What genres do you prefer NOT to see in fanfics?
Well, pretty much I'm okay with every genre though I'll just say a few of my least favorites -Science Fiction: For some odd reason I'm not into Science Fiction that much. Probably because I'm not a science person. :X -Romance. If it's the central genre, then it won't hold my interest that much. True, I read a few shipping fics but only if there's really good or holds my interest. And speaking of anime and shipping, I'm okay with reading fics centered around or have the anime characters. Sometimes I'm interested in seeing the writers still have them in character but at the same time add a bit more spice to them. And I don't mind reading shipping fics but it's just that it always seems ninety percent if there's anime characters they'll be a shipping somewhere. O.o |
What genre do you prefer to see in pokemon fanfics?
Umm... I can generally read just about anything. I do like pokémon POV fics and stories that center around death and friendship/relationships between people (in a totally non-cheesy way, BtW). What genres do you prefer NOT to see in fanfics? Not really a genre, but I dislike script fics for some reason. Not because they're bad, per se, I just don't like to read them. |
Oni Raichu, for inspiration I do one or all of the following:
1. Talk about what you want to do next. Find someone that won't care about spoilers, and simply talk at them about what you want to do. Saying things out loud is better than having said things in your head, for some reason. It cements them in your mind and allows you to focus more in detail on your writing, I guess. If you simply have things in your head, you will get stuck rehashing the same couple of chapter elements and will never be able to fully flesh out the chapter. 2. Re-read what you have done. Seriously. I was extremely skeptical about doing this, as I figured that I knew what I had written and didn't need to reread my work. Well guess what? Rereading does two things: it allows you to find plot elements you may not remember that you put in (believe me, this happens a lot, especially if you're me), and it also may actually re-inspire you. You'll basically be reading a story perfectly tailored to your liking, which may jump start the creative process. 3. Read other works in your genre. If you don't have any material going into your brain, it's hard to have anything coming out. You also learn what has been done before, so you can avoid re-inventing the wheel. Also, you may be able to implement something (slightly or majorly tweaked, of course) from another author. For instance, I started writing the Eon Chronicles while reading Terry Brooks' Voyage of the Jerle Shannara trilogy: he primarily writes epics that have a heavy emphasis on character development, and I liked that, so I'm using that formula as the base of my fic. 4. Stimulate your brain. This includes everything from listening to music to walking around outside to taking a shower. I don't really know why the last one works, but it does. Try to do things that get you thinking, and avoid things that absorb your attention like the plague. Things grouped into the latter category would be mindlessly watching t.v., mindlessly playing video games, and the like. Some t.v./video games is good, as long as it makes you think or otherwise inspires you (Nature shows are good but sometimes slightly boring, movies with lots of academy awards are usually good, and RPGs can be good). Hope those help. |
Alright, seeing as we're all gathered here tonight...
What is your favorite oneshot/ ongoing fanfic on this forum or outside it outside your own work? No contest for me: "The Ties that Bind" by our very own Saffire Persian is still my favorite one shot, ever. It helped that I read it right after my dog died. And as for ongoing fanfics, I happen to have taken a liking to a certain fic that sounds remarkably like a certain play by a certain dead Englishman who was certainly a good writer. For certain. Yeah, I made a bet that I'd use the word "certain" or its derivative forms exactly five times today. I win. |
What is your favorite oneshot/ ongoing fanfic on this forum or outside it outside your own work?
My favorite One-shot of all time that I have saved on my computer is Saffire Persian's, "The Ties that Bind." Reading this simple story opened my eyes that fanfiction isn't just a way to show how much you love a certain fiction, but a whole different type of beauty in itself. Then there's Chibi Pika's "The Legendarian Chronicles," which after reading, convinced me that if she could make me smile while reading her works, I also want to make others smile while reading what I write. I hope to one day create that sensation in at least one person that I got while reading these two masterpieces. |
I liked our very own Dragonfree's Scyther's Story quite a bit. I haven't read much in terms of Pokemon fiction, but that was certainly a well done piece.
EDIT: And The Ties That Bind. Just read it. Sapphire Persian...you rock. |
What is your favorite oneshot/ ongoing fanfic on this forum or outside it outside your own work?
Defiantly Saffire's "The Ties That Bond". That story basically what got me started fanfiction. ^^ Also, Astinus' parody fic she posted here as that story inspired me to finally decide to go ahead with that parody (speaking of which, should do the next chapter tonight XD) Outside of forums, in Pokemasters forums there's this one shot called "Stains". It uses a variety of writing styles (from letter writing to different POVs to script writing, I'm not kidding). Also, there's an aura of mystery to it. ^^ |
What is your favorite oneshot/ ongoing fanfic on this forum or outside it outside your own work?
Best One-shot I've read? So far, purple_drake's "The Taming of the Northern Wind." It really got me thinking about an oft-ignored game NPC and the Pokemon of his obsession in a whole new light. As for best ongoing fic? I really can't say, as every one I consider myself a "fan" of has its own standout qualities that draws me to keep reading them. It's difficult to judge or compare them because they each excel at something different. |
What is your favorite oneshot/ ongoing fanfic on this forum or outside it outside your own work?
Out of OneShots, Saffire Persian's is very nice. It's poetic and I really enjoyed reading it. For ongoing fan fics, I'll say bobandbill's The Retelling of Pokemon Colosseum. Although, I'm a little behind in reading it...my school blocked it now. -.- And now...here goes that movie about WW2 I have to make...growl. And I'm hungry. But it's taco salad day...Silver likey. <3 EDIT: -spazz- Holy cow! When did I become a moderator?!?! O_o It's April Fool's Day...that must be it... |
Heh-heh, Asty, now I have the power to control you!
*gives 1000000 infractions* Just kiding mah luvly pear, I luv u. *givs hugg* What is your favorite oneshot/ ongoing fanfic on this forum or outside it outside your own work? I liked Breezy's story "Who Killed Brendan Birch." As for one-shots, I remember some guy (I believe his name was Ranger O'Brien) who made a story called 'Jump'. That was my favorite. |
Ah, a sense of power overwhelms me.
Anyway, my friend was reading the written version of Just A Brother and suddenly screamed, "Whoa!! They took a shower together?!" and followed with, "Why's Gold not wearing pants?!". I found this quite hilarious, considering I never implied that into the story. Makes me wanna go back and add it in there just for fun...heh heh. As for the Who Killed Brendan Birch, I might have to take a look at that. :D |
Quote:
And Saffire...I completely misspelled your name back there...I apologize for my epic fail. Hmmm...I'm a mod now, apparently. I wonder if that's superficial for April Fool's Day or if I've actually been endowed with all the powers that being a mod implies...*goes to check out powers* EDIT: My powers are zilch. Ho hum. |

