teababe27 January 16th, 2009 3:05 PM

Lately, I have been naming my Pokemon after musicians, depending on what is appropriate or what I am listening to at the time.

For example:
Scyther - Slash
Roserade - Axl R.
Blissey - Courtney L.
Tyranitar - Steve H.
Abomasnow - Lemmy K.

I went with a 90s rock/grunge theme for my Eevee evolutions:
Eevee - Andy W.
Vaporeon - Eddie V.
Jolteon - Kurt C.
Flareon - Scott W.
Espeon - Chris C.
Umbreon - Layne S.
Glaceon - Billy C.
Leafeon - Perry F.

I also went with a Metallica theme for my fossils:
Bastiodon - James H.
Cradily - Kirk H.
Aerodactyl - Cliff B.
Armaldo - Lars U.
Kabutops - Rob T.
Omanyte - Jason N.

Amaruuk January 16th, 2009 5:45 PM

I'll name them either if I plan to use them in some way (battling, catching, egg-hatching), or if I happen to have a good name on the spot when I catch them. Names can be anything from cool to serious to downright silly.

Some names from games I'm playing:

Diamond
Pickles / Torterra
Rei / Luxray
Blam-Blaze / Charizard
Roy / Gyarados
Lira / Mew
Egg-Warmer / Magcargo
Slasher / Mawile

Emerald
Diggs / Sceptile

Kite Katsumi January 17th, 2009 8:55 PM

On Diamond with my "serious" party, I don't give them nicknames. On Pearl, I nickname them. The only 3 that I really care about on Pearl are Fireworks (Quilava), Tsunami (Floatzel), and Treestar (Leafeon). :3

Andorale January 17th, 2009 9:01 PM

Mine have unique names.

Milotic = Desphae
Rayquaza = Veluedia

RandomBlues January 17th, 2009 9:07 PM

I'd collect the Pokemon trio that I use in my drawings as characters and nickname them this way:
Raichu-Raichu = Rai
Roserade-Rozureido = Rozu/Roze
Floatzel- Floatsel = Flow
Oh, I usually changed the Pokemon's name to Capital then small letters. BUIZEL = Buizel

Aokiji January 18th, 2009 11:51 AM

My Scyther's called Santoryu.
Noctowl's called Notch.

Mystery Soul January 18th, 2009 12:08 PM

I nickname all of my Pokemon. Based on type, or animal that they reflect:

Diamond:
Infernape-Inferno
Luxray-Lightning
Leafeon-Leaf
Milotic-Aphrodite
Espeon-Kitten
Umbreon-Twilight

Haza January 18th, 2009 12:09 PM

My brothe named the Starmie I gave him Shiruken or Shuriken which is really creative.

BlazingLink January 18th, 2009 6:33 PM

I usually don't give my Pokemon nicknames.

But, I nicknamed my Chimchar, Blazer.

Lol

And my Dialga was nicknamed Time, and Palkia, Space.

XD

Zelda January 19th, 2009 1:09 PM

Sometimes I do...it depends on what I would name it...it would have to suit the pokemon! ':D

salmence33 January 20th, 2009 4:20 PM

Puffy and bubbles

I have about 25 eevees named puffy.

jigglyppuff8 January 20th, 2009 4:30 PM

Before, I used to name all my Pokemon corruptions of their regular names.
Pikachu-Peekachew
Jigglypuff-Jigliepuph
Xatu-Zatoo
You get the idea.
Lately though, I'm trying to name Pokemon based on their mannerisms and have them based on other video games I've played. The only ones I have so far is a Sassy Pelliper nicknamed Phyllis (Animal Crossing reference) and the pokemon cast of Super Smash Brothers Brawl all named after their Japanese names (because we heard a lot of those brawl's english release).

Ice_Emperor January 20th, 2009 4:43 PM

I don't name my Legendaries.
But for my nons I've used two types of naming.
Part of their names such as Pika. Sometimes giving them japanese honorifics(On my Gen III games) such as Pika-kun.
Or character traits such as my Staraptor; Shiner. Stars do what? Shine, thus Shiner.
I used to do jap names like my old Pikachu; Rai. (I have a lot of Pikachus)

Haza January 20th, 2009 4:48 PM

Mew - Birth
Mew - Baby

I am choosing between the two

moments. January 20th, 2009 4:54 PM

Haza call it 'Birth', that is such a nice name for a Mew considering the amount of time it took to establish what Mew is.

Haza January 20th, 2009 4:56 PM

Yeah you are right but its just not a nice sounding word which is why I was considering Baby.

moments. January 20th, 2009 5:01 PM

Hm Baby is good but very cutesy so if you are into that style go for it!

Haza January 20th, 2009 5:03 PM

Well it is a Cute Contest pokemon so I thought it fit and you obviously do too.

moments. January 20th, 2009 5:05 PM

Well there you go! Problem solved.

I am doing the monotype challenge and am considering naming my Pokemon after mythology like Poseidon, Behemoth etc.

