How smart are pokemon?

I am having trouble writhing my Pokemon POV, I don't know how smart to make the Pokemon..

How smart is the common, average Pokemon that you would find in the wild, and how does the intelligence level differ with tame Pokemon.

Now I know that a lot of answers are going to be start out with: "Depends on the Pokemon," and I already know that. What I am asking is how smart is a Pokemon compared to the animals of our world.

Examples:

Growlithe vs. Dog

Pikachu vs. Mouse/Rat

Some Pokemon's Pokedex entry says that they are smart, examples of this would be Lapris, and Luciro. That makes it easy, but what about the hundreds others that their intelligence level is never mentioned.

I'd just go with real-world examples. Also, psychic pokemon seem to tend to be smarter than others, since a lot of them can communicate telepathically.

I'd say that to some extent, all Pokemon possess some form of a higher intellegence-- after all, you can teach them specific attacks, which they (seem) to remember. As txteclipse mentioned, psychics are probably higher in brains (nigh-human to above-human?).

I'd consider Ghost-types to be in the same vein as Psychics as well, given their habits (anime at least) to not only scare the sh** out of people, but to play clever tricks. That last one in itself shows some form of higher intellegence, even for the ones that can't speak the human language.

The legendaries probably have some of the highest intellegence, being what they are-- really powerful Pokemon/ the gods of the Sinnoh myths (or all gods, as some like myself want to believe ^^).

Alakazam is said to be smarter than a supercomputer.

Salamance wanted wings so he worked hard and when he involved tada he got em.

All Pokemon can understand human speech, so I'd say they're at least smarter than poodles, which are the smartest breed of dog and about as smart as a 2-year-old (if I remember right). And Pokemon have a language of their own - if "Pika pi! Pikachu" really counts as a language - so they may be smarter than that. I would write them as a sentient "race" that has been dominated and enslaved by humans for generations, but that's my personal pet peeve.

DGexe December 19th, 2008 4:37 PM

Sentient and incapable of human speech (um... over all, since the majority do not normally use human speech)?

Ninja Caterpie December 19th, 2008 4:43 PM

Smart. They can understand human commands and language (to some extent).

I'd say they're as smart (maybe smarter) than dolphins.

The average pokemon would have the intellegance of at least later years child to yearly teen in thier final evolution, depending on species. I remember Ash's Charizard acted alot like my fiance's friend's 14 year old brother... with a built in flame thrower...

Psychics would be vastly smarter then humans (except human psychics) but only wouldn't speak in human languages due to being PHYSICALLY unable to.

Legendaries, I remember Lugia and Ho-oh being portrayed as wise elders in the Pokemon 2000 movie so I'd say they're immensely smart, especially when you consider Mewtwo is the youngest... with all the rest being several thousand years old, or perhaps even older... that eons of knowlege! Note to Self: Never challenge a Legendary to a riddle contest unless you have one with no solution.

Pokemon's intelligences, I think, vary.

Think of Rhyhorn, a Pokemon said not to be quite smart. (Rhinos themselves aren't too bright)
And then we have Lapras, who can understand human speech. I think it was said Lucario could also understand humans...

... But doesn't that lead us to believe that only some Pokemon can understand human speech? I think it's safe to say most Psychic types can understand human speech (Alakazam, Espeon, for example) and are pretty darn smart.

And then we have Meowth, who is basically a cat. Team Rocket's managed to learn how to speak and walk on two legs, so you can guess that if a Meowth is intelligent enough to speak, a whole bunch of Pokemon are pretty intelligent.

And I think Pokemon mature faster than humans do, like dogs. A few years and they know pretty much anything they need to know to survive. It takes humans a lot longer to do that, and we don't have instincts are strong as theirs.

What am I trying to say here? One Pokemon can certainly be smarter than the other. Try and use world references and, when you can't, use common sense. Think about the rate certain Pokemon may mature, what they need to learn to survive according to their environment. An Eevee living in a city is going to be more street smart than one that lives in the wild, but they city Eevee probably won't know much about how to find food in a forest.

Like humans, there are a lot of dimensions to Pokemon intelligence. The one thought they all constantly share is identical to most every animal we know today: survivial.

(That was probably all over the place xD)
