But you're not prejudiced either, right? *Sigh* Tolerance works both ways, people.

Anyhoo, I think Ho-oh's cry is something like Kurrr-aaaaa! But I like epic hyperboles, so keep that in mind.

Honey, I'm from the south... Why don't ya come on down here and see what it is like when someone is gay. And how can I be prejudice? I'm bi. I ain't scared to tell y'all either. I have friends who are gay and who are straight, and church going ones too. It was a J-O-K-E. Calm down.

Whoa whoa guys, what happened to fanfiction!? Hmm... let's talk about why only two FFCs were finished. I was going to finish mine but I wanted to get my first chapter of DI done. Now that March is almost over, I'll just wait for the April prompt.

No time combined with lack of inspiration. You'd think with a prompt like "rain," I'd be able to throw something together, but everything I've come up with is a piece of crap. Might work on something tonight, though.

Percy Thrillington March 28th, 2008 5:35 AM

I was cheap and made it the second name of the main character. That's why.

Bay March 28th, 2008 8:45 AM

Pretty much the only idea I have for "rain" is a prequel to "Nothing, Everything" and it might be a very long one shot. :X That, and I really had no time despite in Spring Break right now (was very busy taking care a couple of stuff at home and helping an issue one of my friends was having). I'll pretty much wait for the April prompt, though.

Unforgettable March 28th, 2008 10:55 AM

I wrote two VERY short stories with the prompt, but neither one of them are good. But, I will post one of them. *sigh* My lack of inspiration is still taking hold... Maybe the next prompt will flip a switch in my mind. XD

BREAKINGBEN March 28th, 2008 12:35 PM

I have a simple question, how do I link chapters within my thread, for example. I want to make it easier for my readers to read my material, without having to scroll through every message... How do I do this?

Astinus March 28th, 2008 12:35 PM

I'm moving to the south. To North Carolina in a few years.

And bobandbill, the way that I act, my avatar, and the quote in my sig probably didn't help the gender confusion. So it's fine.

And I haven't touched my serious Pokemon fanfiction in two weeks. And I don't care! I'll see if I can force myself to scribble out enough to post it in July.

And the forums (rofl, nearly called it "lot". Too much Sims) were bugging, Ben, so I missed your question.

On the post of your chapter, in the upper right hand corner of your post, there's a white number. If you click on it, it will open that post alone in a new window. Copy the address of what window, and then go to the post you want to have the list in. Edit your post, using the tags to surround the address of the post, and there you go.

If I get any links that lead to some crap fic (by that, I mean fics that don't use proper grammar) then I'll be sure to leave a nasty review, probably sending the author on a flame rampage and finally, his/her ban. I plan these things out in my free time O_O; ...

Astinus March 28th, 2008 1:28 PM

My FFC prompt fic is already posted. My main Pokemon fic is sitting in some notebook on my floor, untyped and unthought of until today. My unfinished Digimon fic is sitting on my hard drive, taking my space I could use for more Sims clothes.

HEY EVERYONE READ MY FIC NOW ITS THE BEST FIC EVER AND ITS BETTER THAN YOU OR YOUR MOM OR YOUR MOMS MOM AND GRAMMAR IS FOR LOSERS THAT GO TO COLLEGE AND BECOME ENGLISH MAJORS NO ONE READS ANYMORE SO THEY MAKE FUN OF THE LOSER WHO CARRIES A BOOK IN HER POCKET

Why are you moving to North Carolina?

And yes, I have many of an unfinished Digimon and Pokemon fan fic... also a couple of Final Fantasy ones too... *sigh* And they are doing the same thing that your Digimon fic is doing, taking up hard drive space that can be used for sims clothes...

There is no way TK would ever type something like that. There must be a hidden message in there somewhere!

Scytheteen March 28th, 2008 6:07 PM

:o

My asty is moving farther away from me then she already lives

*dies*

I'm lazy and only came here to answer the question about FFC's and that I'm too lazy to finish mine and choose to copy Asty and play the Sims 2 (but unlike her I play it on the gamecube, which has so much more pwnage)

Astinus March 28th, 2008 7:03 PM

Yeah, well, Scythe, can you have custom clothes/hair/skin/furniture/houses for your Sims? Or give them seasons, a place to go downtown, dates, college educations, pets, hobbies, or give them babies? Huh, can you? I's du not think so!

They smell like dirty socks.

And I guess the reason why my post style changed is because:

I have a stash

Um...well...there's not custom clothes, hair, skin, furniture or houses for my sims. I can't go downtown, there's no dates, college educations, pet, or babies. WAIT! I THINK THEY HAVE HOBBIES!

*shot*

Astinus, your new posts reak of anarchy. It makes me ice cream melt.

Unforgettable March 28th, 2008 7:34 PM

YAY being happy, not caring and having a stash. That is the only way to be.

And I have the ps2 version of the sims 2 as well as the PC version. The PC versions PWNS all. XD

Astinus March 28th, 2008 7:42 PM

I love melted ice cream, and am currently waiting for my own ice cream to melt.

