Pokemon: Broken Beacon

A hack by Malin and Luke

This is currently our planning thread. Don't expect more than a story and us jotting down our ideas for now. No screenshots, betas, anything for now. This is something we have been "working" on for a month or two now. However, we're taking our base ideas for now and starting fresh.

Opening Sequence

Spoiler:
You play as a fifteen year old resident of the sacred country Delmar. In several months, Ho-oh, the guardian of the island, will be making its centennial visit. The people of the island are preparing a massive celebration not only for Ho-oh, but for the return of the sun as well. As with tradition, the sun has always disappeared in the year running up to Ho-oh's arrival. This is said to occur so the residents of the island appreciate the gifts Ho-oh bestowed upon them: clean air, protection from storms, and bountiful harvests.

As tribute, the people of the island have erected numerous places of worship in Ho-oh's honor. A central church formed from these churches. It is headed by the elected Apostle Cristiano and his four Cardinals. They guide the celebration preparations and personally greet Ho-oh when it lands on its roost at the top of the Gendile Cathedral.

While you slumber one night, you have the most peculiar dream. What appears to be Ho-oh comes to you for help. The winds have informed it that the Apostle and his four Cardinals have hatched a grandiose scheme that will come into fruition on the day of its arrival on the island. There is little it can do as its visit is mandated by its master Arceus. It is also restricted from inflicting bodily harm on a human being, so when it lands and the heads of the church make their move, there is little Ho-oh can do to defend itself. So again it asked the winds for guidance, seeking a human to aide it. And from the wind's whispers, your character's name was brought forward.

Then, the dream abruptly ends, with Ho-oh requesting the player go to the next town and talking to a priest named Yamil. He will explain everything further, as Ho-oh's time with the player is limited. You are then left with a choice. Ho-oh wishes for one his three guardians to accompany the player on their journey: the Avatar of the Shadows, the Cherubim of the Sky, or the Dancer of the Earth. The player quickly picks what sounds like suits them best, and abruptly awakens.

Confused, the player wonders if it was all a dream. They decide to head to the next town and see if everything they envisioned was real...

I like the story but I think it should be simplified a bit more. Love how you used Ho-oh as a religious figure though,, haven't seen that around here very much.

Ooh, ooh! This looks mighty nice! So, what're each of youse doing? Malin mapping and scripting ? Or is he scripting?

Anyway, it sounds really, really nice and interesting and all!

Britney Spears is going to do all of the mapping and I'll be doing the scripting. We're not actually going to start for a while though. We want to get as much planning out of the way as possible before we start.

I'm guessing the "guardians" are Pokémon?
...
The "Avatar of the Shadows" would be Gastly, no?
The "Cherubim of the Sky"... Uh...Swably?
The "Dancer of the Land"...Trapinch? xP Diglett?

lol

You got the typing right for the Avatar of the Shadows. You also got the typing for the last evolution for the Sky. The Dancer of the Land isn't a Ground-type.

The story really isn't that complicated:

Island sacred to Ho-oh
Shrouded in darkness in the year before Ho-oh arrives
Child visited in dream and told they need to protect the God from humans
Quest and stuff

ta-da

Alright, I have better guesses.
Duskull, Bagon and Roselia!

I can't think of anything else that has flying only in it's final evolution...

GKS December 23rd, 2008 4:26 PM

Well, good luck, I can't say too much without seeing screens or anything. Seeing your's and Trace's other hack, this should be good too.

But isn't the child a human?

Ninja Caterpie December 23rd, 2008 5:11 PM

The particular humans, I would guess.

Naruto Uzumaki The Nine Tailed Fox December 24th, 2008 7:10 PM

The game sounds very intruging, I like the plot and the storyline
Can't wait for some screenshots.

Just a few updates:

Spoiler:
Instead of PokeCenters, there will be Inns. You'll get charged 100 dollars to use a room for the entire day. There may be a surprise waiting for you if you stay at certain inns, so it's worth the money.

Due to the connection with Ho-oh, the city of Ecruteak will be making an appearance. No, not the actual city, but a replica. It will feature the Kimono Sisters, the two towers, and a gym. There are some other surprises, including the presence of a certain legendary trio.

Your rival in this game isn't a friend from your youth. It's a young girl sent by the church to keep an eye on you after beating the first gym. She'll follow you around the island, and she'll change as the game progresses.

The starters are going to be:

"Avatar of the Shadows" - Duskull / Dusclops / Dusknoir
"Cherubim of the Sky" - Togepi / Togetic / Togekiss
"Dancer of the Land" - Budew / Roselia / Roserade

Since they're personifications of Ho-oh's guardians, don't expect them to be like the rest of their species. They'll have boosted stats and perhaps special attacks.