About the shower part...that was...odd. Even being a little supportive of PreciousMetalShipping, it's just kinda creepy...but I think that was on my part the way I wrote the sentence. O.x |
My favorite fanfics ever:
- The Ties that Bind by Saffire Persian. Gee, I'm starting off unoriginal, aren't I? I don't think there's anyone who wasn't touched by this. It was just so perfectly built up. Everything in it felt right. I've read it five or six times over and I cry every time. - Me and My Flame by whatshername, an old (as in R/B/Y-era) completed 53-chapter story centering around two Charizard but with an array of side characters and a captivating plot. It just has so many memorable characters and scenes. It's one of the "omg trainers are ebil!" genre (although it doesn't come across as as preachy about it as some "oh no I got captured and now I will never see my family again and curse upon this horrible human who stuffed me into this horrible ball angst angst" fics I've seen), and I've never much liked that, but it makes it work. It also holds the title of being quite literally the only long piece of fanfiction that I have liked enough to read more than once in its entirety. (I've read it three times, in fact.) - Tangled Web by a guy who keeps changing his name but while he was posting that fic on TPM I knew him as ChicRocketJames. One of the most awesome writing styles ever; it's discontinued, but oh my, it was such a genius fic while it lasted. Basically it was a trainer fic about this guy who had his trainer license revoked when he was a kid and therefore steals one from a guy he finds murdered and mutilated by a Houndoom in a forest (along with the guy's Torchic, only one of the several awesomely well-developed Pokémon characters of the fic). The dialogue was often hilarious, the style readable and witty, and the characters vivid and alive. Unbelievably, the author has disowned it and removed it from his FanFiction.Net account, but it can still be found on TPM. - The Last of Its Kind by the same guy as Tangled Web. Basically a one-shot about this guy who's traveling through a desert to reach the next Gym in his journey when a Pokémon called Toxitrice, thought to be extinct, comes along and murders first his Absol, then all his other Pokémon in their sleep, and finally him. The sheer morbidity is to die for, especially one particular line that's still one of my favorite quotes from any fanfiction ever. I've read this over quite a few times, too. Yeah. I really need to read more, though. :/ |
Sounds like you read enough, Dragonfree. O.o
No more moderating. ;-; Anyway, I thought of something as I was writing 2nd period...is there anything wrong with having someone not eat throughout the fan fic? I mean this in two ways: 1. They haven't eaten in 2-7 days and have openly admitted to it. 2. Not eating throughout the fan fic, because there are some time skips and eating isn't relevant to the story, but the fact that it is relevant to the character living makes you wonder. Anything wrong in that? Just a thought. |
Quote:

Quote:
It's not revealing a lot...just the fact that he wasn't hungry for two days. O_o And no, this inspiration wasn't from myself, it's actually from people around me. My other friend pointed out some things that weren't implied either. xD He asked if Gold and Silver always stayed at each other's houses. He also asked if they were watching each other get dressed...and in fact, I never said that they weren't. ;D I'll go back and fix that before it's posted. |
Quote:
2. I wouldn't worry about it too much. There are lots of mundane things we have to do as humans that would make for very boring filler. Most readers would just assume that your character eats/sleeps/change clothes during time skips unless (as in #1) they explicitly say they haven't done so. |

What problems did you face when you first began writing fanfiction?
Ah. That's a good one. Rushing, spelling, definitions, grammar(still do it, too), typos, the list goes on. I'm only on my second fan fic. Actually, I need to be posting the last chapter to my first...which is horrible, and it's not on here...I want to forget I wrote it. But, I really hate commas in dialogue. Serverly. Bobandbill always gets me for it. xD |
What problems did you face when you first began writing fanfiction?
I started a really young age. And I usually came across the problems of proper grammar and staying in the same person. |

