DS lite cracked hinge
Okay, so after looking around on the Internet I find that this is apparently pretty old news. However, my own DS lite's hinge cracked last month and the top screen now is playing up by displaying all sorts of wonderful colours instead of the actual game, I'm wondering if anyone knows how much this will cost to fix? I understand Nintendo did fix this problem for free in 2006, but this is two years later now and my warranty already expired early 2007.
Right now, would it be best to try to get it fixed, or would it be cheaper to buy a new console altogether? |
I would have no idea on how much it would cost...
My brother has a similar issue with his DS lite, one of the hinges has broken, where as mine, had it for exactly the same time, has lasted for a while now. Just unlucky that you had to happen to get a faulty 1. Just out of curiosity... have you been neglecting it? like dropping it on the floor by accident? |
I had a hinge problem for my DS lite too. The hinge cracked and got loosened and would keep flopping around. It cost 80$ for me to get it fixed, and only a few weeks later the top screen got bright green lines dashing thorugh it whenever I would play.
That's just what happened to me, and it's up to you. It may be a better idea to probably purchase a new one, to try and avoid something else going wrong on the DS, I'm not sure, actually! Anyways, I hope I helped out a little bit! |
judging from the fact that you said your warranty expired, I'd think it would be safe to say that getting a new console would be the cheaper route, just because a repair would cos around $80 minimum. another 40 and you'd have a brand new system with a warranty.

I have the same problem. However, I'm pretty sure what caused it. I was using the Wondermail Generator for PMD2 and I left it open beside me. When I turned to pick it up, I noticed my 16 lb (7 kg for those of you who don't live in the U.S.) cat laying down on top of it >_< And it's been this way for 3 months. Fortunately it still plays okay--it's just annoying how it flops around. I really want to either get it fixed or get another one but...I have no job and my income comes from my parents. And since I was careless...I would have to say that I'm pretty much out of luck. I can try putting it on my Xmas list but.....eh...........it's pretty much a lost cause. I have visions of stealing one from some little kid. At least his parents will get him another one. :\ (Nah, I'm not gonna do that. I'd go to jail!)
So yeah, since the function is messed up as well, you might as well just get a new one. |
Hmmm....I say get a new NDS
My brother had one of the hinges cracked too and he had it fixed but it costs around $70-$85 (can't remember price but it's somewhere around that area) But I would just recommend to buy a new nintendo DS.

I'm not so sure about the colors deal though. I've never had that happen to me, so I guess I can say that I agree with anything other people have told you. Sorry I couldnt be more help to you. ;-; |

It's worth calling Nintendo of Wherever and asking if they'd be prepared to fix it. You might be surprised.
It might even be worth hanging in there until the NZ (for the OP) release of the DSi. My chunky old DS Classic is still running fine, it's rather ironic. |
I've got the same problem, without the colours, it just flops up and down, the stupid hinges broke, can't remember how, but I've got used to it now, must have happened about a year ago. There's no point fixing it for me, I quite like it <3 lol

If you are going to get a new DS (Lite I'm assuming), make sure you get a crystal case. They take off some of the pressure placed on the hinges.

Yes...My brothers DS has a problem at the moment, blue stars are forming at the top and bottom of his DS and one of my DS speakers wont work >.<
My parents wont by us new DS as we should be "Concentrating on our studies" >.< |

The touchscreen on mine failed after less than a year (tap top-left, it will register middle-left, and calibration gets stuck in an infinite loop) but that's probably due to me having 2 younger brothers and a sister. Its screen only goes to about a quarter of the brightness of the Lite, too. |
This goes in the gaming forum.

Thanks for the replies everyone!

And on a side note, I don't think the DSi will be released here in NZ for at least another year. o.o Quote:

Uh... I feel like an idiot because I'm contradicting myself with this post. 99% of you probably won't understand what I mean though. So don't ask. o.o
Anyway, you can fix the DS Lite yourself. There are numerous cheap but excellent quality third-party replacement housing cases you can buy on the internet for a very small price. Don't expect it to be an easy procedure though. |
Wow... Lucky me, I have a cracked hinge, but it doesn't flop around... Yet. I'd better be carefull...
|
My DS only has the L button broken and I lost my warranty. Either way, when CycloDS works with DSi, then I'll buy a new DS or a DSi.

Yeah, I hate it when it gets cracked.
Hmmmmm. Well in the U.S. (I got no idea where you live so..) a new console would cost bout say $130. To get it fixed, about $80, but it almost never works a properly as before the crack. I'd get a new system. Go crazy! Its only bout a $40 addition. But thats what I say. This never did happen to me, though, LOL, At a school trip, my friend brought the old DS along. At one time there was a fly next to the top screen. I was about to hit it, but another kid did instead, and he broke it! Well, Like I said, go with a new one, but thats just me. Its really up to you. |
I just remembered something that happened on Halloween. One of my friends' named Chris brought his DS to school. Then, after I pwned Chris during a Mario Kart DS match 4 times in a row. He was so surprised that he left go of his DS... and it dropped. His hinge flew off, and his top was disconnected. He has a few DS's though.
