EV training is it worth all the time?

I only ev trained a Swampert and Swellow before and I really think Ev training is too time consuming. First off you have to figure out what pokemon gives off an ev and some give off more than that type of ev. Therefore, I would have to use a sheet of paper to keep track of my parties evs. Secondly, I feel that it is very extraneous to have to battle like a gazillion Zubats to raise speed for example. Anyone feel the same way? Ev training is just too much for me is there any other options to get pokemon stronger besides just leveling them up?

Rave Dragon May 15th, 2008 10:42 AM

I agree with you about it being time-consuming. Especially for more casual players. I'm still going to EV train my team, but over a verrrrry long period of time.

El Gofre May 15th, 2008 10:45 AM

It's an all or nothing thing really. If you play competetively you will never win unless you EV train. It is that vital. If you're not willing to do it then you'll never really succeed so you've wasted your time on the two.

But yeah, its needed if you're gonna challenge any of the leagues ect running here. You'll be suprised how easy it gets after the first 6 or so, I can EV one in a couple of hours nowadays

Wichu May 15th, 2008 10:45 AM

With the power items, obtainable at the Battle Tower, you only have to beat 26 each, of lets say Zubats and Gastlys if you have Pokérus. Hardly gazillions.

And if you don't EV train, you're going to lose to people who do 90% of the time.

EDIT: It really doesn't take long once you get good at it - I've EV trained around 20, and it only takes me an hour to fully EV train a Pokémon now.

Sweet Speed May 15th, 2008 11:06 AM

It depends on the type of trainer you are. If you are casual then don't bother because it's going to take forever, however, if you're a competitive player then you have time on you hands then do it.

You have to anyway to get stronger Pokemon.

Alakazam17 May 15th, 2008 11:24 AM

Ummmm....

Pokerus + Power Anklet + battle 22 Fearow = Max Speed EV's

22 is far from being a gazillion, XD

subaku May 15th, 2008 11:30 AM

I agree that as tedious as EV training can be at times it is very necessary. For me when my pokemon is weak in one area I EV train it in that area to help make up for the lack of it. In the long run you need it...badly.

Alakazam17 May 15th, 2008 11:32 AM

it's better to improve their strengths, not their weaknesses. For instance, you'd be much better off giving Alakazam max Special Attack rather than max Defence. ^^

El Gofre May 15th, 2008 11:51 AM

Alakazam's right, what's the point in EVing a weakness? If its a bad stat it's obviously not meant to be used, and your other stats end up suffering because of it.

Moana Kai May 15th, 2008 1:36 PM

I agree with Rave Dragon, EV training your pokemon takes along time, I'm still training my pokemon from the first time pokemon diamond and pearl came out.

MBXfilms May 15th, 2008 3:38 PM

Breeding is more of a pain then EV training.

DSLitegamer1994 May 15th, 2008 5:29 PM

yea it does take a long time to E train but it's worth it,you'll lose so many times if you don't E triain your pokemon
First:80% you'll win the match
second:you can show off your ev trained pokes to your freinds or anyone
third:makes you become a good trainer
fourth:its a challenge especially to be who are a newbie to it,and so on
most of the time you'll be losing if you don't ev train your pokemon,it makes you become a good trainer and, hey you might ev trian other people(s) pokes for shinys or events

solopy567 May 15th, 2008 5:35 PM

All depends on how you play

Competitive: Ev train
Casual: No ev train

POKEMASTERALEX May 15th, 2008 6:00 PM

Alright, it is definitely worth it to ev train. Once you get good at it you find many ways to achieve your training that much faster. I can ev train a pokemon in an hour tops and so can most trainers. There are many faqs that can help you too. If you need to know faster ways I, or anyone else here, can point you in the right direction. In the end, being able to focus your pokemon's stats in certain areas will be super beneficial

Volkner's Apprentice May 15th, 2008 6:13 PM

EV training takes time to master and some trading so you can get the right items. Pokerus plus the power items..if you can get that much, you can EV train a Pokemon in speed in 25 minutes and spend another half hour on attack, and you'll be all set.

