This shouldn't be here - please go tell a mod [i'm to lazy ^_^]
anyway - however some moves are suitable for some pokemon ie adamant blaziken will not have flamethrower but overheat.................so this is too vague a title.................................
also do u mean direct damage dealing moves only or all moves??
if all moves then i'll say will-o-wisp is the best ghost move........

I'm taking it u mean only direct damage moves........
[i'm doing this not on power only but on overall use - pp + accuracy + turn time]

Grass- leaf blade [due to it being a only treeko family move u may want to say solarbeam]
Fire - flamethrower
Ice - ice beam
Water - surf [u could probably say hydro pump]
Electric - thunderbolt
Dragon - dragon claw
Normal - return/double edge
Dark - crunch
Psychic - psychic
Flying - aeroblast [to bad its for lugia and smergle only]
Rock - rock slide
Ground - earthquake
Fighting - brick break/skyuppercut
Poison - sludge bomb
Bug - megahorn
Ghost - shadow ball
Steel - meteor mash

i am not sure about some of these

Toothache August 5th, 2004 8:07 PM

Grass
Giga Drain at a push... although some of the indirect ones like Leech Seed are a lot better.

Fire
Flamethrower for me. Fire Blast is too inaccurate for my tastes, and you can't always rely on Blaze Kick's higher critical hit ratio.

Ice
Ice Beam. Same reasons as for Fire

Water
Surf. Again because of the accuracy (and it's use in 2 v 2)

Electric
Thunderbolt. Pretty standard. Thunderdance is too easy to spot and counter, and Thunder's accuracy is worse than Blizzard, Fire Blast and Hydro Pump without RD.

Dragon
Dragon Claw. Given there are so few Dragon attacks, the most powerful is probably the best to use.

Normal
Facade has become my new favourite, for it's surprise damage.

Dark
Bite for flinching, vs Crunch for damage... meh. Crunch then.

Psychic
Er... the name says it all

Flying
Drill Peck. Again cos of the accuracy issue

Rock
Rock Blast - the anti-Ninjask.

Ground
Earthquake - pretty standard.

Fighting
Brick Break. Gotta love anything that can take down barriers.

Poison
Toxic of course

Bug
Fury Cutter. It's a nice surprise when it builds up.

Ghost
Confuse Ray. Confusion is one of my fave indirect attacks.

Steel
Ew... I hate Steel moves. At least Meteor Mash has it's use...

Frostweaver August 5th, 2004 8:51 PM

What is the best move for:
(I'll list top 3, in no particular order)

This is an outrage (no puns plz)... NOBODY mentioned moves that don't do damage...

Grass
-spore: who thinks that 100% sleep sucks? if you do, try facing Breloom

-sleep powder: weaker version of the above, but 75% is still one of the most accurate sleep status move

-leech seed: everyone who can learn leech seed, has leech seed in battle

Fire
-will o wisp: 75% burn, and that means dividing your attack power by half along with indirect damage per turn

-overheat: 210 base power... so what if it lowers sp.att when you get killed in one shot by it?

-flamethrower: it's found on almost every team... one of the standard elemental beams

Ice
-haze: the move that every team lusts for... its effect is so great, that we even call other moves "pseudo-haze"

-ice beam: if you don't understand why this is here...

-sheer cold: best of all OHKO moves, and the only thing 'cuny has to defend itself

Water
-surf: it's standard

-hydro pump: try to get hit by it from an Omastar in the rain... now cry

-rain dance: a very deadly move that can dominate over your entire team if you have no way to block Rdance+hydro+STAB+x2+MWater together. Hey there is a reason why there are so many water absorbers compare to the other absorbs

Electric
-thunderwave: lack of appreciation for the best paralyze move in the world... you won't feel so cool after your speed got divided by 2.5

-thunderbolt: duh?

-Can we say that there is a lack of electric moves? I'll reserve this slot to add in more moves of another type!

Dragon
-Dragon dance: there is no contest... first to pull off that T-tar with 2 dragon dance wins

-dragon claw: well... not that I really like dragon claw as its elemental advantages are only so-so

-dragon breath: back in the days of GSC, it wasn't that bad...

Dark
-crunch: well... as if there are that many choices

-pursuit: underappreciated move... it's very useful if the right Pokemon is using it, such as Houndoom. I'll much rather use pursuit than crunch for houndoom anyday!

-<slot reserved for other type moves>

Psychic
-calm mind: excellent baton passing material, and it helps slow tanks to tank even better, along with improving their offensive power!

-light screen: unimaginable frustration should someone like Gardevoir use this after burning you with will o wisp

-reflect: well so much for having a metagross now... reflect and light screen just make your Pokemon so much more endurable that it's crazy.