What problems did you face when you first began writing fanfiction?
-Releasing chapters too fast without proofreading or spellchecking. -Not separating paragraphs as much. -Little detail or description. -Coming up with plots for the chapter. |
What problems did you face when you first began writing fanfiction?
*Thinking of stuff to have my character do to stray from the "game clone" plot that seems to bore everybody *At first, short chapters - long enough to be in the rules, but not long enough to contain enough events for a real "chapters" *And of course, having to deal with the fact that most forums don't have an "equation editor" - Because of that, I can't put in the integral signs and summation symbols that I would have really wanted to. But since my fic is based around a region that I had previously created for a forum-based RPG, mapping that out was NOT an issue;) Quote:

What problems did you face when you first began writing fanfiction?
Heh, my problems are kind of different from everybody else's. I had very evidently foreignerish grammar at times and misspellings here and there, but nothing that made it unreadable, and I instinctively knew approximately how to paragraph and punctuate dialogue just from reading enough books. However, I had a major problem with getting the plot to make any sense in general. I didn't think anything through, spontaneously stuffed about twenty hilariously stupid legendary Pokémon I'd made up into it and wrote in a ridiculous number of random plot holes and didn't wonder about the consequences of anything I did in general. I'm still today trying to clean up the mess that is the plot of The Quest for the Legends. |
Quote:
Also, because I didn't know how much I was actually writing, my stuff usually came out as one- or two-page POSes that were done in about an hour sitting in front of the computer. Some of my pieces today still are one- or two-page POSes, but I tended to be slightly less descriptive OR overly descriptive to the point where I'd mention irrelevant details. Which brings up my most major problem: I HAD MARY SUES. Okay, yes, I admit it. I had Mary Sues. I wrote so many it's not even funny. Some of them were inserts of my friends. Some of them were me with prettier hair (oh, my love for purple hair back then) and the pants of my favorite character at the time. (There was one for Ash, one for James, one for Tracey, and somehow, Bill was a pedophile. *headdesk*) Some even had uber special POWERS -- mostly, psychic abilities and uncanny knacks for screwing with reality. It was not a proud era of my life, but at least I know now what I didn't know then. Storylines tended to be hit and miss. Sometimes, I came up with interesting storylines (like a very early work of mine where Ash's Pikachu turned out to be the reincarnation of his father... which is a storyline I still like, even though I don't like any of the rest of the work and thank the gods that people actually took it as a humor fic), but most of the time, I liked to have my characters angst. I still do, but back then, I had very little grasp of key concepts like "plausibility" and "in-character." I won't go into examples because a lot of them are exceedingly painful to remember because they're so outlandish they're nearly comedies. I really didn't know how to do darkfic as a teenager. I really didn't. And yet, I tried and tried again to the point where most of my fics were pretty much that. Or crappy parodies and script fics. Okay, I didn't know how to do any genre decently. |
@Jax- What's 'Mary Sue'? Sounds like a country hick. X.x They sound bad...so I commend you for admitting to it. -patpat-
|
What problems did you face when you first began writing fanfiction?
-Grammar, tenses being the biggest problem. I'm getting better at it though tenses are still my problem and also I tend to have awkward sentences. -Description. It would be either listy or not enough. I managed to fix that problem somewhat, though my description tend to be not enough in a few places here and there. -Sometimes I tend to go a bit too fast during the proofreading process and not looking it over a few times before I post it or send it to my beta reader. |

Also, yes, storylines tend to be cliche because the author tends to not think outside the box, so to speak. Mary Sues tend to happen because authors aren't creative enough to work with boundaries like, say, developed characters with developed personalities -- or, for that matter, the laws of the natural world. It's possible, though, to have a storyline that isn't a cliche and still end up with a Mary Sue. (For example, I once read a Sue profile for a character in a story centering around the Pokemon world's CIA. Yes, you read that correctly. CIA.) Unfortunately, for the Pokemon fandom, this usually happens less frequently than in most other fandoms. If you'd like a clearer definition, for once, Wikipedia has an excellent article. I also highly recommend going through a list of Pokemon Mary Sues, if only because it provides hilarious examples. |
What problems did you face when you first began writing fanfiction?
Probably a far few too many mistakes end up in my work when I started (less than a year ago...) - have being going through it now in the reposting and fixing the many errors I discovered... mostly grammer and that. Oh, and the use of commas. I didn't really know anything about those rules to begin with - just the basic idea. I guess now I start to go on about that too... Also, maybe a lack of description - although my story really isn't focusing on that, as it isn't the point of it. Have been considering adding a bit more in places however, when i have some time for it. Somethings are a little more 'bare' and less 'flowy' in the eariler chapters than the latter ones I've noticed, such as how events are described. Quote:
Here's another question: What 4th-gen Pokemon do you see to be used more than others in fics? I'd have to say Lucario/Riolu, Gallade, and the starters. |
What problems did you face when you first began writing fanfiction?
Being a perfectionist. I announced my fan fiction in December, first chapter wasn't posted until January, which isn't that bad when you come to grasps with reality and figured out that I still haven't posted chapter two. I enjoy editing. Quote:

