) rather than trying to get lucky with paralyzing stuff. Return works if Double-Edge's recoil puts you off, but the extra power will really help. You can run the ever-risky giga impact, but you better be sure that there isn't anything that can stat-up blindly in your face and KO you.

EQ will hit a lot of stuff pretty dang hard. Focus Punch for the 3rd slot to hammer walls is the best option really. Fire Punch works too, and is also far superior than Fire Blast, as it will work off of that amazing Attack of Slaking.

For the last slot, you might have some difficulty. Slaking has a cool movepool to work from, and stuff like pursuit will beat up gengar (and you resist its STAB move.) I think it learns Sahdow Claw or Night Slash, which works there. Really, w/e you want. It gets the elemental punches, so you can use those. Still, STAB Return/Double-Edge will do more than a supereffective elemental punch, but yeah.

Personally I'd run:

Slaking @ Choice Band
Trait: Traunt
EVs: 4 HP / 252 Atk / 252 Spd (HP over speed will help it switch in if you prefer that route.)
Adamant Nature (+Atk, -SAtk)
- Double-Edge (Return works here.)
- Earthquake
- Focus Punch
- Pursuit

Go go go Wonder Guard!

EDIT: If you're worried about fast dragons that might want to nail you, Jolly nature is an option. It actually ties Mence and Flygon for speed and is barely slower than Garchomp. With jolly, only Jolly Garchomp will outspeed you, and +Atk or SAtk natures are almost always ran on Mence and Flygon, so yeah.

Kittyipawd February 2nd, 2008 11:36 AM

Sorry I just read it on smgon and it said that it would OHKO a skarmory but then again I could be blind *Most likely* .... I don't get it heracross has less base attack then a slaking .... ~TDB

Anti February 2nd, 2008 11:47 AM

Heracross gets STAB on Focus Punch would have been my point. Slaking will HAMMER Skarmory with Focus Punch, but I'm pretty sure it will not OHKO. I'll run a calc now...54%-63% damage. That's a good amount, but not a OHKO by any means (and yes, that's with Choice Band factored in).

^That calc is on Max HP max Def Skarmory.

sims796 February 2nd, 2008 11:56 AM

First off, this isn't a shoddy bash, but on wifi, I've been seeing nothing but steel walls, who are all too common. Hence I thought Fire Blast, but Ill do without. I will Band it, as TB has a point. Slaking is all about prediction, which is my strong point.

I will never use Giga Impact, I hate that move. Especially since I cant switch. Return'll do nicely. And I'll use Jolly.

That works nicely. Steel walls might be common on WiFi, but Fire blast is still pretty meh when Fire PUNCH or Focus Punch are much better for nailing those walls anyways.

The only thing I really suggest you change from what you currently have is Jolly. Slaking is pretty bulky, and can take a hit from Flygon or Garchomp, and physical Mence can't really hurt it that much either...it takes a special attack to really break it.

If I'm a user of an Adamant Garchomp and slaking comes in, I'm switching out as I'll think Slaking is jolly anyways. I really doubt Garchomp, unless it's jolly (which will outspeed Jolly Slaking anyways), will want to stay in and take return.

Meh, that might depend on the set of the Dragon. But really, Slaking is just for hit and run, as the things you'll be switching it in against won't be really eager to stay in, and you'll really want power over speed in most situations.

I really think Slaking is much mroe effective with Adamant. It really is in all honesty, as I use it on my current Netbattle team actually lol

Hm. At times like this, I must rely on an acient tactic in order to decide which is the right path for me to decide...

Heads or Tails.

Heads or Tails.

I actually have done that before to decide things, with about a 75% success rate (approximately). Go go go heads!

Better way to do it is to try out both and see what one you like better. for me, it was adamant. Another personal preference deal.

sims796 February 2nd, 2008 12:22 PM

I haven't the time to raise two, so I must pick one. I might do jolly, as I'm a sticler for speed.

He's a beast in 2 vs 2. Especially with Claydol.

Kittyipawd February 2nd, 2008 12:33 PM

Umm this will be a random opion I wouldn't try to use caculations on shoddy becuase I made my jirachi setup lightscreen then I swicthed into articuno while oppenant swicthed into magmortar who used thundebolt and got a crit and OHKOed my cuno but my cuno can take spec hits from starmie *thunderbolt* without lightscreen .... ~TDB

lol, I use Netbattle, which will still work if both pokemon were around during 3rd generation.

becuase I made my jirachi setup lightscreen then I swicthed into articuno while oppenant swicthed into magmortar who used thundebolt and got a crit and OHKOed my cuno but my cuno can take spec hits from starmie without lightscreen .... ~TDB

That made absolutely no sense. Besides, who brings in Slaking while Reflect is up and the opponent has a Skarmory?

Really, half of that post was spelled wrong, I just didn't get it.

What you said was totally irrelevant to damage claculations or anything really, if I am getting the ocrrect meaning out of what you're saying.

Kittyipawd February 2nd, 2008 12:43 PM

I wasn't trying to say bring a slaking against a skamory under reflect I just don’t trust shoddy first off because one on wifi I rarely miss versus shoddy where my drifblim never hits with hypnosis, secondly how come the articuno set you gave me can survive a Starmie with choice specs using thunderbolt without light-screen but cannot survive a critical hit from a magmortar who is using thunderbolt when I have light screen up? ... ~TDB

Because Crit hits bypass stat changes (Calm minds, Curses etc), defensive screens and do double the damage =/

sims796 February 2nd, 2008 12:51 PM

It also bypasses the effects of Burn, & other stat decreases.

What DA and sims said. Also, how in the world is that relevant? Not to mention it's inaccurate :/

Anyways, need any more help with Slaking sims? I love that thing and use it a lot, so I can help here.

sims796 February 2nd, 2008 2:23 PM

Not so much. The final set is:

[email protected] Band
Nature:Adamant/Jolly
EQ
Focus Punch
Return
Pursuit
EV:252 ATK, 252 SPD

Now, I do need help with that little side note I had posted in the first post.

Looks good. I vote adamant as you know, but I wonder what the coin thinks...heads or tails sims? lol

Samson February 2nd, 2008 3:29 PM

well either you go full power, or don't bother. so adamant.

and i'm not a fan of pursuit on slaking. only obvious pokes like blissey would switch out, but that's about it. perhaps there are switch "happy" people who will switch physical walls because they are exactly that -- physical walls, but if someone has the oppoortunity to take out a slaking, i think they would.
