I was never homeschooled, but a close friend of mine was. She stopped going to public school right before her middleschool years I think.

Hah, she always used to mention how I go to public school and how she's homeschooled every time I screw up or make a dumb mistake or mention something dumb happening in school. The latter part didn't bother me as much, but the first two got on my nerves real quickly. << But hey, I always try to look up now. At least with school I have made lots of friends. She has a few friends online, but not a lot in real life. At least before this year started she didn't. I kinda felt bad before though, you know? <:|

I have a bunch of friends who are homeschooled [somehow >>;] There is this whole family of boys who are homeschooled until they start their freshman year, then they go to public school. I think most of them are in the public school now. Another is from another homeschooled family, but he gets to choose the classes he wants to take in public school, he doesn't have to be there full time! I'm so jealous. It's like the best of both worlds, you know? But anyway, he's really smart. But for some reason not very good at writing. He can't spell and his handwriting sucks. With all the Shakespeare he knows, I would have thought he'd be better at it. ^^;

I'm not homeschooled, and I don't want to diss anyone who is, but I think that those who are homeschooled are essentially missing out on learning a major part of life, and that is social interaction.

Sure when you're home you socialize with your parents or friends on the street, but you hardly get to understand what durastic personalities are like or just overall different experiences with relationships (no I'm not talking about boyfriends and girlfriends) with other people. It is essential to learn these skills for the work world, where, not always, everyone will be your best friend.

Being homeschooled, I would think, would most likely make you more prone to seclusion.

That's why my friend goes to high school part-time. To get that social interaction.
It can be done! ;]

Yeah I think that is going on with my friend Kait, though she is in college now, and plus I think for homeschooled kids where I live there is this "group" for homeschooled kids and she was in that for a little while..

In the UK a 'public school' is pretty much the opposite of a public school in the US.

In the UK a 'public school' is a privately owned school, which is open to the fee paying public. I guess you would call this a private school?

What you call 'public school' in the US, we call a 'state school' because it is run by the state, and free to attend.

Tangerine Fox August 15th, 2008 4:32 PM

I've proudly been homeschooled for 12 years now.

And if there is one thing I've tired of, it's the misconception that homeschooling means you're missing out on social interaction.

Quite the contrary, thanks to the scheduling freedom homeschooling has given me, I have friends and acquaintances aged four to eighty, from almost every walk of life. I've been a girl scout, reached my first degree black belt in Tae Kwon Do and a recommend black belt in a branch style, worked on 16 (soon to be 17) live theatrical productions, taken and taught classes at said theatre, visited museums and exhibits to see things without the after-school crowds, published multiple articles through a local paper, and a whole lot more. I have no lack of social interaction, nor do either of my homeschooled sisters.

Is homeschooling right for everyone? No. But it isn't as weird or difficult as people seem to think. I did make it to kindergarten, but people constantly would send their sick children in, causing me to miss half the school year because my immune system couldn't handle it. My health's gotten better, but the schools got worse, so I'll gladly finish my high school education without the hassle of a brick-and-mortar school.

Many people choose to resume some form of regular school come time for high school, but I instead starting taking my core courses via an online program. It's a great set up. I'm still a homeschooled student, however. It isn't as tricky as one might think. More and more schools are learning how to handle homeschooled students, and provided you can pass the specific tests required and requested by your state or school you wish to attend, you can continue onto higher education just like anyone else.

While I obviously can't speak for everyone, I would hate to have gone to a regular school, and I'd be happy to tell people a bit more about my own experiences with homeschooling if they're curious. :3

I go to a public school. I wish I was homeschooled now, because I got the grades and social interaction that I need to keep me ready for homeschooling.

Huh. That's really weird. o__O But strangely enough it makes sense...*dies*

Yeah, we would call the school you had to pay extra for private school, and the free er..."state owned" ones are public schools. xD; I go to a "state owned school" *death*

I was for grades 5 to 8, and then I went into public school again to finish.

Nuu, homeschooling is not for me~
I like to have lots of people to socialise myself with =3

I'm homeschooled, I just did recently. 3 hours a day, not bad I guess. Why are you guys homeschooled anyway?

Originally for my health, later on because the schools in my area became increasingly ridiculous. (Poor teaching, tons of sexual escapades, disrespect for both teachers and students, etc.) As a kid, I just couldn't handle all the sick kids being sent in. If I had stayed in a regular school, I'd probably have been held back a grade just to play catch up to all I missed when I was younger.

Why did you decide to start homeschooling? :3

Nick August 17th, 2008 6:56 AM

I wouldn't consider myself to have ever been the 'traditional' homeschooled teenager, although for a majority of the time I was under home instruction I kept trying to get my parents to get me a homeschool teacher who'd come to our house during the day and teach me my lessons since both of my parents were rather uneligible to do it.

Home instruction is rather different than being homeschooled because home instruction is when you are still enrolled in your district's school system and teachers from the town are coming to you and providing you the education needed.

This didn't last for long because I've only had three lessons total which is deeply upsetting because they were supposed to come one day, and just.. stopped. So, my parents met up with my guidence counsiler and scheduled me to take online courses at various schools.

But during that six-seven month period, I consider it homeschooling to a certain degree. After all, I had a one-on-one learning experience the whole time.

You make it sound as though people who are homeschooled only have interaction with parents and friends. Hardly. Most homeschoolers, as Tangerine Fox has clearly pointed out, due to such time on their hands they have time to have interaction that even the kids who don't have homeschooling can't have. Their schedule revolves around them and those who teach them. And I'm sure that whomever is teaching them would want them to have some socialization with kids their age.

Also, most towns offer a meeting place that allows homeschooled children and teens to meet up and chit-chat amoungst themselves.

Where are you getting this "everyone will be your best friend"? I'm awefully confused because that's hardly the case. Being homeschooled doesn't give someone the thought that everyone is their best friend. You make it sound, as said, that the homeschooled child is iscolated. If that was even the case, you'd think that the child or teen would already have that figured out that not everyone in life will be your best friend?

On that note, children and teens who are homeschooled know the importance of individualism and know how to define themself as a person at an early age because they do not have to worry about if their clothes match, if what they are wearing isn't a style that was dead years ago, etc. That's probably one of the biggest learning experience and lesson that people, especially teenagers want to find out. Most people I know from my high school look at themselves and the ones around them and they're all the same. It's pathetic, really.

kissing. raindrops August 21st, 2008 9:50 PM

I've never really thought about the whole topic of 'homeschooled'. I'm not that good at making new friends, I'm always quiet and usually say nothing, but when I'm around people I know, I'm so outgoing and loud. But still, I would die staying home EVERY day. I couldn't do that, so no.

I go to, what North American's call, a public school. Lol, schooling is so different in the UK than it is in America XD.

I'll soon be in Year 9 after the hols (not sure if this is correct, but I think Year 9 is the same as 8th grade? Correct me if I'm wrong, this is the year I turn 14).

i just go to an international school(one of the best schools in the world!)

SIN1488 August 21st, 2008 11:02 PM

I used to do homeschooling, but now i'm on contract learning which is basically the same thing but not at an official school.

I like it, it's easier than regular school, and I still have lots of friends.
