Review of The Union Room

Yesterday, I yet again got to play the real English versions of Fire Red and Leaf Green - I just love these preview and play events. This one had me travelling all the way down to London's Excel Centre however to get there. It was worth the trip, so all was good.

Anyway, on the preview copies of FR and LG, all GBs (about 16 or so) had the Wireless Communicator attached to them, and I even managed to have a trainer battle with this. It works just as well as a link cable. I'd caught like 5 other L2-L3 Pidgeys during play, so I stomped over this opponent with just a L7 Squirtle. Also, I did get chance to play around in the Union Room (something you ROM people probably won't get to play with).

To get to the Union Room, you go upstairs in a Pokemon Centre, and talk to the centre attendant. After linking up, you are transported to a large room, where there is a lot of space to walk about in (you can fit 40 people in one Union Room, so it has to be large). There is a Nurse Joy on attendance, and you can speak to her and trade in the Union Room itself.

Also, you can talk to the other people in the room. You select a message the same way you would select a name for a Pokemon, up to 15 characters per line, and send to whoever you were chatting to. It's a nice little feature, and works pretty well.

Cyclops5000 September 3rd, 2004 7:55 AM

Do you know the distance to where it will work? I've heard it can get up to 50 m!

Toothache September 3rd, 2004 8:01 AM

Well, according to Nintendo Official Magazine UK, who tested the Wireless Connector, it's 50 metres, but that's with no obstructions or anything in the way.

Another note, you need at least 2 Pokemon in your party to enter the Union Room.

Marill909 September 3rd, 2004 2:16 PM

Wow this sounds awesome. I have leaf green but when i do go in the union room no one is in there cuz no one in my town has it yet. It sounds cool that you actually got to use it though. I bet its gunna be fun!

Toothache September 4th, 2004 3:32 AM

*wonders who stickied this thread* Nice idea though, whoever you are :-)

Mr Cat Dog September 4th, 2004 11:44 AM

It'll have been Satoshi-kun or something... or maybe someone else... :/

Did you have a chance to play on any of the games, like the Dodrio ball one, or the skipping rope thing with the starter Pokemon? I really want to play those, and hope they'll be in the English one. ^_^

"A Vote for Justice is a Vote for MCD"

Toothache September 4th, 2004 11:49 AM

No, I never got chance to play those, but according to Nintendo Official Magazine UK, they are available, so don't worry.

AdamHays September 4th, 2004 11:59 AM

so you can battle anyone within 50meters of you who has the game.

Marill909 September 4th, 2004 1:44 PM

Yes. 50 meters, that is with no walls or barriers blocking the way. Your best bet is to go in a crouded mall during a nintendo promotional event...hehehe.

Pogiforce-14 September 10th, 2004 1:03 PM

I have Fire red, and the union room looks really awesome. The problem I see with it though, i sthat even if you are in a big group of people, many of them wil be training or fighitng or something instead of checking out the union room, so unless you ask them to go in there, you really won't see much of a crowd. Still, the opportunity to meet like a group sounds very interesting.

Mundane September 11th, 2004 2:25 PM

See, the problem i have is. No one plays pokemon in Juniata. I guess i can go to events, but this is like what, maybe once, twice a year? No one i know owns the game either. So, this union room is a nice thought i think, but i wish there was a online version you could link your gba to. An even better idea than a wireless adaptor.

Splashing Mew September 11th, 2004 7:50 PM

At first glance the union room looks good, but when you delve deeper you will soon notice a big shocker.... You can only battle with pokemon level 30 or lower in the union room....... Yes 30.... It sucks a lot. On the other hand it allows us to size up our opponents before we face them in a direct connect battle (Link cable battles) lvl 30 involves more strategy and you have to choose your pokemon better. Think petite cup in Stadium except double the level. Although I am royal pissed about no lvl 100 or even lvl 50 battles I will live with it.

If you're playing the single player part of the game, and go into a Pokémon Centre to heal your Pokémon, the receptionist will say, "It appears trainerName is playing right now." (replace trainerName with the name of the another player) if someone has their wireless adaptor connected to the game. Since you often go to Pokémon Centers during gameplay, others will be prompted to go to the Union Room.

