Just out of curiosity, does the TV show entitled "Between the Lions" mean anything to any of you? It was seriously like the coolest show ever

ChrisTom March 26th, 2010 8:17 PM

^ I used to watch that show all the time. My mom's a librarian so....

Anywho, I have some problems. It seems no matter what I do, people don't like or even seem to notice my fanfics. I think I need a good titler or something. I just wrote one like 2 days ago, and nobody has responded. This is my 5th fanfic (6 if you include my non-pokemon story). I'm lucky if I get 5 comments. Can anybody help me?!

Miz en Scène March 27th, 2010 12:52 AM

You win some you lose some I suppose. I've written three on PC, more elsewhere which are original(written with my real name) therefore not posted here, and most if not all that I've written on PC have only gotten one or two comments each. I can actually remember who commented on each.
NG-137 - Legendarian Mistress / BBS version: An-Chan
Reflection in the Storm - Bay
Tower Soliloquy- 0

There seems to be a principle here on PC that if you write at either side of the writing spectrum(either horrendous or extremely well written) you're more likely to receive more reviews either correcting your mistakes or commending your brilliant writing. Furthermore, the first thing that people look for is an interesting title or if the person who wrote it is a brilliant writer(though still that's not a solid guarantee). Then, when they actually click on the fic, they'll look at how long it is and some actually just go tl;dr. The last thing, if they actually read it, is that they'll read how well or interesting the exposition is before deciding to comment.

Protip: Some people work on the you scratch my back, I scratch yours principle. You review mine, I review yours. Simple, no?

Konekodemon March 27th, 2010 1:53 AM

Anyone have a Magic Knight Rayearth story pairing Zagato with an OC? None of this,"Write it yourself." Stuff either. If I could write one myself I wouldn't be asking.

Giratina ♀ March 27th, 2010 5:29 AM

You do consider yourself a fanfiction writer, don't you? If I'm able to write a drabble about a kid getting electrocuted into next week by a pack of angry Luxrays, then you can certainly write a romance story.

Send $25 USD to my Paypal, and then, we'll talk.

Feign March 27th, 2010 7:52 AM

Or there's people like me who haven't updated their main fic in like forever... (It's approaching a year now, scary...).

But I am glad at least that the next part is partially written.

I know I usually mis use punctuation... but I'd think people if they were reviewing would be kind enough to point it out.

Personally, I use Triond to get money from writing. Which is why you guys never see any of my original fiction here on PC...

You may want to get off the thought train because the point was at the stop it just passed.

To be clear, it was sarcasm. I was telling Konekodemon that if she really wants someone to write for her, I'd be happy to... if she paid me.

Yeahh, I'm terrible with metaphors...

The pay isn't that good, but until I'm fairly confident enough to go public and commercial it'll suffice.

*facepalms* Mizan, to be frank, it's nice that you're getting paid, but I'm not looking for a job. Moreover, I don't really care to look into Triond, and the fact that you're getting paid has nothing to do with my point. I was saying that if Koneko wants to request so nicely, I'd be happy to if she paid me. Hence why I was quoting her post.

Or, in shorter terms, I was being sarcastic.

Of the first post no, of the metaphor, completely.

Yes, I knew you were being sarcastic, I'm not that dense. No offense. I was just making a point of the fact that I made money using particular site because it was slightly related to your point of requesting money in exchange for writing. I wasn't intending to offer anyone money-making opportunities or implying that you might want to check out said site as an alternative.

Um, only vaguely. It's fine and dandy that you're making money, but it actually had very little to do with what I was saying because the topic isn't making money from writing. It's about Koneko requesting fic that she could easily write herself... which isn't the first time that happened.

And this is why I don't really post in the FFL anymore. Too many disjointed conversations. If it only slightly relates to the topic, chances are, you might want to find a different topic to attach it to. It makes one feel like you could pay a bit more attention to what's being said.

Getting reviews is mostly a matter of luck. Like Mizan said, I find that reviewing other fics tends to attract new readers that will review, so maybe that can help? If all else fails, there’s nothing wrong with directly asking someone to review.

Which has happened more than once and appear to be half of the conversations here in the FFL as I'm quite sure you're quite aware of. As with the rather weak example here.

Also, yeah, since I'm not up for arguing right here and now, I'll just admit my mistake and get on with regular lounge precedings...

. . . I'm over this. Totally. You appear here occasionally and do the same thing every time, and it's just a tad annoying, to be entirely honest. I suggest you do write it yourself, or perhaps request it on a board where a larger percentage of the population actually know the series you're talking about. This is a Pokemon forum, last I checked, and while we do have fics from other fandoms, I'd take a wild stab in the dark and say you're wasting your time.

Good day to you, sirs and madmans madams.