That's all for now.

Report me for double posting and I'll kill you

The Apostle and the Four Cardinals

Spoiler:

Name: Ego
Hails from: Ryuku Town
An old, wise man. He is one of the few residents of Delmar who was alive during Ho-oh's last visit (he was only two months old). Despite his age, his body is fit and nimble. It is said this is a blessing given to him by the Apostle himself. His grandson happens to be a Pastor, a position given to him by Ego. In battle, he prefers to evade and confound rather than tackling the opponent head on. He is a personification of the sin pride.
  • Cradily
  • Victreebel
  • Exeggutor
  • Pelipper
  • Muk

Name: Fiona
Hails from: Cantabary City
A cute, young girl. She was once a servant of the pastor Christina, but an oracle selected her as the next Cardinal. Completely inexperienced in battle, she was plucked away from her servitude and placed under the tutorship of the Apostle himself. Now considered to be a top tier trainer. Holds a special place in the Apostle's heart as he never had children of his own. Personification of the sin envy.
  • Clefable
  • Altaria
  • Raichu
  • Sandslash
  • Grumpig

Name: Reginald
Hails from: Galane City
The top tracker in all of Delmar. Before becoming a pastor, then a cardinal, he was a much sought after bounty hunter. Often employed by the Apostle to track down heretics and rebels, he eventually found himself in the Apostle's inner circle. His Pokemon are barely tamed. He intended to keep them as feral as possible to prevent human tampering in their natural abilities. Personification of the sin wrath.
  • Poliwrath
  • Piloswine
  • Pidgeot
  • Hypno
  • Ursaring

Name: Victor
Hails from: Somewhere in Hoenn
A towering, intimidating man who above anyone else, is the Apostle's closest advisor. He was drawn to the island sixteen years ago by a mysterious dream. His Pokemon are foreign and almost never found on the island, which often leaves his opponent's confused as what do against them in battle. He is the commander of the Delmarian Guards. Said to be a skilled swordsman and ladies man. Not one to mince words. Loves money and will do anything to make a profit. Personification of the sin greed.
  • Hariyama
  • Aggron
  • Tropius
  • Sableye
  • Manectric

The Apostle and the Four Cardinals

Spoiler:
Ego
"The longest serving of the Cardinals. Old and wise and slightly insane. Obsessed with video games and making long winded speeches. Prefers to annoy and confound instead of brute strength. Personification of the sin: pride."

Pokemon
Cradily
Victreebel
Wailord
Camerupt
Exeggutor

Fiona
"The youngest of the Four Cardinals. Cute and charismatic, she is also the least reluctant of the four to go along with the plan. Coming from a religious family, she feels it's her duty. Personification of the sin: envy."

Pokemon
Clefable
Misdreavus
Raichu
Sandslash
Flareon

Reginald
"A middle aged man. Deeply connected with nature. Quick to anger and violence. Goes along with the plan in hopes of fighting the legendary Ho-oh. Personification of the sin: wrath.

Pokemon
Ursaring
Houndoom
Grumpig
Breloom
Stantler

Victor
"A young, strapping Admiral in the church's navy. Took the position as a Cardinal for the paycheck. Fiercely loyal to the Apostle and considers himself to be the Apostle's bodyguard. Personification of the sin: greed.

Pokemon
Poliwrath
Bellossom
Ampharos
Espeon
Kingler

Y'know, I really like this whole idea. I hope it could be turned into a successful hack. ^^

Anyways, are you two planning on making personifications of the other three sins (Lust, Gluttony, Sloth [a.k.a. Lazy])? They might be a bit harder, but I'm sure I can think of a few for Gluttony. :D

Ninja Caterpie January 4th, 2009 11:23 PM

Bee-eautiful. I got Duskull right. ;D

Oh, and GOMHP,U (:D), it's alright to double post if the post is an update with information in it. :D

Anyway, this is looking quite wonderful. You really should make an inn where the keeper lets you in free and steals all your money at night. [/mindless FFVI reference]

Oh, and lol at video game-loving cardinal. :P

*Reports immediately*
*Buys a metal coat to prevent a violent whipping*
*And also a bullet proof vest*

Well, as I told you in MSN, I didn't want to take the time to read ALL of that, but I did skim, and read parts that caught my interest. I have to admit, it's a really interesting idea, and with you and Malin working together, this hack will be a hit!