What 4th-gen Pokemon do you see to be used more than others in fics?
All the starters, Riolu, and any legendary. It's annoying, really. I've been using Honchkrow...but that's only because Silver has a Murkrow, and I figured it's time to evolve. That and I've suddenly fallen in love with Honchkrow. <3 |
Quote:
Anyways, as the 4th Gen is the newest, I don't have a problem with anyone using them in their fics. However, I have seen a few stories with trainers getting Gible as a starter, setting up the stage for a Mary-sue/Gary-stu character. |

About the legendaries, I should've said I don't like to see them used the wrong way. In annoying 'OMG its liek sooper p0werfull!!1111!!! CONTROL U [email protected][email protected]!111' ways. (Oh wow, did it just make a link to all that junk I posted? xD) Quote:

What 4th-gen Pokemon do you see to be used more than others in fics?
Well, as far as non legendaries, Riolu, Lucario, Starters, and that's it. I tend to use underused Pokemon in my facts, despite the fact that Riolu and Lucario are key to my fic. |

What problems did you face when you first began writing fanfiction?
Hmm. Description was a big one. My first one-shot... well, I just re-read it a couple hours ago and realized the battle had almost no description at all. But, I've been given positive comments on description so I'm glad I've improved. Tense change is also something I struggled with, and still do. I tend to write in present tense when everything is supposed to be in past tense, and I hardly notice until I've written a good chunk of stuff. But I do know how to fix it, at least. What 4th-gen Pokemon do you see to be used more than others in fics? Hmm. Starters (this goes for every generation, though), Lucario (which Gummy has convinced me to love very much with his fic already <3), and, finally, Weavile. Weavile is awesome, though, so no complaints there. |
What 4th-gen Pokemon do you see to be used more than others in fics?
Besides the legendaries and Lucario, I've been seeing a few fics with the Shinx family. So far the fourth generation Pokemon I've used are Monferno from a one shot of mine, Drifblm in "Nothing, Everything", and a couple bug types also in "Nothing, Everything" that I won't say. In my parody fic though, I'll use Shinx, Starvia, the starters, and the legendaries. |
What problems did you face when you first began writing fanfiction?
I can't really remember much about when I first started writing fanfiction... ^^; The earliest thing that I wrote that I can remember was this Simpsons story I did when I was about seven or eight. I don't recall much about it, but what I do remember is... yeah. XD; First of all, it had a pretty lame title if you ask me. I think I literally just called it The Simpsons Book. XD Second, pretty much the only things that even remotely made it a "Simpsons book" (emphasis on "remotely" XD) were 1.) the pictures of Simpsons characters that I'd cut out of a TV Guide and taped to the cover and 2.) the fact that the characters in the book happened to share the names of the members of the Simpson family. Third, I'm sure it was as lacking in the quality of the writing and level of description and character development as the other early stories I wrote that I remember. As I recall, they were all pretty much "____ happened. Then ____ happened. ____ said '____', and ____ said '____'. And then ____ happened. *story continues on in this fashion for a few more pages*" Sounds positively riveting, doesn't it? XP I'm sure that the grammar, vocabulary, and plots of my early attempts at fanfiction left something to be desired, too. XD; What 4th-gen Pokemon do you see to be used more than others in fics? Lucario and Shinx (as well as Shinx's evos) are the ones I seem to be finding more than any others. |
I don't remember seeing any fics with the Shinx line. O_o
Wouldn't it be great if someone wrote a fic and started with Magikarp? :D |
I did that once, but the fic was so depressingly bad that I stopped writing it.
Which brings me to... What problems did you face when you first start writing fanfiction? I'm still facing it, actually: the inability to discipline myself to keep writing. I can't force myself to sit down and write a little bit every night, mostly because writing is a relatively recent interest of mine. Actually, that reminds me: I'm scrapping an entire half of a chapter of my latest fanfic, because I've decided that the secondary main character I wanted to introduce has slowed the whole thing down and didn't really bring out anything in the primary main character that I couldn't express in some other manner. So I'll be posting a shortened version of that, hopefully soon, which means I can motivate myself to actually type (and finish) chapter three. What fourth-generation Pogeymanz have u ben seein in fics? Lucario, starters, Shinx line... I haven't actually used any (besides a token Weavile Cameo) in my own fic because I happen to like previous generations better. (Pidgeot pawns ur puny Starly/Tailow) |