Like it's been said: you can raise regularly all you want, but if you don't EV train, your going to lose 9/10 times. I've battled with a mix of EV trained and non-EV trained guys and came to the conclusion only heavy natural walls or the starter Pokemon can really handle themselves in wifi competition without being EV trained. Add some EVs to them and it spells B-E-A-S-T across the screen.

Patchy May 15th, 2008 10:55 PM

Or you could find a Pokemon that gives 3 of a stat, get one, remove all its attack moves, get Pokerus and a Power item and chain Ditto. Let them transfrom and voila. :)

~Swish~ May 16th, 2008 1:11 AM

If you want to be the best, you need to work at it. EV training is one of a number of things crucial to train your Pokemon in to become sucessful at competitive battles.

Storm-DC May 16th, 2008 1:20 AM

learn to use the power items and pkrs. also: you can gain 100 EVs in a stat by giving vitamines for that stat to your pokemon.

You can get them all by battling in the Battle Tower and getting a certain number of points to buy them. Not sure if you can get them anywhere else, possibly, but I can't be bothered to check XD

You may just want to ask or find some in the trade section of the forums though to save time.

DCFC_Woody May 16th, 2008 2:08 AM

I never really tried it but as soon as I fill the nation Pokedex thats my next mission

Am currently working on having every pokemon with the OT as Woody or just special event pokemon OTs

And Tonight I will have a Pokemon XD : Gale of Darkness Lugia :D:D:D:D W00000t

Supreme Dirt May 16th, 2008 4:28 AM

Oh, and if you decide double battles are your thing, make sure to give your Pokemon defensive EVs. Or it'll get killed if you come across some n00b with a team of fast, frail sweepers. If you survive their sweeper's attacks, you can then destroy them... (Thinks evilly of Shuckle)

But no, not a waste of time. Shuckle's ridiculous defenses are offset by it's low HP. Obvious solution: 252 HP Evs, and Leftovers.

Jack Surge May 16th, 2008 6:12 AM

Well, considering I have a store of pokemon infected with pokerus in my PC, and I have the power items, I can usually finish EV training a pokemon in an hour, maybe two hours tops. Seriously, in D/P, it is much easier.

tkay1493 May 16th, 2008 6:39 AM

EV training does make a HUGE difference! I have over 3 boxes of pokemon fully EV trained. Ity took me a while but they are pretty strong now!

Tallulah May 16th, 2008 6:57 AM

It's hard and long to do if you've got none of the items that make it easier I think. I still do it though, me and my friends all agreed to play with EVed pokemon and the difference is crazy. I've got 2 Modest L50 Starmies in Diamond, one EV trained with 167 Special attack and 252 SpAtk EVs and the other raised against random pokemon so its EVs are all over the place and it has 121 Special attack.

Glurak May 16th, 2008 7:54 AM

I train only my IV-Pokemon but it's really time-consuming.
I'm chaining Pokemon and look how many EVs it give and become a Shiny Pokemon with this^^
But the most of my time I breed the Pokemon and let other people train my Pokemon in other boards(most 3 IVs on EV for 1 IV).
So I can breed the Pokemon and other people train them for me on the excatly EVs.
It's too time-consuming for me, when I have to breed IV-Pokemon

KantoJohto May 16th, 2008 6:39 PM

Ok you guys have emphasized how important it is for the pokemon so I will start ev training. Only problem is how do I know how much evs they would have now? I mean they are in their 35-40s so surely they would have evs already so how can I check? How do you guys keep track of the evs?

Gym Leader Wallace May 16th, 2008 7:57 PM

I keep track of my Evs by making tallies on a paper.

KantoJohto May 17th, 2008 6:47 PM

Yeah that's what I had to do but can someone answer my last post??

dynoma5 May 17th, 2008 10:06 PM

I do agree that EV training is a bit time consuming but I think it's worth it if you're going to battle other ppl. Having some of the power items from the battle tower/frontier really helps. Counting track of EV is really annoying though. Once I started EV training i finish it so that I won't forget. I used the counter on the pokewatch

Murasaki May 18th, 2008 9:55 AM

There's no way of checking your EVs.
