R/B Monotype Challenge 2008 ~Sign-ups are Full~ thx :P

This is a Red/Blue (no yellow) version single-type team challenge, since the originals were the best.

These are the rules:
• Play through the game using only one type of pokémon. Dual types are allowed as long as they have the type you picked in the first place.

• If your starter is not your type, you can not use it. However, if you wish, you may use Gameshark ONCE to obtain a certain type pokémon early in the game.

example: Gameshark so I catch a wild Magnemite, but I started out with Squirtle so my rival had Bulbasaur. Electric is weak against Grass.
go to http://www.psypokes.com/rby/rbgameshark.php to get the code.

• No Flying-type teams with Charizard, Aerodactyl, Gyarados, Scyther, etc. Seriously...

• No Dragon, Ghost, or Ice teams because of lack of pokémon of those types.

• Other than to get a different-type starter, no other cheating is encouraged such as more gameshark and the Missingno duplications. Safari Zone pokémon on Cinnabar glitch IS allowed.

• No duplicating TMs. Each TM must be used only once. You CAN trade to GSC to teach a TM to a pokémon that is not a TM in Red/Blue.

• Trading to GSC is allowed only to get unobtainable pokémon such as Magmar in Red and Electabuzz in Blue.

• Trading for evolution is permitted.

• No duplicates. You can't fill your team with any more than one of a species. No Gyarados teams please.

• The challenge is complete when you defeat the Pkmn League (duh).

• No legendaries (there are only 4, so its not too much to ask).

• Since so many pokémon are Rock/Ground or Ground/Rock, there is only one Rock and Ground team.

• HM slaves of different types are allowed, but CAN NEVER be used in battle.

• Post your progress.

Dude, I don't think I've ever seen so many rules for one of these challenges. Putting embargoes on things like Dragons, Ice, and Ghosts, and diverse flying teams is a tad controlling, no?

Darkjagwar February 19th, 2008 12:20 PM

Not to be too strict, but the thing is that in red/blue there are only 3 Dragon-types, 3 ghost-types, 4 ice-types (excluding Articuno).

The ghost-types and ice-types can be used in different teams.
Jynx can be used in a Psychic team, Dewgong and Cloyster can be used in a water team.
The ghosts can be used in a poison team.

Flying-type really isn't really a primary type like the others are, which is my only reason for excluding it from the list.

JX Valentine February 19th, 2008 12:53 PM

Sounds like fun. I'll take on Water-types, if you don't mind.

Darkjagwar February 19th, 2008 1:43 PM

Red1530 February 19th, 2008 4:45 PM

Can people participate in this even if they use ROM's so their teams on the cartages are not affected.

Darkjagwar February 19th, 2008 6:42 PM

yeah. definitely. that's the exact reason i'm using a rom. this is the honors system, so I trust everyone is avoiding gamesharking a million rare candies in and stuff. I know it took me like 2 hours of straight playing to get my Magnemite to know Sonicboom when I faced Brock. if you want to participate, which type team do you want?

Red1530 February 20th, 2008 5:20 PM

I guess that I would do the grass team.

JX Valentine February 23rd, 2008 11:00 AM

I totally am not lagging on updates.

Name: Jax
(In-game name: Satoshi)
Type: Water

Starting off in Pallet Town, I finally got around to battling my rival. I think my Squirtle is special or something, as I really don't remember any past starters missing with Tackle that often.

But whatever. I shrug it off, use my Potion, and beat my rival nonetheless.

Heading north, my first encounter is with a level 4 Rattata. By now, I'm starting to think my luck is really going to suck in this game. Worked my way up Route 1 (nearly killing Squirtle in the process) to Viridian City. I managed to get the Parcel and head back to Pallet, only to nearly kill Squirtle again on my way back to Viridian.

By now, I have Bubble, which is a good thing because, frankly, Tackle just isn't cutting it. Worked my way through Viridian to the point where Squirtle was around level 14 before hitting Pewter.

The next day was the day I challenged Brock. It was also the day I decided to take back what I said about my luck, as I defeated Brock in two minutes. Two. I counted. (Oddly enough, Geodude had to go down in two hits, while Onix was an OHKO. Granted, the latter was with a crit hit, but still.)