Yeah, well, we don't need no rules. Except for one: The enemy's gate is down.

Okay, that's why I'm crazy. Because I'm a rabid fangirl! With the rawr and the beating people over the head with vegetables when they don't agree with me and the looking for sekret clues. She talking, she talking, and the crazy, she come out of me and soak into the walls, and when the other people hit the walls, the crazy she go into them.

Now, ssshhhh, Scythe, for the people who make this life unbearable will complain about our anarchy, and try to force us to conform! But never conform! Never!

But to save us, we shall talk about the fanfiction as it says so in the title of the thread.

Write? We shall not write. We shall VALTZ!

Actually, mine is about two paragraphs away from being finished, but as I have contest judging, that's been getting in the way of it.

Scytheteen March 28th, 2008 7:46 PM

Okay. I'll say one line about fanfiction than rant about the sims 2, or anarchy, or melted ice cream, or some other random and SPAMmy topic. I may renew Season Champs. There, a line of fanfiction.

Annnnd, the Sims 2 for PC has like, no storyline to it, but the Sims 2 for GC has a story line, and much hotttter clothes to wear. Plus, you can go to a bio dome. o.o spicy.

I really don't know if I could've gotten the same response that I did from hitting on Astinus repeatedly earlier in this thread had she still been Hanako Tabris, which is why I'm quite content with the possible slight change.

It's more of a piece of crap that you step in randomly in the woods, and you have to head to class in a few minutes, but you realize "oh shi- I stepped in deer droppin's", so you meander around trying to find a stick to clean off your shoe. And then you crawl out of the woods into the teacher's parking lot with a stick in your hands, and you're looking for a specific car, and then you have to run to class because the police are staring at you because you're in the teacher's parking lot looking for a car with a stick.

In other words: no angst. Just crap.

And I was so going to give you a term of endearment, but I couldn't think of one that fits you, and I really don't like those terms of endearments.

Bay March 28th, 2008 9:25 PM

Seriously, I think Spring Break makes things a little crazier around here...XD

On to a more serious note, I've been wondering what people think of the epic genre:

What do you guys think of epic fics? You think having the fic as an epic genre makes it more deveolped, thought out, and better quality or is the epic genre a bit overated sometimes?

That thought came to mind after reading one review at Serebii of how there was suddenly a lot of epic fics coming or at least fics having potential to become one.

Wonder how this discussion will go. XD

Astinus March 29th, 2008 2:20 AM

The funny thing is that I'm not on Spring Break.

Hay guyz, we're getting rude in here. So let's all stop having our fun and be normal. Sorry, peeps, but there's no more keeping it real. *holds out fist* Feel me?

No one's seen me be rude yet. And you don't want to see me rude.

What do you guys think of epic fics? You think having the fic as an epic genre makes it more deveolped, thought out, and better quality or is the epic genre a bit overated sometimes?

I'll just copy my comment from your LJ, since it's six in the morning. So this post? Does not bring on the lulz.

To be an epic fic, the fic has to fall into the definition of what an epic is, which is the hero leaving home, fighting adversaries, gaining allies, and returning home transformed in some way. That's what it takes to be an epic to me. And it doesn't matter if the hero fights an evil team or the demons inside of them, as long as the hero changes somehow.

For epic works, there's of course "Beowulf", "The Odyssey", and "Gilgamesh". Those are the top poems of the genre. As for novels, the one I can think of is a triad of books from the DragonLance series, called Legends. Good books.

There is such a thing as "epic" failure, as there are failures in every genre. I don't know right now what would make an epic fail. I just woke up.

My own Pokemon fanfiction started out in the basic sense of an epic. My character begins and ends at home. This edition, however, she never returns home, but finds a new one. I have no idea if I would call that an epic. I try not to stick my fic into a genre that it wouldn't meet the qualities of.

There's a $300 reward for the arrest of the vandals. And they wonder why my school always gets vandalized...?

I've read "The Odyssey", and part of "Beowulf"(movie sucks), but I haven't gotten around to "Gilgamesh". Homer was a genius! And Shakespeare was a genius...I'm hoping to read more from him next year.

Astinus March 29th, 2008 12:06 PM

I also read "The Odyssey" and "Beowulf", albeit really abridged ones for little kids. Which means that it has been years since I read them. As for "Gilgamesh", that was read to the class I was in last year. And, to be quite honest, I am not sure what happens in the poem, since I was too busy looking at the storyteller than listening to the story.

As for Shakespeare, I highly enjoyed "Hamlet".

On the plus side, my already-loyal readers, I wrote two pages of my Pokemon fanfiction last night. Unfortunately, I messed up on the chapter breaks, so I have to go through and figure out where each chapter begins and ends. Do not fret, for I will be posting it this year.

txteclipse March 29th, 2008 12:19 PM

What do you guys think of epic fics? You think having the fic as an epic genre makes it more deveolped, thought out, and better quality or is the epic genre a bit overated sometimes?

