Missed Opportunities?

Are there any gaming experiences you feel you missed out on? Be it a game you regret not buying or system you ignore or maybe an entire generation you just completely bypassed. What do you wish you had the chance to play today?

---

I was very young when I had a NES. I got my SuperNES when I was three. So, clearly I missed out on a lot of classic 8-bit goodness. I had Tetris, Super Mario Bros., Duck Hunt, Blades of Steel, and Sesame Street ABC/123. That's it. So many classic titles I missed out on.

Although, I'm sure they would've proved too difficult for me back when I was two and three years old XD But, I wish I had them around to play now.

Same thing with the SuperNES. I was young, I couldn't really follow gaming. There are so many games that I know about now that I had no idea existed at the time. Most of all I wish had Super Mario RPG. I haven't played it. Everyone I know who has played it absolutely loves it. I will be picking this up on the Virtual Console soon ^_^

I think I did fairly well with the N64. I wish I had my own copy of GoldenEye 007. I would borrow my uncle's copy for extended amounts of time. I loved it. It was so much fun and multiplayer was so addictive. My mom didn't like that it was a shooting game, but I was allowed to play it - just not buy it :\

On the GCN I wish I had Beyond Good & Evil, Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time, and Viewtiful Joe. BG&E I didn't really know anything about. I just heard good things about it. And now a sequel is headed to the 360. So, I'm hoping the original is released as an "Xbox Original" for download. I really don't have any excuses for the other two games XD Just laziness.

Well sweetie, as a lower-middle class game collector, I missed out on quite a few games myself.

I'm nothing but an opened-minded optimistic Nintendo fan boy. However it doesn't mean I don't like the other consoles, it's just Nintendo consoles were the ones I preferred and could afford at the time.

Well the only games I missed out for any Nintendo system were for GCN, mostly Ubisoft games like Beyond Good & Evil.

I missed out on the vast amounts of shooters and platformers on the TG16.

I have a Genesis and Dreamcast, yet I missed out on plenty of classics, like Shenmue and Vectorman.

More recently I got a PS2, so y'all know what I missed out on. XD I got it so late is because I didn't have enough money.

I stopped caring about Final Fantasy when Square became full of themselves. I only played 1-6.

And finally sweeties, I missed out on some of the Half-life expansion packs. I'm thinking about getting the collector's edition to get all the expansion packs. ^^ It may cost a little more compared to just simply buying them through Steam, but I want the box. XD

NES/SNES. XD I was born when they were pretty much the big thing, and my first console was the N64, and I even missed out on that, not having played OoT or even Majora's Mask, so yeah.

Oh dear, you did miss out! :o
Lovely little RPG, I had it on the Xbox.

My brother used to pirate most games for me, so I never really missed out with my earlier consoles as the money from the more expensive PS1 game would then go to games for other systems. :D

I never owned an N64 but I'd play it at a friends house, forcing him to buy games that looked good or I'd heard about every now and then. xD
(Saving money there too. xD)

I don't feel like I missed out on any lately, but chances are I'll realise something later on which I can't see right now. :x

My neighbour had a Genesis so I would play his console. Again though, I had no idea what was available and what was not. And I'm still not sure what I missed out on. XD But I played Sonic 2, Sonic 3 & Knuckles, Echo the Dolphin, Vectorman, Bart's Nightmare, Bart VS. the Space Mutants, and Jurassic Park.

I also managed to expand my NES library slightly beyond that tiny amount I mentioned. Neighbours are handy XD I borrow Super Mario Bros. 3 and the original LoZ (thus starting my addiction) from one neighbour and various Ninja Turtles games from another.

The only vintage Video Game systems I had growing up were the SNES, the N64, and the Gameboy Color. The only games I played on the SNES was SMB-All Stars and Street Fighter 2... When I was 6 and had absolutely no clue. The only other games I played were all the Pokemon console games (excluding Stadium JP and Puzzle League), all the Pokemon main series games, Mario Kart 64, Smash Bros, and Super Mario Land 2: 6 Golden Coins. I've also had the unfortunate experience of playing...*gulp*... Superman 64... I also missed out on the Gamecube but from what I hear, I'm not missing much... EXCEPT FOR MELEE!!! *cries*

I would really like to play a Legend of Zelda N64 adventure, Final Fantasy traditional RPG, Starfox, non-FPS Metroid, a Metal Gear game, a pre-genesis Sonic game, and maybe even a Resident Evil game. If only the Wii wasn't such a family friendly console that everyone and their Grandma wanted to play it (literally), maybe then I could actually be motivated to VC them.

I definitely feel as I've missed out on many gaming opportunities since I got into gaming a little too late. I've never become interested in Mario, Zelda, Metroid etc. because of it. Sure I have access to all of them whether it's through an emulator or a remake but it just doesn't feel right playing a game from a different phase in gaming history.

