Looks like I have a lot to answer. I love these bold topics!
How would your main character react to the sight of slaughtered children? The DCMK characters would go into full-on detective mode. The Pokemon Trainers would just stare at first, then start channeling their inner detectives. Except for Yellow, who would probably faint, and Dianne, who would channel her inner CSI, complete with lab. The Power Rangers are sorted by their colors, so... The Reds would wait for the results coming from either the DCMK characters, the Pokemon Trainers, or the CSI's, then, after figuring out whodunnit, go after the suspect, weapons at the ready. The Pinks would start sobbing hysterically, except for Rose, who would welcome the opportunity to help in the investigation. The Yellows would stare in shock, and start saying something round the lines of "WHO DID THIS?! I DEMAND TO KNOW SO I CAN EXACT MY REVENGE!!" The Blacks would try VERY hard not to be affected. The Greens would try to cheer others up, but when you're around death...well...it's highly implausible. The Blues would jump right in the investigation. The Whites would try to cope. The other Rangers would scream, shout and say their opinions. Take one character. How much has they evolved throughout the fan fiction? Tell us in what has they changed (Physically, Mentally, Spiritually.... etc.) Hm...well, Dianne's from the real world, dropped right into the TV world by way of a chest. Here goes. At first, she was a complete and total disaster. She fangirled over everybody, creeping them out. Ash fixed that right after he met her. I think. But when she became a Pokemon Trainer with her Pikachu, Lynn, who is her starter (and her first battle, which was with Ash who was far more experienced than her, and which she lost), she realized that she had a long way to go, and started to stop caring about if she knew a character or not. She still fangirls every now and then, but you can't really take it out of her completely. Physically. She used to have long, long, LONG black hair that she tied into a ponytail. But she's chopped it off in favor of a more boyish bob. With more cowlicks than her old hairstyle. Spiritually...she's more in tune with Pokemon than she was back in the real world. And now that she's a real Trainer, I don't think she can go back to playing it on her GBA. Mentally...she's much more knowledgeable and experienced, thanks to many Gym Battles and Contests. In other areas. Dianne's much calmer and more humorous (deadpan snarker alert) without me having to resort to "ZOMG IT'S ___________" mode. She's gone a long way. Is writing mostly inspiration or determination? And what are your secrets for turning the inspiration into determination? And which writing do you enjoy more: the inspired or the worked-for? First question: It's both. Sometimes I have to work hard to be able to churn out ideas. Other times, when I see something, I go "Hey, that's it!" Second: Huh. Just a good old daydream. Third: Both! As long as I can create a story without the idea slipping through my fingers, it's quite enjoyable. |
What's this now, people posting on topic and actually talking stuff relevant to fanfiction? Who are you people and what have you done to the Fanfic Lounge? :<
Is writing mostly inspiration or determination? And what are your secrets for turning the inspiration into determination? And which writing do you enjoy more: the inspired or the worked-for? Fifty-fifty on the first question, I'd say. For me, inspiration is what shapes out the story in general terms, determines what will happen, who will make it happen, and how. Determination is the manual labor, assing the plan into action. Both are important and a lack of the latter has hindered me several times before, but really...without inspiration, there's just nothing to get started on. Unless the plan is just to churn out the pageloads of meaningless drivel that pass for a good fanfic on Fanfiction.net, you really can't go by without a good deal of both. Second point, can't say I have much of a secret really. When inspiration strikes me hard enough, it just converts into determination whether or not I want it to and the story will haunt me for days unless I at least try to put it in writing. If I don't get that level of inspiration, though, then I really can't force the determination either. The harder I try, the harder it becomes to write, and I always end up loathing the end result. So really, I've learned it's best for me to not try any tricks. They never pay off. Third...well, see my first answer. I personally think any piece of fanfiction worth reading will inevitably be both inspired and worked for to some degree. That being said, errors of writing technique (spelling, grammar etc.) are far easier to correct than a bad premise, so if I had to choose one then I'd go with inspired. People who are just determined without any inspiration to go with it are the reason those bland, cliché-ridden, and utterly dull fanfic monstrosities that count their chapters in hundreds exist. << Also, for the sake of getting more questions around. Which of these two fanfic types do you prefer: short and intense or long and detailed? It's probably been asked sometime in this thread's history, but hey; I haven't been around in a while. XD |

But last you were here was over a year ago. O_o Well, welcome back at any rate. XD Goes to show there is no escaping the FFL. Which of these two fanfic types do you prefer: short and intense or long and detailed? I don't really have any prefernence, personally... I like both, and sometimes prefer one kind over the other. Short and intense when I just want a quick read, and a long chaptered fic when I just want to lie down and read something for a while. But as long as it's good and tells the story (I believe a story should be as long as it should be to tell the story it's trying to... tell =P), I'm satisfied. I don't believe I have any preference writing-wise either although short ones are much quicker to write. XD |
Which of these two fanfic types do you prefer: short and intense or long and detailed?