Seeign as I'm writing one, I'd probably have to say I like them or my own mind would cancel itself out and my head would explode. That and my fic would go unfinished...I can't decide which would be worse.

Anyways, no offence, but this type of question kind of bugs me. The reason I say that is because everyone likes different things: I've met some people that think the fantasy genre is a waste of time, while I personally believe it is a perfect engine to express ideas about society and life without beating the reader over the head with said ideas. Also, quality varies from story to story, and author to author. I can't really say the epic genre is wholly awesome, because some stories contained within it aren't.

Given the potential of the genre to do certain things, I'd say it isn't overrated. It gives the author the ability to place characters in situations that aren't possible in order to illuminate or extrapolate upon the human condition. That's why I like it so much: it brings out the humanity (or inhumanity) of its subjects, and allows the author to delve deeply into the human conciousness. This allows him or her to attempt to show us (humans) exactly what we are: sometimes we are shown as brutal and beast-like at our core, while other times we are depicted as having an almost angelic center, or a combination of the two.

I could go on for days about the merits of the genre, so I'll stop there, but that's one of the major bits.

Bay March 29th, 2008 12:54 PM

Opps, sorry if that question bugged you txteclipse. ^^; The only reason I asked that question is that is the genre most people discussed and there would always be two sides on that genre, at least from what I saw: either you like it or don't. Also, I kind of got mad after a couple of people were saying, "This story is epic so it'll be good!", even if quality isn't the best in the world. True, that question could be asked on any genre, but it seems the "epic" genre is the one that causes the most stir, at least in my ophinion.

Gummy March 29th, 2008 4:51 PM

Is there going to be an official FFC Discussion thread or can we talk about it here? Either way, I have a new topic:

What do you think the new FFC prompt should be?

Astinus March 29th, 2008 7:32 PM

I think that the thread that Yuna started is the official thread. I should really sticky that thread or something.

And I already have an idea for the next prompt, and the prompt after that, and so on. It's just that if someone sends me a prompt that they really want to share, then it gets used at the next opportunity.

There will be no leaking of the next prompt. You'll just have to wait for Tuesday.

Astinus March 29th, 2008 7:34 PM

I'm stickying this, since this is the official discussion for the FFC.

Have fun, enjoy, and hope to see some stories soon.

Scytheteen March 29th, 2008 7:47 PM

Overated. Every time. Even if some of the greatest fanfic authors on here like Breezy, Saffire Persian or Jax Malcom (sorry Asty, I never saw any of your work XP) made an epic fic, I wouldn't even bother to read it.

You have a point there. And I have no doubt about the way she carries herself around. I mean, she looks about, what, in her twenties? And Ash is ten? Kinda shady there, if you know what I mean. No doubt "your father, Ash" is just another way of saying, "Actually, I don't know who fathered you."

I find that epic fics are a little inevitable in this fandom for the simple reason that Pokemon is, in itself, an epic. Well, an endless one (in the anime) or one with a very vague character who may or may not come back transformed (in the games). But one nonetheless!

Seriously, I don't mind them as long as the author knows what to do with them. Too many times, I've seen really bad attempts at doing epic fics or epic fics that start off okay or actually good but just sort of die after awhile because the author just loses inspiration/motivation to work on it. So, to actually answer the question, I don't find them overrated or whatnot at all. It's just that I hope enough people realize what they're getting into when they start one.

I think that being of that genre makes a fic... well, of that genre. o.o; That's all. I personally don't think that being of the "epic" genre predisposes a fic to be better, worse, or anything else compared to fics of any other genre.

...I'd rather feel your rathe (pfft, you spelt it wrong!) then read your dumb-dumb fik.

And we need something Jewish related as a prompt. Month after month it's all christian biased, even though we've only had one month and it was rain.

Hm.

And I need to fit some sort of fanfiction related topic into here in fear of getting an infraction from my own pair and getting banned again (the irony in that is spectatular!), so um...

What pokemon do you love to see in fanfics?

Wailord and Skitty. Seriously.

A Pikachu with the name of Andy. I lurve him to pieces. But he's mine!

This almost almost made me want to type an emoticon. Instead, I'll just waggle my finger and tell you "No, Scytheteen. No. Those beans were not for you!" In other words, that nearly treaded the line of good taste, but I'm not sure, since I hang around with people who cross that line all the time.

My, how things have changed since I've been here last...

Anyway, I don't know if I'll be continuing my main fic here (rewriting it is taking too much of my time) unless I can get moderator permission to post 40 chapters in quick-fire succession so I can leave the Big Green Forum (and all the noobs, flamers, and, most recently, plagiarists who I've had to deal with there).

Depending on April's prompt, I may have a one-shot for it.

Anyway, to answer some stuff:

What do you guys think of epic fics? You think having the fic as an epic genre makes it more deveolped, thought out, and better quality or is the epic genre a bit overated sometimes?
Depends, but if I went by personal experience with fics alone, my answer would be, "no". There are several "epic" fics (one of which I'm seriously considering stopping reading) where it's overhyped by the author as well as readers. And I've yet to find a fic where "epic" actually isn't synonymous with "horribly convoluted plot that nobody, not even the author, comprehends."

