What background programs do you run?

As the title states, what programs and processes do you commonly run in the background constantly.

For me:
Creative Sound Blaster Audigy SE Surround Mixer
Grisoft AVG AntiVirus Free
Zone Alarm Firewall Free
Spybot: Search and Destroy
Windows Sidebar (Generic)
Stardock ObjectDock
mIRC
The Weather Channel Desktop 6
Pidgin
Skype
Wakoopa Tracker

right now all I have are:
iStat Menus: for getting temps, cpu and RAM load, and and expanded time format info
Bowtie: neat little itunes controller and blends well with my background
Little Snitch: Secondary firewall that regulates both incoming and outgoing network packets. (helps to stop unwanted programs from contacting any server anywhere)
Growl: systemwide notification system
Silk: changes system font to a more easily readable font

iTunes: Music!
Finder: to find things
Spotlight: to find specific things and get quick answers to math problems

The following programs are always running in the background
  • avast! (Anti-virus)
  • Spybot S&D Resident protection (blocks registry changes and uses a blacklist of known infected programs)
  • Start++ (CLI extension, extends start menu/address bar functionality.)
  • Bandwidth Monitor
  • Vista Sidebar (Weather Gadget)
  • ProcessQuicklink2 (Helps determine the purpose of any running process, dead useful when checking to see what some new process is for.)
  • Windows Live Messenger 9.0 RTM with MsgPlus!
  • Sizer (Helps size windows to preset sizes and reports window size in pixels when hovering over bottom right corner)
I dont have a lot of crap on this machine, Everything non-essential listed above ends up being terminated if the computer starts acting up, followed up by a spyware and then a virus scan. Though to be honest, this machine doesn't act up often. Naturally I'm also usually running Firefox 3 and mIRC 6.25 but those are considered foreground processes. (first two programs I exit out of when troubleshooting) :P

  • Google Talk
  • Wakoopa
  • Windows Live Messenger

Other ones that I run sometimes in the background are:
  • Skype
  • uTorrent

That's about it. =\