Currently milling around on my way to Mt. Moon. Wartortle evolved after the first couple of trainers on my way from Pewter to the cave, and right now, the thoughts going through my head are, "Maybe I should buy that Magikarp, but I know it's going to really suck trying to piggyback that thing through Mt. Moon in an attempt to get a Gyarados."

Team

Wartortle, lvl 16
- Water Gun
- Tail Whip
- Tackle
- Bubble

BREAKINGBEN February 24th, 2008 5:20 AM

1.) How many Fire types are there in red? and 2.) If theres over 5(ill go with 4) can I have the fire team?
Nvm about that. I guess I'll just take the fire type for this.

Smarties-chan February 24th, 2008 5:39 AM

I might as well join in. I'll take the Normal type.

Sushi. February 24th, 2008 5:52 AM

I gots a question. Can HM slaves be used to catch pokemon in the wild (as you can see, Charizard is WAY over leveled), and can they be used as decoys for healing during a Gym leader battle?

Darkjagwar February 24th, 2008 12:09 PM

Next update for me and I'm changing to semi-story mode. my updates didn't have any flavo(u)r before :P

After arriving in Celadon and doing some shopping and training, I decided to challenge Erika at the gym. After quickly speaking with the silly old man peeping into the all-girls gym, I walked in only to be immediately challenged. Pikachu's Swift came in handy since his Thundershock didn't do much damage to the Grass-type pokémon. After defeating all the trainers, I finally took on Erika. Not exactly the most exciting battle ever. Pikachu's Thunder Wave and Swift combo worked like a charm, and Magneton's Supersonic and Sonicboom took Erika's pokémon out easily, mainly because they kept hurting themselves. I grabbed my badge and TM and was on my way.

Instead of going through the underground, I decided to give my extra water to the guard going into Saffron City. I met Mr. Psychic and he game me the TM for Psychic. That will come in handy later.

I got to Lavender and proceeded to climb the ghost tower after meeting up with my Rival. Only Pikachu and Magneton know non-Normal moves, so Voltorb and Jolteon were useless until I faced the Rockets at the top. Then Voltorb and Jolteon got a good workout.

I returned to Saffron to take on the Fighting Dojo. The problem with using my all-Electric team is that they have very bad defensive power...except for Magneton of course. It was all about speed, so I had no problem, since the Fighting types had bad special stats. Pikachu's speed and Thunder Wave gave him the first shot every time, so his Thundershock did some serious damage. Magneton's high defense kept him in the game and his extremely high Special-Attack made his Thundershock my secret weapon. I made good use of Jolteon's Sand-Attack and Voltorb's Screech as well. As my prize I took Hitmonchan because it can use Thunderpunch, but I'm not really going to use it.

Now it's time to conquer Silph Co...

Team:

Voltorb Lv 22
Attacks: Tackle, Screech, Sonicboom, Selfdestruct

Jolteon Lv 30
Attacks: Tackle, Sand-Attack, Quick Attack

Pikachu Lv 39
Attacks: Thundershock, Swift, Thunder Wave, Agility

Magneton Lv 39
Attacks: Thundershock, Sonicboom, Thunder Wave, Supersonic.

Dux (Farfetch'd) Lv 15 (HM SLAVE)
HMs: Fly, Cut

In the PC:
- Squirtle Lv 6
- Hitmonchan Lv 30

BREAKINGBEN February 24th, 2008 12:42 PM

Not much has really happened since my last update but here we go.

In order to get HM05 (flash) you need to obtain at least 10 different types of pokemon. As I was leaving Vermillion, I only had....5 (mainly charmander evolving). I went on a catching spree, snatching a Diglett, a Mankey, a Rattata, a Pidgey, an Ekans, an Oddish, and a Voltorb.

Taught Voltorb flash to make Rock tunnel a little less harder (as if going through with a fire/flying type wasn't bad enough).

Made it through Rock Tunnel with ease (and a little help from Super Potions and an Ether). Not much trouble there and Charizard benefited a LOT from going through, he deserves a looooong rest. (Flareon time :D).

Well, I FINALLY caught my Growlithe. They kept using roar on me so it was both VERY hard and VERY annoying. :\

Team: YES, I gots my Growlithe!!!

Charizard (Blaze) L: 43 HP 144
Scratch
Slash
Ember
Rage
I used an HP-UP that I got from Mt. Moon on him.