I'm willing to bet there are some that aren't over-rated but my search has failed miserably thus far. Then again, I'm not really aggressively hunting for new fics to read at this time, anyhow.

What do you think the new FFC prompt should be?
I'm partial to "Buick" myself.

What pokemon do you love to see in fanfics?
*looks at user-name* But I'd really like to see it portrayed in a "non-evil role" in some fic that is not written by me. So far, it's been hard to come by.

DO EET.

And if anyone complains, send them my way.

It's not fair for you to be stuck over in Green Lag Land where people treat you horribly (and I have no idea why), so if posting your fic quickly here will make you happier because you can move on, then fine. So do what you need to, DP. And if you have any concerns, questions, comments, let me know.

As for the change here? Astinus is the 2008 version of Hanako Tabris. She's badder, snarkier, and a lot more happier than before.

genres aren't overrated, only pieces within a genre are. It's the same with every genre really, and just like all of them, there can be some genuinely good ones, and some over-hyped stinkers (mind you, I speak of media in general, not so much fanfiction). I can agree that epics tend to be the most popular thing, and I'd say a lot, but not all, of my stories are epics themselves. I think they probably work best with longer-running stories, usually, and a good majority of anime and manga tend to follow a serial format (RPG games, likewise, are arguably the longest type of video games out there). With that said, it's probably natural for people to want a story that's expected to last a while, which could explain why the genre's so popular.

What do you think the new FFC prompt should be?

not participating, don't care.

Scarlet Weather March 30th, 2008 11:40 AM

The person who first called it a "smiley" was under the influence of LSD and thought it was part of a consciousness shift? I dunno.

More importantly, I think Astinus sounds like... I dunno, something out of a really cheesy fantasy novel. The kind that Eragon plagiarized from, but dismally failed. And it makes me think of an old guy sitting around dispensing sage wisdom to random members of the populace.

Jewishness for the April prompt? I won't be able to write anything without thinking 'HOLOCAUST! HOLOCAUST!' and envisioning the slaughter of millions of people in front of me while my sanity slowly erodes. (Seriously, I've been diagnosed as being slightly unstable mentally. Apparently I have issues about envisioning people in pain. 0.o)

Or I could write something about Ash and Latkes. That might work. XD

Er.... new topic quickly.

Are post-apocalyptic fics all the same? Discuss.

I'm starting to wonder. There seems to be two variations on the post-armageddon fic. One has everything going to pot and everyone is dying or dead around you. The other involves the world being restabilized before the fic begins, but personal freedoms have vanished or the world is compromised in some other way (Lois Lowry's The Giver is dedicated to a future of that sort, though we aren't told the events that led up to it.) The former seems to be the kind that shows up in fanfic form most often, and usually portrays a zero-future world in which every effort is hopeless. The question here is "that may make sense, but is the genre getting stale because there's nothing left to add?"

Scales March 30th, 2008 11:45 AM

Are post-apocalyptic fics all the same? Discuss

No I don't think so. I have read the Chrysalids and it is very different from Apocalyptic fics like I am legend. It takes place like 1000 years in the future where there are only just slight mutants after a nuclear holocaust. It really shows how religion has very bad consequences if taken way to seriously.

It all depends on who wrote it. If a better writer writes it you would notice the quality of the world being much better to read then if a beginner wrote it

Sydian March 30th, 2008 12:12 PM

Are post-apocalyptic fics all the same? Discuss.

Ah, in such cases as The Giver, which I hated immensely, then it's just plain weird. What was it now? Purple skies...orange grass. That's a completley new way to look at the future. O.o

For things such as I Am Legend, it certainly doesn't make me wanna get any injections anytime soon. Goodness, no. That scares me about the future. So, not all of these types of stories are the same. There's different interpretations of the future.

Astinus March 30th, 2008 1:04 PM

And Yamato-san, I'm the type of person who likes seeing posts without sexist remarks. I wonder if there's some chance that you could post without using any swears or variations of those words. But I guess not.

It's amazing the amount of people who complain about someone acting in a certain way, or something being run a certain way, yet they keep coming in contact with said person or said thing. The brilliant thing to do would be to leave and avoid the situation. For some people who volunteered to deal with people out of the goodness of her little black heart, they can't avoid situations. But other people have the choice.

And it seriously makes me wonder if anyone, aside from my friends, would have realized that I had a name change. Or did you all need me to tell you? Did you honestly think that they pulled some new member out of nowhere and gave them moderator powers? And how long would it have taken you to realize it if I never said anything? Sometimes, I seriously wonder if humans are just getting more stupid as time goes on.

Well, given the number of Christmas and Easter challenges (unless we count things like St. Valentine's Day and St. Patrick's Day, which, really, are only there for shipping and crack, respectively), I'll have to say absolutely. Anyone that isn't in the "everyone's written stories about these" groups. You know, legendaries, Pikachu family, Eevee family, Vulpix family, Torchic family (for some reason), that sort of thing.

