Mario & Luigi PiT Review

Hello people, this is Cadet Falcon with his very first of many reviews for…

MARIO & LUIGI: PARTNERS IN TIME

Developed by: Alphadream
Published by: Nintendo
Console: Nintendo DS

The second instalment in the Mario & Luigi RPG series and if you’re wondering, no you don’t need to play the first game to get this one. Here’s the review:

STORY

Professor E. Gadd has made a time machine and Princess Peach (and several Toads) go in to go to past Mushroom Kingdom. After several weeks the princess doesn’t return and that’s when the destroyed time machine returns. When they look inside, they find a strange monster. After defeating it, a time hole appears. Time holes are rips in the space/time continuum that send you to the past. Mario and Luigi bravely jump in to rescue the princess. Well actually Mario had to drag his brother in the hole. It turns out that creature is called a Shroob and they’re starting to take over the past. At the past kingdom Baby Mario & Luigi are stopping a young Bowser Jr. from kidnapping the Baby Princess Peach. That’s when big Mario & Luigi come in and bring back the babies leading them all over past Mushroom kingdom with the babies on their older counterparts’ backs.

CONCEPT

In the game, you will be Mario & Luigi carrying the babies on their back but sometimes the twosome will need to split up to complete puzzles and other challenges. Besides that this is just your regular part RPG part incredible Mario game as usual. Mario & Luigi of coarse can jump twice as high as the babies but the babies can fit into spaces the big guys can’t fit until they get a special ability. Unfortunately this game has no way of doing anything with any other DS but you can’t really expect that from an RPG.

CONTROLS

Of coarse the controls will be like any other RPG on a handheld. Up is up, left is left, right is right and down is down. Also it doesn’t have that thing that makes left a diagonal and by the time you figure out you can change it on any other game, you’re already used to it. A is to jump with Mario, B is to jump with Luigi, X is to jump with baby Mario and Y is to jump with baby Luigi. Pretty simple. If Mario and Luigi are piggy backing the babies than the babies will jump off and go higher than the big Mario and Luigi. Also if you jump with let’s say Mario and you press X at the top, Baby Mario will jump a little higher to hit special boxes.

HISTORY

The first Mario RPG was on the Super NES named,’ Super Mario RPG: Secret of the Seven Stars. Which was actually made by Square. Which is guess what, Square Enix, creators of the Final Fantasy and Kingdom Hearts series. It was so successful that they made another Mario RPG called none other than,’ Paper Mario’. Which led to a Gamecube sequel called,’ Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door’ and the most recent,’ Super Paper Mario’ for the Wii. Soon enough Alphadream and Nintendo made the legendary,’ Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga’ which of coarse led to,’ Mario & Luigi: Partners in Time’. There is a third Mario & Luigi RPG in the making which I am so gonna buy but let’s stick to this game for a while.

BAD

Okay, I only really have two problems with this game. Number one, absolutely no uses of the touch screen. That was kind of a rip off you couldn’t even use it as an alternative to using the D-Pad you couldn’t use it at all. Number two, Mario & Luigi are pretty weak without the babies on their backs. For instance, you can’t use the hammers unless you’re the babies and the babies can still jump. Also there are some Bros. Items (I’ll explain those later) that require all four Mario Bros. to be there. Mario & Luigi should be able to kick butt without the babies. Oh and the original Superstar Saga had minigames now and then but this game doesn’t

GOOD

Obviously, this game has way more good that bad. For one, the annoying Bros. Points which was just MP for Bros. Moves, has been removed and replaced with Bros. Items. Each one has their own way of use and some are very similar like the Copy Flowers, Trampoline and the Cannonball items. Another thing is that if you have the babies on the big bros. backs you can attack twice while jumping and make hammering even stronger. This game took everything that was good about Superstar Saga and made it twice as good. If I had to list my 10 favourite games of all time this game would definitely be in the top 5. This game deserves a well earned 92.13 out of 100.

Super Mario Bros. is owned by Nintendo!

Oh, and the DS is also owned by Nintendo
