Should Recess be part of a kid's school schedule?

I say yes. The reason is because it gives kids a chance to run around and get their excersice. Plus, it's good for them to interact with other children and make friends, you know?

I remember my recess. :'D It was my only favorite subject as a kid and kids love having free time to run around. :B

I thought recess is already part of the kid's school schedule. The staff(of every school, I guess), always consider having the kids some playtime as one part of their healthy development.

the bitter end. January 27th, 2009 7:22 AM

Yes, you do need to learn the important subjects they teach, but you also need social development, as well as a break from the often stressing day.

Soul Eater January 27th, 2009 7:23 AM

Well, I've just noticed how serious they are being over recess and making people understand it's for kids to exercise and stuff, you know? XD

Not only do they need a break but for younger kids, exercise is VERY important. It can build their small bodies and let them do things when they get older. I think they should have something for older kids, you know, make PE more important because PE is also good for growing bodies. D:

I only needed two years of PE. I sucked at PE but I still got my exercise. Most kids that reach middle school, don't get the proper exercise as they reach adulthood. It gets to the point where you see this older kids becoming more lazy. D:

♣Gawain♣ January 27th, 2009 7:25 AM

It's maybe because of their parents, who nowadays focused on having their child top grades and not leaning unto exercises and stuff. They think they're unimportant.

People intimidates children you know...

Soul Eater January 27th, 2009 7:36 AM

Oh, that is so true. Children at young ages usually do what their parents think is best. Parents usually find it hard to understand that recess is important too. D:

Melody January 27th, 2009 7:40 AM

yeah..Parents get so worked up over academics that they dont stress how important it is to exercise too...

Ceilidh January 27th, 2009 7:42 AM

Of course, it'll give them a chance to exercise and socialise. You can't really learn social skills in a classroom.

Rioku_Zanketa January 27th, 2009 9:09 AM

You can if you're a bad boy. like me. Ahhh,..the good 'ol grand days. XD

anywho, yes, i think it is important. Its only practice for real-life situations. That's like training tiger/lion cubs to not play with each other. If they don't do that, then odds are they're going to be crappy hunters. (They even wrestle with their mother if they're an only child.)

xgmx January 27th, 2009 9:13 AM

Yes, it gives the little kiddies exercises (and lets them know that if you do good in real life, you get good rewards).

Haza January 27th, 2009 10:12 AM

When I had recess the girls and I just sat around and gossiped and it was really the source of all elementary drama a=so no it shouldnt. Its just dirty anyway.

Legobricks January 27th, 2009 12:00 PM

Academic success makes a practical failure.
I believe most of children's time should be spent playing, and really, not on a school's pavement but in a field or wood... but the law of many countries say otherwise.

레트로 January 27th, 2009 12:10 PM

We had recess, but it wasn't much fun, we basically stood in a big driveway. D:
I liked it much better on rainy days when we just stayed in the cafe and played cards and whatnot. :"D

Artemis January 27th, 2009 12:33 PM

I say YEs...100% yes, it gives kids time off from sitting down the entire time, and it also is kinda like a learning skill because it deals with communication, action, and coorporation...plus for all those who like running around playing it is good excercise too!

matt561 January 27th, 2009 12:43 PM

The fact is recess is nececary to stimulate a childs mind i other ways than sitting down at a desk filling in math tests

HoneyBubbles January 27th, 2009 5:35 PM

Definatly. Sure, kids gossip and pick on eachother during recess, but stopping recess won't stop bullying. And a lot of kids just use that time to play.
Besides, a lot of kids have plently of stuff going on afterschool. They need some free time everyday, and if they don't get it at school they may not get it at home. Im not sure if this is the case everywhere, but it was true at my school.

SegaSaturnGal January 27th, 2009 6:32 PM

Sure! All I have is a break after lunch...

This is my 100th post...WAHOO!

Tanooki January 27th, 2009 9:10 PM

I haven't had recess in over four years. I feel nostalgic just thinking about it. =P

>Feelings< January 27th, 2009 10:42 PM

Of course recess should be made a part of everyday schooling. In fact, this is more important for the better growth for children.

The school, I think, should have a big green field solely for the purpose of recess, rather than the paved-out, small playgrounds commonly seen these days. Social abilities and activities, physical condition, creativity, and a lot of other traits are only born through this process only, not in the classroom.

In fact, I think as much as recess is important, gym should also be made compulsory. Studying will always be there...

That's very vague. You should elaborate or just avoid generalizing such things.

I say a child can perfectly spend large amounts on both. After all, a very fast pathway to true failure is lack of formation.

I really hope you're saying this out of hard feelings to your own childhood schools, and not of extreme naiveté.

I agree with this.

There's no recess in my school. Education is serious business.

I agree, play when you're a kid and learn when you're older. Playing in the woods and what not will be good physically and mentally. What sorta kid doesn't like building cubbies? ._.
Besides, most kids aren't mature enough to learn (Like me)

I agree with this.

I also agree with this.

Meh, in truth, no on except hyper little elementary-school kids need recess. It does give you exercise (something my mom values over my academics: sometimes she makes me skip my homework to exercise!), but if you don't WANT to play, you just don't... So, only the jocks get play, really. Besides, shouldn't PE be good enough for most people? We get to play dodgeball, so I have no complaints...

Gulpin January 28th, 2009 3:49 PM

Well, for itty bitty kiddies, they need recess, mainly so the teachers don't have to deal with rampaging kids with all of the energy in the world. But for older kids, we don't really need a recess because we can controll ourselves better and be able to sit in a chair all day without going crazy.

Yrie January 28th, 2009 4:31 PM

I'm so sad we don't have recess anymore. But yes, I think its an important part of the school day. It allows kids to get rid of some extra energy, helping them to focus better when they return to the classroom, which should be a good enough argument for anyone considering removing recess from the schedule, and besides that, its a time for friends, which is nice.