A lot of the games I missed out on are ones that it doesn't look like I'll get a second chance on, like Earthbound, which I never knew about as a kid, or Conker's Bad Fur Day, which I was too young and prudish for at the time.

Ark Kuvis February 6th, 2009 12:46 PM

Jet Force Gemini ;_;

As well as the Prince of Persia Trilogy, Halo 1, Metal Gears 2 and 3...heck, I only got into Street Fighter just last year with HD Remix.

Immortal_one February 6th, 2009 12:59 PM

Honestly, I wish I would have gotten a PS2. I missed a lot of the signature games of the system, like FF X, FF X-2, Kingdom Hearts, Tekken saga, and plenty other games. I did however get to enjoy MGS 2 and MGS 3 on the PS2 by borrowing it from my friends :D

s0nido February 6th, 2009 10:42 PM

I wish I didn't buy the PS2 a month before the Wii came out. I could've waited a month and gotten the Wii, but I couldn't wait.

The Hero Without a Name February 6th, 2009 10:57 PM

I missed out on Super Smash Bros 64, though I got to play it at my friend's house. I remember my damage was much higher than his, and I was like, "I have a higher percentage, I'm winning!" xD

Akeraz February 7th, 2009 1:02 AM

I missed out on the Nintendo 64 and the Nintendo Gamecube, because my mum always kept saying to me "You already have too many consoles"

So I missed out on titles like SSBM and Pokémon Stadium..

Superjub February 7th, 2009 3:19 AM

I have owned every nintendo console to date (with the exception of the Gameboy Micro) so I dont think i missed anything there. I've played most of Nintendo's big games like LOZ (Except I didn't play the second one :O) and most Mario games. However, I have only played 3 Final Fantasy games (Final Fantasy 3 remake for DS, Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicals for GC and Final Fantasy My Life As A King (Not sure if this counts :\) for Wii. So meh, I missed out a lot there :(I own a Xbox 360 and Wii but I would like to know what a PS3's like...

I missed out on like all of the DK games (Ones I own are Diddy Kong Racing (N64), Donkey Kong (Nes) and Donkey Kong Country for GameBoy but I cant remember if its one or two :S.

Also, I only own 1 Kirby game and its a remake :(

I own all the Metroid Prime games which isn't bad, though I'd like to play the older ones...

I have all the Kid Icarus games :D (Even though there is only one XD)

If we're talking about the original Game Boy/Color then you have the first Donkey Kong Country. Port of the SNES version. It was ported again on the GBA along with the sequels. But the sequels weren't on the original Game Boy/Color. Unless you're mixing up Donkey Kong Country with Donkey Kong Land.

There were two Kid Icarus games :p

Superjub February 7th, 2009 5:39 AM

I honestly dont know what Donkey kong game it is XD
Yeah, it is probably Donkey kong Land, not country.
And I'm fairly sure its GB, not GBC :\
I think i've lost it now though :(

Well, looking back on it, I wish my father hadn't sold my old systems (SNES, N64, Mega Drive, Dreamcast) on eBay. Been thinking of reacquiring each one, since there are quite a few games I miss playing, plus others I wish I could've played.

Amaruuk February 7th, 2009 7:34 AM

Despite being plenty old enough to have played a fair few classics, I missed out on every console that came out before N64, and was only allowed Game Boys and their kin because my parents for some reason thought having consoles was bad but handhelds were a-ok. Mom even played Tetris a lot.

It wasn't until N64 had been out for quite a while that my aunt convinced my dad to let her give us one. I remember wanting to get Pokemon Snap stickers made, but the machines in Blockbuster stores were long gone by the time we could play. Of course, after the N64, my parents softened gradually, so more consoles were bought, but I still missed my chance to play the old school stuff when I should have.

So, I'm a 20-year-old gamer who never had a NES, SNES, Genesis, PS1, or anything else like that. You can see how this makes it hard for me to fit in with other gamers my age, on top of just being shy.

EDIT: Also, I just feel like I was excluded from a part of history that I should have been involved in.

matt561 February 7th, 2009 9:17 AM

I missed out on all of the halo range and gears of war also i only got into the hitman and resident evil thing very late in the series so i missed some awsome gaming there

Aether February 7th, 2009 11:24 AM

I really did miss out on a lot. My two first consoles were the Playstation and the Game boy Color, my relatives had all the older systems so I didn't really truly experience games like Super Mario Bros. 1-3 or Zelda. I didn't even know Metroid existed until Prime came out. *shoots self*

I remember loving to play Sonic 2 and Sonic Adventure when I visited my cousins' though.

Vanilla Kitsune February 7th, 2009 11:29 AM

As horrible as this sounds, I never got Ocarina of Time or Majora's Mask for my N64. I was never too much into Zelda when I was younger (GASP) so I never got a chance to play it. I have both for Gamecube now, but it's just on my irks knowing I never played the original.

Other than those, thats really it. I don't think I got the Zelda GB/GBA games when they came out, but I have them now.