For once, I'd like to see a trainer start out with a Wooper. I mean, let's face it. Given the trainers in the game, someone probably did.

And seconded on the Wailord and Skitty comment.

Taking films as an example, comparing Tank Girl to Resident Evil: Extinction (Yes, I've read the reviews.) just doesn't work, even though they're kind of on the same level. Yes, you have two broader categories (the dystopian fledgling society versus the "everyone is dead, so now we need to survive" concept), but a lot of the times, that's like trying to categorize countries into continents and only looking at the continent to form a generalization to cover the entire subgenre. That is, there may be a few key similarities between France and Germany, but if you actually look, they're really nothing alike.

In the same way, post-apocalyptic fiction may fall into either of those two categories, but there's also categories under that, depending on the variations in the plot themselves. While I don't often dapple in post-apocalyptic myself (as in, I've seen plenty of post-apocalyptic films but haven't read nearly enough in the genre), I think it's fairly safe to say that not all stories within the post-apocalyptic genre are basically "same plotline, different character names." After all, just look at the aforementioned comparison between Tank Girl and Resident Evil.

Complained, responded, called, barked, snapped -- the list is pretty long, actually.

Usually in writing, though, it's a good idea (or, at least, I was taught this in creative writing classes) to lessen your dependency on them. As in, you can say said a couple of times, as the character's emotions would already be implied by what they're actually saying or what they do (or look like) in the scene. For example, a person who stomps into a room and insults another character will obviously be angry, so most likely, their tone of voice will probably be louder and tenser than normal. The other words can be used but only when there's really no other way to imply their tone of voice (like "whispered" if a character is doing so in a public area).

There are quite a few that I always really like to see in fics, but my favorites to see are Snorunt, Glalie, Froslass, Wynaut, Wobbuffet, Nosepass, and Probopass. I also still want very much to see more of Voltorb and Electrode in fics.

Are post-apocalyptic fics all the same? Discuss.

I doubt it. I have a hard time believing there's any genre in which all the stories are the same, for that matter.

Astinus March 30th, 2008 3:12 PM

I should also warn against using the more "out-there" words on that list.

"Jubilations!" he effervesced. "My boyfriend can has hat now!"

Yeah, using "effervesced" as a dialogue tag will just make me "wtf" at the story. Unless your character was giving off bubbles. Then it's all right.

Some of those words aren't even real dialogue tags. I have never heard anyone "wink" a word before.

Nearly reminds me of the time someone thought "inconspicuous" was a verb. Have you inconspicuous today?

Incidentally, I just remembered an awesome writing prompt I was told about at a con panel this weekend. Not that I think we should definitely make another thread for it, but it's just this challenge that I thought would be cool to share:

Basically, take really bad summaries off FFNet. Write stories for them.

The example involved the summary "Hermione and Draco become Head Boy and Girl. Stuff happens," Hermione using a permanent gender change spell, and Draco deciding that he needs to explore his feminine side (by employing Eugene -- i.e. male!Hermione -- to teach him).

So, yes. This sort of challenge has the potential for being incredibly awesome. What do you all think?

I'm slightly disturbed here.

Anyway, not something I'd be doing anytime soon, but sounds interesting. Although, I wouldn't want to be prompted with that summary. X.x

Gummy March 30th, 2008 3:31 PM

Blazeshipping better not be on that list of retarded shippings. That ship found it's way into my story series.

The Harry Potter summary was only an example. I meant that we would look only in the Pokemon fandom for whatever material we can find. While I don't deny that Pokemon fics tend to be boring, Pokemon summaries can be hilarious if you do some digging. For example:

ash is boring so i replace him with someone more interestang- blackbeard the pirate

Yeah, uh, that one is serious, too.

For a less cracky example that will probably take a little more thinking to actually get a story for:

may goes to the swamp to find a talking politoed. what will she do if he asks her for a big favor?

You could do a lot with a summary, whether you lop off the shipping part of it or not. You don't even need to do a humor fic. It just needs to be inspired by the bad summary.

You people are making me want to ban all of you.

This Lounge got a few more pages because I merged the FFC discussion thread with the Lounge. Get over it.

Er...

Okay, well, I won't make the mistake of joking about your new username again... *sweatdrop*

And even if I didn't post here, I knew you were Hanako before, I just didn't have the time or motivation to comment on it before. If only because all posts that were by "Hanako Tabris" were now by "Astinus".

And that old sage thing was meant to be a compliment. Completely. I happen to like old sage guys. My Grandfather is an old sage guy. Only instead of advice about saving the world, he tells me how to dig fence posts (and more recently how to drive).

Er... now that I've finished babbling, I can move on with the topic...

What Pokemon do you like to see?

