How much is your computer plugged in and what is your battery life

Obviously this is referring to notebooks.

How much do you plug your computer in?
How often will you unplug it?
How long is your battery life?
Do you ever unplug your Notebook?

My Macbook Pro is constantly plugged in and when it is unplugged I will get a good 3 or 4 hours with maximum brightness. I only unplug it if it is absolutely necessary. And this darn cable it too short to work with. The other one was so long i could have it plugged in across the room but this one is way too short so I have to use an Extension cord to use it outside of my desk.

I've decided that whenever I'm at home, I'm keeping my notebook plugged in so that I can hopefully maintain the battery for a lot longer than a couple of years use. And it's not really inconvenient as I don't have Wi-fi in the house, I'm always stuck to the Ethernet cable when I want to be online. I only unplug it when I want to use it in my room or take it around with me. The battery life is around 3 hours maximum I believe, on the battery saving option but only 2.5 hours when it's on High Performance with maximum brightness.

4h 15min on power saver with Vista.

If I have it on XP with minimum brightness, I can get up to 6.5 - 7 hours battery life :O

FYI, its a Dell Latitude D430 with a big 'extra longlife' battery. Unfortunately, the battery also sticks out from the main laptop body cause its extra bulky. :P

Dell Latitude (forgot rest)
1 and 1/2 hours

- About 22/7.
- Not too often, considering how short the battery life is.
- Since the countdown timer is never very accurate, I'd have to guess and say one and a half to two hours.
- Only when I really need to. It's just a hub for dedicated game servers, so it sits and vigilantly runs the server all day.

How much do you plug your computer in?
It's in 24/7/365.
How often will you unplug it?
Nevar.
How long is your battery life?
The internal mechanism that charges the battery is broken. Charged however, it'll last about an hour (though I played Halo in a minibus once and only got five minutes xD).
Do you ever unplug your Notebook?
Not since it never has to be moved... but, isn't this question effectively the same as the second?

my Laptop has "almost" never been unplugged and its life is 30 min since i have it on high performance and since its plugged in all the time i dont have to worry about it dieing.

How much do you plug your computer in?
well, usually I have it plugged in all night then use the battery until it needs charged to plug it in again.

How often will you unplug it?
whenever I can.

How long is your battery life?
I usually get around 4-5 hours on a single charge, that decreases down to 1.5-2 hours if I happen to be using Leopard and Win7 at the same time.

Do you ever unplug your Notebook?
Yes, every chance I get that it's fully charged I unplug it. this gets the battery into the habit of holding the longest charge possible.

Wow everybody's is pretty bad compared to me and yours Gerri.

I once heard somewhere that 40% was the sweet spot. I think I heard this from Chris Pirillo.

My Acer Aspire is in almost always, its battery lasts about 2 hours on High Performance. I don't mind, really. It's only ever unplugged when I am too lazy to plug it in.

That's the same as mine, but it doesn't really matter because my cable is always plugged in.

Ben Kenobi January 28th, 2009 12:21 PM

I have mine plugged in all the time when using it. Very rarely use it unplugged. Battery life on the default power plan is about 3 1/2 hours.

How much do you plug your computer in?

All the time especially when I'm on.

How often will you unplug it?

When my mom wants to use it.

How long is your battery life?

Balanced: 2 - 3 hours

Power Saver: 4 - 5 hours

High Performance: 40 - 50 minutes

Do you ever unplug your Notebook?

When I'm on no. My mom yes.

Don't iTroll. There's enough of that on Engadget. I'm supprised you're still at it to be honest, considering last time.

Anyhow, I get about 3 hours, mid brightness on my Dell XPS m1330. Not brilliant, but that's what you have to pay for the small form factor, you also get small batteries. But hey, it's enough for me. It lasts double lessons just fine (In which I take notes on it) and lasts my daily bus journeys (Where the 3D accelerator's normally engaged in some capacity) just fine.

Otherwise, the laptop's plugged in about 4-6 hours a day in school time, which is enough to keep it charged up.

I think Mac people always tend to get more out of their batteries 'cos they're not using the 3D accelerator much at all, which is what really hammers the battery life.

Well actually though i am not being a fanboy for once. I have seen PC Laptops which have beaten Macbooks in battery life. I believe that the Thinkpads they are making now are getting 7-10 hours new. Everybody just happens to have lower battery than we do.

And for Mac users we are experiencing 3D stuff too. The dock and the Cover Flow thing are 3d graphics and much of the software I use such as After Effects and Premiere Pro are intensive which will drop me down to about 2.5 hour battery.

Fair enough if you say so, but you always find a way to imply the supperiority of the half-eaten Apple.

As for the dock and Cover Flow, that's no more intensive than Aero is, which I suppose is engaging the 3D features of the GPU, but to a relatively minor extent. I'm talking more along the lines of COD2, Doom 3 or Project 64.

As for the 2.5 hour intensive battery use, you should of mentioned that. =p Not doing so is just cheeky. On a slightly off topic note, what is mac users compulsion to edit video? Is it just because that's what macs are advertised at being good at? It seems that everyone I know who has one edits together a video on one just because they can, and probably wouldn't if they didn't have a mac. [/Off topic]

Well to be honest I am using the same software and stuff on the mac for editing. Adobe Premiere Pro. But I am however using iMovie instead of Windows Movie Maker to shrink down the video for youtube requirements. And I believe now OS X is more efficient on the battery because running windows in boot camp is only a couple hours and vista is less than that.

Perhaps. Maybe OSX uses a tickless kernel and Windows does not? I understand this is how Linux improves battery life, but I'm not sure that either of these OSes do. If OSX does, that could explain it's improved battey life. I'm probably getting a little technical here, sorry for sliding offtopic.

I haven't honestly been able to measure the battery life of my notebook, but it seems to be about 3.5 - 4 hrs. Suprisingly, I still get approx. 2 hrs with heavy usage. Using sound seems to drain the battery more than anything else.