Psychic isn't on this, and that is right... Psychic has some pretty poor elemental advantages... in comparison to ice beam and flamethrower, it has an unacceptably low PP yet it's 5 power weaker, with a side effect that's a lot worse than burnt or freeze... if you think about it that way, it's not that impressive.

Flying
-drill peck: what else?

-aerial ace: finally a SPAMable flying move which everyone can learn and abuse with

-I'll reserve this slot for another move

Rock
-rock slide: there is no contest...

-ancientpower: well higher accuracy at the sacrifice of no flinch, 10 PP lower and weaker power... if you are lucky, you do get one of the best side effect possible

-rock blast: a limited move that's used only by Armaldo pretty much, but with a swords dance to boost, this move can easily knock down a lot of Pokemon

Ground
-earthquake: duh? 100 power and like 1/2 of 386 can learn it or something?

-spike: the sole reason why teams include rapid spin... 25% down before you even battle... how can this be left out of "best move?"

-bonemerang: sub breaker along with a power that totals 100! Well afterall it is a signature move...

Fighting
-seismic toss: refer to Blissey for what's so terrifying about 100 dmg

-focus punch: a highly strategical move with a nice 150 power attack as a reward... certainly very deadly.

-brick break: it's your standard fighting move with one of the best side effect ever!

-mach punch: quick attack fighting version!

Poison
-toxic: steady poison damage that speeds up your death

-sludge bomb: 100 power... pretty nice eh?

-err... I'll reserve this too

Bug
-silver wind: as if there is another bug move...

-tail glow: one of the best move in the world handicapped by its owner

-megahorn: an excellent move hogged by only a selected couple

Ghost
-confuse ray: I think we know why...

-shadow ball: one of the best physical move out there...

-save slot once again

Steel
-meteor mash: what else?

-save 2 more slots please!

Normal
-hidden power: as if there are teams out there that do not use HP. Having HP is like having 14 moves at your disposal.

-swords dance: double your attack power! who doesn't like that?

-return/frustration: 102 attack power with STAB = insanity

-heal bell: more reason to loathe that egg

-wish: the only way to heal a teammate besides leech seed

-extremespeed: face a drumed up Linoone and you'll understand. Quick attack is also the same thing, just a lot weaker but everyone learns it.

-substitute: the move that we all hate and love at the same time! Gotta hate it when the Ninjask is using it, and gotta love it when your Sceptile is using it!

-roar/whirlwind: it's one of those must haves on anyteam

Now, I can definetly see why you are the moderator of this section of the forum. Your knowlege is unsurpassable.

Toothache August 5th, 2004 11:23 PM

I can't believe you forgot Megahorn for the Bug moves. It's part of what makes Heracross so great :-) And Rock Blast is the ultimate anti-Ninjask, takes down Sub and picks on his 4 x weakness to Rock.

Frostweaver August 5th, 2004 11:40 PM

blah... right Megahorn and rock blast... I forgot about them completely >>; *edits*

Toothache August 6th, 2004 2:31 AM

Erm, Overheat is 150 base power (225 with STAB). Although agreed, it is nice to use, especially combined with White Herb

Mana Lugia August 6th, 2004 4:58 AM

Overheat is 140 base power. STAB is +70, thus 210.

Ice demon August 6th, 2004 9:19 AM

Hello frostweaver?????????????
i clearly stated i was dealing with only direct damage dealing moves
if i wasn't then spore, will-o-wisp, thunder wave and toxic would be on top of my list ^_^
i love those..................go guys!!!!!!!!!!
well...........i'm not a fan of reflect and light screen but i agree ice beam and flamethrower rules - alot

lol 210
nice

so hope we helped ^_^

Frostweaver August 6th, 2004 10:35 AM

It's almost close to no Pokemon who can learn overheat without being a fire type (and those Pokemon usually have better stuff to learn than overheat by then)... it's safe to add in the STAB calculation right now.

Some Pokemon like Moltres lives on Overheat because it really has no other move but overheat... =/

Ice demon August 6th, 2004 6:39 PM

lol mif only he had more moves

ahhhhhhhh moltres doing overheat ^_^
what about sunny day + fire blast??
but i guess Tyranitar would mess that up to no extent ^_^

*moltres used sunny day*
*go tyranitar!!*
*sandstorm ineffect*
*moltres used fire blast
*not effective*
*tyranitar used rock slide*

BYE BYE BIRDY ^_^

Xilion_Sword90 August 7th, 2004 4:39 AM

Dark:
- Taunt: You cant be hazed or Peudo-Hazed. Works well on Dragon Dancing Gyarados.

Fire:
Sunny Day: Maybe Sunny Day would be good too. Chlorophyll isnt that commun, but it's still deadly

Psychic:
- Agility: It's worth mentioning it. SpeedX1.5...
- Amnesia: It's also worth mentioning...