Somebody actually did write about a Magikarp as sa starter or something. It was by a person named Renegade over at SPPF.
What problems did you face when you first start writing fanfiction? When I first started, it was getting canon characters in-character. What 4th-gen Pokemon do you see to be used more than others in fics? Besides the starters themselves, the Luxio line is a definite. Lucario stuff as well, annd I would imagine mentions of Arcseus are quite common. |
I don't remember seeing any fics with the Shinx line. O_o
Earlier part of my fic had a Shinx and later a Luxio. |
What problems did you face when you first began writing fanfiction?
I had it all. Bad grammar, Mary Sues, no description, no good characterization of canon characters, no plots, zero organization, bad handwriting, no discipline, legendaries popping up for no reason. Yes, if you say something bad about fanfiction, most likely I had it in my old fics. I still have them lying around somewhere, so if I can get my scanner working, you may see how horrible I really was. What 4th-gen Pokemon do you see to be used more than others in fics? I don't read a lot of fanfiction anymore, so I can't say. I do remember, however, that there was an abundance of Lucario running around. Do not get me wrong. I love Lucario. It's just that there are many other Pokemon out there that can be used. Unless the Pokemon is needed to fulfill a particular role, like Gummy's fic. (Did you enjoy your shameless promotion, friend?) Quote:
Just as a piece of somewhat good news, my fanfic is now in version 6.2 (yes, 6.2 copies of it flew around at some point in my room), and being rewritten over to a "clean" unedited copy. |
My fic has a character with two Eeveelutions... in Espeon and Umbreon. Ony because my story IS based on Pokemon Colosseum, in which the main character has those Pokemon. Not to mention that the character is already an established trainer to boot, and haven't had any complaints of his character thus far, so I think I'm out of the woods... Hurrah for parodies... of sorts...
Out of the last three stories I have looked at, the was a shiny Charmander, and a shiny Sneasal (same story as what 'Silver' (;)) read). BTW you have nice pictures in your sig... |

The only reason Eevee and Shinies have been branded as a "big no-no" is because those people who do think up those Mary-Sues tend to use them--it's a trademark. But a person letting their character have one automatically certainly isn't a reason to cry "SUE!" on them, just like it was foolish in the olden days for people to proclaim that a person was a witch just because he or she had a black cat. [And, for the record, not all witches are bad, either, if you get my drift]. The results, in fact, are pretty much the same as it was back in those witch-hating days: people get their characters called Sues for no reason save the fact they have a shiny and/or Eevee and are burned at the stakes because of it. That's rather wrong in my opinion. You are to judge the fiction you're reading by how it's written, not what pokémon a character has. |

My sig? Thanks...I like the trombone... Oh yeah, something that's been bothering me. If your characters are flying to another city, would the description of the three hour trip be nesscesary? It might not be three hours...I mean, in the games you zip to point A, but this is writing, so it's gotta take longer. I'm assuming Viridian to Vermilion by flying Mantine and Honchkrow would be three hours, and if I'm wrong correct me. But, would I need to describe the trip? I don't intend on anything happening during this flight, so I wasn't sure. It just sounds irrelevant to me. Quote:

Yeah Silver, she pretty much hits the nail there. For example, purple drake's fic has the trainer got Eevee but the story is well written and the characters are developed. Me, I don't mind trainers having Eevee or shiny as long as both the trainers and Pokemon are well developed and the writing is good. In fanfiction news, one more chapter left for my parody fic! My question:
What Pokemon do you have as the "lead" Pokemon in your fic? In the games, everybody has that "lead" Pokemon that they always use. What Pokemon would you like to see getting a lead role in fan fictions? To answer my question, my lead Pokemon is the Gallade evolution family. Currently, my character's lead Pokemon has ran away from him (earlier chapter) and won't be seen until the current volume. I enjoy portraying Ralts and Kirlia in an emotional fashion, since they, in my opinion, tend to be emotional. |

Before, I had either Cyndaquil or Totodile for my first fic, and then Pikachu for my later fics. But after reworking my character a bit, I found that Ralts fit the role I needed for a starter Pokemon. (My Ralts, however, is portrayed differently from yours, TurtleKing. Mine is immature, loud, and lazy. He's different from any other Ralts I've seen in fanfiction.) I am looking forward to my next fic, where one of the main Pokemon is going to be a Rattata. I've always held a special place in my heart for the little rodent, and just had to stick one into my fic. |

What Pokemon do you have as the "lead" Pokemon in your fic? In the games, everybody has that "lead" Pokemon that they always use. What Pokemon would you like to see getting a lead role in fan fictions?
It depends on the fiction entirely. In Metamorphosis a Caterpie takes the lead. In "Loyalty", it's a Growlithe. In "Chance", "Loyalty's" sequel, a Meowth takes shares the limelight. In "The Ties that Bind", it's a Charizard; "Anamnesis", a Ralts (as she evolves); "Dividing the Bones" a, well, Cubone. In Finding Courage, there's a Growlithe, Luxio, and a few others. As to what pokémon I'd like to see take a lead role? No idea. I'm pretty content with whatever pokémon a person choses to use. |

What Pokemon would you like to see getting a lead role in fan fictions? Seeing as DI doesn't have any Pokemon Trainers, this answer applies to SN: I chose an Absol to be the leading Pokemon in this fic for two reason. The first being that you don't usually see Absol in fics and the second is their ability to sense disaster and how it ties into the story. A Pokemon I would like to see used more often is Tyrogue. |

In The Origin of Storms, it's a Wobbuffet (there's something else as the lead Pokémon later in the story, but I'll not spoil that here). In Communication, it's a Snorunt/Glalie. And dangit, I still want to see more Voltorb and/or Electrode in fics, and either one in a lead role is something I'd especially love to see happen. :D |

The "lead" Pokemon is Augustus the Pidgeot, who basically acts as a foil for the human main character, Gale, despite the fact that they're "partners". He's the kind of person I'd like to have backing me up, because he can tell when other people are getting in over their heads. Gale, of course, is impulsive enough that he doesn't really listen and Augustus has to tag along anyway to make sure that Gale doesn't get hurt. As for what Pokemon I want to see, probably the Geodude/Graveler/Golem line and Kingler. Seriously, Kingler needs to show up in fanfics more often. |