Toothache September 12th, 2004 5:45 AM

Now that really is a handy feature :-)

ash ketchup dood September 12th, 2004 4:28 PM

umm is there a way to change the kind of trainer you are >_>;;;; like "psychic bill" or are you just sort of stuck with what you get? :O

Toothache September 12th, 2004 4:48 PM

No, that doesn't change, and is determined by your trainer ID number. If you started again on a new game, you'd get a different sprite, but that's about the only way to change it.

Marill909 September 12th, 2004 6:40 PM

I *officially* my wireless adapter with my tested friend. It goes about 30 feet and then the thing starts blinking red. *this is with no barriers* walls, cars, buildings, etc.

Unknown Hero September 12th, 2004 7:42 PM

the actual unit blinks red?

Makoto September 13th, 2004 4:53 AM

okay this is weird because in my little instruction booklet thingy(comes with every game, pokemon or not) for firered it said 10 feet.... how many meters is that? i dunno, but i'm just saying what it is officially....

Toothache September 13th, 2004 4:58 AM

10 feet = just over 3 metres. Not very long at all

Mr Cat Dog September 13th, 2004 9:26 AM

Don't believe what the official booklets say. They only said the Wavebird would last 10 metres but I can get mine at least 20 and playing Mario Kart properly. Many reports have come back saying it goes over 30 and even 40 metres... so it can go a long way away... ^_^

Iyanden September 14th, 2004 1:24 AM

Level 30 and below sort of ticked me off....and only 2v2...much more strategy, much more of a pain. :dead:

Marill909 September 14th, 2004 3:30 PM

Quote:

the actual unit blinks red?
No. the thing when you ar chatting, trading, battling, etc, is what i am talkin about.*its in the upper right of the screen.

Desaparecidos September 14th, 2004 6:51 PM

i'm so excited for the wireless battling, well i was before i heard of level 30 =/

that's kinda cheap by Nintendo. i was looking forward for level 100 battles with friends and such. and just like that my hopes are crushed.

oh and the talk of 50 meters. which is amazing, then to find out only 30 feet. man what a bunch of let downs. i bet i won't get to use it more than twice this year. :(

That's never happened to me, and often me and my sister would be playing right beside each other. :\ Even if it did, most trainers that have played each series of games like me don'te ven bother to read what Nurse Joy is saying anymore. We just go in, push the button about about a dozen times, then leave.

Also, expanding on Splashing Mew's dscription about level 30 or lower, you also can only use two pokemon at a time in a union room battle and you can't enter the union room with less than two pokemon. The plus side is that any battles conducted in the union room don't go on your trainer card, so if you lose it's no biggy. And also, they have a trade board in teh back, which to me will make it easier to find someone willing to trade soemthing you might need or want.

Marill909 September 15th, 2004 3:56 PM

No the way to check if there is someone in the union room is to go to the right of the entrance and click on th screen. It should say how many people are active in the room at that moment.

Desaparecidos September 18th, 2004 10:12 PM

yea i brought my sp to the mall and looked at that screen a few times. it is helpful, so you don't have to enter just to see if someone is in there.

the other night i went to friendly's with a bunch of friends and i saw a kid, maybe like four or five, who had his gameboy and the wireless adapter all set up. and he was playing. so i took mine out and went to the union room, but the moron didn't come. haha i know he was only four, but he obviously knows what the thing does. i was upset i lost my first chance to be able to use it :(

seraphim September 20th, 2004 4:55 PM

the 10 feet is what is garanteed, but you can get a lot more than that in the right conditions. the lvl 30 thing sucks so bad... i wanted to be able to enter with my ultimate team and crush any pathetic newbie with level 20's who thought he was powerful.... now i will have to play on equal fields.... :'( heck, most of the good ones (tyranitar, ho-oh, lugia, charizard, the legendary birds, mewtwo) are impossible to get at that pathetic level...

Desaparecidos September 20th, 2004 6:49 PM

yea exactly. unless you gameshark, which sucks and isn't too much fun. i'll prolly set up a union room team. maybe a Gengar and some other cool ones.