It's not so much the species as the personality. I like seeing Pokemon that deviate from the "norm" associated with their particular species (things like a Seaking with testosterone issues, for example). And I like flying types in general, provided their purpose in the story is not simply to either a) fly the main character from points A to B or b) POP TEH GIGANT BALLOONZORZ!!!!111!!!11!! But in terms of pure species, I'd have to say that I like fics that center around Zangoose or Pidgeot, because they rank as two of my all time favorites. And I admit, I have a soft spot for Pikachu as well, just so long as they aren't a clone of Ash's Pikachu and aren't being used as a "Mary-Sue" accessory.

Percy Thrillington March 30th, 2008 4:45 PM

Has anyone realised how active this thread is now that we can mess around a little? I quite like the new type of lounge we have. Yamato, you are really coming on to me as a sexist, it seems in every post you make you have to make fun of the feminine race somehow. Astinus and Jax, I have never seen such 1337 speak from you!

Moving on from tha fact that I can't come up with something smart to make people laugh, I'd really like the April Fan Fiction Challenge prompt to be Patrick Pitter. I really think we could all make great stories from that prompt. Oh, and I think that Saturn would be an absolutely beautiful prompt as well.

What Pokèmon do I like to see? Most Legendary Pokèmon, so long as they're used realistically and don't have God powers. And Pokèmon the don't just faint after they fall off a cliff, Pokèmon that die. I also enjoy Starmie, Raichu, Kingdra and long walks by the beach.

Saffire Persian March 30th, 2008 4:50 PM

I'd second long walks by the beach. *is a romantic at heart*

I dunno about Patrick Pitter, but I already have a lovely seed of an idea from the prompt "Saturn".

"Everyone likes to believe that Clefairy came from the moon. In truth, they came from Saturn." :p

Maybe I'm the only one here, but I didn't really feel like he was being sexist, given that ***** is a pretty specific insult. I did, however, think he was being fairly uncalled for here, considering:

A. Nothing prompted an out-and-out flame (which, really, calling someone an "uppity *****" without citing examples of times when she was being that might as well be called that). I mean, Astinus didn't say in her post before that, "Oh yeah, and Yamato-san, you're a dick," so I really don't see why it was necessary to attempt to incite a flamewar. (I realize he was stating an opinion, but there's just some levels you just don't stoop to.

B. There's been worse corruption elsewhere on Pokemon boards. I mean, Serebii mods have actually encouraged people to troll other boards, and certain staff members themselves (who shall remain nameless) are very quick to accuse and generally borderline flame. I know this because the target in one case was mine for the former, and I've gotten into "friendly arguments" with said staff members concerning the latter. You know one of those stories, Oni.

And even then, that's not the only board I've seen pretty bad staffing on. Smaller IF, Proboards, et cetera boards tend to be horrific, and I've been on larger boards (which also will remain nameless) where every thread ends up becoming one flame war after another.

I'm actually quite happy because I'm now half-way done with my parody fic, but now I know the next half I'll have little to zip writing because I'll be busy with university stuff for the next couple of weeks. >.>

To Gummy, there's one story at Serebii called "The House" by IceKing which is criticizing the 4th Gen's evolution line. XD And Jax, I actually think making stories out of bad summaries sounds like a fun idea. Maybe I might try out that May and Politoed story. XD

Oh man Saffire, now you made me want to do either a one shot or put that somewhere in my fic. XD

As for that apocalyse question, pretty much what everyone said of how there's two categories to them, though I like seeing more of the everyone is dead so the survivors must survive kind of stories because I read a lot of the society type stories already. As soon as the apocalyse story is interesting, has great characters, and good quality, all is good.

Percy Thrillington March 30th, 2008 5:52 PM

Actually, just out of curiosity, what do you people think of the current fan fics going around various forums? Seen anything interesting ones?

You gotta love the fact that Jax edited her first post so that in the fictional scenario, Astinus slagged Yamato by being a sexist first.

No one's gonna understand that sentence except for Jax.

Astinus March 30th, 2008 6:21 PM

To be quite honest, I'm never the one to provoke any sort of response from anyone. Even in real life, I just wander through, never talking to anyone first unless I have some need to. It's always other people who interrupt me and start something.

And I also have the philosophy that "I'll treat you the same way you treat me". If you're nice to me, then you get the happy side of me back at you. (This is why all of my friends that I made had stepped up first to open communications. I am always perfectly content to never make human contact.) If, however, you feel the need to start some sort of war with me for no reason, then...well, let's say that I enjoy wars of words. But I'll always sit there and wonder what it is about the other person that makes them get some sort of thrill of following me around wherever I go and starting something.

This is all really just to say that the only way that you get me to be angry at you is if you wish it upon yourself. Otherwise, if you want be to me nice to you, then you'll get the nice side; if you want me to leave you alone, then that's also fine, since I also prefer being left alone.

Quote:

It's called "having fun". The way we've been acting is the way that I wanted to see this board acting. Sure, we screw around, but we keep it under the rules and laugh while doing so. It's not my problem that other people have to step in and ruin fun for others.

Heck, I was actually enjoying coming to PC during the fun times, because I just knew that there wouldn't be any trouble to deal with. I could actually come here and relax, laugh, have fun. (Yes, I know that I shouldn't dread coming here, especially since I volunteered to be a moderator. But just once I want some good times in my life to counter the bad.)