Just so you know, there wasn't any reporting involved \o/

luke January 9th, 2009 11:24 AM

I finished the first map today after four revisions. I'm finally happy with the results. Soon we'll be scripting in everything and hopefully there might be some screenshots. Stay tuned.

The Pastors

(Gym Leaders)

Spoiler:

Name: Jeffrey
Found in: Thessolina City
A lieutenant in the Delmarian Guard. He was assigned to Thessolina to keep an eye on the residents. The city is known as a hub for rebel activity, so having a member of the guard running the city was vital. He's a stout, middle aged man who's never seen without his armor. Incredibly religious and devout to the church. His philosophy in life is the best offense is defense. His selection of Pokemon reflect this.
  • Koffing
  • Sudowoodo

Name: Taylor
Found in: Galane City
A quiet, serene nun. A dedicated pacifist who frowns upon any unnecessary fighting. An avid naturalist who is often missing from her church. Because of this, she is usually found in the forest outside of the city, either swimming or climbing trees. Very passionate about church matters and ensuring the Gods are happy. Her philosophy in battle is to end things as quickly as possible to ensure as little long term damage.
  • Chimecho
  • Wooper
  • Breloom

Name: Jun
Found in: Ryuku Town
A teenaged boy obsessed with the future. He is enthralled with the culture of Kanto. He is very loud, obnoxious, and sometimes rude. Before facing Jun, one must retrieve an item inside of an insect-ridden cave. This well is found in the center of the town. Unlike most pastors, he isn't very religious. He gained this position through his grandfather, who happens to be the Cardinal Ego.
  • Magnemite
  • Kadabra
  • Golduck

Name: Jessica
Found in: Savanna City
A burlesque, powerful woman. She is rumored to be working with the rebels, so she has been fervently stomping out rebel activity in hopes of proving her loyalty. While not tending to the gardens her city is famous for, she is said to be on the cliffs nearby, painting the landscape. Her husband is a pastor in another city. They often take turns visiting one another, so one can expect her to absent for sporadic periods.
  • Furret
  • Mantine
  • Nidoqueen
  • Marowak

Name: Matthew
Found in: Kaeturce City
Guardian of the largest city in Delmar. Bedecked in a robe and mask, none have seen his true face. Some question if his real name is even Matthew. Rumored to be the brother of the Apostle himself. Originally a Cardinal, he stepped down several years ago and only recently reappeared, assuming the position of a Pastor. His team had changed from the past, but his skill was still the same.
  • Bellossom
  • Houndoom
  • Persian
  • Slaking

Name: Aidan
Found in: Angelos Mountain
The newest Pastor whose skill impressed the Apostle. Because of this, he received the highly coveted position at Angelos Mountain. Incredibly intelligent and well-mannered. Efficient in every way of life. Completely restructured the promotion system within the church and the way to church collects funds from its followers. Husband of Jessica.
  • Golem
  • Walrein
  • Skarmory
  • Magmar
  • Delibird

Name: Christina
Found in: Cantabary City
Considered the 'Queen' of the Pastors. Silent, elegant, yet she exudes a great deal of power. When one needs to speak on half of the church, Christina is usually the one to do so. She's ruthless in battle and her Pokemon are completely in sync with her. Prone to bouts of depression or rage, which she usually ends up taking out on the people of her city.
  • Ninetales
  • Milotic
  • Misdreavus
  • Crobat
  • Flygon

Name: Marc
Found in: Mannheim Town
A jaded, old sea captain who speaks with a German-like accent. Some say he was visited by Ho-oh while sailing the seas and upon hearing there was an island devoted to the God, he immediately sought refuge there. Incredibly loyal and strong, his skill in battle is rivaled outside of the Apostle only by the Cardinals and possibly Matthew. His town is the main port of the island where all visitors first arrive.
  • Machamp
  • Dragonite
  • Wailord
  • Camerupt
  • Scizor

Thanks. I've been working on their concepts for a month now.

A Peak at Corinth Town

I think it's one of the best maps I've ever done. The large brick building and the Mart are placeholders. They'll be replaced when Malin has time to insert tiles. We'll definitely be scripting soon. Again, this all depends on when Malin isn't busy.

Mitchman January 19th, 2009 11:06 AM

S-Mod GOoMHPU and Mod Thrace are working together to make a hack about ho-oh and it involves religion things? Sweet. Also since they are the guardians if I may, shouldnt they also be like with a special pattern and look different from the rest? Anyway i find this excellent and i hope to see more. Your mapping skills are good i can say that but the map does need a bit less empty space. Good luck have fun and BOL!

Tropical Sunlight January 20th, 2009 4:35 AM

One of your best maps? OMG sorry but the map is really not so good.