PazzKat September 20th, 2004 10:22 PM

My queztion iz thiz: DOEZ ANYONE HAVE A DIFFERENT SPRITE THEN THE PSYCIC!? I look zo ugly ..... *zobz* All though the level 30 doez zuck, it'z juzt to make it fair if you go into a competition (They better hold an event or I'm rioting) you can't pick off the trainerz who have juzt begun, think of it az a zafe gaurd for noobz! :D My friend and I play it at zchool in a zecluded area, it'z zooooo much fun. Zometimez we mimic the commercial (corny I know) Tee hee. ^^;

corral September 21st, 2004 3:54 PM

yeah the wireless adapters cool but im like the only 1 within the 30 feet i can use it with the game....

You could always use Action Replay to change your normal and secret IDs until you get the results you want. I should probably do some research into what IDs make what trainer sprites in the Union Room.

Desaparecidos September 22nd, 2004 11:54 AM

Has anyone used there wireless adapter against people they just met? I bring mine everywhere in case I see someone with it.

I think I'm going to the Pokemon Center in New York in a couple months, so I hope to see tons of kids with it.

Has anyone ever been to the PC in NY?

I've never been, and I don't know what to expect lol.

elite13kid September 24th, 2004 11:54 AM

how does it work...{the wireless adapater...i havent used mine because my friends dont have the game yet...

Toothache September 24th, 2004 12:08 PM

Same way as a link cable, except there is no cable :-)

Fakey September 24th, 2004 6:18 PM

My friend and I tested it, and it went a good 150-200 feet.

Pichu52 September 25th, 2004 8:08 PM

I haven't found anyone in the union room let alone even with FR/LG, even if I'm out someplace where there should be people playing it. It sucks there isn't many people around that I know of that like pokemon

KaeL September 25th, 2004 8:30 PM

And you live in New York? Wow, try going to the mall or some place public, theres gotta be some one there.

Desaparecidos September 25th, 2004 9:15 PM

my brother and his friend slept over last night and they both had the game. so we played. it was actually pretty fun. you only battle two pokemon, level thirty max, but it was a fun time. my brother was a karate guy, and his friend was a psychic guy who levitated Poke balls. and of course i had to be the dominatrix type guy with a whip :(

salamenceruler04 September 26th, 2004 10:06 AM

Wait, so when you battle in the union room, your pokemon can't be over level 30!!! That stinks!

Desaparecidos September 26th, 2004 7:01 PM

yea you can't battle them if they are over level 30 =/. but i'm not sure if you can't trade them if they are over level 30. i'm pretty sure you can trade if they're over max level.

Pichu52 September 27th, 2004 11:26 AM

I don't live in NEW YORK CITY I live in NY state. Just outside of Buffalo

PazzKat October 2nd, 2004 11:25 PM

Yes, you CAN trade any level, so it doesn't matter, until battle. My ex-friend and I went to the mall, played there, someone saw us, told us there was a guy who worked in JC Penny's and so we went there to play him. I've also gone to the Toy R' Us promo, it was awsome, I got 2nd only to a shiney mewtwo that was 20 levels higher then I.

TheLegendaryBird October 2nd, 2004 11:46 PM

Now stop, so you guys say you cant battle in the union room with some dope leveled pokemons???!!!! Jesus, that stinks!!!!!!!! We should go and punch those nintendo guys!!!

Desaparecidos October 7th, 2004 11:00 PM

yea that was def a bad call by them. it should have been atleast level 50.

but i think they made it that way, so little kids wouldn't get crushed by a mewtwo against their level 27 Wartortle lol

Toothache October 7th, 2004 11:04 PM

L30 battles require a little more skill than L50 or L100 ones, and definately encourage the use of some Pokemon, and restrict others (so, no Zapdos, Mewtwo or whatever).

Desaparecidos October 7th, 2004 11:10 PM

yea it def involves more skill. and probably encourages players to use not so popular Pokemon.

snowball October 9th, 2004 12:47 PM

but you can still battle lvl30+ using the wireless adapter in the direct corner

Dark Trainer Piro October 15th, 2004 8:08 PM

How many people can there be in the Union Room at the same time?

KARR October 24th, 2004 2:50 AM

I can't remember. 40?

