Whipped cream? I think you have to share now ^_^
Welcome back Turtle King! *goes to haunt the HG/SS forums* |
Welcome back, people who were here before, and msotly got name changes and maybe a sun-tan.
Ah, that whipped cream business... GS remakes have currently taken over my life now, kthnxbye. |
Ahhh people recommending me. @[email protected] Don't listen to them! My main fic involves a kid who has a Dratini, an Eevee and a Gyarados within the first ten chapters and is then sent on a quest to save the world by capturing all the legendaries by a Mewtwo that can kill with its eyes and an Articuno/Zapdos/Moltres hybrid. Oh, and there's a Gym leader who trains legendary clones. Does that sound good to you?
Okay, I haven't been here for a while (or rather, I've been in the middle of writing a reply several times, but then I'm always at my boyfriend's place, and when I go back there he's closed the window and the post is gone). Let's see if I can't reply to some topics. When you write something for the first time (slash, action, romance etc), how do you go about doing it? Do you spend a lot of time researching the subject, how other writers handle it, or do you just dive right in and give it a go? Just dive in, pretty much. Of course, I haven't precisely done a lot of expanding my field since I started writing fanfiction. Recently I've been attempting to start two Phoenix Wright fanfics, but it feels really strange to me to write about canon characters since I've really never done that before (closest is writing about future-Ash, but he's changed so it feels more like writing an original character). I'd rather not try to be too influenced by how others write the characters, though. :/ In my first attempt at writing actual romance in the first half of The Fall of a Leader, I pretty much just tried to get it over with, since I didn't plan to do a lot more of it. Now I'm sort of attempting shipping (in one of the Phoenix Wright fics), which I never thought I would, and hopefully that turns out better, but the last place I'd look for inspiration for romance would be other fanfiction. I highly doubt I will ever in my life write slash, but if I ever do, my research will consist of staying as far away from other slash fanfiction as possible. I don't think I have ever in my life read a slash fic that felt more than very remotely in-character. Or okay, one, but all that one did was take a canon epic!friendship and make one of the characters bi. That was perfectly in character. Except for the part where that one character was bi. ...yeah. I have no slashgoggles. If your fanfiction would become a series or movie, would you change something? I'd basically make all the changes that are going to be in the IALCOTN to make things more sensible - replacing Molzapart with Mementity, taking out Rainteicune, making Rick officially train Pokémon that evolve by evolution stones, making Mark get Dratini thanks to May's inside information about breeding projects, etc. What do you hate most in fan-fictions? Well. 1. Romance involving children. Prepubescent kids should be interested in all the exciting Pokémon battling they could be doing, not in kissing the token opposite sex traveling partner. You could say it's a squick. 2. Like Jax, it irritates me further when romance always automatically happens between the male and female leads. It's just so predictable and typical. 3. The whole love-hate relationship cliché. Look, you people: when two individuals are crushing on one another or in a romantic relationship, they generally do not show this by arguing and fighting constantly and pronouncing their hatred for one another every five minutes! I don't know about you, but I've actually had crushes on people, and that notably dulls my ability to be annoyed at them or disagree with them; in fact, my brain will be desperately making up justifications for everything they do that I don't like. And in established relationships, there is likely to be good-natured bickering exactly because they know they can voice their disagreement on things without ending up in a real argument, but that is a very, very different thing from actual arguing and fighting, when real, strong emotions and anger come into play. A real fight with somebody you love feels like crap. If you're in a relationship with somebody who regularly drives you to shouting and screaming, it's a bad relationship that should be broken up. It's not cute couple behavior to put in your fanfic to make the relationship between your prepubescent male and female leads more 'realistic'. Good fights between romantic partners can be very emotional and intense moments, but they both need to be about something that really warrants it and they should show their mark on the relationship - it can take days for the damage from a serious argument to heal even if they don't break up altogether. 4. What's with all trainer fics featuring the rash but compassionate main character, the opposite-gender love interest the main character constantly argues with, and the usually older male character who explains things to the other two? 5. To finally move completely away from romance, stupid villains. I'm not necessarily asking for anything profound, but if you want there to be any tension in the story, you have to make the villains competent enough to pose a serious threat. At least make them read the Evil Overlord List. 6. Pokémon with no personalities or ones whose entire characterization could be summed up in one phrase: "likes ice cream", "really hyper". If something happens IRL to make you stop writing, how do you get back into it? I wouldn't really know, since it's never happened to me - not that I remember, anyway. :/ Gasp! Plot bunnies are on the attack, but you've got a brainchild to save! How do you keep from wandering off onto those other stories and leaving a poor abandoned fanfiction neglected and in the cold? I juggle fics, but I think I'm physically incapable of completely neglecting The Quest for the Legends; I love it too much. Generally it's the plotbunnies that end up in something that just fades away. My passion for things is in direct proportion to how much time I've spent on them already; once I've written more than three or four chapters of something, I automatically care enough to keep going no matter what might distract me. |
Dragonfree, totally agree on #3 and #4. Besides the typical main female and male character falling in love at the end, all the time the two characters would argue at one another all the time but then realize they are actually in love with one another. Also, there always seem to be three people traveling one another and in that formula.
Well, those didn't tick me as much as people always wanting an epic ending, though. XD |
Wow, its been a while since I've posted in here. Anyways, has anyone else noticed that the PFF&P lounge has been compromised but the outside world?

