Intermediate Class [Aizuke's Home Room]

Welcome to

Aizuke's Home Room for Intermediate Signature Making Class
[Photoshop]

Currently, my style is unsure to me. I tend to change a lot, but usually I stick with textures, smudging and C4D's. But to a more different sort of sense, I try to make my graphics/tags appealing to the viewers eyes. In a way, that's my style. I still consider myself as some sort of a beginner at graphics. Though I have been making graphics for nearly a year now, there is much more for me to learn. My classes of course will help to improve the way you make your graphics, find a significant style for yourself, any weaknesses you think you have when making graphics and much more. I will only be guiding you, not teaching you my style.

Assignments

Assign. #1

Show me what you consider is your worst banner/tag you have made. Tell me what points in your banner/tag you think makes it bad, and what ways you can improve it. After doing so, I will evaluate your banner/tag myself, and say whether I agree with what you've said. Then, using both your own and my opinions; redo your tag taking in hand what you and I have said about it.

You will be given a week and a half to finish this assignment. (To be done by the 28th/29th of January)

--

Assign. #2

This one is pretty easy, all you have to do is make a tag, but you can only use shapes. But! You can only use one sort of shape. If you've picked a circle, then you have to keep using circles. This is just a way to experiment with vectoring and the pen tool. You can use C4D's and textures, only if they match the shape you have chosen. Don't forget to add lighting, depth etc. Then once you've done, you must rate each others banners.

Assignments are due 9th of Febuary~

If you have any problems in completing this assigment by then, feel free to PM me or post in this thread and I will give you an extension. Either than that, you have no excuses to be late.
(Any new students joining after this post will be illegable for an extension)

I already have a question about Assignment #1... *shot'd*
If we do not have a PSD for out worst tag, do we try and remake it or do we choose the worst that we have a PSD for?

Aizuke January 17th, 2009 3:19 AM

Well, since you're redoing your tag, you can remake it, since the PSD's won't be necesscary. If you use the old PSD, you'll just be adding on more layers.

Better to start fresh, but use the same sort of elements you previously had, but improved.

Gunners January 17th, 2009 4:54 AM

Can we show our first ever sig then? lol then re-do it?

Aizuke January 17th, 2009 5:05 AM

If you think that's your worst, sure I guess.

I'll post mine soon. I'll find one that needs a lot of improvement I guess =P

Aizuke January 18th, 2009 2:04 AM

No rush, you have a week and a half to complete it~

And RyuKun, you should go post in the Graphic's School discussions thread to apply for a class. :x

I had some worse tags but I deleted them a long time ago...
-No flow.
-No depth.
-Verging on monotonous.
-Text sticks out like a clown at a funeral.

It can be improved by establishing a line of flow and utilising it. Then we can add some nicer special effects so it isn't so boring and monotonous. I'd play around with gradient maps and colour layers to give it some oomph and look less monotonous. Then I'd blur and sharpen some parts to make some depth before finally putting some 'nice' text on it.

Hot damn, this sucked. First SOTW, for SOTW #1.

  • I remember searching for a background on google, putting it onto GIMP, and slapping the render over. Nawt gud.
  • Really bright, and there's no definite light source. Burns your eyes right out of their sockets.
  • Incredibly monotonous. Took all the natural color away from the render.
  • It really has no flow. The render itself has flow, but the banner detracts it. Flow should be going \\ direction.
  • The ~SOTW~ dangling in the middle of the banner was stupid.
  • I used a border of small font text; I mean, wtf. xD
  • Basically just a render slapped onto a background and splattered with cyan colorize.
  • Scanlines detracted quality.

  • Could do more than just slapping the render on there.
  • Make it less monotone by using greens, reds, purples, etc.
  • Add a light source. Maybe on the top left or at the bottom of her body near her hands.
  • Better background instead of an abstract sampler.
  • Completely redo the text. xD
  • Stick to the natural colors of the render a bit more instead of desaturating it and coating it with cyan.
  • TAKE AWAY THE BORDER. Dx
  • Utilize flow a bit more with c4ds and such.