Haza January 20th, 2009 5:07 PM

Well the trend seems to be that everyone is name their Empoleon Poseidon these days. Tangrowth makes a good Madusa.

蜃気楼 January 20th, 2009 5:08 PM

I named them with Mega Man and Naruto characters names such as Falzar, SpoutMan, HeatMan, Sarutobi, Naruto
I named my Piplup SpoutMan and after it evolved into Empoleon, I renamed it to SpoutManEX

Zebra Thunderhead January 20th, 2009 5:09 PM

I used to nickname my Pokemon after weird nicknames I had for my online friends/Inuyasha character names. ]: I've since ditched the nicknaming process.

moments. January 20th, 2009 5:09 PM

Oooh Tangela and Medusa sounds awesome!
Behemoth is good on Gyarados.

The Ebon Blade January 20th, 2009 5:12 PM

I always thought that nicknaming pokemon was kind of a waste of time. Unless you can come up with some really clever and not annoyingly cliched names.

Haza January 20th, 2009 5:13 PM

Genie is good for a female Shiny Dusknoir. When I get one thats what I am naming her(so dont take my idea).

OokamiShipper January 22nd, 2009 7:28 PM

I only nickname sometimes, and mine's are classics and they (usually) revolve around nature. Like...
Charizard - Female, Flare
Charizard - Male, Flame
Sceptile - Male, Blade
Arcanine - Female, Infernia (OMG, lame, I know)
Though I do name some of my pokemon after my fave characters or their pokemon.
Beautifly - Female, Haruka
Venusaur - Male, Saur
Espeon - Male, Vui
Pikachu - Male, Satoshi
Jolteon - Male, Volkner
And some are random...
Vaporeon - Male, Farai

Dominus Temporis January 22nd, 2009 7:33 PM

I did have nicknames for my Crystal team for a while. I forget what I called my Typhlosion, but I had a Feraligatr called Gatorade, an Espeon called Neo, a Lugia called Legend, a Tyranitar called Tyrostorm, and a Raichu called Henry.

Yes, Henry. This is part of the reason I changed them back...

I also thought of naming all my Diamond team for characters from the Discworld book series. It would've been:

Torterra: A'Tuin
Staraptor: Vimes
Luxray: Havelock
Gastrodon: Rincewind
Rapidash: Binky
Lucario: either Lobsang or Lu Tze

Xebelleon January 22nd, 2009 7:52 PM

I sometimes nickname.

Like the Unown I caught and stuffed into MPR got their respective letter of the alphabet placed in between parentheses.

- Unown (X)

I favor TURTWIG for the Sinnoh starter.

Tortrunk, the TORTERRA

Other:

:P ikachu, the PIKACHU (yes, it has a space)
W-----D 40, the WAILORD (refers to WD-40)
Gaydar-OS, the GYARADOS (OS = Operating System; as 'nasty' as my nicknames get)

*Smeargle I use for breeding get named based on what their pair, and moveset, is.
~eg. Snub-HB, the SMEARGLE pairs with Snubbull. HB is for Heal Bell, though Close Combat is on it as well.

**My 'Smeargle Monks' get named, in part, on their alignment
~eg. Gravehound, the SMEARGLE is 'Ghost-type' aligned
~~Conversion, Curse, Recover, Shadow Force

Neety January 23rd, 2009 5:10 PM

I decided that with Diamond I was going to nickname all the Pokes I caught...bad idea when you're stuck for words at the naming screen, sitting there going "Um...eeergh...aaagh..." Also I don't get why but I hate how the game automatically CAPITALS all the names; I kept the legendaries names the same, but de-capitalised them (So MESPRIT is now Mesprit).

Most of my Pokes were named after real-life pets, eg:

Turtwig = Soupy (my pet turtle)
Shinx = Bourneville (boyfriend's cat)
Lucario = Blaze (boyfriend's dog)
Buneary = Misty (my old pet rabbit)

I also named a Bibarel "Ugh" owing to my unexplainable hatred of that specific Pokemon.

Hadim Sinan Pasha January 23rd, 2009 6:10 PM

NO. I don't give neicknames to pokemon because, well, I'm not good at naming Pokemon. If I was better than I might do it but no, I'm just not original with names. It's always stuff like:
Ugly, Teeny, Whiney, Sissy. Nothing uber awesome.

deliriouspurple January 23rd, 2009 6:21 PM

I sometimes nickname them:
leafeon=Issa
Charizard=Jerz
Empoleon=Hared
Houndoom=Kshadow

*~Frost Umbreon~* January 23rd, 2009 7:19 PM

I just name my Pokemon cute names. =3

Typhlosion - Flame

Ursaring - Rini

Crobat - Flappy

Umbreon - Darky

Raichu - Sparky

Raikou - Bolt

Entei - Volcano

Suicune - Ocean

Igglybuff - Iggly

Lapras - Larry

Vileplume - Bloom

I'll add more. :O

machomuu January 23rd, 2009 10:20 PM

I give my pokemon general nemes, names that wouldn't help someone immediately identify a species of a pokemon...most of the time.
Pikachu- Pikaru(Girl) Tory(Boy)
Piplup- Pipford
Catrpie- Hikari
Charizard- Gale
Pidgey- Hikaru
...Well I guess it's sort of a split

