With Zoroark properly revealed, I just had to edit my original take on the guy to more so match. Now this is more of repose to a non existing sprite =P

Awhile back I mentioned that I'd be doing video critique, well I've finished the pilot episode. I take a sprite by an anonymous person and alter it. Being a pilot, I've yet to quite get it all right. As you'll see, I end up running out of time and have to use a fast forwarding method. I wanted to get everything in 10 minutes, but I have a nasty habit of taking too long to explain some stuff. Depending on what people think, I'll either make future episodes shorter, or keep them being longer. Since it is for the sake of critique, I may leave that to the original artists of the sprites I use.

Speaking of that, anyone is free to ask me to part of this. As explained in the video, just send me a private message. I'll only do something I want to do, or stuff I feel I can teach off of possibly. Of course be ready for me to possibly mock it in some way, but choosing to be anonymous is optional. The mocking will be of course merely for comedic value, and not serious. The overall purpose of this is to teach. If you're hard pressed to figure out how to improve, I think this will be able to help you.

There's something I don't like about your evolutions; they have the same palettes as their evolutions and Pre-evolutions.

Jappio March 10th, 2010 12:43 PM

That's not overly rare within the games themselves. Pokemon can retain the same palette between stages. Although I probably will try to remember to change them up some.

Well a good chunk of videos lately. However plenty of sprite creation tied into it too I feel.

Episode 1 now exists for my CnC stuff.

A contest gave me inspiration to fix up that Ice/Fighting Snowman of mine:
http://i140.photobucket.com/albums/r15/Profit_Jappio/Snowman.png

A person by the name of Icyblue created a drawing of a critter. He asked if I would sprite it, and I figured he was a cool enough guy. So here is the result:
http://i140.photobucket.com/albums/r15/Profit_Jappio/IcysFakemonthing.png

This is the a link to the original image:
http://img705.imageshack.us/img705/6369/vqm880.jpg

And a video of me actually spriting it. Basically Fakemon Demo 2:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ypk8kQJpzdk

Finally I also have an update to Super Poke World. Raichu is more completed, a couple of different enemies, and a special surprise at the end:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VFVejhy2cL4

gol March 20th, 2010 10:29 AM

Your sprites are good! But on the Icyblue sprite yours has 4 legs and Icyblue's drawing has 6... it's kinda weird for me. Also, to me the Spider Fakemon looks akward

Jappio March 29th, 2010 5:17 AM

Actually gol, that was a request from Icyblue, so the different leg number was on purpose. Probably should have stated that or something =P

Another bored day in class, another random sprite. This time around I try Paper Mario style and made an Octorok. I'll probably make a couple more things in this style, but probably will only bother while in class, cause actually school work is lame.

http://i140.photobucket.com/albums/r15/Profit_Jappio/PaperOctorok.png

Also have Episodes 2 and 3 uploaded now of my critique thing.

gol March 29th, 2010 12:44 PM

OH! That explains that, nice Octorok. I especially like it's expression, you did well there.

SethOmega March 31st, 2010 7:05 PM

Hello. I was wondering if I could use a few of these fusions in mah pokemon hack. I'll give credit in the readme (i haven't found a way to edit the title screen yet...). Please?

Jappio March 31st, 2010 11:44 PM

Here I am again making Fakemon that aren't my own. I need to learn to work on my own things once and awhile =P

The first one has two sizes because I wasn't sure which I liked better. Probably an inbetween would be best, but I think those two work fine. I can claim one is 3rd gen and the other is 4th gen =P

http://i140.photobucket.com/albums/r15/Profit_Jappio/Nikkiboysfakemon.png

Based on the designs of Nikkiboy029:
http://i13.photobucket.com/albums/a254/123456M1/blitzby_edited-3.png
http://i13.photobucket.com/albums/a254/123456M1/armarout.png

Now as some of you know I don't take requests. However this guy was awesome enough to make this for me:
http://i13.photobucket.com/albums/a254/123456M1/blitzby_edited-2.png
so I couldn't help but offer up a gift for him in return. I may do the 3rd evolution of his grass starter line if I get the time. I may even upload the video of me making the 2nd form eventually too.