Right now, I don't have anyone. My fic is more focused on the tragic romantic life of Silver(not me), but Honchkrow has been used...and I think he'll have the most appearance than any other Pokemon in my fic. I'd love to see Smeargle, Spiritomb, or Ditto get the spotlight. And thanks, Astinus. :D Nothing really is going to happen in flight. I mean, really, what could you do? All you can do is play 99 Bottles of Beer, and everyone knows that's not fun. >.> Dang, I just had an hour tornado warning. I had to stay at school. It was...horrible. On the bright side, it inspired a one-shot. I dunno if I'll go through with it, though...but it was good inspiration. |

In Feral Twilight, my main character has three fakemon that he uses more often than others. And his lead is the brutish Orion the Skunter (a link since my drawings are rather large): http://i241.photobucket.com/albums/ff58/HuntsmanSkunk/Skunter.jpg Anyways, I've got kind of a thing that I'm hung up on with a description of one of my other fakemon that the guy has, Incinermyn: http://i241.photobucket.com/albums/ff58/HuntsmanSkunk/Incinermyn2.jpg , or rather the description of its body. My question is, I the following description be too bulky? "The closer of the two several meters from me was a tall mammalian beast. Levitating in a mostly upright position a few inches above the floor, the Pokémon’s body easily cleared eight feet tall. His body was fairly slender for his size, though, resembling a large cylinder with fairly short legs and a stubby tail. This creature’s stature alone was enough to set him apart from most, but his pelt also seemed unique. Around the area immediately behind his head, there was a ring of golden fur flaring up from the beast’s skin. The hairs were fashioned into triangular spikes, forming a type of sun collar. From the base of this collar down to his shoulders, the Pokémon’s pelt was a dark red. The mammal’s tube-like forelegs resting at his sides also had this color of fur covering them up to their three-toed paws that had short white claws at their ends. After the shoulders, his fur began to progressively turn to lighter hues of red, eventually becoming pink around the waist. The hips were where the fur finally became a brilliant white. With the exception of the burnt areas of fur atop his thick thighs, the Pokémon’s hind legs too were white and appeared to be dragging somewhat as they thinned into a pair of feet that resembled moderate-sized ovals with three claws at their lowest points. Also bearing this white coat was his tail that resembled a cone widening somewhat as it reached away from the creature’s rear and then curled upward slightly while again thinned quickly to a fine point."~Excerpt Feral Twilight, Chapter One This is kind of bugging me because of how much there is for just this one character. |
I think it's alright. Especially since it's a fakemon. With regular Pokemon, most people know what they look like by knowing the name, so even reading the description it's just like "Oh, yeah. I know what that is."
I think it's fine. Don't let it bother you too much, though. |

For my other pet fic that I'm working on right now (and will be released... eventually), it's a fakemon that I've spoken entirely too much about on my LJ (because it's so creepy I love it), and one other fic that I'm playing with (as in, I've written about half the first chapter for) has an Aipom as a totem and an Alakazam as the main character's actual lead Pokemon. Also... Quote:
The creature's white tail curled with the bulbous middle rolling back and forth to swing the narrow tip through the air. Maybe something like that to make it flow, you know? 'Course, you don't have to do it exactly like that or even remotely like that. I'm just saying you may want to read it aloud a few times once you're done writing the chapter to see if it sounds okay to your ears. |
All of this discussion on lead Pokemon brings me to a new subject:
What Pokemon have you never seen in a Fan Fiction? |
What Pokemon do you have as the "lead" Pokemon in your fic? In the games, everybody has that "lead" Pokemon that they always use. What Pokemon would you like to see getting a lead role in fan fictions?
Well, have 'two' lead Pokemon - in Espeon and Umbreon as mentioned before, as my 'established trainer' has those two Pokemon to begin with. There are a few others that have joined that get a good bit of the spotlight as well, and then there's some with more minor or 'cameo' roles... Ones I would like to see? Ones that are not used that often really... and some that have a good chance for comedy. :) Quote:
BTW, there is a character that will appear *later* on in my fic that has an Electrode that you might like to see - the hint is that he has something to do with Miror B.... that character would only appear in several chapters time however... Quote:

*cracks fingers* Banette, Hitmontop, Delibird, Lapras, Kangaskhan, and Primape. Some personal favorites of mine too. |
What Pokemon do you have as the "lead" Pokemon in your fic? In the games, everybody has that "lead" Pokemon that they always use. What Pokemon would you like to see getting a lead role in fan fictions?
I've only written four one-shots... "I'm Sorry" featured Chansey and Weavile as the leads (both were pretty equal), "Waiting" had Infernape, "Mirror Image" had Electrike, and "Changes" had Gible/Gabite. What Pokemon have you never seen in a Fan Fiction? ;_; Hitmontop, Banette, and Duskull (and evos, though I prefer Duskull for some reason)! All awesome Pokémon, in my opinion. Hmm... Then there's Smeargle and Ditto, which I think would be interesting to see in a fanfic. |