Giratina ♀ January 24th, 2009 1:32 PM

Murkrow: Nightwitch (bad name, great Pokemon!)
Typhlosion: Typhon (Greek Mythology, yay.)
Raichu: Dengeki ('electric shock', I believe.)
Honchkrow: Nights End (I tend to use the prefixes Night-, Dark-, or Crow- for my Murkrows, so I decided to do something different for this guy.)
Umbreon: High Moon (descended from 'High Noon', a company that makes... something. IDK.)
Mesprit: Vindict (a fanfic thing.)
Magneton: Helio (xD another fanfic thing...)
Giratina: Cyrus (Need I any explanation? xD)

I lost my copy of Pearl, so I can't remember many.

Heiheipig January 24th, 2009 1:56 PM

I used to, until my friend and I started trading (and GTS) most people don't like pokemon with nicknames (my friend names EVERY pokemon of his Magikarp).

Neety January 24th, 2009 2:45 PM

Yeah, I guess traders aren't fans of names because you can get stuck with a name you don't like. I didn't actually think of that!

@Ginga: I love the idea of a Chrizard called Steve.

ArcanineOod February 13th, 2009 5:14 PM

I usually don't give them nicknames, but when I first played Pokemon Colusseum, I named them all food products! (Years ago, ok?)
I had a Ferret called Apple Pie or something stupid like that! XD

A couple of nicknames I would give:
Pikachu - GG
Buizel - Smuiz

Other than that, I keep the original name, apart from the time when I first got Ruby or Sapphire and named my Torchic 'Charmy' ^_^
xX

HoneyBubbles February 13th, 2009 5:34 PM

I nickname almost all of my pokemon.
Just to name a few..
Blastoise - Godfather (I had just watched part of the movie)
Leafeon - Leaf (Oh, shut up.)
Jigglypuff - La Rock (I don't even know where this came from. It sounds kind of cool. :U )
Ferrow - Nino
Altaria - Rhythm
Blissey - HelloNurse (I love the animaniacs~ xD )
Espeon - Eru
Spheal - Mocoa

The Hero Without a Name February 13th, 2009 6:03 PM

Espeon Master February 14th, 2009 8:11 PM

Raichu: Sparkle(F) Dazzle(M)
Blastoise: King
Rapidash: Jazz

as you can see i get pretty specific on some pokemon...........

Artyte February 15th, 2009 12:30 AM

Nicknaming is not my type, but if i were to do so, I would do it on the team that I want to use. For instance, my Skarmory was call S.Jet meaning steel jet. I have gotten some nicknaming influences from pokemon special, namely Wallace's way of nicknaming his pokemon, for instance when wallace calls his Luvdisc Elizabeth, I call my Blaziken John.

Ashbox February 15th, 2009 10:14 AM

nicknaming gives your pokemon personality......... even if there not your good pokemon.....

Chives Yo February 16th, 2009 11:33 AM

I usually don't nickname Pokémon only because I'm too lazy to, although I do think its nice. If I do name them, I usually go with a theme, like I once went through Leaf Green giving my Pokémon names that end in "yin."

Venusaur - Leayin (Lee-yin)
Raichu - Raiyin (Rye-in)
Vaporeon - Veeyin (vee-yin)
Ninetales - Fieyin (Fye-in)
Pidgeot - Faeyin (Fay-in)
Alakazam - Psyin (Sye-in)

Eucliffe February 16th, 2009 11:40 AM

Hmm...

My Pearl Team:

Infernape: Bane (Female, by the way)
Luxray: Sinbad (the name I give ALL Male Luxrays)
Palkia: Hydra (yes, In put legendaries on my team >.>)
Gastrodon (West): Mei (the name I give all female Shellos/Gastrodon West)
Mismagius: Fia (Female)

... I haven't played Pearl in a while, so I forgot the rest XD Same with Diamond, but my Platinum team:

Torterra: Leaf (since I can only give each Pokemon five English letters in their nicknames, Leaf is female)
Luxray: Star (because she's female, and even if she were male, it would be impossible to name her Sinbad unless I used hiragana or katakana)
Crobat: Toxin (Female)
Milotic: Saria (Female; name came from OoT, the best LoZ game ever)
Lopunny: Lina (Name came from the same game as Fia)
Espeon: Ruby (Named after my all-time fave PokeSpecial character; though my Espeon is female like the rest of my team)

But I love nicknaming Pokemon <3

Haza February 16th, 2009 12:22 PM

Im looking for a shiny Ursaring so I can name her MoneyHoney! Green like money and eats honey, get it?

burgiju February 17th, 2009 6:39 PM

i dnt really feel like giving nicknames to pokemon

Mezase Master February 17th, 2009 6:42 PM

I did for just about all of them on Diamond. Before that, I did for a few files, but after trying so hard sometimes with Diamond I vowed to never do it again.

