How much can your computer do before it slows down?

How much can you do on your computer before it will slow down?

I personally right now am talking to like 10 people on AIM/WLM, listening to iTunes, have like 3-4 Safari windows open, INstalling Adobe Premiere, Running a search, and have Winrar open. And there is no Lag.

How about you?

wakachamo October 25th, 2008 4:56 PM

Well, all I can say is that I have on average 2 Safari windows open (one of which has about 10 tabs most of the time), my Mail client open, 5 people's chats open, a Skype call, my IRC client open while having iTunes open (checking and downloading for new podcast episodes as well as synchronizing my devices), iPhoto and iWeb open, as well as having Dashboard open and having Time Machine make a backup in the background.

I've tried all of this while converting a large video file, and my iMac still ran at full speed.

Aegis October 25th, 2008 5:00 PM

On my laptop I can only have FireFox (with 5 or so tabs) and MSN open before I start getting lag :[

But on my desktop, I've had up to 10 WLM conversations, an AIM conversation, a Skype call, mIRC, my music player, AVG updating, FireFox open with 15+ tabs, IE open (For school), MS Word, World of Warcraft, and I don't have any lag what-so-ever :D

Number of windows open in the background is generally fairly arbitrary, as all modern OS-es have preemptive multitasking that reduces the priority of background tasks.

As for the amount of actual tasks my computer can handle at once, it's not a great number. I can't, for example have a video encoding and a NES emulator going at the same time without some jerkiness. Leaving flash on in the background or having Antivirus up seems to slow such things down also.

Well, my computer has always been slow, but, before it gets noticeably slow, I can do a lot of things, like for example,

* have 4 Opera windows opened, 15 to 20 tabs each (4 of them the Pokecommunity forums:cheeky:)
* six terminals running different commands, two of them syncing files with a remote server I'm working at.
* running a virtual machine which hosts a webserver, which autoconnects and syncs with one of the remote servers from above
* listening to some radios while at the same time the system grabs and stores the audio.
* hooking up to the collegue's computer systems to watch who is everyone doing in the lounge (not in RT but with updates every minute)
* writing four documents in the word processor
* taking part of the [email protected] project (ie.. crunching data just in case it happens to be a martian greeting).
* if I close one or two apps, I have enough responsivity to play some games.

Well... that would be right now.

they say a picture is worth a thousand words, so I thought instead of just saying that my computer can run 2 virtual machines, three Adobe Pro Apps, safari, rosetta, Transmission and still run pretty well, I thought I'd just show you.

*sigh* I love OSX font rendering. Why can't windows have that? :'(

I've got quite a few windows open right now but nothing really high end. When I have like 5 tabs in Google Chrome open each using Flash my computer starts to lag.

Try turning on cleartype. ;)

Right click desktop -> Properties -> Appearance -> Effects

2nd scroll box down will have two options, Standard and Cleartype. Turn cleartype on. Once you've done this, you can download the cleartype tuner to adjust it's strength.

P.S. If you have Vista, the process is probably a bit different, and I think it's turned on by default in Vista anyway.

Sora_8920 October 26th, 2008 6:36 AM

Hm, well, due to a myriad of programs being installed on my computer, it slackens the speed extremely.

Hence, it doesn't take much to lag my computer badly.

Bianca Paragon October 26th, 2008 6:43 AM

My computer doesn't slow down.
Ever.

Virtual Chatot October 26th, 2008 8:30 AM

The only time I lag on my Mac is when I'm running a VirtualBox, but that's to be understood.

Ubuntu Linux laptop starts to lag a little bit when I'm running Photoshop in WINE, and also on firefox at the same time.

Mr. Epic October 26th, 2008 9:55 AM

My old computer damn lets not talk about it but with this beast, I don't know what it can't handel!

Aizuke October 26th, 2008 12:22 PM

Ahaha.. Having WLM, Photoshop, WMP and Firefox all open at the same time will kill my computer. XD;

Yay for lack of RAM. :D

Just having any 2 of the above opened and my computer lags a little. ;;

Sounds October 26th, 2008 12:39 PM

my comuter never slows down witha good conection,if it does its a connection problem

Kirakishou October 26th, 2008 12:42 PM

The short answer to the question is: not as much as I'd like it to.
Although its usually fairly good with webpages and the likes...its when it comes to downloading pretty much anything that it decides to spit in my face and sulk in a corner.

Gary, the Magic Fairy October 26th, 2008 2:49 PM

It can start up before it slows down. :D

On second thought, that's not always even true. XD *kicks computer*

Zanacross October 26th, 2008 5:05 PM

I have my virtual Machine running Debian
mIRC
WinAmp
Paint
GTA SA
Bully
Windows life+ but all all my chats are grouped in one window
FF2 with about 15 tabs
Utorrent
about 15 folders open
and feed demon
but thats only what I have now.

Mr. Pokemon October 26th, 2008 7:03 PM

Sometimes, I can open just the Start menu if I'm lucky. :P But honestly not much. I have less than 1GB of memory on both my computers (though plenty of HDD space), a decent processor but a crappy integrated graphics chip ( can't play nothin'!)

Not matter what computer I use though, IE7 is always horribly slow. It has to freakin' connect to a new tab which is just a blank page. I have a dream tonight... and it is that Microsoft will abandon their craptastic web browser in favor of Firefox. I can dream can't I? It will never happen, remember Microsoft brought us product activation. ;)

txteclipse October 26th, 2008 7:16 PM

It doesn't lag much, like ever. I go to a college with like T1 internet or something, so I get anywhere from 200-950 KB/s.

suicidesal October 26th, 2008 7:24 PM

The only time I've ever experienced any type of lag with my computer is when I've opened a .pdf of my undergraduate calender which is 300+ pages and its only that program and while doing a lot of other stuff...
I dont really demand a lot of my computer

Unforgettable November 6th, 2008 8:52 AM

I don't lag often. But if I have many msn converstations or huge group convos, photoshop, and multiple tabs on firefox open, I do tend to lag...

mewthree w/armor November 6th, 2008 9:23 AM

About 100 tabs open in one Mozilla Firefox Window.
or
Play Crysis Warhead in general.
or
Run AVG. That slows down EVERYTHING. XD

Obito. November 6th, 2008 10:01 AM

I dont lag often. my comp was just upgraded xD

I have a game minimized (COD4), 6 MSN convos and 2 yahoo convos up, 12 firefox windows, utorrent, windows media player (DVD) and AVG runjnins scans and its not lagging at all

Confuse November 6th, 2008 7:16 PM

Mine's reliable, but it does break under a lot of programs easily. I'll have AIM, 2 IE windows, iTunes, and GIMP goin' and sooner or later, it just stops.

That's why I try to avoid this as much as possible.

Gummy November 6th, 2008 10:10 PM

I don't have godly amounts of RAM (or even semi-godly) so my max is probably Firefox with 3+ tabs and open and Photoshop before things noticeably slow down.