In The Quest for the Legends, the lead Pokémon is Chaletwo, whose plan the entire plot revolves around. Scyther's Story and The Fall of a Leader are both focused on Scyther (probably the one I'd most like seeing more of in other fics, too). Morphic has a number of lead Pokémorphs, but no actual lead Pokémon. Not as far as I've planned, anyway. What Pokemon have you never seen in a Fan Fiction? Considering how little I read, I've never seen most Pokémon in fanfiction, really. :/ |

Wormadam and Hippowdon for sure. There are surely quite a few others I've yet to see used in a fic (mostly 4th-gen Pokémon), and probably a few that I've seen but have forgotten that I saw them, but those two are the only ones that seem to want to come to my mind right now. XD |
What Pokemon do you have as the "lead" Pokemon in your fic? In the games, everybody has that "lead" Pokemon that they always use. What Pokemon would you like to see getting a lead role in fan fictions?
Well, for "Forever Young" it's a Crawdaunt after being inspired by his Pokedex entry. On "Nothing, Everything", it's Balin the Ninetales, though there's a reason why I chose him besides me liking Ninetales, also inspired by its Pokedex entry (seriously, some of the entrie are interesting. XD) What Pokemon have you never seen in a Fan Fiction? You know, I never saw a Qwlifish. That little guy looks like an interesting Pokemon to write about. XD |
Let's see... Banette has been used in several of Kiyohime's works over at SPPF. Kangaskhan was also featured prominently in a one-shot by Mouse Tourmaline called "Keyo". Pupitar was featured in one of Tales's (from SPPF) stories. And there's a very cool set of Smeargle in Sike's The Origin of Storms. 0-o

My main characters are teamed up with the two Latis in my fic, but I won't count them because they aren't exactly in trainer-trainee relationships. Otherwise, here goes: Ren: nothing (yet). Kairn: Houndoom. Eli: Torkoal. Griffith: Gengar. Gail: Absol. Clave: Weavile Spoiler:
Venin: Cacturne. Tira: Tyranitar. More to come. Basically, pokeballs don't exist yet in my fic, so no one but people in high authority have more than one pokemon. This way, I get more time to develop each human/pokemon relationship. Quote:

What Pokemon would you like to see getting a lead role in fan fictions? My character's lead Pokemon is a Meowth that evolves into Persian. I'd really like to see Meowth more often in a non-"evil/TR" role. Also, I'd like to see more of Voltorb/Electrode and Koffing/Weezing. What Pokemon have you never seen in a Fan Fiction? Butterfree, Bellsprout line, most "fish-like" Water types (with Magikarp being an exception), many of the underused 4th gen Pokemon... Also Rattata/Zubat in any role other than "annoying random Pokemon that hero must contend with." And one more thing: Quote:

I've a fair few Pokemon that appear in my fic - a few trainer battles from time to time - Colosseum(Orre) trainer's teams had more variety than the GBA games... all those Zigzagoon or Tailow or Rattata... which is odd, when you consider the state of Orre and the wild Pokemon population. Still - I've had Quagsire to Spoink to Lotad to Skiploom appear thus far - granted, some are comeos or short mentions however. Silver - there be a Delibird soon enough in my story, so that's one of them... Quote:

And no, I haven't found any definite solutions to that problem, something that my poor, neglected fic stubs can attest to. ;.; One method that I've found fairly useful, though, is just taking an empty word document and writing whatever words pop into my head for about a page or so; helps to get the gathered stupidity out of my head. XD Other than that, I just stare at blank pages and get depressed. .__. Oh, and sometimes going to the lounge helps get my lazy muse to work. :3 What problems did you face when you first began writing fanfiction? Same as I do now; restricting the scope of my story and focusing it into a relevant whole. Also, laying down a firm starting point to build up the rest of the fic on. (Something which has not been helped by the lack of writing time I suffer from these days >.<) Names also give me problems, particularly ones for locations. Since I'm using a made-up region, that makes for a lot of roadblocks, buuut I'll get there eventually. ... Emphasis being on 'eventually'. xD What 4th-gen Pokemon do you see to be used more than others in fics? Lucario, definitely. Can't swing a dead Spinda around without hitting a Lucario. I've never really been fond of that pokemon, to be honest. :< I also see the Shinx line around quite a bit (I'd like to add Shining Nightmare to the list of fics that include that one). What Pokemon do you have as the "lead" Pokemon in your fic? In the games, everybody has that "lead" Pokemon that they always use. What Pokemon would you like to see getting a lead role in fan fictions? Ho-hum...I have a number of characters for a number of plot ideas. For the one I've currently chosen to process (and hope to get released eventually too), the main character's lead, as you call it, is a Natu. Not only is it a sorely neglected pokémon whose evolution line I've always liked, but it also has that combination of cutesy quirkiness and potential for really creepy stuff (psychic type, stares off into space for no apparent reason, connection with divining the future...I like. >D) that so few others can provide. Plus, the Xatu ability to see the future along with the evolution from a (by pokédex canon) flightless bird to a flying one mesh nicely with what I have in mind. Other characters I've toyed with but which may or may not come into use have leads including a Castform (inspired by the rain prompt. I'm most likely going to use this one at some point), a Ralts (the emotion sensing part is oh-so tempting, and it does bring a much-loved RP character of mine to mind. *sigh* Good times...) and a Murkrow (just looove Murkrow's look, always had. Plus, there's the whole villainousness of it all. xD). As for others I'd like to see in lead roles. Delibird, definitely; I just love the design on that one. Also, neglected little things like Shuppet (a pokémon which can also be linked to the emotion thing like the Ralts line but which always seems to get shunned in favor of the former. :<), Qwilfish (I swear I'm going to add a murder by Qwilfish into a fic one of these days), Shedinja (Creepy cool pokémon with an exceptional origin), Unown (again, there's the whole air of mystery thing), Nosepass and its evo (Just love that moustache xD), Kecleon (another pokemon with an exceptional ability) and any of the other rarely seen species out there. What Pokemon have you never seen in a Fan Fiction? A very large chunk of the fourth and second generation species certainly. Also the multi-heads like Dugtrio, Doduo, and Exeggutor, most deep-sea species like Wailord, Chinchou, Huntail and Relicanth or just generally pokémon that can't move out of water (Goldeen, Finneon, etc.). Most flying types aside from the generic picks. A number of oddbird pokemon like Kecleon, Spinda and Luvdisc. There are so many species with awesome potential that are getting overlooked. T_T |

