Battle Terminology
I'm relativly new to the world of competitive battling. As such, I see terms thrown around all the time- "Wall","sweeper", "Tank" come to mind really fast. Can someone explain these to me? Not just those terms, either. The most common ones people use in relation to team structures. Maybe there's a glossary somewhere and I just missed it? If not, maybe I should run around, compile a list, and make one O.o
{After reading this, I think it makes no sense, but we'll try it anyway.} |

It's mine and Toothache's guide. It should help clear things up for you. Battling things are most likely located in Strategies and Movesets. |
You know... My annoying brongzong move mix is this:
Block+Earthquake+Hypnosis+Dream eater Annoying, isn't it? |
Not really. Hypnosis is not very accurate. And when a fire/flying type switches in (moltres/charizard), they will own that bronzong.
|
Moltres and charizard is hard to get, and hypnosis always works for me! So it's still good.
|
Yeah, and god help you if you think that'll do anything if someone switches in a Honchkrow. You'll just end up giving their setup time. An annoyer set usually uses Toxic, or a confusing status move, not just trapping them. A good example of an annoyer?
Lanturn: Confuse Ray Thunderwave Attract Surf See? It's got quite a bit better of a chance to annoy. All its moves are 100% accurate and can be used at the same time. |

...This all really has nothing to do with the topic.... which was already answered... |

Facepalms @ bold. Shauna, if you want battling advice, I recommend NEVER coming to this forum. Go to Strategies and Movesets. |
I find it funny that this thread, asking about battle knowledge, has had 2 sets posted detailing the worst category of pokemon: The annoyer. NOBODY in their right mind dedicates a pokemon to p****ing off the opponent with gimmicky strategies.
The place for battle terminology is strategies and movesets, then post your questions in the FAQ. For the moment i'll provide a relevant answer: Sweeper: A fast, powerful pokemon intent on killing stuff Wall: A tough, defensive pokemon that is aimed at ruining a sweeper's day by soaking up attacks. Most also put status conditions on enemies or set up spikes and its variants Tank: Tough pokemon that are also capable of hitting hard. Other common categories are: spinners: Pokemon which get rid of spikes, toxic spikes ect Clerics: Pokes which heal their teams status conditions Hazers: Pokemon that get rid of stat changes Some pokes fulfill multiple roles. As an example, blissey is usable as a wall and cleric, and donphan is a wall and a spinner. Like its already been said, go to S&M for more detailed descriptions |
They all said it. Strategies & Movesets is the place.