When Gold and Silver came out, I called my Marill "Pikablu" just because I liked that name better.

The Jewel of Life February 28th, 2009 11:14 AM

Currently on my Monotype Challenge (Pokémon Blue) i'm giving my team Electric-based nicknames:
http://i40.*.com/121esnp.jpg Raichu -> Sergio
http://i40.*.com/121esnp.jpg Electrode -> Joules
http://i40.*.com/121esnp.jpg Jolteon -> Sparky

I also have a Bellsprout called 'Cut'. No prizes for anyone that manages to guess why he's called that.

Ninetales1 March 25th, 2009 3:58 PM

And now, here is a complete list of all my Pokemon's nicknames from Emerald and Diamond! With explanations for some!
(Pokemon with red species names are female; blue ones are male; green ones are genderless.)
Note: You can find a lot of the following especially:
-Harry Potter characters (their nicknames have an asterisk next to them, in case you're confused)
-People's names which sound like a characteristic of the Pokemon (their explanations have asterisks at the end)
-Pokemon trainers (I think you'll be able to identify these, as each is named after someone who has that Pokemon)
Note: My Pokemon who have lousy in-game-trade names or are unnamed as a result of trades/events are not included. That would be an Alakazam (Kazza), Chatot (Charap), Darkrai, Deoxys, Manaphy, Snorlax, Infernape, Empoleon, Bastiodon, and Purugly.

Raichu: Raiha
Raichu: Lt. Surge
Clefable: Cupid

Tentacruel: Neptune
Rapidash: Cinderella (emphasis on the "cinder"*)

Quagsire: Marsha (Quagsire lives in a marsh*)
Wobbuffet: Retalia
Girafarig: Giuffrida (Sounds like giraffe*)
Girafarig: Primrose
Steelix: Platinum
Heracross: Tsunoko (making a Japanese girl's name out of the word "tsuno"--horn)

Sneasel: Fred* (Yes, I also have one named George!)
Corsola: Kaminda (In a language I sort of created, it means "pink")
Octillery: Octavian (I know it's ridiculous for an octopus to rule Rome, but at least the "Oct" makes sense!*)
Mantine: Katie (Sort of looks like "kite"*)
Skarmory: Knightwing
Donphan: Fanta (Not to be confused with the soda. Ellie is too cliche anyway.)
Blissey: Florentine (Also an egg dish)

Mightyena: Artemis
Linoone: Hufflepuff*
Beautifly: May
Beautifly: Shumi (Anagram of "mushi", Japanese for bug)

Dustox: Pesto (Because a moth is a pest! Oh! Sauce? 0_e)
Lombre: Lolita (Spanish name that looks like "Lotad"*)
Nuzleaf: Pinocchio
Swellow: Robin (Seems to resemble a robin, doesn't she...?*)
Pelipper: Phyllis (A pelican from Animal Crossing)
Gardevoir: Sigmund (As in Freud, but the last name sounds too weird to put in a nickname)
Masquerain: Drew
Breloom: Portabella (because Portobello sounds too masculine)
Ninjask: Arya (the elf from Eragon--don't ask why I named a Ninjask after an elf...)
Shedinja: Fiari (In a language I sort of created, it means "ephemeral" or "not quite there")
Exploud: Muffliato* (actually a spell that prevents you from hearing something)
Hariyama: Luchadora (Spanish for wrestler)
Delcatty: Tom-Tom
Sableye: Gollum (shiny-object-lover from Lord of the Rings)
Lairon: Haganiwa (from the Japanese "hagani"--steel and "iwa"--rock)

Plusle: Rachel (named after my stepniece, who is a cheerleader)
Minun: Cheerum
Volbeat: Hikaru (similar to hikari, which means "light"*)
Illumise: Starlet
Roselia: Rosemary (I know that's a spice, not a flower, but girls are made of spice... right?)

Wailmer: Moby Dick
Camerupt: Magmus (Just sounded more, erm, sophisticated... than "Magma")