I used to watch it if it was on and there was nothing else to watch. It just never clicked with me. (Reading Rainbow apparently spoiled me to any other shows about books.) I was more of a Cyberchase watcher.

A lot of people have that problem across all sorts of forums. It's pretty much hit and miss sometimes. Constant advice given is to make sure that you have a good title (since on forums, that's the first thing that catches people's eyes) and just keep posting. Eventually, something will happen.

Another thing that might help is try to be active in the actual community. Review other people's stories (no bumping old threads, though), and hopefully the "I'll review you, and review me" philosophy that Mizan mentioned will pull through. Hopefully.

I should mention that some people are kind of busy playing Kid Icarus to review. Which happened to me. Oops. But...Kid Icarus!

There always seems to be a pattern that happens when you post.

You: Request fanfic based in another random fandom
Others: Um, write it yourself or ask elsewhere
You: I can't write!
Others: Well, none of us here know that fandom/want to write about a random OC/write romance
You: disappears until the next time

It happens every time. And, well, pattern recognition. It would help if maybe you requested a Pokemon fic (since this is a Pokemon community) that didn't have to have an OC character in there. People are iffy when it comes to OCs. Some people write them. Others don't. And those that do write them seem to only write about those of their own creation. (I know I do, and I'm not trying to speak for everyone else.)

Or you could try to write it yourself. Listen to the reviews you get, and don't shame a country. Do research. And things will go better.

Also, folks, I know that I silently wished for a more active section when I'm on vacation next week so I'm really not bored. But, I don't know... Try to be civil towards one another?

*skips off to her last five hours of work*

Oh well I guess I share your pain. Then again maybe I'm the cause of a bit some (φ-1)ths of it. :nervous:

Anyways, I jwas just spending some time reading here. Feels good as usual. It kinda motivates one to be civil towards others, Astinus but then this the Lounge we're talking about. ahem... I mean... and I'm sure we'll pull thru.

And since I don't recall many people picking on this topic,

Do you think 'real world' products, events and people/animals have a place in Pokemon fanfiction? Do you include them in your own fics?
Hełł yes I do! I mean, the games actually go to some lengths to make the Pokémon world look a different place, but then the blatant advertising makes it a whole "like reality unless noted" sort of thing, so why not take advantage of it. Like, OK, you can have the naughty-natured Giratina and for some extra fee you can have this SuperNintendo!!! Or a GameCube!!! And it kinda makes sense that there should be enterprises with dominant positions in aspects similar to out world. Not very similar to ours (I can't think of a Whiskas equivalent in the Pokémon world, for example), but when the case does apply, using a relatively familiar name (different enoough to avoid lawauits, of course) helps the narrative because it helps the reader emphasize with the idea of a world "beyond what is being written in". Not to exaggerate though-- I don't think the three and only three different drinks you can get from vending machines in all four regions are made by a Coca-Cola stand in (that it's only one is another matter), but to imagine that all those widescreen TV sets in the remakes are sold by something like Panasonic or that the One Truck was a sort-of-Nissan doesn't stretch things too much (in particular if you are from the "Pokémon World == Extended Japan" part of the fandom, which I'm not, but hey).

Anyways, I'm wall'o'texting again... I haven't had the chance to actually do them, but I've planned and written some freethinking scenes using names like Emron, Beanthec, Shill and Karonzee. Yeah, I'm not that good disguising brands. I also apply things that I am familiar enough with. For the first fics I did before the Pokémon fandom I actually did the thing inter-universe, like referring to Shinra's main competitor pre-Mako wars in the Final Fantasy Universe as Roxxon or the brandname of the relic stores in Final Fantasy VI being The Magic Box.

There are other brands I'm using right now, but since now I'm writing fic in Spanish you won't get to read it unless we're all lucky so maybe I'll talk about it later. For the moment I want to see more insanity here. On that line, what about the IRC/Skype Cabal?

We've had this topic once... once...(albeit on product placement) Lol, yes I do. It sometimes helps the readers relate to the fic in question much more closely than they usually would. Hell, in NG-137, Silver's driving in a modern BMW(considered antique) without a hydrogen engine.

Also, I was going to do some slight product placement elsewhere. XD

Well, after careful deliberation, you may. So long as you videotape it so I can see what happens. I just prefer the fun happening while I'm here so I can make bets on who will win as you fight each other TO THE DEATH for the amusement of the moderator.

There are times I want to call myself a monorail.

Maybe a different brand of cat food? Like Meowth Mix instead of Meow Mix, or something using Fancy Feast, Friskies, Alley Cat, 9 Lives... Actually, I prefer Meowth Mix. You can just picture the Meowth on the screen going "Meowth meowth meowth meowth."