Growlithe (Fira) L: 21 HP 55
Bite
Roar
Ember
I used two Carbos that I got from the Celadon Dept. Store, he was just TOO slow.
HM Slaves:
Dux-Cut and soon Fly
Voltorb-Flash

The Virus February 24th, 2008 1:20 PM

Darkjagwar can i do the Bug type? I'll start tommorrow.

BREAKINGBEN February 24th, 2008 3:08 PM

All I have to say is this, Good Luck Crimson. You'll need it :).

Sushi. February 24th, 2008 3:14 PM

I probably start this challenge tommorrow because i'm right now waiting till the Pokemon DP Movie starts.

Phish February 24th, 2008 5:18 PM

Yes, I realize this is my first post, but I would like to get in this. I will take the rock/ground. I have a question about the team though, say I want to use maybe a Sandshrew, but he is only ground, not rock. Am I still aloud to use him? Also, I am most likely going to use Omanyte, but he is rock/water. There is still that rock type in there so is he unusable?

Darkjagwar February 24th, 2008 5:26 PM

yes. you can use Sandshrew/Sandslash. Kabuto/Kabutops, Omanyte/Omastar, and Aerodactyl are also acceptable for the Ground/Rock team.

Phish February 24th, 2008 6:01 PM

I started playing before I got the ok to do rock/ground and before my question was answered(worst comes to worst, I would start over)

Heres a few updates
-I realized I wouldn't be able to catch a rock/ground pokemon for a little so I made an Omanyte(One of my favorites)
-Trained to level 9
-Beat Gary
-Breezed through the Viridian Forest(who knew I could take out Weedles?)
-Took out that joke named Brock

Pokemon:

Omanyte lvl 14
Water Gun and Withdraw

I plan on catching a Geodude and a Sandshrew soon though

JX Valentine February 25th, 2008 6:32 AM

*drops in* Hi! Update time!

Player name: Satoshi
Type: Water

Log:

You know what really sucks? Having to piggyback a Magikarp through Mt. Moon because you really do want that Gyarados. Not only does it hinder your main Pokemon, but it makes Mt. Moon so much longer.

Nonetheless, an hour and seven Potions later, I emerge from Mt. Moon with the Dome Fossil (because I've always had a fondness for the Kabuto line for reasons that certainly have nothing to do with fangirlism) and a Magikarp that's been successfully leveled up nine times.

You know what also sucks? The fact that Magikarp grows slowly. I'm just about ready to break down and have me some carp sushi.

Somehow, I stagger into Cerulean City and, after healing up, immediately hit Cerulean Gym, piggybacking Magikarp even more.

How did the battle go? Surprisingly well. Why? Because Misty and I decided it'd be fun to spam Tackle on each other. Also, I still have Potions. I win, Ariel. Go back to singing "Under the Sea."

By now, I'm surprisingly overleveled for my rival, Shigeru. (I swear, his team wasn't that low-leveled last I remember going through Red.) That said, I survived enough to piggyback Magikarp and smack Ivysaur around by spamming Tackle even more. And Magikarp faced its first battle by spamming Tackle against Shigeru's Abra. Oh, Tackle. How much I wish I had better moves.

Standing in front of Nugget Bridge now. Why? Because by the time I finished last night, I realized starting to play at one in the morning was probably not a good idea.

Team:

Magikarp, lvl. 17 (Okay, I admit I used the two Rare Candies I found in the game so far.)
- Tackle
- Splash

Wartortle, lvl. 24
- Water Gun
- Tackle
- Tail Whip
- Bubble

BREAKINGBEN February 25th, 2008 1:51 PM

Nothin' much, just trained my growlithe a few levels and boy is it ANNOYING! He BARELY can take on two enemies in a row without having to heal, but I guess that it will be worth it.

Team: Holy huge updates batman!
Ok, so my updates aren't THAT huge :/.

Charizard (Blaze) L: 43 HP 144
Scratch
Slash
Ember
Rage

Growlithe (Fira) L: 32 HP 83

Roar
Ember
Take Down
Hard as heck to train!
Flareon (Ember) L: 31 HP 90
Tackle
Sand-Attack
Quick Attack
Ember
Ok, I'll admit it as well. I used 3 rare candies on him because I got fed up with training.

HM SLAVES:
Dux-Cut
Voltorb-Flash

Red1530 February 28th, 2008 6:06 PM
