Sparks' Homeroom for Beginning "Gimpers" *Open*

http://i359.photobucket.com/albums/oo37/lilsparks267/Personal/GimpHomeroom.png

Intro
Hello, and welcome to my Gimp classroom. This is a dictatorship that means I rule
place where you'll learn the basics of gimp having me (the almighty sparks) as your teacher. Being apart of this class means you will complete all assignments to the best of your abilities, and you will respect me as I will hate respect you.

About Me
I am a graphics maker who choose Gimp over PS. I have been making graphics for a while, nothing else to really say. If you want to know my style then its mainly brushwork/smudging/gradients/lighting. I have knowledge of C4D's/Effects but I prefer not to use them, but by all means you go ahead and use them (I will do my best to teach you them).

Students
  • AdvancedK9
  • Knight of Three
  • Kalseng
  • Lady Marie
  • Canon Apocolypse
Assignment Log
  • 1-18: Create a Tag to show me your current level. Due: 1/24 (1 of 4 Completed)
  • Using a partner (that'll i select) create a tag. Step 1 is for both of you to make 1 tag EACH. Step 2 is to give the tag you made to the partner i give you. Step 3 will be to edit your partners tag and hand it in. Partners are AdvancedK9 and Knight of Three; Kalseng and Lady Marie: Due 1/29

Tips

  • Always save a .xcf version of your image along with a .png
Hints
  • Gradient Maps: Foreground color is black/white BG is yellow/purple (preference). Use the gradient map on a desaturated layer, and set it to overlay (Warning it may make your piece seem monotonous).

Class Log
  • Class opened 1/18/09

Kalseng January 18th, 2009 9:54 AM

Ah, yes. I finally found a GIMP class. Here's my sign-up.

Name: Kalseng
Preferred style or work: Signatures/Tags, whatever they're called.
Why do you think you're in your class: I'm having trouble understanding this, but I believe I'm a beginner because I haven't been able to spend much time around GIMP or practice making signatures.
Weak points: Text.
Strengths: Maybe.... Color? -Shrugs-

I'm going to have to wait for noxious to get back online so I can get out of her class.

NerdSparks January 18th, 2009 10:02 AM

I'll put on now, Kalseng great to see someone sign up. Btw if you help contact the others that'd be great, some of them I think had a name change.

Spinor January 18th, 2009 12:55 PM

Finally :D, Time to rock the school.

──────────────────────────────────
Name (Nickname): (alt&452)AdvancedK9(alt&452)

Preferred style or work: I do best in spriting, but I want to learn various other aspects of sprite art

Why do you think your in this class: Because I need something that will do me good and that will kill all my time after school (RL school)

Weak points (in your opinion): Pretty much everything except spriting

Strengths (In your opinion): Spriting XD.
──────────────────────────────────

Also, how should the tag be? What's the theme? Or should it be like mixed?

NerdSparks January 18th, 2009 1:00 PM

The tag is anything you want, just show me what you got.

Well.

I have a basic one I made about 2 days ago.

But it's not really too much editing, just a little text edit.

Here is the attachment

I can make something else by the end of the day.

NerdSparks January 18th, 2009 1:22 PM

Interesting tag, assuming you used a spriting method to remake the letter its interesting. The letters are somewhat sloppy, I can almost make out the original word.

Spinor January 18th, 2009 1:26 PM

I rearranged and fixed some letters

The ones I had to edit were T and R. The T was a simple re-arrangement of F from Buffalo. But the R I had to enlarge and edit from "Grill". Which is why it ended up kinda "Mispositioned".

Star★Seeker January 18th, 2009 1:28 PM

Finally, a GIMP homeroom.

My signup form:

Name (Nickname): Paramour
Preferred style or work: Tags/Banners
Why do you think your in this class: Beacuse I wish to learn more about graphic desings and the like
Weak points : Gradients, flow
Strengths : I really don't know, I guess I'm pretty have mediocre-medium skills.

I have a question: How do you do gradient maps on GIMP?

NerdSparks January 18th, 2009 1:35 PM

Great to see another sign up.

I hope you all get to work on Assignment #1

As for gradient maps:
Colors->Map->Gradient Map

Your foreground color should be black/white (for better effect) background should be yellow/purple(my preference) set to overlay. If you want to know how to apply it:

1. Copy Visible then paste on new layer.
2. Desaturate that layer
3. Apply the gradient map
4. Set to overlay/multiply/addition(?) mess with the opacity if you must

Lady Marie January 18th, 2009 1:39 PM

I signed up for the class.