And this was probably way more than anyone ever wanted to know about me.

Quote:

Maybe I'm the only one here, but I didn't really feel like he was being sexist, given that ***** is a pretty specific insult.
You're not the only one, Jax. It wasn't sexist. Just something rude that he had to get in to say to me for no reason. But you are right that it was uncalled for, since like I said, I didn't provoke any attack by striking first. All that I did was remark to someone completely different, and didn't mention him at all, that I had gotten a name change. (Since DP479 and I haven't talked in a while, and I wanted to let it be known that I did get a name change and a slight personality change.)

Actually, the post was edited twice. The first and last version really did have the word "dick" in here. The second I thought I'd try to replace the word with something that I thought would be censored... but turns out isn't on PC. XD (Seriously, what?)

As to Astinus on her personality, yeah, I always felt that you were the sort who didn't say anything someone didn't deserve, but then again, you remind me of a lot of other people (like Farla) who are mistaken as being harsh, when really, they're only being frank and adaptive to the social environment, so to speak.

That and, really, I can tell by your posts. As I've said before, I don't recall any time when you flamed Yamato-san specifically, and you certainly didn't before he came in. It's just not fair that he should be the one to flame you. It doesn't really stick up for the little guy at all if one barges into a conversation with guns blasting when everyone else's guns were taken at the door, you know? Or, well, to put it simply and without the abuse of metaphors, it doesn't help your cause if you look like you're the one doing the mudslinging. There are better ways to say that you object to someone personally. Like civil PMs or a polite, "Excuse me, but I think that's uncalled for" in a thread.

Admittedly, I had to Google it. Apparently, he's a character over at an RPG Oni participates in. Yeah, not all of us actually venture into the roleplaying forum, but I decided humoring is the best way to deal with humor. (Although out of curiosity, who got the Pitter reference without cheating?)

well, the thing is, I never really saw you with the name change until you posted in "What makes a good villain?" In fact, looking at your post history, you were pretty much absent in this thread for most of the month of March until that "seal of approval" was brought up. Also, it's not like I always scroll down far enough to see the names of the mods in this section to tell when one of them (or rather, the only one here) has gotten a name change. Were you expecting everybody to do scroll down to the bottom at some point and notice, or maybe for everybody to look back on your previous posts and notice a different name in place? Here's an idea: instead of insulting my intelligence, as well as the intelligence of other members around here, why not use some common sense of your own?

Saffire Persian March 30th, 2008 11:03 PM

You know, Yamato-san, maybe you could do the mature thing and let things die, instead of posting a reply? Maybe? You seem to just want to start up some kind of flame war. If you insist on aruging, you could, I dunno, take it to PM. I for one don't enjoy reading your "I have been wronged, ill-treated, and horribly misinterpreted!" posts. Or perhaps you enjoy spectators? This ain't Jerry Springer, Ladies and Gentleman.

txteclipse March 31st, 2008 12:24 AM

This thread got roughly six pages longer in one day. Permission to be mystified?

Anyways, I dug way the heck back to a prompt I wanted to answer.

What pokemon do you love to see in fanfics?

Latias, primarily. Despite being my favorite pokemon, I feel she translates well into the fanfiction realm. The reasons for this are many, but some major ones are that she's empathic, she can fly really fast, and she's a dragon. This usually leads to her being a good character, at least in my eyes.

Close seconds are Latios for nearly the same reasons and Absol. I like the latter because of his aura of misunderstanding: he goes to towns to warn of impending disaster, but is seen as a harbinger of said disasters because of this trait. He's also downright cool.

Scytheteen March 31st, 2008 3:16 AM

Yeah, Jax, I don't know what you're talking about. There was no Mewthree on Scytheteen action ever. ;;

*snatches video while she's not looking*

And as I'm too lazy to answer any topic in here because I don't feel look going back and copying and pasting, I'll just come up with my own topic:

What genre do you prefer to see in pokemon fanfics?

Oh, I'm sorry. Was that a quote? Because usually in an argument, people actually quote examples from the source material and analyze it to back up their arguments, rather than just state a title and expect the reader to go look it up.

Not to mention her responses in that thread are, from what I can tell, really no more biting than the ones I've seen you put out in this forum. You're going to have to work harder to convince me she's a bad person. And even then, you still came in this thread with guns blasting, so you still are making yourself look bad if you don't at least use quotes to give your reasoning for why you need to need to be so aggressive. =/

Like everyone else, as long as its good, then I'm cool with it although I have a soft spot for literature, drama, and mystery...and also anything that has police officers and/or FBI/CIA agents as characters. XD

And Oni Raichu: there are times too that I lose inspiration but then I get them back by rereading certain scenes of my story and then my mind clicks as to why I wrote that piece in the first place. That's probably just me though.

Isaac Gravity March 31st, 2008 12:36 PM

...

What genre do you prefer to see in pokemon fanfics?

No specific objections, if I wanna read it, I'll read it. Though I tend to avoid romance...