Seriously though. When I first stumbled onto the thread with my little Blitzby all drawn up I was freaking. I never before have received free art like this, so randomly. Every other time I've either art traded or it was between friends. This is in a way like fan art, and that just flattered me beyond belief. So as a spriter, I feel I've in some way have crossed a milestone. I have now had something I made been so well liked someone wanted to draw it themselves.

Jappio April 7th, 2010 2:10 PM

This is just something I did while bored. No real purpose, just felt like spriting something, and the thing that came to my mind was a porcupine, although the quills are a bit short so some might see it more of a hedgehog. I honestly don't care.

http://i140.photobucket.com/albums/r15/Profit_Jappio/Porcupine.png

gol April 9th, 2010 5:41 AM

Whatever it is jappio, it's cute! (in a porcupine/hedgehog kinda way)

Astrotastic:D April 9th, 2010 11:45 AM

but some of their heads look sort of awkward and disproportionate...
but they are still really good! :D

More work done on my Link sprite. As you can see I'm going for a spin move animation. Finished two new frames for it. I will obviously add more frames in between and enough to obviously finish the whole move. I'll also need to make some glow and stuff for it.

Maybe it's just me, but the shield seems smaller in the right frame and the sword's handle is missing its outline.

The pose in the middle frame is quite good, pretty realistic. The right again feels somewhat awkward with the legs turned and the upper torso facing forward. And does the left frame show a slightly more muscular, more broad shouldered Link or is that me imagining things again?

Kerizix August 3rd, 2010 1:49 PM

I like those splices, they look like they could be in the actual game.

richmix August 5th, 2010 5:17 PM

Wow!! I REALLY like your fakemon. I like #647 and its evolvetions.

Jappio August 14th, 2010 12:47 AM

Thanks Scarf for the tips. I agree with pretty much everything you said, so don't worry too much, you were entirely inline with all your points. The only thing I'd disagree with is the leg comment. They sort of are suppose to be turned that way. I mean I tried doing the move myself, and beside looking like a dork for doing a Zelda spin move, the ninety degree angle between chest and legs was fairly natural feeling. However I'll still see what I can do to make it look a little better since I doubt I sprited it perfect.

Well all new Super Poke World stuff.

BTW, loved the torkoal evo.

Jappio August 16th, 2010 8:30 PM

First time doing back sprites, and would be happy to hear some feedback or advice.

A little background on this guy. Someone contacted me, wanting to do an art trade. I'm going to get a drawing of something, and in return I was to do make this guy for some hack he is doing. He gave me a few parameters, like making it have two bones and what not. The guys name is Raikumi and he hasn't named this yet.

http://i140.photobucket.com/albums/r15/Profit_Jappio/MarowhakEvo-1.png

Jappio September 22nd, 2010 4:23 PM

Wow, been quite some time since I've gotten anything finished.

More work on the Link sprite. I got two more frames, and now I was able to make a sort of beta animation. Now I do plan on making more frames. I'm thinking either a frame ever 60 or 45 degrees of the spin. I might get lazy and do some more blurring and less detail work, because having to always reshade and redo every little detail in each of these frames is a pain.

http://i140.photobucket.com/albums/r15/Profit_Jappio/LinkSpinBeta.gif

Here are the stilled frames for those who want to look at them more closely.

http://i140.photobucket.com/albums/r15/Profit_Jappio/5FrameExample.png

As always, I would love any comments or critisism you can give. I'm giving these sprites my all, but I know that probably won't be enough.

Oh and no one get their hopes up that I'm going to do anything 5th gen related. I want to stay as blind as possible to the new games until I get to actually play through one. I'm afraid to even be on the internet and risk seeing something in someone's sig =P

New Pokeworld video. Not much more to say than that I guess:

These are pretty good! I'm impressed. And the eraser tool in paint is helpful, might make my splicing and fakemon making easier. Customs and individual fills are tiring. XD

Jappio November 11th, 2010 11:03 AM

Finished up my redo of this line of Fakemon. Thanks to other projects I haven't been showing my Captace region the attention I owe it. However lucky for it, my spriting ability is better now, so hopefully they'll look even better as I go through them.

http://i140.photobucket.com/albums/r15/Profit_Jappio/Wizardline.png

A Psychic family line. Lizwiz, Lizgician, and Lizarlock. I'll soon get a video uploaded of me making the second stage soon actually. I'll edit it in here after work.

blackmoonflower November 12th, 2010 5:28 AM

Hahahahaha, for some reason they remind me of the magic koopas from my Paper Mario game. They look very nice. I'm not the best spriter, but I can't really point out anything to criticize.