Whiscash: Quaker (Not to be confused with the religion or the oats!)
Crawdaunt: Langosta (Spanish for lobster)
Claydol: Clayton
Anorith: Sebastian (The lobster or whatever from Little Mermaid)
Milotic: Venus [i](Also makes sense because of the famous statue Venus de Milo...tic)
Castform: Weatherman
Kecleon: Nymphadora*
Banette: Severus*
Dusclops: Samara (the girl from The Ring)
Tropius: Fern
Chimecho: Tinkerbell
Chimecho: Belle
Absol: Sirius* (It can also be noted that the Egyptians used to see the star Sirius as a warning that the Nile will flood)
Glalie: Yukiko (in Japanese it literally means "snow child"*)
Sealeo: Saki (a famous sea lion who appeared on television)
Luvdisc: Roxie (because of a character in the musical "Chicago" named Roxie Hart)
Torterra: Pangaia (A dub name I came up with for this Pokemon, from the continent of Pangaea and the goddess Gaia)
Staraptor: Silverling (A dub name I came up with for Staravia, short for "silver starling")
Bibarel: Beatrice (sounds similar to beaver)
Kricketune: Katydid
Luxray: Godric*
Roserade: William (because his nature says "strong willed"*)
Rampardos: Yoshi
Wormadam-Grass: Mistletoe (Burmy's appearance reminded me of mistletoe)
Wormadam-Ground: Cleopatra
Wormadam-Steel: Jasmine (Jasmine doesn't have a Wormadam, but she likes Steel Pokemon nevertheless...)
Mothim: Thatcher (Has nothing to do with Margaret Thatcher. The name just sounds cool, and includes "hatch", which is sort of what Burmy does when it evolves.)
Vespiquen: Elizabeth (Okay, but I feel justified in naming a Pokemon after an English queen for some reason.)
Pachirisu: Chip (I do have another named Dale!)
Floatzel: Ginny*
Cherrim: Shigatsu (Japanese for April, when cherry blossoms bloom)
Gastrodon: Slughorn* (Like Prongs, it makes more literal sense, as Gastrodon is a slug and appears to have horns)
Ambipom: Nimble
Drifblim: Inflotion (A dub name I came up with for this Pokemon, putting "float" inside "inflation")
Lopunny: Peter (after Peter Rabbit)
Mismagius: Maleficent
Honchkrow: Raven
Skuntank: Nox* (Yeah, I know it's a spell--one to put out light, appropriately--but it's actually short for "noxious")
Bronzong: Simuri (In a language I sort of created, it means "mirror"; I named it when it was a Bronzor)
Spiritomb: Morticia (from the Addams Family)
Garchomp: Saphira (Eragon's dragon)
Lucario: Zorro (Spanish for fox, as Lucario looks foxlike to me)
Hippowdon: Sandy
Drapion: Claudia (includes "claw"*)
Toxicroak: Bellatrix* (because Toxicroak's cry sounds like how she might laugh)
Carnivine: Maude (includes "maw"*)
Lumineon: Butterfin (a dub name I came up with for this Pokemon--"butterfly fin")
Abomasnow: Tannenbaum (German for Christmas tree, as far as I know)
Dialga: Kingmond (A dub name I came up with for this Pokemon--"king diamond")
Uxie: Zelda
Mesprit: Link
Azelf: Ganondorf
Phione: Aqua

And some nicknames of other Pokemon from my other games I like:

Empoleon: Ukio (the emperor from Samurai 7)
Wobbuffet: Jessie
Chimecho: James
Happiny: Sunny Side
Banette: Lucius*
Buizel: Ron*
Sneasel: Percy*
Uxie: Dumbledore*
Azelf: Dobby*
Purugly: Minerva*
Gible: Draco* (although technically, it makes sense because Gible is draconic)
Kadabra: Sabrina

I also have a full Unown alphabet in Diamond, and all of them are nicknamed. But their nicknames start with their letter and represent their Hidden Power type. For example, a J Unown with HP Psychic would be Jean Grey, an A Unown with HP Steel would be Aluminum, a Q Unown with HP Bug would be Queen Bee, and a n H Unown with HP Flying would be Hikou. Sometimes I can't come up with a good name and end up with something like Z-Rock. My question-mark Unown is Flying? and my exclamation Unown is Fighting!.

Azumi March 25th, 2009 5:32 PM

I name them by their type and name at first...
Now I TRY to name them after nature, but it usually applies for the starter, cuz you can see the nature early.
All the others are random. Yeah.
But here's what I came up with:

Infernape - Sebastian (Sassy)
Staraptor - Stanford
Luxray - Tails (this has no relation to nature at all, just named him after the Sonic character, just because the Shinx family has a tail.)
Kadabra - Wes (After the Pokemon Colosseum guy)
Gastrodon - Hearts (THE ONLY FEMALE IN MA TEAM. DAMN YOU NINTENDO.)
Bidoof/Bibarel - HM Slave (Obviously...)
Eevee - Neil (Total randomness.)

That's all.

Get Away From That Outlet, Pikachu! March 25th, 2009 5:36 PM

Pikachu: Peekachoo
Infernape: Monkey
Floatzel: Enkai
Gengar: Shadou

lukefonfabre March 25th, 2009 5:37 PM

i give mine there Japanese names

World King March 25th, 2009 6:28 PM

I don't consider them nicknames, but I just put their names in lowercase letters, except the first one. Like "Lugia". And those with 7 letters or less, I add a "W. " before them.

BoomOfThe4thWall March 25th, 2009 7:02 PM

I name all the Pokemon in my long-term Platinum team after Greeco-Romanian gods and whatnot.