What do you hate most in fan-fictions? Mostly people who are told multiple times about simple mistakes, yet do nothing to correct them when they write anything else. That and people messing with the formatting. If something happens IRL to make you stop writing, how do you get back into it? I don't really. I mostly only manage to write by forcing myself to, but after a little bit of that I mostly write easier. It sure has been a while since I last posted here. School can occupy someones time quite well when it wants to. How do you decide on titles for your stories? I don't really know. Seriously, I just put something there that makes sense to me. I usually come up with a good replacement after a while though. I'm glad to be back! Yay! |
I'm normal. I'm not quite sure about the rest of you. I, however, am the most normal person here. ^_^
... I would say something that would prove that statement wrong, but I have a headache. |
How do you decide on titles for your stories?
So far they seem to center on important objects in the story. I have a few unfinished/posted one-shots that have titles centered around important events, names of characters, and general themes as well. |
How do you decide on titles for your stories?
Wait for something that sounds good to fall into my lap. Seriously. I just keep my ears open for phrases, or think of words that'll work and fit the plot of the fic. If I'm writing a one-shot based on a prompt, then the prompt is the title. |
How do you decide on titles for your stories?
Like Astinus, mostly if something sounds good to the story. I would get inspiration for titles from phrases, my friends, shows, movies, etc. And ditto on when Blue Screen of Death said how no one will be normal after visiting the Fanfic Lounge. XD |
Hooray, I am in a posting mood, at least with this thread.
How do you decide on titles for your stories? Like Astinus, I keep my ears open. Though I don't have a lot involving fanfiction going on, other than a trainer fic I'm writing. Adventure though Hoenn, blah blah. I can't come up with a better title than "Jade Adventures", so, for the moment, I'll stick with that. And now here is a question I just thought up of. If your story is going in arcs or whatev, do you plan out how each chapter will go ahead of time or go with the flow? Like I said, I'm writing a trainer fic, but I'm adding stuff to it, and it's obviously going in Manga-like arcs. edit: lol, I edited the question because it sounded a little dumb XD; |
I don't really post or review much fanfiction, but...
What do you hate most in fan-fictions? When the author falls in love with a certain character and spends endless amounts of time focusing on them in their fics and detailing their innermost thoughts in those little interview-meme things, yet fails to give their audience a reason to sympathize with or be interested in the character at all. The character can be original or not, it doesn't matter. What matters is that I am bored to death reading their long, self-searching monologues stuffed in the middle of an otherwise entertaining story. I could care less that you have their favorite color/ideal mate/theme song/favorite vacation spot all planned out, and that you can answer any stock survey question thrown at you concerning that specific character. Give me something real about them, something I can hold onto and understand as a human being. Show me who they are by writing about what they do, how they react to certain characters or situations - real circumstances, not plotlines molded to fit them. If you really love the character and feel you know them well, that's a great thing. But I need you to make me love them as well. I guess this sounds like I'm talking about Mary-Sues/self inserts, and I'll allow that the above is a symptom of Sues. Really, though, this can apply to any character, even ones lacking distinctly Suelike qualities. I guess it can even apply to plotlines, settings, and other elements of the story as well - even the story itself in its entirety. In fiction, or any sort of writing that you publish or make public, you have to try and take the reader with you. Otherwise you're wasting your time. |
Oh poop. And here I am writing/posting fanfiction I like writing. :(
If your story is going in arcs or whatev, do you plan out how each chapter will go ahead of time or go with the flow? Go with the flow. It's why I all of a sudden, in the chapter I was writing last night, had a random fisherman pop out of nowhere to challenge one of my characters. The only thing I have planned far in advance in the ending. I like to know where my characters end up, and I plop them down at the beginning of the story and see where they go from there. Most of the time, they wind up at the end, though I have to prod them with a cattle prod to get them to move. The rest of the time, my muse wakes me up just as I'm about to fall asleep with a new ending for the story, so I have to figure out which ending works better. |

'Kay guys, I have a dilemma (!spoiler alert!). In the Eon Chronicles, the Evil Overlord™ is after the titular books in which is recorded all known information on the Latian race (Latians being Latios and Latias). Anyone who has all of said books gains access to all of the secrets of the Latians and therefore gains the ability to control them.
Now obviously, the Latias and Latios that the story centers on are journeying with their companions in order to recover the Chronicles before the Evil Overlord™ does. Along the way, they meet this guy who basically says "hey! If the Evil Overlord™ ends up getting the books before you, gains control of you, and turns you into evil killing machines/dark minions/living rave parties, that would be really bad! So why don't I just kill you right now and rob him/her/it of any possible chance of doing so?" And my characters' reply? "...You know, you have a point there." So I need some reason for these dragons to exist despite the fact that they may ultimately end up destroying the planet/killing a lot of people/becoming the new hit sensation. What kind of quality would make them worth keeping around? |
Quote:
Correct me if I'm wrong, but wont the elite guy just take control of the next generation of Latis? Or are they the last of their kind? If that's the case (last of kind) then quote some famous guy. |

And presumably these two Latis are the last of their kind, but would that justify endangering the world for their sake? |