I'd have to say long and detailed. Oneshot's and short stories don't seem to interest me at all. They're just too short to become immersed in. I need a story to draw me in, keep me there, and then let me go with a whole new perspective from when I started. |

Glad to be back at any rate. As for myself...well, a lot of my favorite authors are very wordy and I tend to be that way myself when writing RP, not to mention that Midsummer Knights is still one of my favorite fics on this site, but lately I've just started appreciating the elegance of expressing a lot with only a few sentences. So...I appreciate both, in equal measure more or less, but there is ease of reading to one-shots and short stories in that I don't need to reserve an hour or two to get properly immersed in them. |
Alter Ego too? Wtf!? Is the apocalypse occurring? 'Scuse me while I go hide in my refrigerator.
Which of these two fanfic types do you prefer: short and intense or long and detailed? Both. I've read stellar examples of both types. That and my own writing ranges from one-shots to the currently-24-chapter Eon Chronicles. How would your main character react to the sight of slaughtered children? First off, they would all probably vomit. I mean, let's be honest here. Then they would go through the usual indicators of mental scarring: become extra-clingy, have anxiety attacks, experience nightmares, etc. Latios would probably be the least affected, and Ren would be the worst. Take one character. How much has they evolved throughout the fan fiction? Tell us in what has they changed (Physically, Mentally, Spiritually.... etc.) Hmmhmm. Just one? I guess Kairn's development is the most obvious: he goes from being a bully in the beginning to befriending Ren after the guy more or less saves he and his pokémon's lives. He does keep some old habits, but he never intentionally abuses people or pokémon again. |
Haruka: The basic idea sounds good, but as has been mentioned, I'd skip to the part where the mystery really starts.
Which of these two fanfic types do you prefer: short and intense or long and detailed? Both. I like following characters through a long, life-changing quest, but it's also refreshing to be able to read something short when I'm short on time and can't read anything too lenthy. How would your main character react to the sight of slaughtered children? Lisa would most likely be scarred for life. Wow, we're getting morbid here XD |
Which of these two fanfic types do you prefer: short and intense or long and detailed?
I actually like both, especially depending on how well written the story is. --- Can't say that the FFL has been that crazy as of late, then again, what people define as crazy, I might define as normal. Well, we could discuss how to properly describe someone who is getting shredded up... XD And on a related note: FFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU New Moon Soundtrack ad... |

Which of these two fanfic types do you prefer: short and intense or long and detailed? I prefer both, but I feel that writers tend to place more emphasis on character development in long fics, than in short fics, where the action is mostly plot driven. I prefer both, but I write long fics. How would your main character react to the sight of slaughtered children? Painful Indifference. As in, he would feel indifferent towards the sight, but he would be painfully annoyed of his inability to relate to the children's plight. Also, one more Bolded Topic to add to the pile: Do you prefer to review long fics where the author makes one or two mistakes and a logical error, or do you prefer to review short fics where it feels as though the author is out to break every rule in the English Language? |

I'll do a bit of both, though I find it is always nice that if and when I do review a short one, that the author does stick around (as more often than not, the short fics are done by people who are new here). Haven't read any in a while... Actually going to Latin exam soon. |

Wishing you the best ~Mizan A little positive reinforcement never hurt anyone when it comes to exams. |
Haha, thanks :) (It is one of my better subjects though too, at least whilst taking the bus I can study a bit).
Positive reinforcement and myself are like distance relatives... I hardly know anything about it... X_x Perseverance and hard work is what I preach... but have yet to practice it :S I don't think there has been one assignment this semester that I didn't complete the night before... I wonder what I can do about that... Though I realize it is all me in this case... Its not like some stupid self help book will help XD |
Which of these two fanfic types do you prefer: short and intense or long and detailed?