Monferno-- Hermes (The Messenger god; has the greatest speed of all Gods)

Grotle-- Atlas (Titan responsible for holding the world up)

Prinplup-- Poseidon (God of the Ocean)

Luxio-- Iopeter (Latin spelling of Jupiter; tose crazy Romans didn't have a J :D)

Staravia-- Artemis (The goddess of the Moon and hunt)

Bidoof-- Cyclops (Lesser beings loyal to the titans, like how Bidoof does all the HMing)

Pokemon I hope to get:

Togepi-- Demeter (Goddess of the harvest) or Aeolus (God of winds) if female/male

Ralts (male one only)-- Aphordite (No way am I gonna use a dawn stone on this one, oh no....)

Kai Lee Reddtail March 25th, 2009 9:27 PM

When I was playing good old blue version, I never did. Then when it got to later versions, I tried to nickname them all. Now I usually only nickname ones that are important to me. I try and put a lot of thought into them, because sometimes I think up personalities to go with them, and make them sort of like my own characters. I'll draw myself with my team and everything. Anyway, here's some:

Arcanine M:
Jerome (After a character from my favourite anime Ginga Densetsu Weed)
Kai (Me and my SO are respresented by our fav pokemon in game)

Lucario M:

MeiShurrai ("blue thunder", a character I created when I thought up a design and personality for my pikachu in yellow)

Ninetales F:
Kara (after my SO)
Karma (Suits her, no?)

Houndoom M:
Kurt (A shiny houndoom is blue, and the spaded tail reminded me of Nightcrawler from X-men. People think of him as a demon as well.)

Mightyena F:
Raksha
Tomoe (female warrior, and a character from Rurouni Kenshin)

Granbull M:
Goliath (After that one character from that old old show Gargoyles.)

Rayquaza:
Sultan (like King, but less common)

Seviper M:
Katana (I looked at the blade on the end of his tail and it stuck)

Meganium M:
Hemlocke (Poisonous plant)

Scyther M:
Sutoraiko

Shuckle:
Chuckie (I couldn't help thinking of this name when I heard shuckle. Chuckie the shuckle. Something made me think of Chuckie from Rugrats)

Venasaur M:
Oleander (another poisonous plant)

Quilava M:
Magumarashi (His Jap name which really appealed to me for some reason.)

Typhlosion M:
Kaen

Machamp M:
Miyagi (like Mr.Miyagi from the Karate Kid)

Venomoth M:
Viktor

Grovyle M:
Enrique

Sandslash M:
Miles

Tropius M:
Seraus

Absol:
Kataclyzm (corruption of the word "cataclysm", which is a disaster)

Rattata:
Remille (Played with the name "Remy", I had just seen Ratatouille)

Mudkip M:
Skipper (One of my less original ones)

Cubone M:
Misuteri (Thats what one japanese dictionary said was "mystery" translated. I thought of that because I was wondering what cubone's head looks like under that skull.)

Uxie, Azelf and Mesprit:
Gakuryoku, Kiryoku and Jouryoku respectively.
("Ryoku" is power. "Gaku" is knowledge, "ki" is will, and "jou" is emotion. Because they are the beings of knowledge, willpower and emotion.)

Muzaku (Sounded cool)

Jutsu (I'm not a huge fan of Naruto, but it's to do with the show, and they're ninjas)

Rapidash M:
Kajinn

Flareon M:
Jakkei

Vaporeon F:
Umi (I believe its some sort of water demon/goddess/thingy)

Jolteon M:
Takasu

Umbreon F:
Drakkuna (I probly threw some words together)

Espeon F:
Aurrah

Golduck M:
Lu-Kar

Lapras F:
Nefereti

Gyarados M:
Arkos (Means "king" in some language or another...)

Kabutops M:
Pheenux (corruption of "pheonix" because the fossil pokemon are ressurected)

Aerodactyl M:
Kohaku (Means "amber" because they were ressurected from "Old Amber")

Starly M:
Twink (I don't like starly and I thought it sounded like something mildly annoying. It's a WOW term of some sort I believe as well.)

Fearow M:
Tyrant (I thought of that episode where the fearow was scaring the pidgey)

Kecleon M:
Meerage (corruption of "Mirage")

Smeargle M:
Vinci (Like Leonardo Da Vinci)

Tauros:
Mynos (From "Minotaur", a mythical half-bull half-man)

Electabuzz M:
Taz (Like the cartoon tasmanian devil, dunno why I associate electabuzz with him)

Pachirisu F:
Teekah (Sounded like a squirrelish name)

Ghastly M:
Omen (A sign of bad luck)

Pidgeot M:
Artemis (The pidgeot names are names of hawks I've worked with at a local wildlife centre. It might also interest people to know, since Artemis is a somewhat common nickname for male pokemon/pets, that Artemis is the greek goddess of the hunt.)
Major (Short for "Major Attitude." A harris hawk. )
Misko (Means "red" in Cree. Was the name of a redtail hawk.)