OMG YOU HAVE TROGDOR

Jappio January 18th, 2011 1:45 PM

I've been asked a couple of times if I could do a tutorial on scratching sprites, sort of like I've done with splicing. I usually turned those people away, saying "I'm not a good enough spriter to teach scratching yet." Well I don't think I'm all that better yet, but I think I'm good enough that I could make a decent tutorial for it, even if I'm not a pro yet.

I will be doing a Fakemon as the example sprite for it, but hopefully I'll make the tutorial in a way that will apply to most sprite styles. I've written up a sort of rough outline for how I'd do it. It would be multiple videos, all split up into these categories. I know if I make it too long most won't want to follow, but I really want to hit on all points that I can.

Sorry this isn't me posting anything that could be consider true content. I haven't gotten any finished sprites to show since I've been jumping between projects and don't have anything that's ready to show quite yet for that.

Intro
- What is Spriting
- What it can be used for
- Scratching
- Overview of tutorial
- Explain what I'll be doing
- Explain I'll be making a Fakemon, but I'll do my best to explain other styles too as I go along

Concept/Planning
- Start off by explaining people should have a plan
- What will be the purpose of the sprite?
- Go over styles and games that they might choose from
- Show that starting with a hand drawn doodle can be a good way to start off
- Show off doodles and planning stages I have for the example

Basic Form/Line Art
- Introduce them to MS Paint
- Should explain programs like YY-CHR and others for game sprites alterations
- Start by showing two methods of basic form
- Blotchy method
- Doodly method
- Saving as .PNG
- Describe things like how to do curves
- Explain that looking at examples can help
- Fixing up and double checking stuff

Coloring and Shading
- Color choice
- Palettes
- Light sources
- Saving as .PNG
- Textures
- Form through shading

Finishing Touches and Posting
- Check around for errors and fixes that can be done
- Saving as .PNG
- Presentation choices
- Uploading
- Posting
- Dealing with critique and responses
- Closing

Since I am doing this to teach others, I do not mind at all if anyone makes comments on my plan so far for this. If you think there is something else I should include or explain, let me know, and I'll see if I can get it added.

Spherical Ice January 18th, 2011 1:49 PM

I think the Colour and Shading section should have a section on hue shading if you're confident on it. I really love seeing varied shading. I look forward to this tutorial. :D

Don't let that hold you back; the first Pokemon sprite I ever made from scratch was for my tutorial. :D

Jappio January 18th, 2011 3:02 PM

Just one question Spherical Ice, what do you mean by "Hue Shading" ?

I might know what it is, but I don't recognize the term.

Edit: Never mind, found out.

Jappio January 26th, 2011 1:46 PM

I really dont have much to say about this, do I? It's another set of Fakemon I guess.

I'm taking a risk with the lack of a border on the wind there. No Pokemon in 3rd gen really had just wind going about them, so there wasn't really a standard to go by there. Everything seems to almost always have some form of border, but the attack gfx for wind doesn't use borders, and some things like Ghastly's gas don't use a border, so hopefully my lack of it doesn't break too far away from the usual style GameFreak uses.

Here are some over-worlds I'm working on for a friend's RPGmaker game. Although I suppose that isn't all too important.

The little fox boy is a character of my friend, Red Ryu. The big guy is of course my usual Raizou guy.

The sprites are based/styled after some of the generic sprites from RPG maker.

Jappio May 6th, 2011 5:23 PM

I know it's been a bit, but some time ago I mentioned how I was working on a scratching tutorial. Well I finally took the time to go back to that in finish up a sort of intro. Now this isn't the finished product. Before I move onto the real meat and bones I wanted to sort of post this video and see what you guys think, a rough draft.