I'd have to say both. Long fics give a lot of room for character development and plot, but short fics can be just as powerful. How would your main character react to the sight of slaughtered children? She would never be the same again :P And thanks to everyone who gave me help on my idea. I'll be developing it more soon, but now I have a solid idea of what the plot should be like. |

...AHEM, that aside, it doesn't count if it's not spontaneous. Do you prefer to review long fics where the author makes one or two mistakes and a logical error, or do you prefer to review short fics where it feels as though the author is out to break every rule in the English Language? I'll go for the short one. First off, it is clearly the one in more dire need of being set straight. Second, the sooner a fic is reviewed, the greater the chance that the author will actually take the advice. If the story has already been dragging on for tens or hundreds of chapters while trailed by rabid fanbois/-girls, it's highly unlikely that anything I say will have any kind of impact. Preach where there is a chance to redeem, I say. |

The long one. I find that encountering mistakes in grammar really detracts from the reading experience, as it interrupts the flow and prevents me from really getting into the story. I'm always distracted by the mistakes :/ |
KWTH. The FFL has an alter ego now? /badjokejustignore
Um, hi. too many people crawling out of the woodwork u_u Anyway . . . Which of these two fanfic types do you prefer: short and intense or long and detailed? I like short ones, because I find it really hard to keep following a chaptered fic. There are many excellent ones here that I haven't actually read, but out of the ones I have (very few) I haven't been able to find one that compels me to follow it. idk why, it's probably to do with my up-myself-ness and stupidly high standards, but . . . I've been doing this with books lately too. I find it hard to find books that keep my attention, even if they're exactly the kind of book that I've devoured in a day or two in the past. I'm currently reading Heaven's Net Is Wide by Lian Hearn (she wrote Across the Nightingale Floor - you may have heard of or read it?), and it's great, but the last four books I got out of the library before that were hopeless. One of them, though, had a really interesting concept, even if the execution wasn't great. It was one of those 'what-if' books. This example was 'What if the Roman Empire hadn't fallen?' It's set in 2004, and the technology level is roughly equivalent to what we have now (except they often have stupid names - helicopters are called spiralwings and webcams are called longdictors). In this alternate Earth, the whole planet belongs to three huge empires. The largest by far is the Roman Empire, still run from Rome. It controls Europe, Africa, South America, the southeast half of North America (known as Terranova) and the western half of Asia. The second largest - and most aggressive - is the Nionian Empire, which is clearly a Latin corruption of Nihon, Japan. (Forgive me if I spelled it wrong) This empire controls the Asia-Pacific region, from Kamchatka down to Australia, and a large chunk of North America. The rest (China and central Russia) is the neutral Sinoan Empire. I never really got far enough to get into the storyline, but there seemed to be a war on the way. The Great Wall of Terranova (a big wall cutting North America in half) was breached by the Nionians, and blah blah blah. But the problem was this: the book itself was a piece of crap. The narrator voice drowned out the characters, character relations were stiff and unnatural, and the manuscript had evidently never met an editor. The narration is loaded with purple prose, and nothing ever really happens. In short, it's like the Inheritance trilogy. Wonderful in concept, but inherently flawed in execution. Does anybody else have any books/fics like this to moan about? It's a real shame, because in someone else's hands, the book could have been one of my favourites. There were endless opportunities for a wonderful storyline, the fusion of two of my favourite cultures, but the author just kept stubbornly refusing to take them. It's such a waste! So instead, I'm reading manga. *sigh* I discovered the other day that the library in town stocks volumes one through four of Code Geass, which really made my week. They also have Love Hina, Tsubasa Reservoir Chronicle and Ruruoni Kenshin, although there weren't any volume ones. I'm reading a lot of manga online, though, as a substitute for books, really. Haven't been writing much, either, though I hope to get back into that soon enough - the sooner the better. Shattered is begging for my attention. Dammit, I just got back from that tvtropes link I put in a couple of paragraphs ago. Eesh. Don't go there. Just don't. You will never come back unless you have extreme force of willpower, or an angry mum telling you to get your ass off the computer. Do you prefer to review long fics where the author makes one or two mistakes and a logical error, or do you prefer to review short fics where it feels as though the author is out to break every rule in the English Language? I actually prefer reviewing short, rubbishy fics by n00by authors that have no clue whatsoever. I don't know why; I guess I'm a little sadistic and like to tear people's