Name (Nickname): Lady Marie
Preferred style or work:Signigtures, Avatars and small wallpapers
Why do you think your in this class: I still can't understand the Class
Weak points (in your opinion):Text mostly.
Strengths (In your opinion):Blending pics together.

NerdSparks January 18th, 2009 1:42 PM

I believe you were the last of the 4. I welcome you to my class, and I hope you have something to show me as your first assignment.

Here it is my tag! It kinda sucks though.

NerdSparks January 18th, 2009 2:07 PM

Another interesting one its very nice, a little too much pink but very nice.

Star★Seeker January 18th, 2009 2:17 PM

Does it matter if I made my tag following a tutorial?

NerdSparks January 18th, 2009 2:17 PM

I'd prefer the tag to be freestyle

Spinor January 18th, 2009 2:30 PM

Ok, I decided to make another one that involves many more tools.

It's not that good. Just a little 1.5 hour project.

Here it is attached:

Kalseng January 18th, 2009 2:34 PM

How big is it supposed to be? Mine is gonna be about 395x125-ish.

NerdSparks January 18th, 2009 2:44 PM

Under 600x200 is preferred, but its your choice.

AdvancedK9 the text is unsettling and it messes up the focal a bit since its a confusing pattern

Lady Marie January 18th, 2009 5:05 PM

I'll try to break the habit of using pink when I do the tag, like I did with my Avatar.

NerdSparks January 18th, 2009 5:47 PM

This is what I'm here for guys. My goal is to make all of you better graphic designers, and to do that I must first find out your bad qualities.

Sorry to worry you,but here is another siggy I made. This is my last one until another assignment comes.

And Thanks for the Advice about saving it in PNG instead of JPEG. It comes a lot clearer!

NerdSparks January 19th, 2009 9:02 AM

Very nice, but for a sig like that a little more color is needed. Try using May's orange and green to mix it up.

The next assignment will come as soon as Kalseng and Knight of Three hand in something, or the due date expires.

The Dark Knight January 20th, 2009 12:56 PM

I'd love to join!

Name: GanonApocalypse
Preferred style or work: Grunge sigs & avatars.
Why do you think your in this class: I know the basic stuff, but I'd like to get better.
Weak points: I don't know many effects & tips, stuff like that.
Strengths: Good with brushes & colour schemes.

An example of what I can do:

moments. January 20th, 2009 1:01 PM

LilSparks, just reminding you that all registers by members must be made in the main Graphics School Thread. So you might want to remove the sign up part from your first post...

GanonApocalyspe, I will be happy to add you to this class, but please make a post in the link I made above to the actual school.

NerdSparks January 21st, 2009 8:20 AM

My mistake, I'll hope everyone here will sign up in the main post if you haven't already

My banner, I love Paramore so I'd figure I should make a banner of them.

NerdSparks January 21st, 2009 1:33 PM

I like it, but you have two many effects over the face (along with a fog). That'll be something for you to work on (I'm making a list for everyone)

NerdSparks January 23rd, 2009 12:54 PM

New assignment is up, ask me if you have any questions on what to do.

Spinor January 23rd, 2009 5:43 PM

Question if you don't mind.

Should we hand each other an image file or .xcf?

NerdSparks January 23rd, 2009 5:48 PM

Depends on how you want to do it. If you think the .XCF file will help go ahead. I believe you'd have to use rapidshare/megaupload though. You only NEED to give them an image of what you made (the .png).

Kalseng January 24th, 2009 11:40 AM

ASDLFKJGIJ

I'm sorry for missing the deadline. I'll do something for this assignment, though.

I swear.

NerdSparks January 27th, 2009 5:35 PM

Come on I'm still waiting on those entries.

Here is what I managed to do since GIMP keeps acting up on me. An avatar sadly. I will do a siggie if GIMP does'nt crash on me. I hate that I have a good siggie and then GIMP stops working. And I lose it.

NerdSparks January 30th, 2009 6:01 PM

That's nice, but we really need to get started on assignment two I'll give it another week

Lady Marie January 31st, 2009 2:13 PM

Okay, here's my assinment. I did try to use less pink but i am too scared to use other colors in fear that it may clash. Unforntanly the render i had was too blurry to erase correctly.

NerdSparks January 31st, 2009 6:35 PM

Did your partner also do his part?