Ah, the magic of teh intarweb: making everything we thought we were the originator of turn out to be someone else's idea too.
Speaking of which... Have you ever written a fanfic under the impression that it was a completely original idea, only to find out that somebody else had written one with a similar plot/main character/overall story structure and posted it before you did? Me, I've never had this happen because I always write stories under the assumption that somewhere on the internet someone is writing almost the same story I am and probably doing a better job. I always check before I post anything big to see if someone else on the forum has a similar fanfic up, so that minimizes my chances of looking like a plagiarist. |

Does anyone have problems in getting distracted from writing? Hah, you don't know the half of it. Ironically, the thing that distrcts me the most from writing is PC itself. If it get's really frustrating, I disconnect my internet, only to turn it back on to go on Serebii and see exactly how a certain Pokemon looks. Five minutes later I find myself on their forum >_> Have you ever written a fanfic under the impression that it was a completely original idea, only to find out that somebody else had written one with a similar plot/main character/overall story structure and posted it before you did? This somewhat happened to me with my friend, Jeff. Although our plots were very different, for about three chapters striaght very similar events were happening in our fics. I guess that's what happens when two people constantly share ideas with one another. |

Well, pretty much my plots are unorginal in the first place because I tend to have my stories based off of my favorite books and then Pokemonized it. :X I try to give my own twists and characters though. XD Anyways, there's one time at Serebii Duncan and I kind of used the same writing style and used it to make our scenes more suspensful and both of us used it for the same purpose: to do heartbeats. XD He posted his scene first and then I said how I used the same writing style too, but that I'm not mad at him, he didn't know about that, and he used it better then me. XD |

My fic: Eon Chronicles. Focus characters: Ren and Latias. Other information: pairing between Ren and Latias allows for use of special abilities by the human, major method of fighting is swordfighting. Setting: medieval times. Other fic: One Latias. Focus characters: Nadroj and Latias. Other information: pairing between Nadroj and Latias allows for use of special abilities by the human, major method of fighting is swordfighting. Setting: future. *whew* So yes. Besides the setting, our fics are nearly the same. It's a bit scary, too, as we had never seen each others' fics before nor had we ever even met each other before we started writing. We are still writing our respective fics, and they are still similar enough to be sequals, but we have plenty of different situations and we're building our characters differently. |
Have you ever written a fanfic under the impression that it was a completely original idea, only to find out that somebody else had written one with a similar plot/main character/overall story structure and posted it before you did?
I accutally accidently did that to a movie. In the fourth chapter of my fic, some ppl were stuck behind a car and bein' attacked some bad ppl on the other side of the car. One of the ppl said "We need a distraction!" and the main character provided said distraction. And the guy behind the car took out the bad guy. After i finished the chapter my friend showed up two days later with a movie called "American Outlaws" The opening seen of the movie was the seen i just described with Jesse James providing the distraction, and I'd never even seen American Outlaws before!! >_< |
Oh my gosh. My real life influences my fic so much.
There was a senior prank where there was a Chik-Fil-A cow hanging from the main building entrance, all the wires were pulled out and shoved at the back entrance, there was vasoline on the entrance stairs, and a tree got egg-rolled. And then the principal(AKA: The Shark) put the cow in the back of his truck. Dude, it's sooo going in my fic...somewhere. In which, brings up something I've come across... What is you opinion on Lost Chapters? And have you ever read one in a Fan Fic? |
What is you opinion on Lost Chapters? And have you ever read one in a Fan Fic?
I've never actually read a "Lost Chapter" but people have made movie chapters (which have absolutely nothing to do with the main story while lost chapters usually fill in gaps and plot holes). I find them a bit unnecessary and probably won't ever do one unless the main storyline is over. |
I may need lost chapters, even though I'm on chapter 22 and have barely even started the story (I think I overdo things sometimes...).
On that note, however, I've never seen a fic with lost chapters. Most people manage to write everything they want to write, I suppose, or they decide that it isn't worth it to go back and insert a new chapter in the middle of the story. Quick question: can you change the name of your fic? I slapped a title on a new one I just posted, but it isn't going to work. |