stories to shreds. I don't flame, though. I always stop just short of that. If someone can't handle honest criticism, they shouldn't post their work. I actually get a little peeved when I see other people (who I know are good writers) reviewing rubbishy fics and saying they 'just need a little work' or something. I know you want to be nice, but some people need to learn to balance encouragement with honesty. I actually find it hard to do that myself, which is why I don't review anymore. Aaand in saying that, I just realised that I, in fact, don't review anymore. I hadn't thought of it that way before, but I guess it's true. I haven't reviewed anything since that fiasco back in . . . *checks* mid-October, where I left a somewhat snarky review on a friend's fic and subsequently got the crap flamed out of me by somebody who had no right to do so whatsoever. I deleted the review, which means that my last surviving review was probably back in September or even earlier, and used my Ignore list for the first time. Ah, don't mind me. I'm just moaning about things that happened ages ago and have no relevance to the discussion at hand. My mind tends to wander a little, especially when I'm in the kind of mood that I'm in now. I wouldn't know what to call these moods, actually. A little melancholy would probably be the best term to describe them. But all of a sudden, I feel a little better because the chorus of my favourite song just came on. The first chorus of Kimi no Shiranai Monogatari is the most beautiful sound in the world imo. I now feel kind of like writing, but what? Although I'm a little brighter now that supercell's playing, the melancholy is still there. But that's a good thing. It's all about finding balance, right? Balance is essential when trying to be creative, I find. It helps because you can never guarantee that your characters are going to be feeling what you feel like writing. If you're all cheery and relaxed, it's going to be hard to write characters who are watching Pokemon die in horrible ways. And if you're feeling depressed, it's hard to write characters who have just saved the world - on the opposite end of the continuum, so to speak. If you're writing characters who feel how you feel, sure, it's easy, but it's harder to connect with those on the other end of the sliding scale, whereas if you're sitting comfortably in the middle, you can reach both ends fairly evenly. You guys get what I mean? So let me ask this: How does your mood when writing affect developments in your story? Do you let it? And if you do, what influences said mood? Do you listen to your favourite music to brighten your mood, or what? K, that was, like, four questions in one, but chew on it for a while anyway. XD Sorry, solovino, you're doing a sterling job with that index. Round of applause for the man spattered with black ink. Gawd, where is that Shrike? It's like role reversal: I'm the one writing long posts and he's the one that's disappeared! ^_^;; Speaking of which, I wonder how long this post is going to go on for before I run out of material to discuss. I've been writing this, on and off, for an hour now. I guess I'm bored. I'm waiting for our Christmas tree to be delivered. Personally, I hate real Christmas trees. They're itchy, smelly, hard to put decorations on and a hell of a mess to clean up afterwards, what with all the needles and crap. Eh? Dad just passed my room, carrying the Christmas tree stand. I wonder if that means it's arrived? Either way, I'll probably be called out soon to help. Oh, man, that means I'll have to help decorate it, most likely this afternoon. That is, after the Santa parade (which I'm thankfully not attending) and before the Christmas barbecue. I am feeling so bah humbug this holiday season, and there's no logical reason for it. I'm not a big fan of celebrations in general; if everyone skipped my birthday, I wouldn't care at all. I thought Christmas was a Catholic holiday, celebrating the birth of the Messiah, right? So how did it evolve into nothing more than an excuse to get stuff? And I'm at the age where I'm really difficult to buy for. I don't do toys, I hardly play video games other than Pokemon and the occasional bout of Final Fantasy, and my parents have no idea what music I'm into. I've told them - entirely truthfully - that I wouldn't mind at all if all I got for Christmas was the new Muse album or something. Although I already know my sister bought me Hybrid Theory, which is pretty sweet. The point is that they're actually asking me what I want for Christmas instead of just expecting me to bring out a wishlist, like my sister does. If we got her everything on this year's list, plus all the other crap she's hinted at, the total would most likely come out to be over a thousand dollars. @[email protected] I want the old Christmases back, the ones you see in the fairy tales where the family just spends the day together, happily. Pulling crackers, eating the Christmas roast, maybe playing a new board game together or something. Playing SingStar and Buzz, or something of the like. Maybe spending an hour or so in the pool, because it's summer, and even though I hate swimming, I honestly wouldn't mind if everyone was there. Of course, I've done my Christmas shopping, most of it. The bookstore in town has a sellout sale going on, and I've done all my shopping so far there - two novels for Mum ($20), a cookbook for Dad ($15) and a diary for my little sister ($10) - which is all good, though I need something to go with the diary. I like giving people presents more than I like getting them - although spending large sums of money seems annoying as usual. The big companies and corporates have turned Christmas into a farce, a means to put more money in their fat wallets. People like my sister have gotten used to large amounts of presents, and the recession is putting pressure on parents. I'm trying to relieve some of that pressure by not being demanding, but it saddens me that I have to worry about money when it's Christmas. So basically, what I'm doing here is flipping the bird to those big corporations. It's nice of them to put on sales and all, but they're just commercialising what used to be a sacred holiday. I hate economics. I knew it was a good choice not to take it this year, even though I would have already passed NCEA level one a year early if I had. The world is slowly getting more dependent on money. It's always been an integral part of the way humans live, but . . . nah, let's not get into that now. Not enough energy Anyway, the tree just arrived. I think it's stupid that they chose a tree that was clearly too big for the living room. I just spent the best part of half an hour helping Dad chop half of it off so it would fit inside. :/ And even now it doesn't really fit properly. XD So tomorrow, while sister is at school and Mum and Dad are at work, I'mma wrap all my presents up and stick 'em under the tree. *tries to think of a way to connect all this crap back to fanfiction* Y'know, I'm tempted to post the Christmas oneshot I did last year. It's a whole load of crap, though. I seriously cannot believe I actually wrote it, but . . . actually, no. I'm notr going to post it here. If your curiosity is piqued, it's here. BAWWWWW, nooby lil' me. Please don't judge me by this. It's old and crappy, and the Jolteon beats up Celebi. Somehow. Because nobody really knows why Jolteon learns Pin Missile, but it seems to come in handy when trying to take down a legendary Pokemon so that it will fix Christmas for you. idk. I remember very little about this, and it's shameful just linking to it. So enjoy . . . or not. Most likely not, but we'll see. (PS: I know there's a rule against posting links to fics, but I'm pretty sure that doesn't apply to this. It's just an example) Ha, how do you like that? I brought it back on-topic (sorta). And Alter Ego, if you want any proof that the FFL is crazy, look no further than me. EDIT: MS Word tells me this post (excluding this bit) was 2,212 words long. If I could write this much in one morning on my fanfiction, I'd be set. @[email protected] |
*gives Misheard a cake for said post*
Finished the Latin exam. It consisted of 5 Latin to English questions and one English to Latin question, as well as a passage that was several sentences long. Needless to say, upon getting it, I looked at the questions, and was finding it difficult at first... Then knowledge and reason started to settle in, in which I started to remember what I had been taught, and vigorously began to write. Three hours for the exam, took no longer than two. Now just two more exams to go (History of English and Sociology). Didn't we already talk about Asti's sexuality at some point? Perhaps the topics aren't potent enough yet? Are we just that soft? Bah... that doesn't sound like us! We need something that is borderline removable but still discussable... XD |

Casey would run away, screaming into the night. Quickly. |
Which of these two fanfic types do you prefer: short and intense or long and detailed?
Short and intense. After reading too much boring and dry “literature,” I’m tired of the tree being described in three pages and nothing happening. Plus, I’m writing mystery and suspense at the moment, so the writing has to be that. Do you prefer to review long fics where the author makes one or two mistakes and a logical error, or do you prefer to review short fics where it feels as though the author is out to break every rule in the English Language? This question can be answered in many ways. XD If talking about review fics with chaptered fics or shorter fics, chapter. Like some people said, with shorter stories after I finished reading them sometimes I want to read more. I’m not fully satisfied until I’m full. :P However, sometimes it’ll depend the grammar and logical mistakes I’ll able to find. If talking about fics that are a few chapters in or beginning, the beginning. I just can’t write a good review if I’m playing catch up. If talking about what the question asked literally, I’ll go with the longer one with few mistakes. Even though the story might be shorter, it might take me a while to write a review to pinpoint or at least explain the mistakes the person did (which takes me a while because I try to find the right words ._. ). So let me ask this: How does your mood when writing affect developments in your story? Do you let it? And if you do, what influences said mood? Do you listen to your favourite music to brighten your mood, or what? I think this topic was asked before. O.o Then again, so many others. XD Anyways, I don’t. Usually when I feel in a bad mood I don’t write because I know when I go and read it back I’ll be like, what the heck did I wrote? XD |