Dagnabit. I had this really impressive response, Spearow, to assure you that Asty's sense of humor is an acquired taste and not getting it is not unusual. It involved an analogy in which I compared her sense of humor to supergluing a fish to someone's ceiling.
But then dial-up ate my response, and it took three tries to navigate back to this page. So, the short of it is: 1. Asty's sense of humor is like supergluing a fish to someone's ceiling. Don't ask why. It just is. 2. Dial-up sucks. |
Quote:
That's all I could come up with after tossing out a page-long (and growing) synopsis of my entire plot. EDIT: Maybe that would make a good plot device, after all. The three options are a) Latis aren't killed but Overlord gains control as a result, b) Latis are killed and Overlord doesn't gain control, c) Latis aren't killed and Overlord doesn't gain control. The Lati's companions would strive for the last option, despite the opposition they would face with people telling them that they're selfish and whatnot. It might make for some good conflict and character building. |

Seriously, though, I'm bored. I should be looking for jobs (or, at least, more than I've already applied for and something other than what I did last year) or working on over 9000 personal projects, but I'm not. To make matters worse, I recently wiped my hard drive for the third time in the space of a month, so it's not like I have many distractions. (Eureka won't recognize my iPod. iPod.) Hence, I almost want to organize a little write-a-thon a la NaNoWriMo... only, you know, not during a flipping insane month like November and for PC/Pokémon fanfiction only. Now, this is just on the fly (mainly because a certain otter wants to see life breathed back into the FFL, and I don't feel like making another bold topic), but would anyone be interested in this? If so, I shall spam the crap out of the FFL later during the development so you can tell me what kind of challenge you want and how you want it to be. Why, yes. Rambly post is rambly. And obnoxious. But that's because any ordinary stick isn't enough to poke this thread. |
Quote:
Ahem. The NaNoWriMo thing sounds good to me, and I might even try to do it if I can escape this writer's block. It's of the Alcatraz prison, Fort Knox's maximum security setting variety. |
txt, the thing you were doing with the links made me think of House of Leaves. And then I hovered over them to find that the URLs led to YouTube, and I was like, "House of Leaves: The Movie. Oh schist." And then I clicked on it and found that it wasn't House of Leaves: The Movie, which made me feel a little bit more relieved.
Because House of Leaves: The Movie would require illegal substances to fully enjoy. Anyway, thanks for the interest. And tell me about it. Lately, if it doesn't involve aliens and/or trying my hardest to break at least one bone in Bill's body, I haven't been able to come up with much else. Hopefully, if this happens, I'll actually have some sort of inspiration by the end of week one. Edit: Also, the wooden kind. As in, the wooden kind that's about six feet long and three feet wide and attached to some kind of wheeling mechanism. I guess you would call that a "battering ram," but whatever. |
Every time I hear "sticks" and "poking", I think of dirty things.
I'd be interested in a write-a-thon for PFF&P. I was thinking of doing a personal NaNoWriMo, because November is a busy time for me with work. Summer is better (except for patriotic holiday weekends, but I have vacation time! YAY VACATION TIME! =D=D=D=D) But if there's the support/competition (Competition is healthy. Scott Adams said so!) then it'll be even more fun, and will keep my rear in gear. Also, I've never seen the first Tron. I HAVE NO IDEA WHAT WE'RE TALKING ABOUT, BUT I'M POSTING ANYHOW! IN CAPS LOCK! :D Quote:
Well, not exactly "lurks". |
This place was dead because of HGSS. Seriously, what's up with blue hair being awesome? O.o;
Anyways, a write-a-thon thing sounds awesome. I remember in one of the forums there's something like that. Each week there's a topic and you have to write a short story on that topic within the word limit. Perhaps something like that? |
Quote:
... Quote:
Maybe. |
Indeed - HG/SS be partly why I am dead. (Plus betaing and essays to write and three tests a-coming doesn't help either). -_-
I would be interested in write-a-thons or what-not. Doubt I'd have much time for it though. =/ |
Writing thing, sounds interesting.
If it weren't because I'm still a bit handcuffed schedule-wise, I would totally be in. Somehow my collegue's hardware knows when to fail... But, hey, if enough people talks about it, and enough people goes in, and enough people makes veiled references to things with sticks (very wide ones, alas), then wht!, I'm ALL 4 IT anyways! |
Quote:
But anyway... Quote:
Would a week to write 7k words sound like enough of a challenge? Or should the word count be higher? Quote:
|
It's rather dusty in here. :{
Personally, I'm fine with the amount of words necessary for the challenge being 7k words. It depends on what the prompt is (and obviously, the option of "another fandom" isn't going to be allowed) to make me even able to reach that high of an amount of words. For now, it would be good to keep the amount needed low, until we all actually get used to the schedule. This is a way to get us all to write on a schedule, right? |
I'd help out :P
Still despite my newbiness here ;) Perhaps to make the 7k words somewhat easier (1k a day?), the canon could be based on certain things, to at least narrow down focus. As an example, one could refer to the anime. Thank god I have all summer though Oo lol (aside from work). I'd also want to write on pen and paper, but porting it to the computer isn't fun. Rather I'd just plan on paper. Though I do hope they have a word program like thing for the DSiWare soon... cause I'm going on vacation. I liked the idea of the Serial game, accept the current story that it's headed in, is something I probably won't continue otherwise (but hey that is one of the many reasons why it is created, haha). /me removes dirty thoughts of sticks and other things out of head. |
Hmm, that idea sounds interesting. I'm a big fan of anything that makes me feel like I have to write (such as the corpses and that Serebii contest I did last year) so a mini-NaNoWriMo would be interesting, especially since doing the real one has been something I've thought about before. I know there's no way in hell I'd be able to do that, though. 50k words is twice the length of what TFC has right now, and...that'd just be insane.
7k, on the other hand, is right about my current average chapter length. (Which is actually about 8k but whatever. More is better.) Depending on my mood and all it can take me a month or more to write one of these chapters, but I know I can be faster as evidenced by how fast I was at the start of TFCv2, as well as the increased speed I've been writing lately. I had to rewrite half of what I already had for TRINITY chapter 3 and have since added probably about as much, to the point where I plan on finishing it up in the next day or two. All of this was on top of finishing TFC chapter 4, and this has all happened in the span of just about a week since I got out of school. Plus, I've still had plenty of time for video games, wondering how the hell I managed to get an A in Calculus 2 since my calculations say that even if I aced the final (which has never happened for me EVER, in any class) I still should have gotten a B unless I'm grossly underestimating the unknown total grade for the quiz/homework portion, and even reading AEM. :D So yeah, I'd be interested and think that 7k in a week is fine. For reference, that's about 12 to 13 pages for me, although depending on how "dense" your writing is it'll vary. I write somewhat dense with longer paragraphs for description, so I'm probably on the low-end of the spectrum there regarding page counts. (Not counting the people who don't space right <_<). I'm guessing the average for most people would be closer to 15. In other words, the people who find that they can't write one single piece (be it a one-shot or a chapter) for longer than five pages might want to stay away, unless their writing is dense enough that it's in danger of collapsing on itself. (Actually, I just went through one of my chapters and after removing all line breaks I only got up to 4k in five pages, and by that point it was already the worst wall of text I've ever seen.) |
7000 words in a week sounds good; less per day than NaNoWriMo and for less time, which makes it easier to participate, but still a challenge that will get something done. I like it.
|
So apparently Mastermind got locked on another forum I post my fics on due to neglect. A sudden influx of members came in due to Platinum being released and started making a lot more threads, which means my fic threads are dropping like rocks. So now I may actually have to update frequently to keep them from being closed.
I think that's good, actually. No more six-month hiatuses for me. |
Yeah, 7k sounds like a good amount to go for.
And txteclipse, that sucks. Huh, I thought many people would make HGSS threads. O.o |
7k in a week... that's perfectly reasonable. Still a challenge, but not overwhelmingly daunting (NaNoWriMo just seemed impossible the first time I tried it--I failed utterly xD)

