Holy god jesus whaaaaaat

Logically, Metapod should have evolved into Venomoth. Caterpillars turn into moths, and Venonat has all the same features as Butterfree.

How did I go a decade without noticing this.

YuuNoKami Saka May 28th, 2008 7:03 PM

That's a good question. I never noticed that either. :(

airconditioning May 28th, 2008 7:29 PM

... Don't caterpillars evolve into butterflies? Either that, or all of kindergarten was a lie.

EDIT: God damn, there is a thread on /v/ right now about this.

YuuNoKami Saka May 28th, 2008 7:36 PM

Catepillars can become either a cocoon or pupal. Cocoon will bring out a moth and a pupal will bring out a Butterfly.

Ho ho! So you DO learn something new everyday.

This is peculiar. I mean, I would never have noticed myself.

ErickaVolt May 28th, 2008 7:47 PM

I noticed this since I finished Pokemon Red, Yellow and Blue. And yes, this is very mysterious. You should ask the Nintendo.

Crimson Arcanine May 28th, 2008 7:57 PM

An old mistake my guess since they brought out Wurmple, Silcoon ,Cascoon, Beautifly and Dustox in the 3rd generation and that fits that fact almost exactly.

Acrutheo May 28th, 2008 11:55 PM

I'm not sure how I went so long without noticing the immense similarities in design between Venonat and Butterfree. Possibly this was their original intention and they made a change to it later on?

SherlockHolmeboy May 29th, 2008 1:30 AM

That's a very good point! I never noticed that until now. :P

Mitchman May 29th, 2008 2:18 AM

Holy crud that is the biggest mistake nintendo ever made. Im going to the pokemon mailbox on the official site to tell them

Zet May 29th, 2008 3:43 AM

your theory is wrong, caterpillars turn into cocoons ¬_¬

Idiot! May 29th, 2008 6:50 AM

Caterpillars can either be chrysalis or cocoon. Or dead.

Chrysalis become butterflies, cocoons become moths. Dead caterpillars are food.

What makes me wonder is why Venonat has no pupa form.

I know this might not be the right time, airconditioning, but you're my favourite posted on this forum.

Oh, and Allstories, aren't we talking about a world of magical monsters where ten year olds are allowed to run around the regions on their own with no supervision? I'm sure Nintendo would be happy to make all logic in Pokemon flawed purposely in order to make a good game, but this evolution line must have been an error on their parts!

Mitchman May 29th, 2008 7:08 AM

Ιt was an error. I mean its ridicoulus enough that those are first gen pokemon but to be revealed after ten years is what bugs me. Imagine nintendo lookin at this and saying um all dear pokemon fans were sorry to say that after 10 years it seems 2 different pokemon were mixed up. Sorry for the inconvenience and we hope that in the 5th gen it clears up! Id be laughng in nintendos face if tat happens.

Sydian May 29th, 2008 7:14 AM

Ummm...catepillars turn into cocoons and then butterflies.

Gnats and moths are just annoying.

If you think this is crazy...

You tell me-- is this line weirder than catepillar->cocoon->butterfly?

See, it's normal compared to other things. Like Magikarp->Gyarados, Feebas->Milotic, etc.

Amp May 29th, 2008 7:23 AM

I noticed that Venonat looked WAY too much like Buterfree, but I never thought to cross Venomoth into the Metapod line... good thinking, there.

Allstories May 29th, 2008 7:32 AM

I'm pretty sure this is an error on Nintendo's part, similar to the way you get the MARSH badge from the psychic gym leader, and the SOUL badge from the poison gym leader.

Magikarp->Gyarados

I believe that's based off an old Japanese/ Chinese legend. From Bulbapedia:

Feebas->Milotic
While not based on any sort of legend, this evolution is pretty similar to Gyarados. Gyarados can be seen as extreme weakness turning into extreme strength, while Milotic can be seen as extreme ugliness turning into extreme beauty.

It's always the right time to point that out. ;)

Motsuko Live May 29th, 2008 12:15 PM

While we're on this topic, what exactly is Venonat supposed to be?

Anyway, good point. I doubt it's an error that nintendo made, but maybe they just didn't see the relation between Venonat and Butterfree.

Mitchman May 29th, 2008 12:17 PM

If my 5 year old cousin can see it how the bloody hell nintndo cant?

I know, eh! Like, wtf man. What a touchy subject. I think I'm going to go freak out over how nintendo couldn't see this, but my 5 year old cousin could. >.>

Dr.Ray Quaza May 29th, 2008 12:38 PM

omg caterpillars turn into moths!

kindergarden lied i am sad now :(

Azonic May 29th, 2008 12:47 PM

Very good observation there, Allstories. Venonat shares little relation to Venomoth regardless of the evolution chain. If Venonat evolves into Venomoth, it would lose its feet, unique red eyes, simplistic hands, and antennae. But if Venonat had evolved into Butterfree, it would keep its eyes, feet, simplistic hands, mouth, and antennae. However Venonat and Venomoth both share the same fangs, but not the same mouth. Besides the purple color, the fangs are the only similarity I can spot whereas Butterfree has many.

Terri May 29th, 2008 2:19 PM

thiis a very interesting point, good for noticing

AJ™ May 29th, 2008 2:30 PM

I love how half the people on this thread are like "WTF, CATERPILARZ CANT TURN IN 2 BUTTERFLIZE."

But i agree,
Venonant would've been a better choice for Butterpre-volution.