Yeah, your banner is pretty much flat. Though some of the colours are somewhat visually appealing, it pretty much looks like a render slapped on a background with a bit of smudging? It's sort of empty around the sides and the text, though it make be small, yes it does stick out. Usually if the text sucks it makes the rest of your banner look bad, and since it sticks out a lot, text should be more inconspicuous (spelling? XD;;). A light source coming from where her hand is on her hat would look nice and a bit of sparkle shining on the sword would add a great affect, giving it a good sense of depth. But either than that, you've pretty much pointed out needs to be done.

Evaluation is complete; you may now proceed to redo your banner.

Ahhh, I remember this one. XD; gawd my eyes. Monochrome colours are a no no, especially something that bright. @[email protected]; And the random floating SOTW.. XD; I'd say make the banner smaller or stick the render in the middle, since the left side is waaay too empty. Never cover the colours of the render, usually you use the colours of the render to guide what colours you can make your banner with. Since it's all blue.. It's too blue. Pretty much overkill on the scan lines, use of effects are off the charts, and yet with all those effects, it's still kind of flat. And yeah, text kind of ruins it too. Too much text often ruins it, you want more of the banner than text itself. Nothing else I need to mention for improvement, since you've covered it all.

Evaluation is complete; you may now proceed to redo your banner.

dodgy effects, c4ds and stuff ( one of them makes it look like his arm pit smells)

colour isnt good either

Aizuke January 18th, 2009 6:52 AM

And what you think might improve it?

Gunners January 18th, 2009 7:11 AM

Uh position c4ds better and use better, make sum color so its not just plain and boring lighting too

the bitter end. January 18th, 2009 11:07 AM

I did, but I ended up in Vivaa's class xD

Perhaps I can learn in both? I would love to learn two styles from different people.

Dukey January 18th, 2009 1:20 PM

She's not teaching you styles.

Anyway here we go.
http://i304.photobucket.com/albums/nn184/McDukey/FoB.png
It's got pretty horrible text, no C4D's, smudging, clipping masks.

I suppose, some better text, clipping masks & C4D's might help it, maybe a smudge background as well.

the bitter end. January 18th, 2009 1:28 PM

Yes t w e n t y - t w o, but it would also be better because she's been teaching me up to this point.

I wish I didn't sharpen it that much, but eh. :[ Better?

Aizuke January 19th, 2009 12:38 AM

RyuKun, I would appreciate it if you kept your dicussion in the Graphics School thread, thanks. :x

I was hoping you'd actually say more, since this assignment was to show me what you know about your graphics, and what you know you can improve on. But first, the right side is empty and makes your banner imbalanced. The 2nd line of text is really hard to read, like I said with Kayashi, you don't want to add a lot of text in your banner and cram it all in. A light source would show more depth and a few gradient maps would help bring out the colour. But I don't know, in my person opinion, I would have to say that other graphics I've seen that you've made look a lot more worse. Examples are your pokemon banners, the renders stick out a lot, but with this banner and it's render, it blends in better than those of your pokemon ones. Either than that, like I mentioned lighting would do wonders and perhaps adding something to fill that empty space on the side, or just repositioning the render.

Evaluation is complete; you may now proceed to redo your banner.

Same with you, Dukey, I was expecting more of a evaluation of your piece. But anywho, the render looks blended, but it sticks out like a swore thumb. :[ Not liking the text either, as I've said before, too much text on a banner doesn't look great. Huge text on a banner is the same effect really. Plus the text is barely readable. A light source would be good, all banners probably need a light source, though it has one, but it seems to be eveywhere on the render. The background is too plain and blurry, gradient maps would help to blend the render easily.

Evaluation is complete; you may now proceed to redo your banner.

Yeah, it's too over sharpened. XD; But mosly on the render, if you lowered it down a bit, it would look fine. But it's much better than your first attempt. I guess you skipped on the text this time. It would have been good if you had text to fill up the left hand side. But yeah much better. :3

Kayashi's Grade; A

Since you kinda finished a bit early, I haven't thought of a new assignment, so you'll have to wait a day or so. But feel free to post any graphics you'd like me to rate.