Mewtwo:
Legion (I believe it's the name of a demon)
Seigfried (My fav Soul Calibur Character)

Amaruuk March 26th, 2009 8:04 AM

Well, now that I've got a nice team going in Platinum, I'll share their names:

Kakarot / Monferno - X3 This name finally fits! Infernape was based off the same "monkey king" legend as Dragonball, but I like the name Kakarot better
Orion / Skarmory - For some reason, I always name Skarmories after figures in Greek mythology
Garr / Feraligatr - The name sounded badass, and fits Feraligatr nicely
Lyra / Luxray - The Shinx line looks an awful lot like the art style from Kimba the White Lion, so she's named after a character
Rinku / Leafeon - Who's also from the forest and uses a blade? Link! <3
Darmani / Pupitar - I like naming all male Larvitar after Gorons, 'cause Gorons are awesome

I have some more in the box, and a zillion on my ranch from Diamond, but I'll spare you from all that reading. :3

BoomOfThe4thWall March 26th, 2009 11:58 AM

Uxie -- Balthasar

Azelf -- Gaspar

Mesprit -- Melchior

Dialga -- Chrono

Palkia -- Marle

Guess.

I give my Pokemon nicknames because it's cool and you can name them anything you want.

Åzurε March 26th, 2009 4:43 PM

So far I have:
Terrapin, the Torterra
Dis, the Giratina (the City of Hell in Dante's Inferno)

Haley, the Jirachi (came from Emerald)
Scion or DeusLaVolta for Arceus (second is latin or greek for "God wills it!")
Durza, Darkrai (as in the Shade from Eragon)
Logi, Charizard (Wildfire the Giant in Viking myths)
And finally...
Sexy Beast, the Metagross. It's, uh, kinda traditional at this point. ><;;;

Now for more of my Pokemon's nicknames:

Vaporeon: Triton

Hehe, that was my Shinx's name in Diamond.

I nickname every single Pokemon I catch, which means most of the names are pretty banal, like Quartz the Geodude, Wolfie the Mightyena, or Ohmmmmmmmm the Magnemite (found that one in my Sapphire box). I'm easily amused, so it works for me.

System! March 27th, 2009 7:37 PM

I don't really nickname my Pokemon that often...but for the Pokemon I did nickname:

Sapphire

Torchic: Kentucky
I always have to name my Torchic this for some reason. All the other Pokemon in my Sapphire game are never nicknamed (with the exception of Absol). Just the Torchic.

Absol: Disaster
Lack of creativity lulz.

Pearl

Turtwig: Irwin
...Turtwig just screams Irwin from The Grim Adventures of Billy and Mandy to me, I dunno why... Oh yeah, that one episode where he dresses up as a turtle, now I remember.

Luxray: Shadow
Well, they both look alike...

Feign April 12th, 2009 11:52 AM

Well the first nickname I gave my first pokemon, was my Bulbasaur (in pokemon blue), when I was 12ish years old. Don't laugh, but for some reason I decided on the name 'Coolboy'. God what was I thinking XD

Then again irl I had a cat named Fuzzy.

Alexithymia~ April 12th, 2009 11:57 AM

My Blaziken is called Cosette. I started the game after I had just seen Les Miserables.
When I chose Piplup as a starter I thought it looked a bit like Pingu so I called it that but when it evolved into this mighty pokemon the name didn't really match anymore.
I called my goldeen after my late fish, Tilly. Which I got from Tots Tv. :)

shadowsvengance April 12th, 2009 11:58 AM

Pidgey - Whisper
Butterfree - Light

dutchmuffin77 April 12th, 2009 4:54 PM

AshMelody April 12th, 2009 5:46 PM

I like the original names, so I never give mine any nicknames.
But I ever once named my Pikachu "Chuchu"...
...that's before I read Pokémon Special.
I was surprised when I read the chapter when Chuchu appeared. Ironically, I thought Chuchu was a manly name. XD

The Scientist April 12th, 2009 7:11 PM

Let's see, my Pokemon nicknames...

Arcanine- Schneider, after the orange-armored Liger Zero in Zoids. Liger Zero Schneider's signature move was also oddly similar to ExtremeSpeed.

Claydol- Pompeii, after the ancient ruins of the Roman city. They have actually found clay dolls in Pompeii, so...

Xatu- Chozo, after the psychokinetic bird aliens in Metroid.

Magnezone/Electrode- Voltech, a combination of "voltage" and "technology"

Tentacruel- Medusa, pretty straightforward.

Dusknoir- Eidolon, as "eidolon" is another word for a ghost.

Gliscor- Jaeger; after naming Arcanine Schneider, I wanted to have a Jaeger and Panzer on my team. Since my Gliscor was by no means a tank, I chose Jaeger.

Bronzong- Panzer, 'cause it's a tank.

Lugia- Ruhiel, after a purple-and-white Lightning Sky robo from the Custom Robo series.

Marowak (female)- GHOST. Do I need to explain this one?

Porygon-Z- uberhax.exe. Do I need to explain this one?

Metagross- Quadraxis, after the four-legged mech boss in Metroid Prime 2: Echoes.