What Pokemon do you like to see?

No objections again. I expect to see starters and Legendaries a lot since they hold instant appeal points and seem easy to work with. (Though not too sure about the last part on Legendaries, though I do like seeing them live up to the "legend" part by being omnipotent of sorts and/or showing why they're considered the creature who (insert tibits of info from the Pokedexs of the main games)

What do you guys think of epic fics? You think having the fic as an epic genre makes it more deveolped, thought out, and better quality or is the epic genre a bit overated sometimes?

Hmm... some fics feel way more awesome than most do, I'll admit that much... but... It's still all a matter of interpretation anyway...

Wait, epic has its own genre? That's kinda--

For the road: "Maturity" is nothing more than a word used by those who wish to attack others while still looking refined themselves. One can be a fairly calm, easygoing individual but once angered (rightfully or not) they'll then be labeled immature or childish regardless of the degree of anger displayed. And one's temperament, especially when they lose the ability of being understanding (or just feel they don't have to be) really can't be helped. Everyone's different after all, the different personas you meet on the internet proves this.

I can understand the concept of "keeping appearances" for a certain set, it's something we all do be it out "having to" or maintaining a said standard your supposed to uphold, but maturity as whole, especially on the 'net, is a word abused and taken severely out of context like the word "noob". With that said, given a lot of that commentary that stood outside the argument at hand that guy more than enough reason to come in guns a blazing.

Nothing wrong with hot-bloodedness but the situation is supposed to be left dead, sorry about that...

What genre do you prefer to see in pokemon fanfics?
Journey fics are a favorite as long as they're executed well (i.e., no Ash clones). But I'm fairly broad; however I'd rather not see the following:
*Anything involving Ash unless it's mocking him.
*Oddball shippings (AshxRandomTree, BlackbeardxChatot, etc.)
*Fics where the trainers have magical powers, especially the all-too-common "4/5 of Captain Planet powers" of earth, water, air/wind, and fire. Honestly, we have Pokemon that cover all four of them. If you're going to give your trainers special powers, make them something that Pokemon can't do, like the ability to control GMC Yukons or the power to balance your checking account.

Wow, this turned into more of,

As for continuing my story here, I'm still debating it, but every time I get onto the Green Lagger, I'm more and more convinced to just do it.

Anything to do with PokeSpecial. Mainly shipping fics...but if it has Silver, shipping or not, I'm readin'. You know it. ;D

What genres do you prefer NOT to see in fanfics?

-Trainer wakes up late, goes and gets a Pokemon from Prof. (insert name).
-Random shipping like my 'AshxRandomTree'...but then again, I'd read...just to see what they'd do.
-Nasty, disgusting stories where people don't know how to convey what they're talking about, such as shipping stories involving sex...you wouldn't believe some of the things I've read. X.x
-The Mystery of the Pika Jewel. Jax told me it sounded like a porno, and I must admit, the title shares striking resemblances.

Gummy March 31st, 2008 1:48 PM

What genre do you prefer to see in pokemon fanfics?

I have a soft spot for PMD and Pokemorph fics (considering my first fic was a combination of both). I'm also starting to enjoy Journey fics, but at DP479 said, it has to be executed well.

What genres do you prefer NOT to see in fanfics?

Anything that focuses on or included the main characters from the anime. If a fic even mentions the name Ash and how he was one of the greatest Pokemon masters, I stop reading immediately. However, if I ever come by a fic that continues the story of Richie or Gary (my favorite rivals), I'd be hooked on the spot.

So.... anyway, I'll just go out on a limb and ask Yamato how disagreeing with him (and doing it in a civilized manner) somehow qualifies Astinus as a curse target. And seconded on the quoting the source material thing, because I just spent three-fourths of this school year learning how to do that effectively for my forensics matches. Great Zeus, this is getting annoying.

So, as to what genres I like, anything that isn't "random vampires in the Pokemon world/Satoshi's brother who owns thousands of Pokemon suddenly arrives!" Romance is great, but only if done well. And I support Pokemon x Human Character shippings, but detest any fic that either A) goes graphic (does everyone equate love with "doing the nasty" except me?) or B) is written in such a way that the horrid treatment of grammar causes me to rip out my own lungs to avoid the pain. o.o

Dragonfree March 31st, 2008 4:37 PM

What genres do you prefer NOT to see in fanfics?
I'm not a fan of anything that is exclusively romance. Love and lust can work very well as a part of the development of characters and plot, but I just really can't find romance anywhere near interesting enough on its own to write or read a whole story that has no other point to it than getting two characters to shag/kiss/have mushy conversations.

I'm also not really interested in the animé main characters, and that combined with the above means I prefer not to touch shipping fics with a ten-foot-pole and can't help finding it a real shame they constitute half of the Pokémon fanfic out there. Other predominantly animé character fics, eh, maybe I'll read it if the plot is very, very good, but as I like character-centered stuff and the animé main characters are just, well, rather shallow and uninteresting, I generally don't even look at animé-centered fics.