There's some extra fluff and added images in this intro just because I don't have anything to show off otherwise. Less padding will be in the actual learning videos since I'll have the actual sprite making to show off.

So any comments or tips will be appreciated. Hopefully the other parts won't be as difficult to edit as this one so they can get done in a timely manner.

Oh and I did some work with some Fakemon. Some of this isn't new, but a few tweaks here and there.

Put together part 2 of the scratching tutorial. Still not up to the true meat and bones yet, but it's getting there. All useful info I feel though.

Of course any comments are appreciated. I'd rather know something is wrong with my teaching method now rather than later.

Can I use Your Sprites????

Clusterfudge August 1st, 2011 2:24 PM

A lot of these are really neat, the colors flow well and the sprites are well thought out. The kangaskhan male's mouth sems a little strange and he doesn't have nostrils, loving the sprites though, they each are unique. :D

Jappio August 1st, 2011 9:42 PM

No PokemonYellowX, you cannot use them.

The Mega Man Legends series is one close to my heart. After 10 years of waiting for the Legends 3, I was happy to hear it was in developement. Yet now Capcom has canceled it and I want to do my part in fighting for it to come back.

So I made a little sprite image. Mega Man combined with Gurren Lagann? Surely something awesome can convince Capcom to again continue to make it!

Row row, fight the powah!

http://i140.photobucket.com/albums/r15/Profit_Jappio/LegendsNeverDie.png?t=1312262440

Data was some scratching. Mega Man and his Giga Drill are sprite overs from the show. I was lazy with the background and just used the background from the Ace Attorney games (Think of that laziness as just a way to show my support for another Capcom screw up, not localizing Investigations 2 =P)

So if your a fan of the Legends series, Mega Man, would be awesome 3DS games, or stopping corporations from killing off great franchises, you should all join the fight! There's a Facebook group getting people. We're already past 37,000 people, and we're always growing.

Let's just say I really think this can work. I've seen smaller fan gatherings get things done. This could mean the future of Mega Man, and who doesn't love the blue bomber?

Clusterfudge August 2nd, 2011 3:49 PM

DAT DRILL is BIG AS FU-Ahem, that is great, the drill should probably have a third shade between the darkest and lightest so it isn't so much of a contrast, but very solid, I enjoy your work.

blue August 2nd, 2011 4:18 PM

Nice sprites, nice work, unique!

Jappio October 11th, 2011 2:12 PM

I have finally done it. I have finished the spriting tutorial.

This is it, every video.

I will reiterate, you should watch all parts. The main meat I will admit are in parts 4 and 5, but useful information is in each, all of which can help you become a better spriter.

Jappio November 11th, 2011 2:05 AM

A number of reasons.

1. You didn't even have the decency to tell me specifically: what sprites in specific, why you wanted them, what you wanted them for, or anything else along those lines that might be useful to me. I can only assume based on some of your other posts and threads that you wanted my Fakemon for some form of hack.
2. I don't like giving permission for my sprites out. Too many people ask, but for the few times I've said "yes" in the past, nothing comes of it. I'm not a fan of attaching my name to even more uncompleted projects. I also don't like getting my hopes up that some use will come of it.
3. People ask for my sprites, but I don't know why. If your looking to use them for a hack or something, I'm curious why people ask me. I have no back sprites and won't be making back sprites for a long time. Pokemon sprites are useless without those, and if you aren't able to make your own sprites (hence why you're probably asking someone else for some) then what good do my sprites do you? If you know someone who can make the back sprites, then why do you need my front sprites? It doesn't make sense to me. If you can't even realize that, I hardly expect the hack you plan to use them in will get far.
4. You grammar and way with words implies someone who isn't serious. A serious person who really wanted to recruit me for a project would try to set it up to a deal. Would try and convince me to help them. They would spell things out properly, explain everything, and tell me why I should. They wouldn't act so casual about it. You can't even bother to properly tell me much and haven't bothered to even capitalize your own words. A show of disorganization and lack of seriousness. How am I to believe you will take my sprites and make magic with them, when you can't even ask to properly?