Fighting:
- Bulk Up: How can you people mention Calm Ming without Bulk Up...

Poison:
- Acid Armor: Only on Muk, Smeargle and Magcargo (I think). Greatly increases Defense.

Steel:
- Iron Defense: Acid Armor Steel version.

Ghost:
- Destiny Bond: Always handy...
- Nightmare: Death to all those who use Rest...

Grass:
- Aromatherapy: If you people mention Heal Bell, then mention Aromatherapy SVP.
- Growth: Not often used, but still a good Stat-Boosting move.

Ice demon August 8th, 2004 2:24 PM

lol Vaporeon can learn acid armour too ^_^

Frostweaver August 8th, 2004 2:50 PM

Bulk up: problem with that is whoever can learn bulk up has a very high chance of learning swords dance, so why not take swords dance? If Alakazam and Gardevoir and friends can learn tail glow, I'll ditch calm mind for tail glow too.

Sunny day: however, there aren't any STAB attacks + weather + bonus speed abuse for sunny day, unlike rain dance. It's a lot weaker, though it's still deadly. Plus Sunny day is more like a grass attack as it's stuck on grass types 95% of the time. *coughEggycough*

Agility: hardly anyone uses this move... baton pass rarely passes agility now, when there's NInjask with free speed

Dark Gogeta August 8th, 2004 7:53 PM

What about Blizzard? I thought that was the best Ice move...I always put it on my blastoise when I play blue or fire red.

Frostweaver August 8th, 2004 8:00 PM

blizzard has a much lower accuracy along with a terrible PP total. Ice beam is much preferred. It works the same way as flamethrower and fire blast, how flamethrower is generally preferred. You only use Fire Blast really if you're trying to score OHKOs, or you're using it only as a mean to destroy certain Pokemon.

(these stuff should be in the advanced trainer's guide already)

Ice demon August 8th, 2004 8:20 PM

sadly Mr weaver most ppl don't read ur trainer guide
and that is the main cause of such questions..........................they just don't know ^_^

If only they would make a 100% acc move that freezes an opponent [like spore]- but they never will................and that may be for the best ^_^

Frostweaver August 8th, 2004 8:23 PM

not to mention then flamewheel will be stuck anything that can learn it by then >>; Freeze is by far the worst status possible. Though you can get defrosted as soon as one turn, it's really worst than sleep... your chances of defrosting so quickly is so thin.

Well it is in a way confusing about high accuracy vs high power moves. There are times where we just like to stick fire blast or hydro pump on Salamence, instead of flamethrower. But things like that just have to come from experience then...

Ice demon August 8th, 2004 8:36 PM

For some reason the ability to distinguish the best place to use a move just comes over time
a year ago fire blast was something i never used but now i realize that it is useful for some pokemon/movesets............

Abskull August 12th, 2004 3:22 PM

Grass- Solor Beam! So it takes one turn, I don't care! When iy hits, it's amazingly strong!
Fire- Sacred Fire or Flamethrower! Both are just really strong.
Ice- Ice Beam! Woohoo! It can freeze!
Water- Waterfall, Surf, Dive! They're all powerful and useful
Electric- Shock Wave! It never misses, and it's strong!
Dragon- Dragon Claw! There's not much to choose from.0_o;
Normal- Tri Attack or Hyper Beam! Tri Attack can paralize, burn, or freeze, I like it when other Pokemon are at a disadvantage. And Hyper Beam is just so strong.
Dark- Crunch! CHOMP!
Psychic- Psychic of course! It's powerful it can lower sp. defense what's not to like about it?
Flying- Fly duh! It rocks because you can get out of the way for an attack!
Rock- Errr... Rock Throw? I don't really know.
Ground- EARTHQUAKE!!! It's soooooo powerful!
Fighting- Seismic Toss! Hey, why don't I just throw you up in the air!
Poison- Poison Tail! Again, not much to choose from.
Bug- I don't really know, I guess Silver Wind is a pretty viscous attack.
Ghost- SHADOW PUNCH AND SHADOW BALL!!! Rock on shadow!
Steel- Uhhhh... iron tail?

Ice demon August 12th, 2004 7:52 PM

ummmmmmm
for steel
meteor mass > iron tale
same damage more accurate

for flying
Drill peck > fly
need i explain??

For ghost
Will-o-wisp/confuse ray> shadow punch
i mean lower attack + sap hp or make an opponent hit itself ^_^

Thomas August 14th, 2004 9:31 PM

Ice Demon, I agree with you on drill peck. I wish the had it on all the flying birds. But isnt Will-o-wisp a fire move? Just checking cause I thought it was.

Frostweaver August 14th, 2004 9:35 PM

will o wisp is a fire move, despite of the literal meaning of the attack alluding it as a ghost attack.