Me and my friend went to the Union Room with Pokemon over level 30, and we saw no problem. We chatted, and my friend is a Cool Trainer. Lucky guy. Eh-nyway, beware of my Mewtwo! Yeah.

i agree

Chaos_Hunter October 31st, 2004 6:06 PM

if anyone has gameshark deoxy would be a great choice for the union room :)

WLS_JoKeR November 9th, 2004 5:08 PM

When I got Fire Red I was doubtful becase I was gonna wait for the next generation. Then I saw that there was a wireless adapter and I got it because I thought it could do everyone in my town (which wouldnt be many still) because it said
"Trade, battle, and chat wirelessly! All new wireless adapter comes packed in every game, so trainers can trade, battle, and chat between their FireRed and LeafGreen versions with no cables!"
When it said chat I thought like typeing... but if it's no farther than 10 feet then why don't you just talk normally?

I was hoping to make new friends on pokemon. I thought the wireless adapter would have long range like cell phones do. I mean comes on look at those extremly skinny ones!

WHOS READY TO RIOT?!?!?
(unfortuanatly I don't know anyone, I only have two friends :( WHAH)

Ok i'm calming down i'll let you say what you want.

(starts back up)

And the issue about level pokemon.... I think they should have categories of pokemon. 2-5 battle aka wild pokemon (oh big woop) :P 2-10 aka weak pokemon 2-20 2-30 2- 40 2- 50 ETC! so when trainers battle they have to have some for every ten levels! MUHAHAHAHa then they have to make multiple pokemon to master other people.

Kylie-chan November 26th, 2004 8:25 PM

Like, my brother and I loooooooove the chat. Sarcastic yet true.

Some typical quotes (we fight over it):

Marina (that's me) (not my real name): **** *** ****!
(insert my brother's real name): **** shut up ***!

etc.

Oh, and:

(bro): (smiley) (smiley) (smiley)
Marina: Quit the smilies!
(bro): (smiley)
bro: Battle me.
Marina: No.
bro: battle
Marina: No
bro: battle

*and so forth*
Marina quits chat XD

Also, my brother's Mewtwo crashed my almost-same-level Blastoise :(

I agree with PazzKat. The Psychic is ugly!

I was in Sydney within ranges of many kids, and none were using their Wireless Adaptor but my brother and I! :( ;-;

Firechu December 31st, 2004 6:57 AM

yea when i was in the mall i was waiting in this huge line to get in a store*after holiday madness* and i saw all these younger kids with fire red leaf green. i turned mine on and went into the union room but none of the kids were there.....they must have been mystery giftin' or somethin like that :(

nicscool January 1st, 2005 5:12 PM

Mine can go from one side of the house to another. I love battling my brother and it's a good way to do chatting as well! Although I wish it had online support or was a Wifi adapter!

Aaron5367 January 4th, 2005 2:29 PM

The union room is good and all.... but I cant use it *mad*. I live next to a tralier park that everyone rents at (we dont rent) and they are all to poor to get pokémon FR/LG
Let alone a gameboy!

Thanks,
Aaron

Neon Methodis January 4th, 2005 4:19 PM

I've been to a pokemon tournement up in NY their was a union room spot so i chatted for little then went to slap rookies around but i couldn't stay long because my match was in like 10 minutes so I left but after i was beatin i went back their and made a team of nice pokemon some were level 16 but they had potential.

chaosispower22 February 12th, 2005 1:15 AM

the union room is good for trading, ive done about 20 trades there with my friend, but the fact that you can only battle with 2 pokemon of level 30 or lower really annoys me. Also what annoys me is how virtually useless it is considering the wireless adapter's range. But that annoys me about the DS' chatroom too.

~Amethyst_Callista_Moon~ March 13th, 2005 8:19 PM

Your trainer changes, but only your friends can see what trainer you are?

DARK MIGHTY LATIAS March 19th, 2005 7:44 PM

50 m!? thats alot, but before, I thought something very stupid, I thought it was no more than 3 kilometers!!!...How stupid...but it would be cool if that happened!...but I also thought that it could work behind barriers, but thank u for telling me this...Tho I will search on google to find out if this is true but I do believe u!^_^

I thought that I could reach other ppl to but it can barely reach from one side of my house to the other, which kinda sucks but, there really isnt that many ppl w/ FRLG around me so it really doesnt matter, lol

smithy.boy March 22nd, 2005 12:13 PM

anyone know a website that gives tells you what sprite u get if u have a certain id number

LegendaryPokemonTamer June 14th, 2005 6:11 PM

I've been in the Union room Berry crushing, battling, greeting and chatting and traded sometimes sonow the Union is kinda getting boring to me now.
