WTF is a "Bad Image"
I was on the computer, plugged in my flash drive, then all of a sudden, my computer asks,
"Do you want to allow .EXE files" I clicked allow, then my computer mysteriously restarted. When it loaded, it kept telling me so and so.Exe was a Bad Image. Could someone explain? |
This means that the data in the .exe file is probably corrupted. Are you sure you managed to completely copy the file to the flash drive? I've made that mistake a few times before.
Another possibility is that the file could be a virus. There are quite a few which exhibit behavior like that. Make sure your computer is clean by doing a virus scan. If not, then it's very likely that you won't be able to open it and you will need to delete it. Corrupted data is a waste of space. |
we're gonna need to know what the exe was

It still sounds like a virus, so I would still do a virus scan to be sure.
If nothing pops up you may have to uninstall and re-install those programs. (MSpaint could be a hard one so I would ask a friend who has a working version, on the same OS as you, to copy the file from their windows folder on their computer for you.) |
Hmm, that sounds like my best bet. But how do I reinstall Firefox *AKA my browser* if I already have it? *How can I get it before I delete it?*
|
Just download it and install it in the same directory it originally was in, saying "yes to all" at the overwrite prompt.
Best export your favourites and whatever else you can though, or you'll lose those, but as I'm not a Firefox user, I can't tell you how to do that. |

Go to "Bookmarks>Organize Bookmarks" or hit CTRL+SHIFT+B while in Firefox. From there, hit "Import and Backup" at the top of the new window and click on "Backup." Here, you will be prompted to save your bookmarks. Name it and save it wherever you want. After the new install, go back to the Bookmarks Library and click on "Import and Backup" again. This time, move your cursor over "Restore" and click on "Choose File." Load the bookmarks file you saved. There we go, bookmarks saved. Hope everything goes well for you. |
And then delete the old *apparently infected* Firefox, MS Paint, etc.?
|
Yep, just make sure you can get new working copies before you delete them.
*smacks forehead* Oh jeez... I forgot that there is a much simpler way of doing this. You can also use the system restore utility and set your computer back to a period of time where the corruption never existed. That won't always fix the problem though, but it's worth a shot and it wouldn't harm anything as long as you back up your important documents (school reports, semester papers in-progress, etc.). Start>All Programs>Accessories>System Tools>System Restore. The rest should be self-explanatory. |
What if all o a sudden, things are being infected with Trojan software? Cause they are...
Edit: Nevermind. Capt. Couch, you have saved my computer! If I wasn't gay/this wasn't over the internet, I'd try to hug you. This can be locked or something now. |