So... minichallenge? 7k words sounds nice. What I'm more interested right now is the trigger- I think it will be decisive to overcome my current WritersBlock.

Guys, I got a quick question. How you think a Pokemon's type is determined? For instance, why would a Lucario be a Steel and Fighting type? Is it biological or something else?
Reason I asked this is because the OT fic I'm planning is going to be loosely based off the Delta Species card series and on those decks a lot of Pokemon are categorized into a different type than they're usually are (for instance a water type Togetic card). I'm thinking of Team Rocket some way able to change a Pokemon's type based on info from Holon (the region setting of the Delta Species cards). Also, as to why Team Rocket is because I'm going to have the fic set at Johto (I blame HGSS news XD; ) If you're wondering, no you don't need to know too much about the card games I mentioned. In short, all you need to know is Team Rocket is going to try some way to messed up a Pokemon's type. XD; |
Wellll, a Pokemon evolves to adapt like any normal living creature in our world. Riolu may not have been tough enough (the little guy probably has tons of people wanting to take advantage of his still-growing aura ability), so he gained a steel typing to better defend himself. [/lousyanswer]
(A better example would be the Eeveelutions, but I'll end up droning xD) |
Quote:
Incidentally, haven't forgotten about the challenge. I've read over the suggestions, and basically, this is what I'm planning: Format Seven-day (Midnight Sunday -> 11:59 PM Saturday -- either your local time or mine) challenge in which writers need to get 7k+ words down before midnight each Sunday. Genre Pretty much all-genres, any canon you want. All of them need to be Pokémon fics, however. (I'm not entirely sure it'd be easier to force people into one set canon, Feign. Some people are a bit more comfortable writing in mangaverse as opposed to gameverse, for example. So, I figure if you can figure out what works for you, feel free.) Prompts? To be honest, I'm not sure about this one. It'd be helpful, but I'm thinking maybe it should be optional so we don't end up like the Fanfiction Challenges and just so we have a bit more freedom. Threads There will, of course, be a discussion thread to post in for when you should be doing your speed challenge. I'm thinking we could also post links to our work there, and the first/second post can list entries. It'll probably end up in the main forum. Maybe. Also, yeah, you'd get to put your submissions in your own threads. There will be shiny tags to put in your titles. Y/N? Suggestions? |
The developers did it.
No, wait... Given that Pokémon entities are strongly typed as far back as Arceus + plates, I'd say that the differentiation between types is a projected attribute around a Pokémon's better compatibility with certain kind of energies in the hierarchy of energy in the Pokémon world. In pretty much the same way there is a distinction of primary elemental forces in our world, ranging from gravity - the weakest but more encompassing - to weak/strong nuclear energy, and how some natural constructs seem to be better designed to operate via a specific kind of energy (for example, orientation systems in organic beings seems to be more energy-efficient when related to gravity, as can be seen with cats, locust and large mammals, whereas when precision is required, electromagnetic dependance seems to be the best option, as demonstrated by birds). The key difference is that unlike our universe, the hierarchy of energy in the Pokémon world is non-pyramidal, and not based on strength to begin with. Some of these distinctions may stem from the driving of energy (Psychic, Dark, Electric), whereas some others may be simply the result of adaptions in organic (Pokémon-wise) systems (such as Ground, Flying and Grass). If we take the idea that Mew = Ancestor, Pokémon with different types may be an adaption of different Mew offspring to better handle such kind of energies when interacting with each other. That may lead to some Pokémon to become "two-typed". Some Pokémon may take a role in nature that, upon evolution, requires them to be even more fit to a certain kind of energy containment or manipulation, thus they may gain or drop a type. Looking carefully, evolutionary lines where type changes do occur are ones where the change itself is essentially induced by an external agent (Stones, etc), although the evolutionary lines involving large-system adaption seem to be excempt from this: see Charizard/Salamence (gain Flying), for example. Then again, I may have got the thing backwards and typing is a manifestation of these energies that by itself shapes Pokémon design and evolution when it defines a purpose, which may be like saying that Mew descendants adapted because they were affected by typing. Look at Celebi, who can