Pokemon Showdown

Do you have what it takes?

The Pokémon Video Game Showdown is a BATTLE of the best Pokémon Diamond and Pokémon Pearl players from Japan and the United States. Compete at one of two Qualifier Tournaments for a chance to be the best in your age group at the Pokémon Video Game Showdown in Orlando, Florida this August.
A giant Pokemon tournament? Sounds good. Too bad the qualifiers are so far away from where I live- I even got 16/20 on their quiz.

What gets me, though, is the rules for the matches:

Quote:

Battle Rules:

Battles are played using the 2-on-2 format.

A player’s team must consist of exactly 4 Pokémon. Players may change Pokémon between rounds, though each Pokémon must still meet the rules outlined in this document.

A player’s team may not contain two of the same Pokémon.

Each Pokémon on a player’s team must be level 50 or lower.

Each Pokémon on a player’s team may use held items, though no 2 Pokémon on a team may hold the same item. Players may change held items between rounds. Allowed items include held items from Pokémon Diamond, Pokémon Pearl, and earlier video games, including Berries 1-60. The Soul Dew item may not be used.

Players may not enter two Pokémon with the same nickname.

Players may not enter a Pokémon nicknamed with the name of another Pokémon character (ex: a Lucario nicknamed “Spiritomb”).

Players found to have inappropriate/offensive Trainer names or Pokémon nicknames, as determined by the event staff, will be disqualified from the event.
Level 50 double battles? Item clause? No sleep clause? Not to mention the Pokemon that aren't allowed for use:

Quote:

Pokémon Restrictions:

Players may use Pokémon found in the Pokémon Diamond and Pokémon Pearl National Dex, between 001 and 491, including those Pokémon imported from earlier video games, with the exception of those Pokémon listed below.

The following Pokémon are ineligible for use in the tournament:

* 149 - Dragonite
* 150 - Mewtwo
* 151 - Mew
* 248 - Tyranitar
* 249 - Lugia
* 250 - Ho-Oh
* 251 - Celebi
* 382 - Kyogre
* 383 - Groudon
* 384 - Rayquaza
* 385 - Jirachi
* 386 - Deoxys
* 483 - Dialga
* 484 - Palkia
* 485 - Heatran
* 486 - Regigigas
* 487 - Giratina
* 489 - Phione
* 490 - Manaphy
* 491 - Darkrai
Dragonite? Tyranitar? Geez, Nintendo...

Either way, this could be interesting. Discuss.

er?

i find it strange how tyranitar and dragonite are banned, you the other pseudo-ledgendaries (garchomp, salamence) are not.

even latias/latios are not banned, but im pressuming that soul dew is banned?

It's possible that it's because they evolve at a level higher than 50, violating the level 50 rule. Which is a stupid rule, but I digress.

Woah, I just noticed this. Awesome. In addition to Scarf + Dark Void Smeargle, we're gonna see a lot of Latis.

Espreon May 17th, 2008 9:09 AM

The Soul Dew is banned... But why would they ban Phione... it makes no sense!

revelp8 May 17th, 2008 9:12 AM

they've banned dragonite and tyranitar because of the level 50 clause, seeing that they evolve at 55. and it also looks like they're planning to use the local wireless battle restriction, hence the level 50 or lower. i dunno, maybe its worthwhile?

Silhouette May 17th, 2008 9:20 AM

Double battles? Is that what they want?

It's different, a level 50 tournament with doubles. I wonder if that'll attract anyone? Because I know a lot of people who use Dragonite/Tyranitar.

El Gofre May 17th, 2008 9:57 AM

I'm laughing at the level restriction so hard. They're limiting movesets, leaving unremarkable pokes like 'Nite banned and beasts like garchomp in. EV training is likely to be incomplete leading to erratic stats, i could go on all day.

This entire system is retarded. Double battles are gonna lead to a million protect/explosion combos which will completely overcentralise the tourney. The ban list is idiotic, denying pokes as low a tier as BL and inviting ubers to play. I cant even be bothered to cover the rest.

So yeah, this is really gonna attract the best battlers out there [/sarcasm].

Did anyone accually sign up and get picked to go?

Horyo June 17th, 2008 10:30 PM

I thought there was a thread.... http://www.pokecommunity.com/showthread.php?t=142042

But anyways, I GOT PICKED!!! I'm so excited, even if the rules are that tight, I'm willing to do it for the chance of getting a Wii or free stuff :D

richdevildog559 June 17th, 2008 10:45 PM

wow tuff restrictions...y cant they just keep it simple like they did for Journey Across America?

Atomic Sharks June 18th, 2008 7:40 AM

What ticks me off is this if we go under the pokemon center after adding the person you are battling you can choose 50 or 100 and they go to that lv then if we do it their we won't have to go to the tourny and with those restrictions if i joined i think it would be tuff but not impossible for me to find an ok team

mcrfreak June 18th, 2008 8:43 AM

This sounds interseasting...

Shem June 18th, 2008 5:52 PM

no innapropriate trainer or nicknames...they probably wouldn't like my shiny cahrizard with the OT "DILDO" lol

GeneralGuy June 18th, 2008 7:32 PM

No way in hell am I going to a tournament with such shitty rules and restrictions.