So overall, it's because clearly you can't be trusted to represent them properly. I'm picky, stingy, paranoid, selfish, mean, arrogant, and plain just don't trust letting just anyone use my sprites. You made a bad first impression, failed to make any attempt to sell me on it, and your follow up question has come off as whining more than anything else.

I do hope that answers your question adequately.

Snivy063 November 11th, 2011 8:07 AM

Jappio December 16th, 2011 12:37 AM

I do have names for most of my Fakemon. Pix, Angeta, and Devi are the names for those three.

Two more Fakemon updates.

I actually kept the old version of the poison dragon as a base and just altered it. First time I think so far where the old form was kept as a base like that. Hopefully that means things will start to be easier like he was going into more.

I wish I could call these scratches or actually be scratching them. Yet they are suppose to go with some already premade NPC type sprites, so I have to keep style, and with overworlds, unless the person your doing is really weirdly shaped, that's sadly not possible. So a lot of things like the legs and stuff are almost identical looking, even though I didn't use the originals as a base =/

Oh well, still happy with how they are coming out. Only two more party members, and then I might move onto the in battle sprites.

I'd just like to say thank-you jappio, you got me into spriting when I watched your splicing video, I love all of your work please keep on posting!!!

Jappio January 8th, 2012 5:29 PM

No need to thank me, I should thank you for enjoying my works thus far!

Ok, this sheet is now done and full. I'm happy with the outcomes personally, but as always I'm open to any comments you all might have.

I love the persian evolution, and the devil, I think pokemon should be a bit more fierce these days, I mean they are animals after all, intelligent yet still animals, so I really like the smoke dragon, It's super cool! I wonder what a stunfisk evolution would look like???

Jappio January 12th, 2012 3:10 AM

Well, just a little fooling around as usual. This may or may not see some type of future use. My friend has this little character known as Goo. Just a little blob guy. There is a game he is meant for, something Kirby esque as far gameplay and such (this is why I decided to make him in a Kirby style). I don't know if there will be any actual game though, which is why there are only three actual sprites for the time being.

In the animation, there are two different styles. The first few frames have him moving, using his standing frame in the middle of the movement, yet in the later half of the animation I don't use the standing frame. Wasn't sure which looked better.

Background was ripped from Kirby: Nightmare in Dreamland by HyperGumba.

http://i140.photobucket.com/albums/r15/Profit_Jappio/TestWalk.gif

And since this was a minor update, I messed around a little and made a familiar face in a style I'm not use to making him in.

Jappio January 17th, 2012 3:24 PM

Ledian evolution bothered me a ton. Just couldn't figure out a design I liked for him for the longest time. Finally was able to settle on that, and I'm quite happy with how it turned out.

http://i140.photobucket.com/albums/r15/Profit_Jappio/3rdgenFakemonSheet6.png

Jappio January 20th, 2012 7:40 PM

Potentially the style we'll be using for the RPG.

Ryu looks weird when he isn't super short. Not sure on size yet, probably going to wait till I get a few of the other characters made, and then I'll decide.

A few options for fur colors. Going to talk to the character's creator to pick one.

The guy on the left is from Soul Nomad. I'm a fan of NIS style sprites, and this style I think will allow us to show off our character's designs well. A lot of thought has to be put into this type of thing though, so we might abandon the style. We have to keep in mind enemy sprites too, and how we handle them.

So I know it's probably not best to start working on the sprites like this before I get the creator's input, but I was in the mood to sprite something like this, so if we decide to do something else, then so be it.

Jappio January 25th, 2012 3:07 PM

Well here we go, Team Rocket is pretty much complete.

I apologize for Jame's green hair. Trust me, I spent I think over an hour trying to change it. From the research I was able to dig up, you can't apparently change the palette on Bowser's sprite, so I don't think I will be able to alter it myself. I hear with enough hacking skill one can though, so actual hacks using these sprites will hopefully have people who can bother to change it.

Also for anyone out there who might be kind of stupid: The music, voices, and the zooming in are not in game. It is just video editing.

Changing Peach and Mecha Koopas will come later. Probably Wigglytuff and Wobufette. Might still do a joke switch of Peach for Ash in dress. Not sure if I'll stick with just Ash in dress, or go with his female counterpart from the Erika episode. Female counterpart could make sense canon-wise, Ash in dress would be more recognizable. I guess I can always just do three version too.

