Did Any of You...

Did any of you ditch your starter pokemon and make a team without it?

EDIT: Also if you did, why, and did you replace it with a pokemon of the same type?

BREAKINGBEN March 21st, 2008 5:43 AM

In-game, no because I just feel a need to have it. Plus I choose that certain starter for a reason :).

diamondpearl876 March 21st, 2008 5:45 AM

In R/S/E? No, though I wouldn't have minded doing so.

FR/LG? Nah... I think in Leaf Green I have all the starters, actually.

Duuuarte March 21st, 2008 5:50 AM

Im asking because i want to train my vaporeon and i just want to have one of each element but i cant leave my squirtle behind =[ lol but yea, i grow really attached to my starter.

I always do it :P I just dislike using starters, that's all.

Duuuarte March 21st, 2008 5:55 AM

Can a team be just as good if not better without it? Doesnt your starter grow faster than any other pokemon you catch?

Team's strenght isn't relying on starter. Obviously, it's possible to make a good team without starter, but keeping starter in team isn't affecting it negatively. About growing, I think growth rates were added in R/S. Check on site like veekun or serebii for it. From what I recall, starters got medium growth rate.

Actually, growth rates have always been around. (Someone even cracked them as early as back when Red and Blue were the only games in the franchise.)

Otherwise, yeah, I agree with you. You can have a perfectly good team without starters. In fact, many people who play competitively don't use starters on their teams. It's really just a matter of preference.

For an in-game (against the trainers within the game, such as the Gym Leaders) team, it's not that difficult to simply leave out your starter and go for another Pokemon, as any Pokemon with a powerful set of moves can take down pretty much any trainer's team in the game.

Additionally, starters don't necessarily grow faster than other Pokemon you can catch. For example, Treecko actually grows at the same rate as a Lotad.

I ditched my Swampert when I first played Ruby. Because of two stupid reasons.
1)It doesn't learn Hydro Pump
2)It's ugly
Replaced it with Walrein though, and Walrein was great.

Soufiane March 21st, 2008 1:28 PM

I think starters are good pokemon to have in a party, They have good stats + attacks..

Skaterzpenguin March 21st, 2008 2:28 PM

I only ignore or skip my starter pokemon in red/blue/yellow versions...

Terry M March 23rd, 2008 7:26 AM

I kept Treecko because it was the only Pokemon I had that could learn CUT.I could then know what it was like behind the trees!

Ash&pikachuarethebest March 25th, 2008 9:09 AM

I always get rid of my starter as soon as i caught something of the same type i get rid of my starter.

SkittyLover77 March 25th, 2008 10:02 PM

Sometimes. Not usually, though.

♣Gawain♣ March 26th, 2008 1:46 AM

Nope and never will my starter pokemon be alone. It can't even stand a chance against the E4. A good 5 pokemon including my starter are enough.

BakingBluePotatoe March 26th, 2008 2:07 AM

not until AFTER the end... in other words, I almost ALWAYS have AT LEAST ONE of my starters with me

Dave-o-rama March 26th, 2008 3:03 AM

I've never ditched my starters, they grow to be really good if you train them.

El Gofre March 26th, 2008 3:35 AM

I kept swampert all the way through because it's one of the best pokes available early on and you get its prevolution automatically. Pretty sweet deal IMO

poisonspark March 26th, 2008 8:36 AM

I sometimes ditch my starters but not very often cause I tend to pick them for a reason...

missingnoresearcher April 7th, 2008 4:48 PM

Ditch my trochic in Emerald

Flan April 7th, 2008 9:13 PM

I ditched my Torchic in my Ruby for a Typhlosion.
(I got the Cyndaquil in Emerald, for those who are wondering)

I usually keep them, though, since most of the time I'm playing the game through the first time, and almost all of the Pokemon in the earlier routes are kind of ugly IMO.

Da Kid J3 April 7th, 2008 11:23 PM

Well i just started my fire red over again and i ditched my squritle. The only reason i chose him was so i could get a Raikou at the end of the game.my team is attually really good and better off without him i have a Lv:57 Pidgeot a Lv:43 Pikachu a Lv:47 Arcanine and a Lv:39 Rhyhorn i atually help me out by ditching him

P.S. i trained pidgeot from Lv: 2 route 1 Pidgey Ftw!

Rave Dragon April 8th, 2008 12:46 PM

I've ALWAYS ended up ditching my starter pokemon. I've just never been keen on them.
Except now in the new generation I'm using Blaziken and Blastoise. I never seem to use the starter I picked for each respective game though.

Barker April 8th, 2008 9:20 PM

I'll occasionally ditch the starter, when I'm doing weird things with my carts (Speed runs, Only Bug types, Only Pokemon with names starting with Z, whatever.)

However, if I'm not doing stuff, I keep it and cherish it.

. April 9th, 2008 4:47 PM

Never, not that I would mind, but starters are usually great with backup.