travel through time and seems to have no further purpose than to represent and protect flora: there is no apparent reason for the Psychic type to be there (it could have been Water or Ground, for that matter), at least I don't see how psychic power is required for time-travel. But maybe the particular need to protect flora across time and to therefore gather a large amount of information this way leads to the Psychic type gaining prominence at the moment of "design" of this particular species. Or I am just rambling, which wouldn't be so strange to begin with. Either way, I think "typing" is not as much a biological differentiation as a design one, where the organism is seen as of a certain type because it is more fit to handle a certain kind of primal, distinct and well defined energy source or manipulation that was there to begin with. EDIT: Dang it! After all my rant, I was ninjaed by Valentine who wrote the opposite, sort of. Whatever. I support the idea of the thread, and I thing the format is OK, whereas I still think a trigger of sorts would be welcome. |

Now, in this moment, I am going to admit my ignorance on all knowledge of writing, and admit that I'm still a bit confused on the qualities that make a character a Sue. This is further explained by actually mentioning my problem. My main character is just a basic trainer. She doesn't do anything special. She has no special qualities to her that make her even come off as a Sue. My one problem is that the plot of the fic I'm currently writing about her has her meet a "Legendary" Pokemon (Legendary is in quotes because it is not any one of the actually Legendary mythological Pokemon, but is the human-created Mewtwo). And the meeting is not one that makes her a Chosen One, where afterward she has to save the world from any sort of danger. So I guess what my question can be is if meeting a Legendary one-of-a-kind Pokemon is an automatic sign that the character is a Sue. I would like to say "No", because previous readings have lead me to believe it, but I figure that right now I am looking for reassurance and advice. (I also say "No", because I know that my plot doesn't call for my character to be a Chosen One, so I know she is safe, but [future] readers don't know that.) |
I wouldn't think so.
Not if she doesn't go all "I will save the world!" after it. |
I'm inclined to agree - meeting a legendary Pokemon doesn't make for a Mary Sue. It's just one of the things Mary Sues tend to do, methinks. Given the descriptionn of the plans you have for her, seems fine to me. =) 'Course, you have to be careful with it and all. *shot for stating the obvious*
I had some weird ideas recently, heh. One even involves a guy with a split personality. Of course, I wouldn't know how to go about that exactly. XD Not that I have too much time to write right at the moment. |
Quote:
The only thing is that I wouldn't want to see the fic turn into a Pokemorph story... >.> For the Legendary Pokemon thing, to make it less coincidental, one could write it where, it was the Legendary instigating the meeting, or it was a chance encounter. Instead of something like "I'm going to search for every legendary Pokemon." hence the legendariness. Or you could also take its pokedex into account, like how Articuno saves people in danger in rough winter storms in the mountains. Which further legitimizes the use of a Legendary. |
Yeah, I don't think meeting a Legendary would make a character a Sue. As long as the plot doesn't have the Legendary be all following the Chosen One and such, you should do fine.
In that Delta Species fic I mentioned earlier, I'm actually thinking about main characters to meeting up with a Legendary by chance and then all of a sudden they have to save it from Team Rocket capturing it again (the Legendary was caught before but then broke out). Think Pokemon Chronicles. XD |

About the Sue, going to have to agree with the others, and this is mostly why: Quote:
(Excuse me while I die in hellfire for implying that Jesus Christ was a Gary Stu.) Anyway, the point is if you don't have a character who ends up becoming the Chosen One or otherwise overly *~*~*special*~*~* in one way or another, then what you're doing isn't a Mary Sue. Rather, it's more like an averted trope, I think, where the reader expects a Mary Sue when the legend appears, but it just doesn't happen. It's clever, not cringe-worthy. 'Course, you'd have to make it clear that you're not heading down the Chosen One kind of path as well. Parodies tend to do this by having this kind of character exist in the foreground with a Chosen One running around in the background, but in a serious fic, just emphasizing the idea that there's no room for a Chosen One in the legends of the region should do. If you want to see DID done well in fiction, though, I tend to like plugging Kagerou: An Electric Manga. But that's also because I'm a fangirl. Quote:

Hmm lol, I guess I had thought this too, was a Serial game type of thing (but slightly more organized, I guess I was wrong). I already have an idea for mine, so when can we start? :P |

The reason why I really recommend researching DID and other personality disorders is because the media tends to fail at depicting psychology, even the films that claim to be true-to-life. (For example, either The Three Faces of Eve or Sybil, another book/film based on a patient with DID, faced controversy when the actual patient objected to the depiction of her disorder, if I recall correctly.) So, the way you might see it in media -- like with the cliché of good personality, bad personality -- might actually only be a glorification of one symptom or a very loose interpretation of a single set of symptoms. (Sorry. Abnormal psych is still a strong interest of mine, among other weird smatterings of science. XD) |
Quote:
Perhaps if one is serious about it though, they could just as well do a Golem/Smeagol approach. |
Quote:
Getting back to the point, yeah, if you can figure out how to avoid repeatedly traumatizing your character (i.e., giving them a reason they feel the need to adopt more than one personality), you might be able to pull off whittling down the set to two, but generally, it just doesn't really happen that often in actual psychology, probably because the patients who suffer from the disorder don't usually just endure one traumatic event. On the other hand, since we're working with the media, one could plausibly just stick to two personalities because that's the most recognizable form of the split personality concept. It really depends on what you need for the story and how obsessive about psychology you want to be. Also as a side note, but I looked it up, and reportedly, the woman the Eve character was based on actually had over twenty personalities. So, yeah, the movie really toned down her disorder. |
Hurrah for the need to research stuff before I actually get down to doing that, whenever that would be (a while later, at least). Wouldn't really have tried without knowing more on it though. XD Cheers for the links/discussion, shall be helpful. *favs links* Heh, the idea is also for an 'original' story rather than a fanfic for a change - most of my random, recent ideas fitted to the former.
Twenty personalities... that's a darn lot. =/ Doubt it'd be that easy to focus on each on either in a text and all, and two does seem to be the norm, probably for the sake of ease, the classic/cliche good/bad thing, and that two is a cool number that deserves more attention. =P Three's a good number too though. |
In the two main one's looked at in the Eve story, her original personality was that of a reserved house wife. While her 2nd personality, was much more permiscious, like buying expensive items and going to night clubs. I think this was the 40s or 60s, so back then that would have meant a lot. So it doesn't have to be completely light and dark personalitys, almost just small things to consider.

I greatly appreciate the reassurance on my thoughts about my character. It has given me the boost I need to continue writing my fanfic without thoughts against it clouding my mind.
I do have one more question though. I have planned for a possible short story/multi-chaptered fic (I haven't decided) where my character (I know that it is possibly looked down upon to have the same main character in more than one fic, but she fills the plot I have for her, for they are all connected) has to save a town from a problem. I know that "saving the world" isn't a good thing, but is saving a town all right? With this, I again figure I'm safe, but part of the reason behind my thoughts that it is all right is because of my doctrine. (My character saves the town because it's the "right thing to do", and she really doesn't want to [like, really really really doesn't want to], but is forced to, so I find her a better character than the Sues I used to see because those Sues seemed to really want to do all the saving.) On the positive side, once this question is answered, then I won't have any more questions, for now. I wish I could repay the help I have been given, but psychological disorders are something that I have little knowledge about, and is best left discussed by those who have the information. I can offer my services to bobandbill if he needs them. Since Val mentioned a Livejournal community, Little Details, I can post to that community if you have a question about DID since I am a member, bobandbill. That is, if you can't find specific information, and would like it answered by a very helpful and knowledgeable community. |