This looks really good :o

Jappio January 29th, 2012 6:42 PM

Could use a little bit of help everyone.

Working on some Fakemon, I was liking where I was going, then bam!

I now have three different designs for the 'eye' on his back. I wasn't intending it to be a real eye, just sort of a pattern. Yet I can't decide between the few ways I have it drawn. The first is nice and simple, but I worry about how it doesn't stick out well. The second sticks out a little better, but something seems off. The third sticks out great, but it's starting to look too real, too complex for a simple marking possibly. As I'm typing this, I tried turning the first one's color around so the eye was black instead of purple, and that might work.

So does one in particular look nice to any of you? Is there perhaps a 4th option that might work better? I tried a few other color combinations too, but I just don't know. Any comments, CnC, or critique would be greatly appreciated!

http://i40.*.com/1ikk5t.png

Sheep January 29th, 2012 6:58 PM

I'm definitely going to go with the third one here.

In my opinion, the purple in the first sprite blends in a lot with the red and it's difficult to really pay attention much less notice what it is; in the second, the black detracts attention from everything else (I imagine something lighter and not darker colors or black in that spot). It's too eye-grabbing and doesn't seem to match the sprite overall. I think the third version is best when it comes to sprite appeal and how well it matches the rest of its design.

Jappio January 30th, 2012 12:40 PM

Ok, so opinions on which is best are all over the place right now =P

Seriously, for the most part, all three designs have been equally liked seemingly.

So to complicate matters, I made even more designs:

http://i39.*.com/dcg41w.png

I have some new palettes and a new eye design.

Right now I'm leaning towards 16, but I'd still love to hear what everyone else thinks.

IceyPinkLemons January 30th, 2012 2:06 PM

I like 13. The repeated purple and black theme with the eye pattern really catches your eye. 16 seems a bit bland to me...

ross-z January 31st, 2012 9:07 AM

Definately 13, this is one of my fav's out of alll your sprites!

Jappio February 8th, 2012 9:09 AM

So voting on Ariados evolution didn't yield a perfect result. Overall, it was almost even between realistic and non-realistic. non-realistic had just a few more votes for it, and I personally liked it better. Sadly I now know that not everyone will like the choice I went with, but 51% at least will =P

Missile Pokemon is no longer an ice type. Ice skates weren't enough of a reason to make it an ice type, and I couldn't really come up with a different way to do it. It's all fine though, because I think it turned out better by going a more simplistic approach.

http://i140.photobucket.com/albums/r15/Profit_Jappio/3rdgenFakemonSheet6-1.png

Jappio February 10th, 2012 12:51 PM

Did some fiddling around with Link again. Rather than add frames, I've decided to take some advice and add blurring instead.

Still not done with it yet. Still need to do the magic portion of it all, and a bit more movement in things like his hat and hair. Just sort of a progress update.

http://i140.photobucket.com/albums/r15/Profit_Jappio/Withblurring.gif

Jappio February 23rd, 2012 5:53 PM

Nothing too serious or special. Was bored and toyed around with trying to sprite something with only one 'color'. Aka, I chose a color, and only altered the lightness and darkness. No hues shifting. Went with my second favorite Pokemon, Sandslash.

Finally got this sheet done. I've dropped the Qwilfish line, and just went with a platypus line.

Hydra is like way better now, I'm very content.

Narlight is pretty similar to what he was in the old days. One of the few things I did back then that I liked and felt I did a decent enough job on.

Comerion April 10th, 2012 11:44 AM

Wow look at all the views on this thread. Mind you its an old thread xD
Anyway nice sprites. Its nice to see an improvement, good job.
On the platypus line, the ridge on the beak is rather off-centered on both sprites but mainly the second one. Also, on the second one, its arms are kinda weedy for its size, which I think makes the anatomy look off. Lastly, it looks a little fat, unless that's what you intended. However good job on them and the others too, very nice use of dithering.

