Thoughts on usernames?
Thought I should make a thread about this as it is something that I think about a bit.
What usernames do you think are good? What makes a good username? What makes a bad username? I don't like in forums where there are a lot of members that take a common name and other users add a number to that name for their own, such as pokemaster and pokemaster69. I also find usernames without Capitals to not look so good. |
Any user name is a good one in it's own way :D
[/cheesy] I find particular interest in user names with .'s It's like adding a small dot that says "Hey! My name wasn't cool enough by itself, so it's followed by a period! I WIN D:<" I had a faze where I always put a specific sequence of numerals in my name, but I grew out of that. :D I dislike numbered names now, for some reason. I tend to dislike non-capital user names also. :/ EDIT: Viewing this thread: .Sublime, jigglypuff8 ....>_> |
I think it's stupid when people use "fancy" usernames like [/~.:The-Saviour:.~\], it's just too.. ~*~*~*~*. Or usernames like MUNCHLAX ROXX and those that are actually a sentence, these tend to roam around PC. Simple usernames are always the best. xD
|
I pretty much always use one-word usernames made up of words/names that I either find interesting or make up myself. I've found that I don't like numbers, underscores, or pretty much any sort of symbol, besides simple stuff like periods.
|
I think usernames that are sentences are different, unique and fun but using underscrolls or dashes instead of spaces kills it.
I don't think symbols are bad. |
What makes a good username? Originality, uniqueness
What makes a bad username? Numbers following, unoriginality, overuse of ~ and related symbols, overused words that people seem to think are original such as twilight I don't care about capitalisation unless it looks good. An example of one that looks good with a lower case is euphoricFUTURE. =) Those are all my standards really. |

...Everyone hates my username :D |
I like original usernames. Mine is not, but most of the people I know like this name more than my others... >.>
I dislike numbers in usernames. And usernames should be capitalized in my opinion... |

I meant no actuall hate toward you, and I apologize if it came off as such. To get back on topic, I also dislike those crazy usernames that have so many different characters. |~[.::I'm_So_Cool::.]~| No, no your not. A few crazy characters are fine, but more than four and it gets ugly, in my opinion. (If anybody actually has that username here, I apologize in advance :x) |
I love witty usernames, not too picky about them in general. For me, they either stand out positively, or I don't even give enough care to remember them until I need to refer to them. As for what I like to make, I often chose RP character names.
A great example is the name I have now, Rioku Zanketa. He is my first ever rp character, and when I grow up,....or I guess later in life,...I might make a novel/video game/something in which he will be a character in. Also, my Gamertag is of a character's nickname in an RP made in another forum; the nickname of my last username, in fact. |
Addin' stuff.
Since I lack originality, most of my usernames come from places. Usually names of episodes from TV shows. ._. Anyway, names that are extremely, painfully obvious references like "Kingdom Hearts Sora" (I've seen that somewhere >.<) make me want to punch something. Yes... I understand I'm being a hypocrite... |
It is more important that you like your own username yourself.
You can make yours look good. . usernames FTW Changing usernames is definitely a new trend here in PC. |
What usernames do you think are good?
Mine. What makes a good username? The following combination of letters: rikanai Best if followed by a point. I also like distinct usernames. I don't have anything against numbers either. I think a username is good as long as its original.. What makes a bad username? I don't like aLtErNaTiNg cases like that, and ,~*:;:overly-excessive:;:*~, frills like this. NAMES THAT ARE FULLY IN CAPS aren't stylish, either. And jigglyppuff8, I like your username. It reminds me of a good friend I had. |
I like original well thought out names.
But I hate name with the little characters in it, it just ruins the purpose of it being a user NAME. |
What usernames do you think are good?
Most seem reasonable once explained. What makes a good username? No punctuation or other such miscellaneous typographic characters. No sentence names as seems to be the trend here right now. What makes a bad username? Bad people. ZING! While I won't demand the level of originality my name* comes with, calling yourself something like Pikachu, especially on a Pokemon forum, is very uninspiring. *Before you challenge me on this point, ask yourself how many people you know who are named after battles. |
The username is ok as long as the person is ok.
But I will say I prefer to see names that don't include a pretentious amount of punctuation marks or numbers. One number in a name doesn't bother me though. |
Adding Super Duper Special Pretty Symbols do ruin the point of a username, in my opinion. I don't mind a simple username (i.e, Aether) or something that's medium-length but so awesome it totally makes up for it (i.e, The Unchosen One).
|
To me only the real person behind the username matters, not the username itself.
And even in terms of usernames, there is no one definition of good username - the liking of it varies from person to person. |
I dont like usernames that have numbers in them at all especially those ones that are like (something)54345....ive seen it and its horrible and ones with capitals blaugh!
|
A bad username has more than 3 numbers. I don't like * as well. For some reason I don't like the . if it is not part of ... (no more than three and no less either). A good username is one that is kind to my eyes (ie can be read out loud).
However, I don't care much about usernames. People change them often anyway for reasons I don't know/understand. Personality meant much, much more to me. Seems like my username wasn't bashed yet despite fitting people's hate list of usenames. Oh well. It's hard to type 乚☆丁工回己❀ anyway. For some reason it isn't 100% bold too. |
I personally feel that a good username comes from your heart. It should be something which, in one word or phrase, sums your self-image up. Therefore I find the use of random numbers (the numbers in the range of 1970-20xx, where xx is the final two digits of the current year, is acceptable) to be nothing short of sloppy and well...not very well thought out. Though I do admit, using a year at the end of your username is fine (since a given year can hold special meaning to a person)
Another thing that gets me is excessive usage of symbols. Rather than converting any of the letters to a look alike unicode equivalent so you can have a name which is already taken is nothing short of rude and well...it shows lack of will to innovate, which is kinda important if you ask me. Finally, using common sense, Don't load your username full of characters you cant easily type on your preferred keyboard layout. So if you have a US qwerty keyboard...stick with what you see on that please, dont bother trying to hax in your unicode crap with alt+<key value, typed on the number pad> |
I like original names, particularly pretty or clever ones mashed from multiple words or that just look/sound cool that define who you are.
I don't mind the length, but I hate names with numbers or those frilly decorative symbols in it (~*~). I also really hate names of overrated characters followed by numbers or something like 'boy', 'girl', 'fan', 'lover', etc. |
Actually, I have a special program to type Asian characters out (usually to do my homework). The first, third, fourth, fifth and sixth character in my username are Asian characters, to be more precise, Chinese characters. It's not hard for me to log even if I have to log in manually. Copy and paste.

It takes cool people to have cool usernames, thus why I am now 'the triangle'.
Any usernames with 'emo', 'demon', 'ash', 'pikachu', 'dude', or 'is' in them can go right away. They all fail. I also am VERY impartial towards underscores...tildes, on the other hand, are cool. EDIT: I'm not really one to talk about usernames with characters that aren't letters or numbers, but Asian character-filled usernames are annoying...mainly because they usually can't be read or are nonsensical.[/inspiredbypostabove] |
What usernames do you think are good?
Any names that do not sound nooby. Like "pokemonpkmn12345", "Pokemon Master", "grandadvanceshipper" Oh god, I feel hypocritic. What makes a good username? A mixture of words that sound cool, or a random word you stuck out of the blue that has a nice ring to it. Like mine. What makes a bad username? Improper use of numbers (unlike mine), overuse of lowercase, over use of UPPERCASE, and words so common and annoying, they make the member look like a 9 nine-year old. BTW, my username is not only awesome because of the ring, but because everyone keeps confusing the Non-keyboard double dashes for a keyboard dash XD. |