- Make sure you develop your character either in situation or in personality to have some sort of motivation to help the town. Look at it this way, team rocket is bad (okay stupid bad), but they still help out *for their own reasons* as sometimes mentioned. On the other hand, Ash may help out either because he feels compelled to do so, or because he was the one that instigated the problem to begin with. So saying that, you can't really have some depressed reclusive sociopath decide to help out the town. Though I think you already knew that Oo lol - Because it is a town, it would make sense that others would also help out (assuming that not everyone in the town was affected by x event). Though people from out of town could help. Making your character the only one doing the saving, sort of looks like the chosen one scenario. Again this is justified, if it is explained properly, but it looks like you won't be including it. But yeah, as long as these conditions are met to make sense, then I'd say it would be totally justified. Myself, I am still in the planning stages of a fic using anime canon, to some extent. I've always wanted to make a story that was darker than the TV shows, and somewhat more than the movies. And I'll be incorporating Aura, so the "chosen" thingy will go up a bit, but as long as it is properly explained, I think it should work. |
Sues are really not so much about what the character does. Fear of Sues should not restrict possible fiction plots to ones where the main character does absolutely nothing remarkable. Ultimately, it's about whether the character feels like a Sue, and that depends more on how you write her and the other characters in the story than on precisely what the plot requires her to do. Why are Sues actually bad? Because they feel fake - something about how they're portrayed or how the world responds to them is just off. The Sue has stupefying luck that defies all laws of probability, or everybody magically loves her even though she's acted like a *****, or her past is ridiculously troubled without her showing the appropriate scars for it, or she makes men fall head over heels in love with her and leave their wives just by walking past them, or she has special powers that don't fit into the world - she doesn't work. She's not realistic. The rules of the world have been bent to accommodate her. The author's internal reality simulation, instead of taking the world and characters established to a logical conclusion, takes shortcuts by modifying the world or characters in the Sue's favor as the story goes along.
Does it make sense, within the context of your world, that somebody might meet Mewtwo the way she meets him? If so, then that happening cannot by itself make her a Sue. Does it make sense for her to save the village? Then she is no worse than any real person who has saved a village. I don't recall any particular story, but I'm sure there must be plenty of them. There are remarkable people in the world. There are such things as heroes - there are people who have saved other people's lives. If such people realistically exist, they can't be Sues. The key is that even though they save other people's lives or are otherwise remarkable, they're still human - they make mistakes, it is not always convenient to be them, sometimes they're in a bad mood and yell at people who don't deserve it, they don't always save the day. As long as the character always comes across as realistically human and the world around them makes sense, it doesn't matter if they happen to do something somewhat remarkable in between. |
Heh. I actually created a DID RP character on a site once... she was fun to play for a little while, but I ended up favoring one side over the other (the angstyish, one, I guess).
My research wasn't the best, seeing as I used Wikipedia of all things. But the basic concepts are the same; it mostly stems from a traumatic issue. Even if you write in the traumatic conflict, it doesn't necessarily shoot your rating R, so long as you write it to keep it in a PG/PG-13 range. On average, though, people with DID have ten or so "alters." But two, I think, can be perfectly acceptable. We have the traumatic event, and the character has to create a new way of interpreting the world to deal with the trauma/stress. Remember, Google's a goldmine (I'm looking at the DID page on WebMD right now). A character with DID can be a lot of fun to write (and this is based on personal experience), but you also have to keep the psychological aspect of it all in mind. There are plenty of issues DID people experience other than weird social relationships. |

But I do know what you are talking about. Also, Dragonfree, that post of yours is the best I have seen recently. |
Yeah that could also work. Hmmm it is somewhat like movie 2, where Ash just wanted to get started, and the rest of the town didn't 100% know what was going on.
|
I have to agree with Astinus. Dragonfree hit the nail on the head there with the Sues.
Anyway, it's been quite a while since I dropped in here last. Has anything much happened since I went on hiatus? I know Heart Gold and Soul Silver were announced, and Platinum came out last week, but are there any great up-and-coming fic writers for me to check out or anything? I mean, I'm in a writing/reviewing mood. Oh, and brief update on my own trainer fic --- GONE. I managed to wipe my flash drive a couple of weeks ago, together with ALL my Pokemon and Star Wars fanfiction. All I have left is a couple of comedy drabbles that were sitting in a dusty folder in the corner of my...somewhere. So, back to the drawing board! >:[ I'm in a bad mood. I write better when I am grumpy. *trundles off to write fic about a depressed Cynthia* |
KENJI'S RETURNED! =3
*glomps Kenji* I know exactly how you feel with your wiped flash drive. The same thing happened to me a few months back. I can't say that the exact same thing happened to me, because I'm mostly old-school, and have my fic/notes on fics written in various notebooks, but it does suck terribly. And do not look to me for fic recommendations. XD; |
*glomps*
I can't believe I left, actually. It's too much fun here. I've had the last three days off school, actually, so I've been writing. Expect a oneshot soon! |
Holy crap holy crap holy crap. I just played the inFamous demo and almost wet myself. So insanely pumped for this game!
How better to celebrate having just torn through a city and all the baddies therein with ridiculous electrical superpowers than putting on some quiet piano music and writing fanfiction? I, for one, can't think of anything. Only problem is I'm having trouble finding a particular word. This word needs to describe someone saying something quietly but with utter resentment and loathing, without me having to actually say "quietly but with utter resentment and loathing." The sentence is as follows, with the blank standing for the word I need: “You murdered Weavile,” the soldier [blank] as he dropped from his perch to crouch in the snow. Any suggestions? Some things I've already thrown out are "hissed," "spat," "said almost inaudibly," and a few more. The word needs to encompass both the quiet and contemptuous aspects of this statement. |
How about "growled"?
And that oneshot of mine is going up NOW, unless Dad catches me on the computer, in which case it'll be tomorrow. |
Quote:
|
Growled be good, methinks. *throws support behind the word* Or snarled. That word starts with 's' though, so idk. =P
Hello again, Kenji, and welcome back to this place which happens to be made of awesome. And pity on your wiped hard-drive. *gives a hug* There probably are some new authors of awesome, but I need to read more released here as of late. -_- Well, stuff that aren't the MSTs at any rate, which I suggest need reading. =P Quote:

Oh, wow. Someone else was on hiatus, too?
I don't even remember the last time I posted here, or anywhere else in internet for that matter. I've just been so mind-boggingly busy half of the time and down with a high fever whenever I had a free day. Soon it'll be over for the summer, and I've never been more relieved about vacation starting. Anyway, I'm back now. I guess. And the conversation here is interesting. Not "a psychologist could do a life's work with this thread"-interesting, but actually, you know, interesting. I wish I'd gotten here faster, but nooooo, I had to read some stupid modern literature that drowned all the joy from my life and killed my will to write. I'm suffering from a severe writer's block right now, and it's all thanks to my Finnish teacher. I have nothing against modern literature, but those books sucked so much. That aside, I'm agreeing with Dragonfree a lot. I don't think that even "saving the world" is too much to do if you pull it off well. I like the way Frodo saves the world in Lord of the Rings: anyone could do it, really, but they don't. Frodo doesn't have any special powers, he isn't really The Chosen One(tm) nor is he Strong, Mighty and Righteous. He's tempted by the Ring, too, and all in all, he's not even happy about having to take it to Mordor (I think it happens a bit too often that the hero of the story is all like "I'm the only one who can save the world so I have to embark on this troublesome journey, get kicked in the ass over and over again and waste years of my life for common good... AWESOME!!!"). It's a shitty job, but someone's gotta do it... I like that kind of world-saving a lot better than the good ol' "I'm the only one who can do this!". Not that it can't be pulled off as well, though. On a completely unrelated note, I don't like movie!Frodo. He whines way too much. ...I kind of forgot my main point. |
I thought Negrek would answer Astinus' question on the Sues as she always bring good advice. XD; In any cause though, Dragonfree did bring good advice and made me think a little bit more about my OT fic. :)
Kenji, sorry, can't give out recommendations there. Haven't read too much fics here and also I usually don't do that in fear of someone screaming at me for not recommending their fic. XD; An-chan, totally agree that saving the world doesn't make someone a Sue. I only watched the movie version of LOTR, but I thought the story did well on that. |
Yes, Tolkien did well on not making Frodo a Sue, but it has been many years since I read the books, and I don't even recall if I made it to The Two Towers. The prose is quite thick...
On another note, my new fanfic (oneshot, c. 1300 words) is here. |
You'd have to keep in mind that the one ring has a different affect on everyone. ;)
Also if anyone is in the reviewing mood, I should have my fic up hopefully in the next week. I've used Canon from the anime, and will be using Ash and co. |
Quote:
I stop watching the anime and reading animefics and playing animehacks and now it haunts me again..! xD What's it about? |
Well for simplicity's sake, I'm going to base it right after the events of the movie 'Rise of Darkrai', the 11th movie, I believe. Though you do not have to watch it to read this.
Basically revolving around the idea of Aura (found in the movie ummm Lucario and the secret of Mew, or something like that), Spoiler:
Needless to say, I will have the main villains give information on Aura, so it's not like you'd have to read up or watch much :P The main reason however, that I wanted to write this, was because the show itself is usually never that dark, while the movies somewhat are, but the conflict gets resolved quite complacently it seems, so this way, I'll turn it around, while perhaps also having the odd legitimate anime moment like team rocket blasting off. Though I will refrain from a narrator type, as well as a script type fic. |
"Pah," I said. "It's perfectly fine. There's no need to tell me no worries, there are ways of understand aura without seeing Ash's face."
Then I laughed. Why am I writing this like a story? I thought to myself, just before I clicked Post Quick Reply. |
You're in the current mindset?
In this case though, the trio is somewhat the main cast (like any other episode). Uh Dawn, Brock and Ash. It would be interesting however, if I did focus in on the villains too :) |
Geez, I leave for a few days and we all do serious! :p
Sounds like an interesting premise, Feign; Aura is a power/substance/whatever that isn't adequately explored in the canon, so I'd be very interested to hear your take on it and see what you'll do with it. |
Fan Fiction
I'm writing a Pokemon fan fiction, but have only just started the firs chapter, so I can't put it anywhere yet.

As in, we're happy to have you, but if you want us to comment on the fact that you're writing a fanfiction, a better way to handle things is to, well, write the fanfiction. Or at least tell us a little bit about what you're doing if you want some advice on the details of your fic before you post it. Otherwise, it feels like you're trying to talk to us about something we can't really talk to you about, and that sort of means we can't really talk to you because there's nothing to say. Not to be mean or anything, of course. I'm just saying that if you want to talk to us and make friends, that'd be great, but keep in mind we need to be able to say something back to you. As a side note... *pokes Scarlet Weather's MST back to the surface* I'll comment to it myself soon, but in the meantime, poor Scarlet isn't that bad of an MSTer. ;_; Also also, I swear, the game I was talking about will be started soon. Also also also, would it be useful to make an index of stories in this forum arranged by genre? Sometimes, I feel like I want to read a really good OT story, for example, but I don't feel like sifting through the romance and Pokemorph fics. Or, alternatively, I want another good sci-fi fic, but I'd like to read one that's been recced or needs reviews. Maybe it's just me, at least. |
Quote:
There's actually a Pokemon Catalog index at Serebii and it's a very helpful thread. Yeah, I too sometimes feel like reading a good OT fic and all that. Ya know what? I think I might start that thread. Is that all right with you, Astinus? :) |

Anyway...I was wondering, would it be terribly confusing for a ic to switch from first person to third person every so often? My fic is going to involve flashbacks, and I want to differentiate the two in some way so that people know what's what and don't get confused. |