Jappio May 20th, 2012 1:25 PM

I know I haven't been posting anything, but that's because my spriting has been mostly involved with a contest. Now that it's done, I'll post the stuff I'd been entering:

http://i140.photobucket.com/albums/r15/Profit_Jappio/Flan.png
A flan recolor. Was first round, and I just thought this would be silly. I have a Ditto I nicknamed pudding, so that's kind of where the idea came from.

on the latest update ...
although I do not really like the shape of the evolution of Spinda, is well developed in shadows, outlines, ...

good luck ..

I know I've been like super slow with updates lately. Not sure why, I just haven't been spriting very often. I've done a little poking around, but no results to show yet. I was working with Poke World, but editing the Koopalings has thus far been obnoxious. I'd link to a video of the work I did on it, but it's pretty bad and I'm usually against showing off work that the maker knows is bad. I'll try and tweak it to the best I can do when I'm more ready to tackle that.

Yet I finally finished up the over worlds for that RPG I'm working on. Next up will be battle sprites.

http://i140.photobucket.com/albums/r15/Profit_Jappio/AllprotagonistOverworlds.png

All 8 protagonists are now done. Ryu is the main character, dual swords and wind magic. Raizou is my usual big buff axe and lightning wield Asgardian. Shun-Yu is the wacky Chinese Hopping Vampire. Moonblade is a mystic sword user type. Ray is a mixture of black and white magic. Shroomette is a blatant visual rip off and healer. Vargas is the team mimic, he copies spells and what not. Ira is a black mage. The columns sort of represent the character owners.

Those are really good! I like the Toadette Shroomette sprites, but the Shun-Yu ones are also really good.

You going to get back to Fakemon again? I'd like to see some more of those old Fakemon re-made, especially #602 and #603. As for the ice cube one, I think it could use a better evolution, because the old second stage looks mostly the same.

Jappio March 12th, 2013 2:25 AM

Well... it's been awhile. This is sort of awkward.

So yeah, I haven't updated in awhile. The reason: I sort of forgot to post here. Getting a new laptop meant setting up my bookmarks manually. For some reason I forgot to mark this place, so every time I did some new spriting, I sort of didn't think to jump here either since I just go through my bookmarks.

Well, time to just sort of dump all the new stuff in one go:

All the Super PokeWorld Stuff I'll put here:

http://i46.*.com/2ewcvap.png
A trainer sprite round.

http://i140.photobucket.com/albums/r15/Profit_Jappio/Shroomette.png
Here's just a little something I ended up making by mistake. Sometimes I'll open paint, draw a few lines, make some dumb pattern, and close it off without saving. This time I ended up drawing something that looked like an upper torso, then I drew some lines to make the dress shape, and then I realized it looked a lot like that humanoid Toadette I always make.

So yeah, that's why this exists. I took my doodle and went with it since it wasn't looking too bad for once.

Wow, when I post it like that, it really doesn't look like I've been doing much spriting in the last couple of months.

Jappio April 9th, 2013 8:54 PM

So, some of you might remember that there was a little rabbit Fakemon I did that had a hat that was on fire. Well I ditched the idea for a poison rabbit instead. Ironically, after deciding on that, I ended up having a good reason to give it a similar hat. No evolution anymore, but this little plague rabbit may be a single piece to a set I have an idea for.

http://i140.photobucket.com/albums/r15/Profit_Jappio/Plagbit.png

Also here is a video of me spriting it.

Some more Fakemon work.

I took the bush dragon concept and extended it an extra evolution since I'm dropping the pine-tree Fakemon I made.

http://i42.*.com/2cx4ds.png

I also again figured I'd start up my recording software while I was making the last form for those of you who like seeing the creation process:

Jappio May 2nd, 2013 2:18 AM

Well, I decided I wanted to practice poses, animations, and stuff, so I did some practice.

Ugg, this is a nightmare. I'm usually against posting stuff I know is bad, but this is a case of me not being sure where I went wrong, and I spent too many hours on this otherwise. Not sure if it's the general anatomy I'm messing up, what frames I ended up using, or where I have the sprite itself positioned. Any comments or critique welcomed.

I also have a bunch of the different stages of work I did. Here they are, in order of their creation.

http://i140.photobucket.com/albums/r15/Profit_Jappio/AnnaRunDone.gif?t=1367488916

I didn't know who to use for the longest time, but I eventually settled on Anna from Fire Emblem. If I had ended up doing better than I ended up with, I might have put in more detail and shading.