Beedrill Lover April 13th, 2009 1:28 AM

What i nickname my pokemon (Bugs Rule is my fav nickname)
Beedrill/Buggy
Pinsir/Bugs Rule
Parasect/Mushroom
Venamoth/Mothy

Pumpkinz 4 Mayor April 13th, 2009 6:59 AM

I almost always give my pokemon nicknames, because It just seems boring to be like, "Go, Girafarig!" when it can be like, "Go, Melman!" (I named my girafarig melman once, it was hilarious!) ANyway, my team on Platinum is all nicknamed, I'll just tell you them:

Empoleon-Tsunami
Staraptor- Jet Plane
Rotom- DaCableGuy
Scizor- Freddy K.
Gardevoir- Elizabeth
Houndoom- Underdog

Beckie April 13th, 2009 10:34 AM

2. It looks ugly with names there
3. ... Yeah.

zappy_flash April 17th, 2009 9:03 PM

I usually give nicknames depended on the pokemon's type e.g Voltz, Flare etc but eventually I run out of Ideas

Gusxx1 April 17th, 2009 9:11 PM

I'm not creative enough to think of nicknames for pokemon sadly. There was probably 3 pokemon i nicknamed after like all the years ive been playing. I named my Aridos bugboy >.< I'm no way creative LOL

JakeProTrainer April 19th, 2009 11:36 AM

Even the ones I don't use.

I nickname ALL of my pokemon. Whether catching, breeding, or recieving from someone in-game, you can expect me to nickname them. Most of my nicknames contain references to historical or mythical figures, or shout outs to modern media. In addition, I go out of my way to breed a pokemon that fits a particular character in my fanfic, simply for the fun of it.
A few nicknames for pokemon that are important to me:
Lucona- female Lucario.
Quote- male Tyranitar
Kirly- female Gardevoir
Spruce- male Sceptile
Starlight- male Glaceon
Broiler- Female Camerupt
Sasha- Female Magmortar
Corona- Female Togekiss
Miz Dread- female Misdreavus
Galahad- male Gallade
Neoluna- male Espeon
Solana- female Flareon
And that's not even the start of it all!

Needle April 20th, 2009 3:30 AM

Actually I never give nicknames to my pokemon.

Pipoi April 20th, 2009 3:35 AM

I can't think of any nickname for a Pokemon.
I guess their given name just fits to them and no other than that. :D

Zelda April 20th, 2009 6:08 AM

I once had a Piplup and I nicknamed it Pippy, because that is what I call Piplup sometimes. xD

~Bliss :)

Zanny77 April 20th, 2009 6:56 AM

OK, first off, I never used to give nicknames. But ever since I got into the monotype challenges, I've been giving them nicknames. So:

I always name myself "Dan!!!!"
I always name my rival "Nipples"

As for Pokemon, it varies. I usually come up with weird nicknames for some random thing I think, or it's loosely related to the Pokemon. Like:
Chimchar = Copper?!?! (I was thinking of BrassMonky, but thought, hey? Y not Copper? And my brother said Copper?!?!, so yea)
Machoke = Reference? (I was debating to reference my other two Machokes (Cartoons!! from Hoenn or Different! from Kanto) but decided not to.
As for Cartoons!! and Different!, Cartoons!!, when I caught it, I had said Oh Yeah!, making me remember "Oh Yeah! Cartoons!", so I decided to go with the later instead of Oh Yeah!. As for Different!, At the time of that Machop's capture, I then had a team of:
Mankey
Mankey
MACHOP (Different!)
Mankey
Mankey
Mankey
............
Poliwag = HomagesSuk (In this case, making sure not to make an homage to Swirly, my Poliwag from Kanto)
Mankey = DarwinSux (Monkey, Darwin, related?)
Any bird I catch to be a Fly Slave = Fly Slave? (In Kanto, I didn't know if I was allowed to have a Fly Slave, so I caught it and put a ? because I wasn't sure, but it has stuck)
For any cut slave = Cut Slave? (See above)
Hitmonchan = StingLikeQ (Sting Like a B? No, he stings like a Q.)
Hitmonchan = UWontBATop (He was NOT going to be a stupid frickin Hitmontop)
Meditite/Heracross = Finally!!! (Different stories here. Meditie, I had to wait (in Hoenn) until VICTORY ROAD to get it. Heracross...I spent A WHOLE FRICKIN HOUR HEADBUTTING THE WRONG TREES. If you headbutt below Ecruteak, good luck finding one, cause you won't. I went East of Ecruteak, headbutted 4 times, and got it.)
Slowpoke = I R MEME?! (lolz)
All Magikarps = Crap (Because they are. It's almost in the name!!)
Articuno = DelibirdSr (It's seriously just an over-hyped Delibird)
Kyogre = PidgeyFood (It's sooooo weak, it's Pidgey food)
Blaziken = Chic N Stu (Chicken Pokemon? Famous SoaD song? Oh yes. :]

DaiLinn April 20th, 2009 7:01 AM

I'm currently naming my male Pokemon after Hetalia characters (and a few females), and my female Pokemon after Touhou characters. With some exceptions--such as my Bidoof, Blockhead.