Obliveon May 2nd, 2013 8:01 AM

With your pokemario project, don't you think Cacnea would be better for a Pokey than Voltorb?

Jappio May 5th, 2013 10:19 AM

Well, there are a few reasons I feel I should keep Voltorb.

One would be the shape. Cacnea's have arms and junk. Not something that can't be implemented, but Pokey is just a bunch of balls stacked.

Another reason is that it makes sense to have a bunch of faceless Voltorbs for the body. I mean those are just Pokeballs. Faceless Cacnea is a bit weird.

Thirdly, I want to keep it restricted to mostly just 1st gen, with a bit of the other gens only bleeding in when I have to. Not so much for me, but more so for the sake of people who only know the original stuff.

Here is some more of that PokeWolrd stuff.

Ok, still practicing things like animation. After a tutorial in animating, I'm starting with the very basics now:

http://i140.photobucket.com/albums/r15/Profit_Jappio/BouncingBall.gif?t=136916582

I know it' super simple, but basics are important from what I hear.

Logiedan May 21st, 2013 12:34 PM

As in terms of animation, don't forget that you are missing a lot of the stretch effect from the squash & stretch from the ball. When the ball is moving downwards and upwards, to have a more dynamic animation you can create a stretching effect of the ball.

Jappio May 26th, 2013 6:50 PM

Thanks for the tip =)

I did try to do a bit of stretching in it, but I get paranoid sometimes when it comes to exaggerating an action too much sometimes, so it's a tad too subtle I suppose.

Ok, so moving on:

For the RPG I'm helping make, I figured I'd use my next step of practice on it. Battle sprites of course need to be made, so I decided to take the protagonist and make him an attack animation.

So obviously, I'm not done. However I'm at a crucial stage right now. Obviously I need to actually sprite the character, and not just his skeleton. Beyond the obvious lack of details though, I need to decide where to speed things up, slow things down, and add frames. This is all a very rough 'WIP' and I'm just sort of looking for some second opinions.

I know I need a frame for bridging between the last and first frames. I'm not sure where to go for the slices though. More frames might slow it down too much. I know animation wise, more would be nice, but on a sprite/game level you don't typically want too many frames in a movement like that, right?

I'm also unsure on things like the poses through them. I did my best to act out these actions, and those are what I felt I was doing, but I'm also not an official sword/axeman.

Oh well, that's why I'm taking a moment to stop an get some thoughts if possible, or in the very least let my head clear and come back to it.

http://www.iaza.com/work/130527C/iaza17900587571500.gif

Logiedan May 26th, 2013 8:25 PM

It's hard to spot missing details without more flesh in the animation, but I think it lacks more twist. Like more bending to the knees added with more frames in the end to have a clean finish.

You can add some extra frames right before the first swing as well to smoothen it even more, but make sure the actual axe slash/swing stays very few frames as possible.

Jappio June 24th, 2013 8:27 PM

Well, I've finally got some work done.

http://oi39.*.com/2z70c95.jpg

Not fully complete yet, however I wanted to get another gauge of how I was doing. Below, I have a comparison of all the different frames I have.

http://oi42.*.com/24m58px.jpg

I plan to probably add frame 2 back in. However for the rest... I'm not sure. I've gotten a mix of suggestions of what to do. I think what I have so far technically is passable (I'll have to do this and more for all the characters, so on the laziness side of things, I'd like if things weren't more complex than this). I mean more than 4 frames for a simple RPG attack animation is a bit much.

In general I'm still bad at setting the speed for the actual frames. I think I have something like: 1 - 3 - 3 - 5 - 5b - 7 - 7b - 1.

I don't know if I'm being lazy by not wanting to add more frames. I see where maybe I could add some, but I'm wondering if it's necessary for something as simple as a 16-bit style RPG.

I've missed a few small details on the sprite too I've realized. A tail, the ends of his belt that hang off the front, but I have the basic gist of it all here so far. Also that frame 2 I wanted to re-add.

Comments, critique, or whatever is all welcome of course.
